Here's the gist, post about your favorite alrternative manga or anime.

No Big houses here. No Dragonball, no Bleach, no Naruto. Anything that was 24 episodes up to late 40s or early 50s. Not your big mainstream anime manga


and let's keep it up notch. I want quality here, pure anime that is made to blow you away. Not something like "Tsubasa Chronicles" or some other crap like that.

and please, type properly..




I've been trying to watch some anime.

Wolf's Rain. I want to see how cool it is. My friends often tell me it rocks if I like something Ghost in the Shell like or maybe .hack stuff. Since I have no cable and no Direct Tv I cannot watch Animax Channel (24 hour anime channel. Although they don't have lots of anime, they show some anime some seasons and after a few months they change the schedule).


Another one that I've been curious about is "Record of Lodoss War", becauce I suck and I have not watched


Any good anime you want to share with us?

Lodoss War was great in the original version. I didn't really get into the second season that much. The Legend of Crystania OAVs were pretty good also.

Off the beaten path, Chrono Crusade is pretty damn good, it's about Battle Nuns, one of whom has a Demon for a partner. Very interesting series and nice action scenes.

And if you're ever looking for something humorous, I'd suggest Rune Soldier, also called Louie the Rune Soldier. Kinda a spiritual successor to Slayers:)

It's an experience of which you must part-take. Then watch End of Evangelion. It'll mind-**** you retarded. Ok, maybe there's a hint of exagerration there, but it's a good train to be on, really.

yeah... I loved Neon Genesis.

I also loved the Streetfighter V animated series too. That rocks. Got it on DVD recently

key the Metal Idol isn't bad either, it's just that I saw back in the mid 90's so i was way more impressionable.:)

Angel's Egg is another good one. There's practically no dialogue throughout the entire film. There's this fantastic sequence of these statues that come to life, that start chucking fishing spears at silhouette shadows of giant fish that start swimming through narrow corridors of buiildings.

I don't know if Grave of Fireflies could be considered alternative. It's well known, popular and done by large production company.

To be fair, that's why I didn't suggest Evangelion. It's pretty much the DEFINITION of mainstream anime here;)

Yes, but I think Lain's particular narrative style is alternative enough to fit this thread. It's up to Corinthian though.

It is quite a depressing thing, Evangelion... it makes me feel bad about the world and makes me go depressed:(

DN Angel is... interesting. I've only seen 4 eps of it (in anime club), so I'm not sure if the origin and meaning of Dark's existance go beyond what I've seen... but it was very interesting to watch. I kind of liked it.

After you pass 24,skip directly to End of Evangelion.Then,after that,watch 25 and 26.Much better that way.

just finished the movie...

The movie had some cool action scenes but it really tended to take your mind and bend it over the table.

Oh dear goodness. I watched End of Eva one time. I have no brain left. Eva fried it. No wonder Fooly Cooly was so messed up. I'm not sayin that either are bad, I actually like them, but be prepared to lose what little sanity you may have left.

I like a show called Galaxy Angel. Ya, sounds like shoujo duzn't it, straight up shonen comedy. I don't know how far the series got since I only have the first disc, but I swear it's worth the time.

Oh and VanDread the Second Stage. Very nice.

Mindgame is nowhere near as caustic as EoE was. It's more of a brain handjob. The movie is quite life affirming, even though it's so god damn weird. It's more akin to FLCL than EoE.

The mental institution is probably just a rumor, as there don't seem to be any verifiable, reliable sources of info for it. The rumors floating around usually consist of him going through a mental breakdown during or right after Evangelion, and being institutionalized for a year. Chronologically that doesn't make sense since EoE was released in 1997, then worked and released his live action film Love & Pop and His & Her Circumstances in 1998.He did struggle with depression for a number of years (4, i think), but that is on record as happening before Evangelion, right after working on Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (which finished in 1991. Evengelion started in 1995).

OVERMAN KING GAINER!


It's such a great series, but hard for me to buy, because it isn't popular, so it's like 30 bucks a disc.

Genshiken. If you're an Otaku, you need to have this series. It's hilarious, and I see aspects of myself and friends through out this series.

Girls Bravo. Dirty yet hilarious

Beck: Possibly the greatest music-based animes ever made. The soundtrack is amazing, and once you start listening to it, you just can't stop.

Samurai Deeper Kyo: Just wow!

Peacemaker: If you're into Japanese HIstroy, this is a great series to own.


Manga-wise:

Tramps like Us. Momo is the awesome.

Hot Gimmick: It's like passions... with an all teenage cast, and no witches.

DragonHead: Crazy! Train crashes randomly underground, everyone dead except 3 people, and they're trapped underground with 100's of dead bodies...

Yet no one says anything about the mentioning of a well known series called Evangelion?

If you don't know what Eva is, you're not an anime fan.

It, in my opinion, is the most over rated anime ever put out.

That's because even though it's extremely well known, it's pretty damn alternative in structure and narrative. It's also more than ten years old at this point, no longer at the height of popularity.

Yes,true,it is one of the most well-known animes out there,but I don't believe that popularity is a feature that would necessarily make it mainstream.Eva does not follow your basic canon structure.
