View Full Version : Spider-Man Balloon Petition - Please Help!

To those who are interested, here's the story. A few months ago, I wrote a petition with the intention of getting the Spider-Man balloon back into the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, or failing that, put in a Marvel Comics-themed float in the parade. After a lull in activity, I have been making some considerable progress. However, I found out recently that DC Comics is in negotiations with Macy's, possibly to get their own spot in the parade. If this happens, there could be some problems in getting the balloon back into the parade. Now, I'm asking you, as a fellow Spider-Man fan, to sign my petition the minute you read this thread, and spread the word along to anyone and everyone you know who would be interested.
Here is the link:

Have any of you ever known an onliene petition to be effective? I remember signing the one to get Sony to put mechanical webshooters in the movie (back when that actually bothered me) & we all know how that turned out.

This, Mr. Wallace, will be different, I can assure you. I certainly do not want to spend another Thanksgiving without the wall-crawler in the parade. In fact, I am going to get in touch with the people at Marvel and Macy's to get my point across. In the meantime, I'm going to keep the petition up for as long as I can until my goal has been reached. In the meantime, let's keep up the support, people!
P.S. Current # of signatures -- 188!

That's crazy! That's nothing. You should have WAY more sigs than that! There are lots of places where people are discussing Spidey... how many have you posted to? I'll bet even boards that are not just comic related would work. You need to spread this around!

for example the city of heroes boards only allow pists regarding the game or its characters

UPDATE: I have just reached the 200 mark on my petition, but I had to void one of the signatures, since I found it to be slightly offensive. Otherwise, keep signing.

i seem to remember the original spidey ballon being damaged in a parade one year is that why it hasn't been around?
It was an extremely windy day, and the guys holding the ropes were having a hard time keeping the balloon in the air, it fell and hurt several people...i think there might even have been a death involved, im not 100% sure...
I remember Joe Quesada mentioning that he was in talks to get the balloon back in the parade about two years ago, but so far, nothing has come of it.

Take my word for it, SouLeSS. This petition will work, and once I have enough signatures under my belt, Macy's will care what the fans think, and they may even realize that there could be some bucks to be made if they comply.:spidey:

What are you talking about? There was an accident?
And even if there was, removing the balloon won't solve anything. That's just dumb. Why do people always react to things in extremes? If some dumb kid listens to a rap record & kills somebody, the answer is to ban rap music. When did it get like this? When did people become so...stupid?

To answer your question, Chris Wallace, I think that people in general have always been at the level of stupidity that you just discussed. To quote Tommy Lee Jones in "Men In Black," "A person is smart, but people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it."
I can't think of a better way to describe it.

Oh, now I see where you're coming from, Chris Wallace. I don't think they would do that, though. More likely, they would do the smart thing and have Spidey in the original suit, because that what most people recognize when they think of Spider-Man, even if they don't read the comic books.

I disagree & I'll tell you why; Spider-Man is a happy-go-lucky, family friendly character (at least on the surface) & his bright colors are a joy to see on Thanksgiving morning. He's a symbol of nostalgia for some, simplistic joy for others, and he is controversy free. As nice as it would be to see some other Marvel charaters alongside him, they don't bear those same qualities. The most likely candidates would be:
Cyclops-who has the name of a monster & what is widely perceived to be a laser deathray coming out of his eyes.
Wolverine-a savage, animalistic killing machine with razor sharp claws.
Hulk-a monster who wants to smash.
Thing-a monster who wants to clobber.
These are cool characters but not everybody would embrace them. And the presence of villains truly suggests violent conflict. I'd be more than happy to just get the Spidey balloon back. I don't wanna get greedy. The whole float idea sounds like overkill.

Those are double-edged swords too.
Cap is the symbol of American Patriotism but he's also a symbol of war.
Iron Man is cool to look at but his suit's a weapon, which he created to save his life from another weapon of war. Plus he's a womanizing alcoholic.
Thor is a viking-nuff said.
CaptainStacy
05-31-2006, 11:31 AM
Would the general public know about Tony Stark's weapon manufacturing. womanizing, or bout with alcoholism?
And Cap, a "symbol of war"? I've never heard THAT before. Most people ive talked to see Cap as a symbol of liberty.
Also; i'd be interested to see just how much of the general public would make the association between Thor and his Norse heritage. Most vikings we see in artwork and history books werent wearing red, blue and yellow clothing...

You raise some interesting points, mon capitan. You should meet my wife.
I could be reading too much into it, yes. But you're thinking of that giddy little fanboy that lives inside of you & I'm thinking about the psychotic collective entity I like to call Mothers of America-the ones who got the damn balloon pulled in the first place. The ones who got the TMNT & Batman movies watered down into mindless crap. The ones who ruin evrything in the entertainment industry b/c they hold it responsible for their children's emotional & mental well being & not themselves. I wanna appease them so they don't start one of their ridiculous campaigns, the likes of which got Hasbro to pull their Pussycat Dolls line (because it makes much more sense to get something taken off the market-or not introduced in the first place-than to just not buy it for your kid.)

sirry if i'm tossing cold water on this but i remember hearing on a macys parade once that it takes a year from comissioning a ballon to having it in the parade

That may be true, 3dman27, but perhaps if we make enough noise, we can speed up the process a little.

I was referring to the fact that more people would sign due to the teaser being out and this year would be bad for me to go up to see the parade, next year looks better :)

Thanks for the help, Batattack. However, I have some sad news. From now on, any signature that comes through will require my approval before reaching the list.

I took the link out of the thread I posted, but somehow they found it through the PetitionOnline main page, and threw in junk signatures. As a result, I voided their signatures, and now I've got a huge hole in my signature list. Now, anyone who wants to sign has to get my approval first before they can be added to the list.
I swear, those guys are gonna pay through the nose when I'm done with them...

I get about quite a bit, it will be ok. It's in my sig. Have you tried imdb, they have message boards but they too come across some sick f k's.
There's a Spider-Man and a Tobey Maguire one, haven't checked for a Sam Raimi one. But he has a following I discovered while hanging about the set.

Chris Wallace

No bets. I just want this petition to be successful. I once thought 500 was asking for a lot & you blew that number away. I cannot overemphasize what you're up against & you need as many bullets in the gun as you can get.
walternewell
07-26-2006, 06:15 PM
Don't worry, I intend to get plenty of bullets in my gun. By the way, if by some luck of the draw I do hit 1,500, do you intend to raise the bar again, or will I have enough under my belt to satisfy the higher-ups? Just curious.
tzarinna

You really should hang out here more walt, try posting the link in your sig like I did and chat with folks in the Spidey fourms, during some hyped up moment would be ideal. ;)

Hmm, I just realized you need 100 posts to get a sig.
Just go to the community, they have some time killing games that can up your post count and then just go to your control panel.
When your done I'll give you the link to put it in like how I had it,so it' not just a link but something fun,huh  :)

I wonder if that petition helped to make that happen?

Have you gone to the imdb boards, you'll have to bump it often and make it a really interesting tag for folks to look at. I would also just jump in to one of threads and post it randomly, they move quick and it can get lost easy. But yeah post it randomly in there,in maybe Tobey's board (which is mega slow) and the Spider-Man board which moves at lighting speed just because there are too many repetive/joke topics. You might get some seriuos intrest and I don't know if Sam Raimi has a board there but I think there is a place to discuss directors.
I alot of people hit imdb.

It doesn't matter where I set the bar-you & your right-hand woman tzarrina are gonna do all you can to make it happen. And I'm glad of that. I want this to succeed. That's why I keep raising the bar. The Spidey balloon has always been the highlight of the parade for me. Get on it.

Hey Walt have you seen this Video of Marvel Parade (http://kungfurodeo.com/2006/10/04/marvel-float-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade-1987/)?
Maybe you could edit your first post to include it,if you want.
When I googled the balloon I came up with this but couldn't locate it once I entered the site.

Yes, tzarinna, I have seen that video, many times in fact. However, a friend of mine from the CorvusChatter boards recently dug up this new rarity, which can be found here:

By the way, in regards to the Wikipedia article that you found, I added the link to my petition there awhile back, in the early days of my attempts to spread the word around ;) Fun fact for ya.
And we are now up to...1025 signatures!!! Let's keep this going!!!
