Its always fun to see other peoples interests, which issue of any batman comic is your favorite.
Mine is actually from the knightsend arc, where bruce and jean paul go at it, and they are cought in an all out war that has catwoman nightwing and robin going up against an entire corporation of thugs. It was pretty action packed

I really liked the April Fool's Day issue of The Long Halloween series because they make all these scenarios of who could be Holiday and why they would have killed certain people.
I can't pick a favorite single issue, too many to choose from.

Guess it depends on how many comics you have read..thus making it harding to decide. Like, I posted one of my favorites from The Long Halloween..not my overall favorite issue.

There are alot of favourites. My all time favourite issue of a Batman comic is Detective #457 (1976) "There Is No Hope In Crime Alley".
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/themanbat/denny87_4_000457.jpg
A story which shows Batman's psyche and motivations. Batman revisits the moment of his greatest agony as he visits his parent's place of death. Realistic and gritty with a flashback of Batman's origin. Batman fights small urban street crime. Not chasing international criminals. When asked why, Batman says "Crime is crime...to you, the loss of one dollar is more important than the loss of thousands to a banker."

Written by Denny O'Neil, art by Dick Giordano thats just like Neal Adams.

No way i'll ever be able to pick a single issue, but here's my current top five (i.e, the issues i go back and re-read on a regular basis);
Batman #260 - "This One'll KILL you, Batman" by Denny O'Neil...One of my favorites since childhood. Mainly because we get to see a demonstration of Batman's many fighting skills during one brutal battle. Two-Face has tipped Bats off that there is about to be an escape attempt from the mental ward (dont think Arkham existed yet, have to dig it out later and check), and Batman gets there just as about two dozen inmates are about to escape. Bats utilizes several different martial arts disciplines while attempting to subdue them....besides all that, this is also a pretty cool Joker story as well. Joker has poisoned Batman, and Bats has 72 hours (iirc) to locate the couple doctors with the ability to save him....Joker, of course, is on his way to murder them first.
Detective Comics #454 - Another great issue featuring The Dark Knight's many fighting skills. Wanted felon, and all around bad apple Rex Giles has decided to take Gotham's Guardian down a peg or two. He hires several different "ultimate fighter" types (each disguised as Giles himself), to pick a public fight with Batman. The point being, to figure out Batman's fighting style and come up with a way to defeat and humiliate Batman in front of a crowd. We also get to witness Batman's
excellent analytical skills, as going over each fight in his mind, he realizes Giles is setting him up for a major beat down. When the two finally meet on the mean streets of Gotham, Batman proves once and for all that the city isnt big enough for both of them!
Detective Comics #455 - "Heart of a Vampire", by Elliot S Maggin...I try to dig this one up each Halloween. Returning from a road trip, Bruce and Alfred's limo breaks down on the outskirts of Gotham...right in front of an old, decrepit mansion...turns out to be the home of Count Gustav DeCobra, vampire lord! Shouldnt be a problem for Batman, right? Simple stake through the heart and call it a night? WRONG! The evil count has had his heart removed to an undisclosed location in the mansion, and Batman better find it quick before he and Alfred end up as a midnight snack. Very creepy issue!
Killing Joke - Alan Moore. Great issue...this was really the first time i remember seeing Joker's past and motivations explored with such great detail...when this book came out, it was the topic of conversation at the comic shops for the next several YEARS. Great debate on whether or not Joker sexually assaulted Babs after crippling her...best part of all though, was seeing Batman offer Joker a chance at redemption....and Joker, for a split second, nearly accepts! To me, this remains one of the best Batman stories, and certainly THE best Joker story, ever.
Batman Annual #19 - Nothing particularly earth shattering here, other than like Killing Joke, we get to see the background of another great villain explored, this time being Scarecrow. I just dig him, what else can i say?

Detective 701: One of my favorite Batman Battles with Bane
The Laughing Fish: My favorite Joker story. He was the perfect balance of crazy and funny.
Batman 232: First appearance of Ras Al Ghul. It was great watching Bats, Ras, and Ubu travel to find Robin and Talia. And it was pure Batman when Bruce knew the whole thing was a ruse from the start.
Batman 599: Bruce in prison with those three aryans, his world slowly coming apart, and him on the brink of going to the dark side of his psyche. When he finally beat up those guys, it was great. Bruce had snapped.
Batman 1: Golden Age goodness. The stories here were pretty damn good for its time, with Bats as a pulp adventure hero. Joker and Catwoman make their first appearances here.
To Kill a Legend: A story that shows, that even without Bruce's parents dying, He would become a hero anyway. Shows Batman determined to make sure this Bruce Wayne dosent go through what he did.
Batman 608: Revived Batman for me. Brubakers run was good, but this brought back the electricity and excitement of a Batman comic. Seeing Cats and Ivy under the art of Jim Lee was great. Lee was back in business, and so was the Dark Knight.

Mine too. This was their first re-match after Knightfall (iirc), and i was actually afraid for Batman right before the fight started...and i cheered out loud when Bats knocked him out.
It's funny how we can get so emotionally attached to fictional characters. (and also a testament to great writing).

Tough pick. Obviously, 'TKJ', 'Year one', 'TDKR', and 'Son of the Demon' get considered. As does 'There is no hope in crime alley', but i'm gonna go with soemthing a bit 'left-of-field' and say:-
I really liked BATMAN SPECIAL #1 “...The Player on the Other Side!” (1984)
by Mike W. Barr and Michael Golden.

Yeah, which is what the batbooks have been missing for a while. those early to mid 90's books, despite all the crossovers, were pretty good.
I think the best batman stories utilize all the great aspects of Batman/Bruce Wayne, his supporting cast, and his classic villains.
