How dark is it,compared to the movies/TV show?

Elijya

VERY dark. or at least, more bloody. Also alot of sci-fi elements left out of the other adaptations

there were 5 oversized trades collecting the original issues. I read em as a kid, they were FANtastic. Ebay's the only place to get em now, lemme see if I can find em for you

The Question

Yeah. I read this one issue (may have been post Mirage) where the turtles were lured to this hidden city where forgoten legends lived. There, they fought a bunch of mythical creatures. The fight scenes were ****ing bloody, my freind.

I always loved the cartoon and the movies when I was a little kid, and I had the odd comic or two that i picked up just cause it had TNMT on the cover... but as i grew older, and become obsessed with Marvel and DC and all that, I discovered that the turtles originated as dark heroes. I remember not understanding the comics i got as a kid because they were so much more indepth, but now I'm totally obsessed with comics I want to read the old issues and see what they are like.

Couple of things:

Which series are the best?

I particularly remember the future shark issues and future don and raph... are there tpbs with these characters out?

Suggestions?

If you can find it, I suggest the TMNT "phonebook". It has a B&W cover and collects issues 1-11 and the microseries for each Turtle.

Later this year trades for TMNT will be coming out of vol1 of the series every four months there will be a new trade. Hope that helps. Oh I cant wait for the city at war trade!!

I cant remember if they ate pizza in the comic?

Elijya
03-13-2006, 12:59 PM
I don't remember seeing any

most people know the cartoon, which was SUBSTANTIALLY different in tone from the original comics. Given how many things that were changed or added to make it kid friendly, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if the pizza obsession was one of them

i think they ate pizza sometimes but in just about the same amounts as normal people and not 3 times per comic.

TheCorpulent1
03-13-2006, 01:24 PM
Yeah, it wasn't as big a deal as the old cartoon made it. Michelangelo was really the only one obsessed with comic books and pizza and TV and all that stuff.

It looks good, im going to have to start getting & reading these tmnt graphic novels. i didn't know the franchise really starting in the mirage series, & the old kiddie toon was a markting plot.

For anyone interested in new TMNT comics that are still good, Newsarama just put up an article about an upcoming mini-series that spins out of the events of Tales of the TMNT #5 by none other than Jim Lawson, the guy who's probably drawn the TMNT more than anyone other than Eastman and Laird themselves:

http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=63032

I didn't know about Tales of the TMNT until it had already been out for a while, so I didn't want to pick it up in the middle, but I'll definitely be getting this mini-series.

All of the Tales stand alone so that shouldn't affect you picking them up. The issues mostly deal with stories from the turtles past and don't clearly fit into continuity. As far as Jim Lawson, his art sucks imo. The only good turtles stories are from the first run after that it goes to pot.

Where'd you hear that? *please don't let it be a rumor! Let it be real!*

I bought collected books 2-5 and all the City at War issues that the official site had for sale, but that was 4 weeks ago and they haven't arrived yet.

Has anyone else ordered from the official site? How long did it take for you to get your order?

So... ordering from the official site is not a good idea? I was considering ordering all of the original Mirage stuff in one fell swoop.

According to the official site it would take 3-6 weeks for your order to come, so I'm probably just being paranoid about it.

However, when I asked someone who had bought from the site how long it took for them, they said they got it in about a week and a half.

Maybe they live closer to Northampton?

Anyway, that's great about the graphic novels. I hope they do the entire series (as in all 63 issues of vol 1, and all of Tales vol 1) cause that would rock!

I got my comics in the mail yesterday, I just thought I'd announce it here to reassure those who were concerned or nervous about buying from the official site.

They were in good condition, I was very pleased!

So, um, are they re-releasing the original stuff in new trades or what. Because I have been looking for the Collected Book vol 1 for like, ever, and nobody on ebay/amazon never has it. I would rather like an actual new copy of the original tale

I don't know if these are the actual collected editions of the comics, since they seem really, really cheap, but Mirage has... something up for sale on their TMNT website:

I've got a 4th printing of the original #1, a second printing of #2, and original copies of 3 up, as well as an original Raphael One Shot, which along with issue #3, are bigger than comic book size because the original prints of the first 3 issues were printed by a company that had never printed comics before. :D

And it was good stuff storywise... unlike the sugar coated crap that the TMNT became for the younger kids...

Yeah, it blows. My library's got a copy of the first volume, which I read and loved, but I haven't heard of anywhere else having it. Maybe I'll steal it whenever I move.

I have a ton of TMNT comics, but only the first 15 or so are really good. Then it was pretty bad until the City at War series. For awhile the books got as campy as the cartoon. But any Turtle fan should get at least the first 15 issues and the one issue micro series'

Return to New York was great too, IMO.

I'm only interested in Volume 1 issues (I have collected books 2-5, Return to New York, and City at War parts 3-13)...so I still need to get collected book 1 and City at War parts 1 and 2.

I think Volume 1 was an appropriate place to end the comic, it seemed to wrap things up nicely in the last issue.

Volume 2 and onward don't sound that good. It should have ended with Volume 1.

Volume 2,3, & 4 are decent for hardcore TMNT fans. Caertainly less campy than the middle of volume one.
