Probably so. I think I'll feel better after next week's confirmation of a 6th season. All the reassurances don't really pacify me since I realize things can change on a dime. We're good, Chell. Don't sweat it. If there's ONE show that's in like flint, it's SV.
Its gonna be a long summer after this :(I've got a HUMONGOUS project keeping me busy for the better part of the summer, so I'm kind of looking forward to a "break" from all other things Super. Well, at least till the S5 DVD comes out. It's looking like late August for that, too.

The fifth-season Smallville finale starts off with a bang (and possibly a little foreshadowing?) and doesn't let up. Lex is abducted by the black spaceship in front of Lana, who immediately turns to Clark for help. Clark in turn, goes to Lionel, but finds him in a catatonic state. Meanwhile, Lex returns from his abduction a different man, and the change frightens — and intrigues — him. Clark begins to perceive the plan that the Kryptonian creation called Milton Fine has set in motion, setting the stage for a titanic battle between good and evil, with the very future of Earth itself at stake. -- Rick Toy

Nice article/interview with Glover over at MediaBlvd. Interesting bit about the re-write too. Hmm....
Excerpt:
As things heat up in the season finale of The WB’s Smallville, actor John Glover, who plays Lionel Luther, tells MediaBlvd. Magazine that chaos will reign. In a rather unusual move, the day before they were to shoot the episode, the entire script was thrown out and rewritten.
“It was so exciting. Usually, we’re more organized than that. I think it added to the sense of the frenzy and chaos with everybody in Smallville. James Marsters has a lot to do with the chaos. Lionel is still trying to get into Martha Kent’s pants, or get closer to Martha. Martha is interested, but incredibly wary. Clark is realizing that Lionel knows some stuff that, maybe, could be dangerous. Lex is being a total ***hole to Lionel, but Lionel is still trying to be a good father, in spite of Lex’s stubbornness. Everything is falling apart because the world goes into chaos.”

They changed the script the day before, that's amazing. I hope they talk about that in the upcoming year book.Only thing I can think of is the whole dual script/ending approach. This year was different because of the network merger, so they had to take a chance that the show would get a renewal order, and probably waited till the last possible moment to make the decision. Basically, had the show taken a serious dive with the ratings this year, making its chances of renewal slim to none, tonight's episode would have been the last. Forever. They would have wrapped everything up in a nice big blue, red, and yellow bow tonight. ;)

But remember, the actors aren't always in the loop with the scripts. I'd venture a guess the only one who has any inkling of what's going on beyond three or four episodes into the future (despite what he says in interviews LOL) is Welling. This is something I dont get. Why would Jor-El or Kal-El have any type of authorative power to be able to free criminals from the Phantom Zone? I thought Jor-El was just a scientist? Wouldnt the power to do that fall under the Kryptonian police?

jor-el discovered the phantom zone. moreover, in the movie, jor-el casts the deciding vote banishing zod, ursa, and non to it. conceivably, he has access.

40s is pretty damn old, but its about the age I always imagined Lex at during the Superman years. He was always that age in the comics until Birthright facked up continuity a bit, but luckily it was fixed.
That was the plan but the rocket ship wasnt big enough for them only for a baby.
Not the ship...escaping into Phantom Zone I meant. You dont need a ship to enter the PZ.
5 minutes. Hoping for the best. Hoping nothing comes out of the 'Chark' moment. Hoping Zod shows his face like Rosenbaum implied. Hoping Lex's memory doesnt get reversed after the whole 'Lexod' incident...

This is definitely my new favorite episode. Definitely movie caliber. Amazing. Rosenbaum was right, this episode was awesome. What it lacked in special effects wise- if you count the storm and the metereorites.... it definitely made up for it story wise. This episode was VERY tense from beginning to end.
I don't know if the plane set anything up, but it might... depending on how long Clark is in the Phantom Zone. The only way to get Martha and Lois off the plane- since it didn't go down yet, and will eventually go down (that is if ALL Fines were destroyed (which I think they are)).... flight, anyone? Just a wild guess. But, perhaps? I don't see any other way to save the day in that scenario. Hopefully I'm right- might not be.
The season premiere is also going to kick ass. Can't wait to see how Superman saves the day.
And to the poster questioning why technological failure would bring about a scare- remember the Millenium "bug"?

I didn't like the ending.
I thought it was gonan end on a note for Superman Returns. But it didn't.
I would've liked it if Jor-el freed Clark and gave him the one thing to go to battle: a battle armor suit with the S-symbol on it (think the one from LIVES). Then he flies to Metropolis, sees Lex/Zod and asks "Who are YOU?" and Clark says "I'm Superman".
We have to wait til the next season. I know people will say "we have SR" but for something like this, its one of the things I'm sick of. I'm sick of Lana, sick of CLark fighting the enemies Superman should fight, and sick of cliffhanger endings. What if the show doesn't get renewed? Then that opens a can of worms for all of us. At least Bruce Timm ended each JL/JLU season in case it was the last.
Great ideas, mind you. Just wanted more for the episode before the enxt season in....months.

I agree with Marve Movies in which it will only be a couple of minutes. Eternity (or just a long time) in Phantom Zone= couple of minutes Earth time. Perhaps? I don't know much of the technicalities about the Phantom Zone.
Yes, Fine was the pilot of the plane. BUT, depending- the Fine that was stabbed with the dagger could have been (and probably is) the real Fine, which in turn would probably destroy all of the Fines since they all come off of the same "main hard drive." Thus, main Fine dies= seperate Fines destroyed in process.
As for the plane, hopefully this route is taken- CK would have the power of flight! I mean, a plane in danger and there's no other possible way to stop it. If this is also part of "the plan"- then, I'd say... awesome.

Think about it the movie is coming out, so I truly believe that Warner Bro's will be more relaxed on the suit being seen on tv because it won't spoil there cash cow. If Welling was seen in the suit before the movie it would potentially wreck havoc on Routh, but with that release out of the way, Welling will don the suit!!!
Anyway, yes, Clark will return as Superman, save the world, and at some point date Chloe!!!!!
Lana will become likeable again, but live out her doomed future as a single mother stuck in Smallville here whole life, because yes, Lois is the future!!!! Sad, but true!!!

HELL NO Lois should be next
LOL haha best finale ever! (*evil laugh*)
I give "Vessel" a 4.5 out of 5
- Great director (beginning recap, cinematography)
- Good acting (all around, especially Rosenbaum and Kreuk)
- Good dialogue
- Bad story elements (this is where it loses the 0.5). So there wont be a Zod actor. Zod's body is destroyed by his spirit was imprisoned in the zone? Spirit? Are you kidding me? How lame is that... They need to leave all this supernatural stuff to "Supernatural," it doesnt belong here. Magic, in itself, is a Kryptonian weakness. This all leads me to believe that the Jor-El in the fortress is a ghost/spirit too and not a program (like in STM).
My Personal Reasons for Enjoying this Episode (evil laugh)
- Seeing Lana completly destroy whatever was left of 'Clana' and make it clear she harbors more negative feelings towards Clark than anything. That was a serious burn towards the Clana fans :)
- Seeing Lana making out with Lexod in the cliffhanger and accepting Lex, knowing he has superpowers...also a serious burn to Clana fans :)
- Seeing Clark make out with Chloe (while it made me totally sick), Clark seemed to reciprocate the kiss. Another burn to 'Clana' but Ksite should be annoying the crap out of this fandom all summer, something amusing to me :)
- Seeing Clark get totally owned by Lexod and thrown into the Phantom Zone for the whole summer. That was just priceless. Im a major fan of Lex and this was certainly an episode where he owned everyone. Rosenbaum wasnt exaggerating. So I guess fans are gonna have to wait 4 months to see Clark break out of the PZ card somehow.
I found that whole ending with Clark yelling in the card and is flew off into space pretty lame... but I guess they wanted to mimic how it was done in the premiere.
The riots and stuff (especially the stock footage) just made me laugh. This seemed more like a horror film when watching it. It was very enjoyable though, mainly because of the way everything turned out.
There was no flight in this episode either but even if there was, it wouldnt have made a difference. Ive seen flight on this show already, it isnt uncharted territory.
I think this episode was enough to prolly make me a Smallville fan. I mean the show is still serious Elseworlds...now more than ever, but I can enjoy it for episodes like this. It was entertaining for all the wrong reasons, but sometimes you just have to cheer for the villians. It Smallville's case, the villian(s) are definately far more interesting and cool than teenage Clark, so its all good.
I was expecting a lame kneel before Lexod line but thankfully we didnt get it. However, in the context of the episode....this poster with Lana kneeling at Lex/Zod's feet and Lex in the forefront makes perfect sense.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/PrimoPiccolo/vesselposter.jpg
This was definately a big budget episode and had some great CGI shots going for it. My favorite was the end where it pans over Metropolis from Lana and Lexod making out...into space.
So again, "Vessel" gets a 4.5 out of 5. All I can say is this is gonna be an interesting summer :D

Lionel / Jor-el doing something would be the way that I would chose to free Clark. Lionel knows all the secrets.. though I dont' see Jor-el helping Clark out again, since Clark just disobeyed him ... AGAIN.. by stabbing Fine instead of Lex.
Whats funny is Clark's decision not to kill. Fine is a sentient lifeform...and Clark has already killed him before. Yet under all these heavy circumstances, and prolly other people being killed and raped on the streets, Clark decided to kill Fine again!?

Anyhoo... great episode tonight! Wonderful way to cap off the season, and the cliffhanger(s) will definitely keep fans jawing through the summer.
I didn't see Clark reciprocate that kiss. Looked more like Chloe just dove in and Clark did what he usually does when Chloe jumps him: he deals.
Stock footage was... meh. Funny they chose NY and LA as the only two cities other than Metropolis. Why not London, or Paris, or Moscow, or Beirut.... Well, maybe not Beirut (nothing unusual about carnage there LOL). Better yet, why not use cities from the mythos? Edge City, or... dare I suggest, "Gotham?" Heh. Nah. Guess they'd get their wrists slapped if they did that.
Interesting twist on Zod. But I'm a bit confused... Why reduce him to some sort of spirit entity when the PZ is a pretty permanent prison as it is? Odd.
I'm curious to see how they reverse Lex in S6 (powers and Zod possession.) Zod said Lex was dead. And if Clark gets Zod out of Lex (a reasonable assumption), will Lex forget the whole experience? (Probably LOL) Will Lana forget everything that happened? (I hope not.)
Gosh, and speaking of Lana.... ARGH. Actually, lets not speak of Lana. :p
And finally, Martha and Lois on a plane. LOL Oh c'mon. Does anybody *really* wonder how they'll be saved, who will do it, and how? Think hard peeps. It aint difficult. http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/smug.gif

To me, what is happening is the result of Clark's disobeying of Jor-el.
Jor-el told Clark to kill the vessel (Lex), yet Clark disobeyed him (again) and killed somebody else (Fine).
If Clark would have just listened to Jor-el and killed Lex, I think this could have been prevented... then again, I guess we'll never know.
IF he would have killed Lex, Zod would have been transported into Clark I think.

Clark said in Oracle that Fine has died twice.
Heres the thing though, if Clark realized the ship was the brains of the Fine clones and they were merely extensions of the ship. What was the point of throwing the dagger into the Fine clone? Destroying the Fine extension would solve nothing if the ship was spawning them and controlling them...
Either way, it made no real sense.

That's what's funny, from the beginning all the problems started because Clark misunderstood Jor-El messages. Jor-El has basically been telling Clark that he needs to protect the planet, but Clark has always ran away trying to be normally, and everytime some worse happens

This was the lamest season finale yet. Lex as Zod?!?! That totally destroys what's interesting about Lex, he doesn't have powers. Special effects were subpar, lame ass stock footage (at least use something like Gotham and Keystone City besides LA and NY). I was so much more interested to find out what would happen next in all the other season finales.

Well in Byrne's origin at some point Clark saves a plane from crashing and when he puts it down he is mobbed by a crowd of ppl who all want a piece of him, thus leading him to think about a secret identity.
This is a great opportunity if I ever seen one...

You know what pissed me off about the Lana scene. Even though shes angry and claims not to his many sides or whatever. She knows Clark A)Wouldnt hurt anyone or B)Wouldnt hurt anyone without a very good reason.
I think the point of her last conversation with him was to show that she doesn't feel like she really knows him at all.. and probably never did. And truly.. she's right, she never did really know who Clark Kent really was, only the part he could share with her.
I *really* thought he was going to tell her *something* in that scene, when she asked him directly that if he ever cared for her, to tell her what's going on with Lex. Gah! The frustration at him not telling her AGAIN! He could have at least told her something about the Lex situation, without having to do the whole reveal about himself. Especially when he heard her say that she would never abandon Lex because he was different.
So.. I'm actually the most scared for Chloe. Damn. Talk about a girl in peril. Yikes.
Lois and Martha will be fine.. I'm sure someone special will save them. ;)
Poor Lana.. I almost have to laugh at the situations they put her in. Now she's going to do Zod? Zod's been in prison for a hell of a long time, I'm not sure he's going to offer to buy dinner first. ;)
Oy.. I swear, that girl will be entering a convent by the time this show ends! LOL...

Negate 5 seasons of development on Smallville. I thought this season finale was cruel enough to some fans.....I dont think they would ever do that.
But I have a strong feeling Lex wont remember any of this in season 6....and Lana still wont know the truth about Clark, despite all this evidence.

Lana was never some goody goody character in the comics until recently. Back in the day, she basically stalked Clark and gave Lois all kinds of trouble with Supes/Clark. The whole "poor girl that gets left behind" angle only came in after Byrne I believe.

I kinda like the cliffhangers in this one, even though it's not my favorite season finale. I know the Clark disappears thing was done before, even though it wasnt the PZ before, but his being gone makes everyone else's life or death situation much more tense.
Martha and Lois on a Plane - I think we all know how that has to end, and the only way to do it is pretty cool.
Lex as Zod - very cool, also remember Lex knew something was up with Clark BEFORE he turned into Zod completely so it may not be forgotten, though it probably will. Also we could see Zod somehow take over another body and get a different actor next season. BTW what happened to the scene with Lex coming out of that sack thing we saw in the previews?
Chloe and Lionel catching a beat down - dont know what will happen with that unless Lionel channels Jor El again and he starts kicking ass. But perhaps theres something going on with that guy in the hood? Dunno.
BTW, who the heck is gonna take care of Shelby? :(

I liked it, I was expecting something more honestly, but you can't do much in 40 minutes. I understand those saying Commencement was better, it was longer, had a 2nd meteor shower, the black ship, and the FOS.

05-11-2006, 10:09 PM
I guess I'm kind of on the fence about it. There was some great stuff in it to be sure. That Lex/Clark confrontation scene was outstanding. I love how they both took the gloves off, but Clark was still the bigger and better man, saying to Lex, "You're not yourself" as opposed to losing his temper. That's the Clark I love to see.
I loved how they had Lionel say.."Mares(?) Field?" then cut to Lex, unconscience and trembling.. just like when he was there as a kid and caught in the meteor shower. I swear.. they even had him laying in the same position as he did in that pilot scene. I'll have to find screen caps of both and see them side-by-side.
I didn't actually hate the Lana stuff either <ducking>. I mean, I do, but I don't. It's not the situation I want them to be in, but I still think it's an interesting alternate scenario to explore. I hate her being so angry with Clark, but I think the writers have made a good case for why she would be.
I wonder if the plan for making Lana more a part of the mythology next season is to have her remain Zod's squeeze?
The Chlark didn't even bother me too much. Gotta say, if I was Chloe, I guess I'd do the same thing. Where it leaves them for next season though.. that could potentially be a big issue for me. Although, unless Chloe is saved reeeally soon, I can see her going the route of post-traumatic stress and snapping. Perhaps her mom will have a new roommate. ;)
I was hoping for a bit *more* from the confrontation with Zod. Clark was rendered essentially powerless against him.. and that was really odd, I thought.
New York, Los Angeles, and Metropolis.. Where t.f. was Chicago. ;) The stock footage of the looters did crack me up.
So, I didn't love it, but I liked parts of it very much. I wonder if Fine will be back or if that was his final curtain? Anyone know the count on Marsters appearances? Didn't he say he was in 10?

Kal, do you have a gif of the final scene with Clark in the PZ trapazoid thingy?
Commencement didnt really have the FOS. I think this was a better effort though.
While Commencement was pretty predictable also, there was alot that was unexpected here...especially Lana kissing Lexod at the end and a lack of a major Clark/Lexod battle....instead Clark gets carded off to the PZ.
Didnt see that stuff coming..
