SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL -
In this fastpaced, revelatory book, Superman begins his ascension to iconic hero as he leaves Smallville and becomes Metropolis's revered protector and guardian. Featuring the Man of Steel's legendary first encounters with Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and Batman, this amazing book also includes a deadly battle with Bizarro, a fateful encounter with Lana Lang, and Superman's astonishing discovery of his Kryptonian heritage.
SUPERMAN: FOR ALL SEASONS -
Telling the story of his physical and emotional journey from the plains of Smallville to the concrete canyons of Metropolis; Clark's tenuous first steps toward the realization that even his great power has limits...and that, ultimately, the most powerful man alive is only a man. Leaving Smallville behind, he meets the woman he will one day marry, earns the hatred of his deadliest foe, and learns the lessons that will transform a simple farmboy into the greatest champion of justice the world has ever known.
SUPERMAN: BIRTHRIGHT -
Witness the making of a legend, as Clark Kent learns the tough lessons needed to become the World's Greatest Hero! Also watch as Lex Luthor comes to Smallville, befriending Clark. But it’s a relationship that may ultimately spell disaster for Metropolis and the Man of Steel.
ACTION COMICS #800 -
From his arrival on earth to when he finally donned his famous costume, Superman's life is re-examined, and a new character who inspired him to be a reporter is introduced. Plus, in more reality-based vignettes, we look at the effect Superman has had on everyday people!
Now, I know many will pick Man of Steel. But I would rather all of you know or have read all of these at least for balance. I have read #800, and I thought it was great. If you want to know why, let me know.
Still, before/after you vote, please post what you voted and why.

I know I'm probably in the minority here but I really like Birthright.
For All Seasons is good too. I'm not a big fan of Man of Steel.
The Question

For All Seasons is really a sequel to Birthright. It's not in contradiction of it, and is based off of it.

Man of Steel and Superman For All Seasons are great. I strongly disliked Superman:Birthright.

You mean it's a sequel to Man of Steel, yes?
Anyhow, I liked Birthright, personally.
but if i ranked 'em it'd be:
-Birthright
-Superman for All Seasons
-Action Comics 800
-Man of Steel

The Question

You mean it's a sequel to Man of Steel, yes?
Yes. It's based off of the Man Of Steel version of, well, everything. It's a sequel.

Man of Steel followed by For All Seasons. They perfectly summed up the Superman and his cast of supporting characters that I grew up reading.

I don't have a favorite. I love a lot of the different renditions told over the years in comics and film (the exception being Suckville on the the WB). I like certain aspects of each, so it's a very tough question.

Birthright, if only because I really like Waid's characterization of Clark/Supes.
MoS because it didnt f^ck up 20 years of history like Birthright did. And it had no ties with Smallville the TV series :)

Minus some artistic stuff, neither does Birthright.
I find Birthright to be much better than Man of Steel, as it raises both Kal-El's heritage and human upbringing, not making one better than the other like Man of Steel did.
I think BR would be a good backstory to use if they do a new Superman animated series.

Yes, it did. It completely ****ed with 20 years of post crisis continuity.

The thing is, logically, his human upbringing would be more important to him. He never met Jor-El and Lara. He only barely lived on Krypton. His Kryptonian heritage is nothing but old recordings and a space ship. It's not tangible. I would understand that he would respect where he came from, but it would make more sense to me that Earth, the place where he actually lived and grew up, would be more important to him.

None of the above. I liked the Pre-Crisis origins better.

Exactely. IT only reafirms the statement and irony that Superman is the most human character ever but he`s not even human.

Good to hear. I bought those two and will be reading them after I am done with my Batman stuff.

I love "For All Seasons" to death, but I actually had to vote for Action Comics #800. It's just one of the greatest single issues I've ever read, and the amount of stuff they crammed into it was awesome. It was a great, self-contained, tribute to Superman, so it had to get my vote...just felt like someone should give it a nod.

the only thing that bothered me about "man of steel" was the times he hit girls in it, surely not our supes?!

What do you mean?

I notice now that it was neccessary at the time, but when i was young and i first read it, for example the woman with the dynamite on her chest who he flicks in the face, i always thought that was a very un0super thing to do!
The Question
04-18-2006, 06:07 PM
Well, Supes may be somewhat ld fasioned, but he has enough sense not to hold back against a woman in combat any more than he needs to. If a woman's got a bomb, he knocks her out. If not, she and other people will die. And, while I may be wrong here, I've always felt that death is a good deal worse than getting punched in the face.
