CBR posted a new interview/article with Daniel wayand it has a lot of really great information....

http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=6837

Go check it out!!

The best part of the article is Way's confirmation that we'll see what happened to Danny boy at some point in this series. Yee freakin' haw!

Well, it's a shame he's not going to use the Penance Stare. I was always very fond of that. It was such a wonderfully poetic power. However, everything else sounds incredibly exciting. Especially him delivering baddies kicking and screaming to the gates of Hell!! Mw-ha-ha. :ghost:

And thank God Tex is back on the job. Just look at that pic. Bang on! Best GR artist ever, period.

Can't wait.

i wonder if Tex and Javier just swapped jobs as compared to the 90s series. Tex might be doing the actual line art this time and Javier the inking.
guess we should hear more in the coming months...
im still hoping Saltares does some of the actual art somewhere during the series...ive always preferred his artwork for Ghost Rider.

regardless that was a very cool article...shame about the Penance Stare though :(
other than that it sounds very promising

I will also miss the Penance Stare, but if the character is handled right there are a lot of chances to make up for this loss, I'd say.

I don't know what to think about the whole pennance stare thing yet. I was a big fan of that power... however, there is something interesting about him just beating you to the point of pain that you inflicted on others... unless they're bringing back the hellfire blasts...

03-18-2006, 07:07 PM
It sounds like their sort of doing what the movie is--use the chain and the look of Ketch's rider, but with Johnny Blaze and his story. I would expect, for that reason, that the hellfire blasts will be returning. Personally, I'd like to see him return to the Marvel Spotlight Ghost Rider where, rather than blasting hellfire, he could make it appear from anywhere and manipulate it however he wanted. That would be a nice touch for the "penance with no penance stare" angle.

It will be interesting to see how the bike transforms, I always liked that he created the bike out of hellfire, perhaps they will use the hellfire effects metal idea from the movie.

FlameHead
04-06-2006, 02:12 PM
I never liked that hellfire created bike. I do like hellfire blasts on a regular bike changing it into a hellcycle though.

As for Blaze having hellfire blasts again... I say yeah, he will... but from his mouth like the recent mini. That is a HELL of a lot better to me than from his hands.

I've never liked blasts from hands...

I won't miss the penance stare, since (except in some alternate universes in Exiles) the Blaze GR didn't have the penace stare.

FlameHead

True, but they are using a mix of both Ghost Riders in the movie.

Do we really want the movies to determine the direction of the comics?

The movie universe is its own universe - I hope it doesn't start determining the direction of the comics.

FlameHead
04-16-2006, 08:53 AM
Right Right. He was refering to the comics. Damn. My mistake there.

You're right though, I really don't want the movies to push the comics but, I would like to see them work together creating the best possible GR. Plus, there is no way they can ignore each other.

The penance stare is only as good as the after effect. I think the stare is a phenomonal trait, but after the stare there needs to be a good terror shot of the victim. Thats always been missing. I think you need a couple of adders to establish how terrifying the stare is. A- you need to hear the scream, B- you need to see the tremble, C- you need to see a combination flashback of the reversing inflicted terror, D- you need to see after effects. Without any of this, the stare is just assumed.

Fire from the mouth? I don't buy it. Its like burping after a hot burrito. I think the fire has to be from the hands, or like the stare, from the eyes. Hell I think the chain from the mouth was ridiculous in the mini.

IMHO like the bike that has its own personality, I think the chain he wears should also have that trait. Like Doc Oc's tentacle arms in the spidey movie, or in the comics Spawns cape.

Just my 02. cents

Flamehead, there is the answer to the question you posed during our last discussion.

However it poses a new question. Marvels character profile clearly says JB is bonded back to Zarathos, but as we see here it says spirit of vengeance.
Of course JB's GR was originally refered to as being the spirit of vengeance, but I thought they had currently made a distinction.........

Maybe they decided that he will be bonded to Knoble Kale. Perhaps the deal that was made by his and Dan's mother that he will not be a host is no longer valid as he has died and gone to hell, it was clearly Blaze in control in the mini but who's to say what Way has in store for us.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure any reference to any of the Ghost Riders will be Spirit of Vengeance. Zarathos or not.

Personally, I really hope it's not Zarathos and not just because I'm a bigger fan of the latter version. I just think it would be redundant and quite silly to have the same thing happen to Blaze as it did in the past. To me, it's just as well they reprint the first series if they do that.

I just read through the profile in the Marvel Handbook (Marvel Knights edition) that came out last year and it too says that Blaze was somehow bonded back with Zarathos (for the Hammercrap series at least) and one of the last things is says is that Blaze and Zarathos came to terms with each other and bonded in a way they never have. Does this sound silly to anyone else? Why in the hell would Blaze come to terms with a demon he completly hates and has fought on numerous occasions, both within himself and as a different entity. It just doesn't make sense.

I can understand why you say that, kinda like when Burnforever said it shouldn't be noble because it was good but already legend and should be something else. Although, aside from the fact that I think Zarathos was just awesome as GR, I think its cool and makes sense if Mephisto is like: You can't get out of a deal with me, your soul is mine.....PERIOD, and this is the way you'll live 'till I get it.

To me, it's just as well they reprint the first series if they do that.

LOL
But really, I always thought they could've taken Blaze story much further and I'm hoping thats what they do. Besides, If you say that, then that would mean you also think there should be no more Ketch/Noble stuff because then they might as well just reprint his original run.

Yeah, when I first read that it hit me the same way but I think they mean that since in hammer lane Blaze kinda came to appreciate the demon within and was yearning for the old times and the open road they obviously have a different understanding. Though I admit it is a tad rediculous for Blaze to end up feeling that way. Sure, one of us could easily appreciate that :D
but it is hard to believe the Blaze we know ever could. However I think that is what they mean. I guess, just like with everybody else, as you get older your views and whatnot can change.

I can totally understand your thinking behind this and I have to agree with it. Mephisto has Blaze by the balls and can pretty much do what he wants... and we all know how Meph likes to play.

I agree that Blaze could indeed have Zarathos again because, let's face it, Meph has him by the balls too and has for millions of years.

But really, I always thought they could've taken Blaze story much further and I'm hoping thats what they do. Besides, If you say that, then that would mean you also think there should be no more Ketch/Noble stuff because then they might as well just reprint his original run.

The thing is, it's not Noble that I necessarily want, or Dan for that matter (Albeit, I'd love to know what happened to the frigger). It's the history that was developed. I want the Ghost Rider entity to be part of that legacy. I want him to be that noble knight of vengeance not the evil spirit of causing human suffering.

What I'd truly love to see is, if Blaze has Zarathos, to have Dan (or some other host) still have the Spirit of Vengeance. This way, Blaze's story could truly be a Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde story and we'd still have the honerable Ghost Rider. Wouldn't that be an incredible story? Dan, Blaze, Brothers working together to defeat a spirit withing Blaze. Zarathos, Ghost Rider fighting to the bitter end, neither one of them really ever winning.[/QUOTE]

I can see your line of thinking there and with Way saying he will touch on Dan at some point, they may have something like that in mind. It is an interesting idea for a storyline, I'll admit. However, for me, my inherant opposition to there being more than 1 GR prevents me from endorsing that and if there were a choosing of the "best" GR, obviously I would go for Zarathos. This brings to mind U Orb's story of a confrontation. If they do go with something like your idea, I'd like to see U Orb's in there as well, with the same outcome :D

GHOST RIDER # 2 (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=4815)
The Story: “VICIOUS CYCLE”
Johnny Blaze has escaped from Hell--but unfortunately, he wasn’t alone: Lucifer has once again played Johnny for a fool and used him to hitch a ride onto the mortal plane. The Ghost Rider must now track down Lucifer and send him back to where he came from before the Devil succeeds in creating a new Hell...here on earth. This is no small task, but it is further complicated by both the fact that Lucifer hides behind many faces and that there are those—one very strange man, in particular—who would prefer Ghost Rider cease his mission immediately...or else. Part 2 (of 6).

Well, I really like the 1st issue. It looks great (salt. & tex  ) and I really like Way's writing style, I've got a good feeling about this. Of course I liked the 1st issue of Innis and it went downhill from there, but I think this will be different (hope so anyway). Personnally I'm not having a problem with Blaze personality being GR right now, its early still, and this is how Blaze GR originally started anyway and there were a lot of good issues in that time period before zarathos asserted himself. Of course Zarathos stories were better but Blaze had some good ones too.
Damn it feels good to hold a new ongoing GR comic in my hand :ghost:
This will definately help bide the time until the movie comes out, speaking of which, I can't wait to see what they do for the GR movie adaptation comic. Has anybody heard anything about that yet?

Great read!

Even though I'm subscribing to the GR comics, I still went ahead and bought this issue from the store.

Artwork = A
Story Development = A
Ghost Rider's Return = HELL YEAH

I give it 5 out of 5 skulls.

:ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

So far so good.

Only Question:

In the bubble it appears that Johnny is talking, but in the box where he is talking to himself in his mind, is that Zarathos or Johnny?

Ghost Rider: The Daniel Way T&A...I mean, Q&A
2006-07-14 16:50:32

With GHOST RIDER #1 in stores now, we sat down with writer Daniel Way for a quick chat. After that, we subjected Dan to our rapid-fire round of questions -- a specially calibrated Q&A that offers a glimpse into his very soul.

1) When did you start reading Ghost Rider? Any favorite stories?

'92 or '93...when I was a senior in high school.

2) Favorite stories?

The ones that Tex and Jarv did. I remember liking the Scarecrow issue, particularly.

2) You’ve been to some conventions recently and met a lot of fans. What were your impressions of Ghost Rider fans?

They're kinda like me, but fatter.

3) You’re writing both Ghost Rider and Wolverine right now, the two biggest badasses out there (besides you, of course). So….who’d win in a fight?

Marvel.

4) And who’d win in a fight between you and Axel? Don’t lie.

Me. Axel's got the reach on me, but I have the experience. My only concern would be that he'd exploit the opportunity to touch me in an inappropriate and wholly unacceptable fashion.

5) Why do you have to be such a badass, Daniel? No. Really.

Because it's easier than being nice to everyone.

6) Dr. Strange is making a big guest appearance in the first arc. Does the good doctor have any chance against Ghosty?

I'd give him better odds than most anyone else...but at the end of the day? Hell, no.

7) Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? What’s your favorite make and model?

Since I was 7. Favorite street bikes are the old BSA models (for sentimental reasons). As far as dirt bikes go...well, I haven't ridden one since I was about 15 but I really liked the old Husky (Husqvarna) bikes because they were damn near indestructible and because the sprockets had longer teeth and a larger diameter than most other bikes, so they tended to pull harder.

8) What job would you want if you weren’t a comic book writer? And, no, we’re not trying to tell you anything.

Wind farmer/arms stock-piler/cult leader.

Cults are cool. Okay...so now for our rapid-fire round. 1, 2, 3...

1. Hulk or Thor?

Hulk.

2. Shang Chi or Iron Fist?

Shang Chi.

3. When are cowboy hats acceptable?

When you're a cowboy.

4. ...and Capris?

Seriously--what's a capris?

5. You pick -- Dogs or cats?

Dogs. I own a boxer.

6. Cowboys or Niners?

Neither.

7. Earth, Wind & Fire or Blood, Sweat & Tears?

Earth, Wind & Fire. Because I, too, just wanna celebrate.

8. P. Diddy...Puffy Daddy...Diddy...or Puffy?

Who %^$%#$% cares?

9. David Hasselhoff or John Tesh? And no saying, neither. Commit!

Get me outta here, KITT...

10. Billiards - a sport?

You mean "pool", right? No. If you can do it while drinking and smoking, it's not a sport.

11. Favorite cheese?

Stilton.

12. Best Song Ever?

“White Man in Hammersmith Palais.” The Clash.

13. Ronnie Van Zant or Stevie Ray Vaughan?

Ronnie Van Zant.

14. And you. Daniel Way. The Man. Totally macho, or too many nachos?

I write COMIC BOOKS for a living--what do YOU think?

Man, that was one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. The last line is hilarious.

Great find NDX.
