Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117941009?categoryid=13&cs=1) (subscription required) reports that X-Men: The Last Stand will be screened at the 59th Annual Cannes Film Festival:

The 59th annual Cannes Film Festival will have a strong Hollywood presence thanks to Fox's "X-Men: The Last Stand" and Warner Bros.' "The Fountain," both starring Hugh Jackman, plus a 20-minute preview of Paramount's Oliver Stone pic "World Trade Center" and a slew of other U.S. pics, including toons and docs...

...After a fallow last year, DreamWorks returns to the fest with its latest toon, "Over the Hedge," about a raccoon (voiced by Bruce Willis) and a turtle battling encroaching suburbia. Pic is targeted for a noncompeting slot, as is "X-Men: The Last Stand," which opens worldwide during the fest's second week.

The festival runs from May 17th to the 28th.

It helps to build hype by showing the film at a festival where thousands of movie critics are known to be.

I know our head honcho JoBlo himself was debating his return trip to the Cannes Film Festival this year but that was before this latest announcement. Cannes '06 will have a line-up that will be as impressive as any I've seen in recent years including recent additions X3, THE FOUNTAIN, OVER THE HEDGE, BABEL and PAN'S LABYRINTH in addition to the previously announced DA VINCI CODE and MARIE ANTOINETTE. Not to shabby, eh? Sadly, you'll also have to sit through 20-minutes of Oliver Stone's WORLD TRADE CENTER but don't let that ruin your good time. As you might expect, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (God, I hate that title) will be screening out of competition though Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN will play as part of the "official selection." Director Wong Kar Wai (2046) is the Cannes jury president this year, which has a decidedly more mainstream feel. There are still more titles to announce though it seems that films once considered shoe-ins like Steven Soderbergh's THE GOOD GERMAN, FUR with Nicole Kidman and THE BLACK DAHLIA won't be ready in time to premiere at the festival. One film still looking for a slot is CLERKS 2, which The Weinstein Co. is trying to align for director Kevin Smith. All-in-all sounds like a good time in the south of France this May.

V for Vendetta was shown in Berlinale (another prestigious film festival) and got good reviews. Cannes is even more important than Berlinale is, so it's a great exposure for X3.

Oh, and "noncompeting slot" means that the movie is not competing for any prize -the Golden Palm Tree Leaf- but it's just being shown to the critics. :)

Selections lining up for Cannes Film Fest

CANNES, France, April 5 (UPI) -- Hugh Jackman will have a high profile at the 59th annual Cannes Film Festival with "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "The Fountain" both making the cut.

Although the list of films selected for the prestigious festival is not due out until April 20, at least 12 films have already been chosen to compete, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

It was previously announced that Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" will kick off the festival with its world premiere May 17.

Definitely set for the competition is Sofia Coppola's "Maria Antoinette";
"Climates," by Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and French director Nicole Garcia's "Selon Charlie," Variety said.

"X-Men: The Last Stand" will not be part of the competition but will be screened as will DreamWorks' latest animated film, "Over the Hedge," starring Bruce Willis.

Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" will offer a 20-minute preview and the director will be honored during a 20th anniversary tribute to "Platoon," Variety said.

Over at Hollywood’s famous Chateau Marmont hotel, guests are not seeing things. Lindsay Lohan, America’s favorite whipping girl, has been spending time with “Rush Hour” director Brett Ratner. They’ve been seen together in various modes of dining and socializing in the lobby bar and garden restaurant, according to my Hollywood spies. Of course, Lohan been seen with lots of famous types at the Chateau, my sources point out.

***

Ratner, who’s said to be giving Lohan advice and providing a shelter to her from the gossip storm, is a little too busy to do anything else right now. He’s finishing “X Men III,” which will debut in Cannes a few days before its May 26 opening in theaters. The $200 million comic book adventure is said to be better even than episodes 1 and 2. I’m told the Cannes debut is so hot that the entire cast is being invited to the annual AmFar dinner in Mougins, where star Hugh Jackman may be asked to perform along with Elton John and other surprise guests.

Let's hope so. I also heard though that one of the reasons they gave it such a big budget though was so that they could afford to shoot it as quickly as possible. SOme of the extra money went into everyone building sets at different locations at the same time and whatnot, which I think makes sense too.

Studios Throwing Money (Away) at Cannes

I'm told Sony Pictures is skipping the usual mind-numbing U.S. premieres for its tentpole summer picture The Da Vinci Code and substituting an absurdly lavish international junket aboard a specially outfitted Eurostar destined for the 59th Cannes Film Festival world premiere. The train will be diverted from London's Waterloo Station straight to Cannes (instead of Paris) for "all sorts of old-fashioned Hollywood fun" to amuse the film's stars and the world's press, sources gushingly tell me. Supposedly, each car will be decorated like a different chapter of the book -- as if the movie isn't already the most overhyped product around. (Speaking of London, High Court justice Peter Smith rules tomorrow on that copyright infringement case against the publisher of Dan Brown's omnipresent novel.) Then, the studio will bookend the fest by creating hoopla around Marie Antionette, its 18th century biopic entry starring Kirsten Dunst. I can't wait to see how the French respond to Sofia Coppola's attempt to make Miss "Let-Them-Eat-Cake" sympathetic.

Meanwhile, I'm told that Paramount will have its biggest presence at the May 17-28 festival in recent memory to coincide with the launch of its new global brand and its self-distributing in 15 of the major territories by 2007. And let's not forget about Fox's X-Men 3 (The Last Stand) and Warner Bros.' The Fountain bowing there.

So I've got to ask: Why in the world are these studios wasting their money? After all, the Cannes Film Festival in recent years has seemed little more than a quaint relic of a rich cinematic past ... a faded glory where a handful of stars jet in to prostitute themselves for one night before those hordes of photographers in front of the Palais des Festivals on the Boulevard de la Croisette, and then jet out again ... a tax-deductible excuse for Hollywood moguls to sponge off studios at the Hotel Du Cap or The Carlton ... a self-absorbed competition where a bunch of Europeans no one ever heard of judge -- more like ignore -- American movie product for the Palme D'Or. In other words, who gave a rat's ass? But all of a sudden, ooh la la, Hollywood is doing the can-can at Cannes this year. I say don't-don't. Frankly, I think it's spendthrift ego-feed. Nevertheless, Paramount will be showcasing newly acquired Dreamworks product, pushing the animated feature Over the Hedge and hosting a luncheon presentation of Dreamgirls with Eddie, Beyonce and Jamie. Also getting supersized treament will be the documentary, Al Gore: An Inconvenient Truth. And it's already been announced that the studio plans to show 20 minutes of Oliver Stone's World Trade Center. Making the trip is Paramount boss Brad Grey accompanied by Gail Berman and Rob Moore. The entire Sony bunch will also be there (though I hope little-heard-from John Calley will be invited since the former boss turned producer is responsible for buying the Da Vinci Code novel for Sony in the first place). C'est fou.

X-Men l'affrontement final

X3 will be indeed shown at Cannes out of the competition.

it show a great confidence in the studio on their movie, because if X3 is not a good movie , it will be especially trashed by the critics , Cannes being an arty competition..and this kind of publicity in Europe is not good ( on the other hand some movies like "Le Grand bleu" had disastrous critics at Cannes and became great hits, so we never know.. )personnaly, even if in general i have no problem to trust some critics, i have not as much with the "Cannes Critics" because i saw some really great movie being trashed there.(some have been rehabilitated later )

It will be interesting , anyways.

Loach up for Palme d'Or at Cannes

Ken Loach's latest film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, is in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Set during the Irish Civil War, it will compete with Pedro Almodovar's Volver and Sofia Coppola's Marie-Antoinette for the festival's top honour.
US director Richard Linklater is also in contention for his film adaptation of non-fiction book Fast Food Nation.

Last year's Palme d'Or was won by Belgian drama L'Enfant.
It is the eighth time Loach has been nominated for Cannes' most coveted prize.

The veteran British director has never won the honour but has been given other awards, including a lifetime achievement prize in 2004.

Also in the running this year is Il Caimano (The Caiman), a satirical portrait of Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi from director Nanni Moretti.

The Italian film-maker won the Palme d'Or in 2001 with The Son's Room. There are four French films in this year's line-up, including the latest movies from Nicole Garcia and Bruno Dumont.

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is nominated for his new film Southland Tales, while new films by Finland's Aki Kaurismaki and Mexican directors Guillermo Del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu also make the cut.

United 93, a recreation of the final hours of one of the planes hijacked on 11 September 2001, will be shown out of competition, as will blockbuster sequel X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Hugh Jackman and Kirsten Dunst are among the stars expected at this year's event.

It opens on 17 May with a gala screening of The Da Vinci Code, the film version of the controversial Dan Brown bestseller.

'DA VINCI' AND 'X-MEN' BRING STAR-POWER TO CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

PARIS, April 20, 2006 (AFP) - Stars from the "The Da Vinci Code" and "X-Men 3" are to spearhead the celebrity invasion at this year's Cannes film festival, according to details of the event released Thursday by organisers.

Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Ian McKellen are among the A-listers expected to walk the red carpet in the French Riviera resort during the May 17-28 festival.

Other top names include Bruce Willis, Cate Blanchett, Kirsten Dunst, The Rock, Willem Dafoe, Bob Hoskins, and Cannes jury members Samuel L. Jackson, Helena Bonham-Carter, Zhang Ziyi and Monica Bellucci.

Organisers said the festival -- the top showcase in the world for international cinema and the biggest gathering of movie industry executives -- would reinforce its role as a magnet for "art cinema, glamour, deals and the press".

"The Da Vinci Code" and the latest "X-Men" movie are to be shown out of competition, but will ensure a lightning storm of press coverage as the stars appear.

That's a very good question. Hopefully it was just an oversight or will be added later (but that's a big "hopefully") - sometimes I wonder if this movie was ever made!

Synopsis

In X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, the climactic chapter in the 'X-Men' motion picture trilogy, a 'cure' for mutancy threatens to alter the course of history. For the first time, mutants have a choice: retain their uniqueness, though it isolates and alienates them, or give up their powers and become human. The opposing viewpoints of mutant leaders Charles Xavier, who preaches tolerance, and Magneto, who believes in the survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test, triggering the war to end all wars.

Extracts of Dialogues

Xavier :
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is a lesson that every one of us must learn and live with. Why? Because we are mutants. Will it be for the greater good...or personal, destructive and tyrannical? This is a question we must ask ourselves. Why? Because we are mutants... Unfortunately, there are no absolutes when it comes to questions of ethics. For psychics, this presents a particular problem. When is it acceptable to use our powers and when do we cross that invisible line that turns us into tyrants over our fellow man?

Jeff Wells posted this on Hollywood Elsewhere this morning:

It's been revealed here and there that Brett Ratner's X-Men 3: The Last Stand (20th Century Fox, 5.26), which will show at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, 5.22, is quite violent. I learned a bit more last night upon speaking to a European exhibitor source who said he's seen it, and that the final violent sequence at the end is a bit reminiscent of the finale of Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (1969). It also resembles that western classic in the sense that two or three "good guys" -- i.e, mutant heroes -- buy the farm. Obviously we're not speaking of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, who may return in a film of his own down the line. The guy wouldn't tell me who buys it and I didn't want to know anyway.

I wish I was him, not knowing jack about the film going into it.

About some of the Xcasts interview in France , today ,i don't know if anyone talked about it , but i saw it:Very remarked entrance by Hugh , Anna , and Halle ( and later by Famke )the public was very enthousiastic.

One of the host said that the movie was the best of the three..the thing is that guy is very harsh with movies..when the movie makers are not there ;)

they showed some cool clips of the making off .some bits about Colossus and Rogue in the danger room , Wolverine berseker rage in the forest , kitty running in Alcatraz among soldiers ..the teaser , nice .the public was very enthousiastic

Apart from that: stand out, Hugh in his usual relaxed charming self talking about the philosphical aspect of the movie ( the cure and its implication)

Famke (who arrived later because of a dress ? Lol that's what she said ) really beautiful , blossoming , i mean there was Halle Berry , Anna Paquin and hugh , and personnally when she appeared no doubt that she she was the star of the show in my mind..the public seemed to agree and applauded her a lot..She talked a little with excitement about the fact that 'as we all know) she comes back ..different in the movie.. Phoenix is the most powerful of the mutants. I wouldn't be surprised to see Famke become a big star after X3...

Anna was super shy , and talked two or three words in french really nicely saying that "mon francais est trés mauvais" that her french is very bad" ..not so much :) charming.

and Halle , well she was beautiful , she joked a little with the host with the fact that she tried to have storm powers in real life ..ok :o and the host said that there is a region in france called Le Berry :o ......... Lol

Nice , and should be available on the net tomorow.

Hugh Jackman plays down sexy
Sunday May 21 09:17 AEST

Hugh Jackman has been voted one of Hollywood's hottest leading men many times.

But ask him about being sexy and he's quick to dismiss the notion.

"As an actor, I don't know how you play sexy," Jackman said at the Cannes International Film Festival where his latest film, X-Men: The Last Stand, is screening out of competition.

"I don't know how to do it (sexy). So it is no conscious choice on my behalf to do that."

Jackman's face has been on the cover of almost every magazine in Cannes this week, both as his X-Men character, Wolverine, and as himself.

He's also on a number of billboards and bus stop posters. But he plays that attention down.

"I see those posters and I think they're great," he said.

"I look at that and I see the character - I don't see me."

X-Men: The Last Stand also stars Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammar.

It's the third X-Men film, continuing the saga of the well-known Marvel comic super-powered characters such as Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Xavier and Rogue.

The first two X-Men films were directed by Bryan Singer, with the latest instalment helmed by Brett Ratner.

Early reviews of the film, which opens in Australia on Thursday, have described the Hollywood flick as "sexier" than the previous movies.

One scene sees Jackman in a love scene with Famke Janssen, who plays Jean Grey.

"To be honest, it is a bit weird making out with someone you do know well," he said when asked about the scene.

"When you just meet someone and you hop in the sack, it is kind of weird, but that is somehow a little easier than when you do know someone."

Jackman is in Cannes with his actor wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, who co-stars in Directors Fortnight film Jindabyne.

After promotional duties for X-Men, Jackman will return to Australia, ready to begin rehearsals for the national tour of his Broadway hit The Boy From Oz.

He's got several films slated for the coming year, including The Fountain, which will screen at the Venice Film Festival in September.

Also coming up for the actor is animated flick Flushed Away, Woody Allen's Scoop and Disney film If You Could See Me Now.

Jackman's also working on a Wolverine spin-off and ruled out any more X-Men films.

"I think it is the end of X-Men because I have heard from people fairly high up - I am not saying it is as high as Rupert Murdoch but pretty close to it - kind of say this is the end," he said.

"It is called The Last Stand so there is every intention that this is the end of the trilogy. Of course if you watch to the end of the credits, there are a few teasers there."

The Cannes Film Festival runs until May 28.

The back of the decoration... with mutants

Sonia Sarfati

The Press

To the screen, they fly, they read in the spirits, they nourish vital force of others, they heal time to shout "Sore!", they éructent the ice or they spit fire. In the true life, in interview around a round table, they are not badly more terre.à .terre. And funny. The proof...

PATRICK STEWART (CHARLES XAVIER)

"to prepare me with this role, I read piles and piles of comic books. It is one of the most pleasant research of my career ", admits the actor shakespearien who, for two years, has reinstalled himself in London, saw the dream of" speaking Shakespeare to length about day "(since it joined Royal Shakespeare Company) but its history of 17 years love with Star Trek does not regret: The Next Generation and six years with X-Men: "In fact stories have a substance and which does not deliver it in a way heavy and hard."

HUGH JACKMAN (WOLVERINE)

"I am youngest of five boys and, child, I did not have any capacity! When I felt pain or anger, I did not dare to express them in an external way. X-Men was a good therapy for me ", makes the actor who signed a contract for Wolverine, a prequel of X-Men; and which awaits impatiently the exit, with the autumn, of The Fountain where it holds the principal role in front of the camera of Darren Aronofsky: "This film is oscarisable and this realizer is an artist. He is next Kubrick ".

MARKET BERRY (STORM)

"This time, I love really my character. In two preceding films, I did not bring a point of view, I was spectator and not implied. For me, that did not tally with Storm which is a African princess. In its country, it was venerated for its capacities, and not ostracized like other mutants. She developed a strong personality... and, in my opinion, one did not feel that in X-Men and X2", indicates the actress who asserts the right to make choices - even bad (see another text).

ANNA PAQUIN (ROGUE)

"I worked tous.les.jours of my life since the turning of The Piano. At the time, I was very timid... and I am it still. Simply, I became good to speak the abroads - as you can realize it ", had fun the young actress around a round table where a handle was installed... foreigners. Passing from independent film (The Squid and the Whale de Noah Baumbach) to the méga-production ("For X-Men, I had roulotte larger than my apartment!"), it is said charmed, up to now, to have avoided the labels.

JIMMY MARSDEN (CYCLOPS)

"Thank you very much!" the actor esclaffé itself whereas the female journalistic race went there from a higher bid of: "Oh, he' S cute!" Which were addressed in fact to Licorice, Boston burrow from which Famke Janssen never separates (the rumour wants that it equips it in Prada and Burberry... but as one does not know the canine line of the designers, one could not check). "Thank you very much!" perhaps also the actor thought by reading the scenario of X-Men: The Last Stand, where waits... say, a surprise. One will not say which not to commit a crime of injure-punch.

FAMKE JANSSEN (Dr. Jean Grey)

"Ah yes, the scene of the kiss with Jimmy... We repeated much. It telephoned four months to me before the beginning of turning, it said to me that it had its working method for this kind of scenes and we put ourselves there ", has fun the actress who said herself" surprised to return: after all, I died in X2! But good... with the mutants, all is possible ". It will on the other hand not return in the skin of enigmatic Ava Moore of the Nip/Tuck series: "It is in Paris and will remain there. To bring back would be completely anti-climatic. You do not find?" One finds, yes.

BEN FOSTER (ANGEL)

"My preparation for this role? One stuck to me wings of five meters in the back and... Ben, not question of separating them during the day. Not even for the long moments of waiting enters the catches nor for the nap. I thus lay on the belly and, when I started again to turn, I had the reasons for the couch stamped on the face ", pouffe the actor which one remembers for his role Russell, the buddy with ambivalent sexuality (the sex of the angels?) of Claire in Six Feet Under... and which one prefers to forget in The Punisher.

AARON STANFORD (ICEMAN)

"the only common point between the films in which I took part, it is that I was terrified by the actors with whom I was to work: Sigourney Weaver, that I try to allure in Tadpole and Ian McKellen that I combat then which I join in X-Men", launches the actor who admits to be made more recognize for his incarnation of Iceman that for all its other confused roles: "However, it is probably the minor part which I had." In term of minutes to the screen, yes. In term of visibility, on the other hand...

DANIA RAMIREZ (CALLISTO)

"In order to be ready for the role, I made one month and half of kickboxing, bicycle, weight and deteriorate. I repeated then much the scenes of combat with Halle Berry, which is adorable. Except that my only concern, it was not to hurt me... but to wound it: I know which us two would have been expelled illico!" indicate the young actress who appreciated that these combat are... virile: "One was not there to scratch itself nor to draw the hair!" Let us guarantee that Halle Berry, Razzie of the worst actress for Catwoman, it as appreciated as there is not... a catfights.

KELSEY GRAMMER (THE BEAST/Dr McCOY)

"My daughter would like to become actress, his/her mother dreams that it becomes a star... and I do not know if it is the same thing. What I know, on the other hand, it is that it is not an extraordinary trade. I practise it because it is the only thing which comes really to seek me ", makes the actor who is played it here Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde since, of Dr. Crane of Frasier, it becomes The Beast, officially Dr. McCoy - a mutant with blue fur and impressive musculature: "It is what is called to break an image. But as nobody will recognize me, nobody will know it!"

-squeals- FAMKE!!!!!!!!!!! Gah... Can't wait to see it this friday. :D

I guess Hilton being there proves that if you rich you can do anything, no matter how annoying, untalented, and undeserving you are!

seeing all the pics, It's nice to think that they are THE X-MEN, you know, the x-men of the cinema, do you know what I mean?. More exactly, they have been the x-men, the three films have been the personal version of them on screen, different from the series and comics.

It's a little sad... don't know... thinking that was all.

For some reason I would have love more, something bigger, in a big scale... but I'm glad at least we have get this particular trilogy, being like it is, more than less like the comics, series, etc in some ways, in others not.

I think I'll never be satisfied with what we've get. This is like it was, and we should accept it. It's hard, but it's this way.
