Happenstance

Right ive been watching a lot of anime again recently both the movies and series.
Im in the mood for a new series to watch and could use some recommendations. Ive watched Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist, Street Fighter II V. Also bits of Ghost In The Shell and Naruto but I wasnt a massive fan of those.
Any suggestions on what to go for next would be great, more than one if possible so I can move on from one to the next.
EDIT: Also if you could briefly say what the series are about that'd be helpful! :p

I suggest you go watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
It appears to start out as a regular mecha anime, but the plot becomes more intricate as the show evolves. One recommendation. When you finish episode 24,don't go to episode 25,go watch End of Evangelion, the alternate ending.Much prefferable, trust me on this.
*long and spoilerish*
In 2000, a group of scientists conducted an expedition in Antarctica where a large being of light, deemed by them as the first Angel,Adam, was discovered. On September 13an attempt was made to capture it which ended in apparent failure when it proceeded to self-destruct, creating what would be called the Second Impact. The true nature of the Second Impact was concealed from the general public, who was led to believe that the devastation was caused by a small meteorite traveling close to the speed of light, impacting in Antarctica.
In the conflict with Angels, mankind is represented by the mysterious organizations NERV,GEHIRN(which started out as the investigation team for the Second Impact but became NERV later on), Seele, and the Marduk Institute. NERV is, in theory, under the control of SEELE, but NERV has its own agenda, driven by its commander Gendou Ikari. NERV carries out two tasks: to defend the Earth from Angel attack with a small number of Evangelions (Evas), and the Instrumetality Project, which, according to Gendou, is the path to becoming one with God.
The Evas have the outward appearance of massive humanoid robots and can apparently be piloted only by children conceived after the Second Impact. Pilots are selected by the Marduk Institute, which is later discovered to be composed of about 108 ghost companies, but Gendou Ikari and Ritsuko Akagi are actually in charge of selecting pilots. It is frequently speculated that qualifying pilots must have lost a mother, whose soul is used as the soul of the Eva. (This has been debated due to the probability that Rei is a clone of Yui and therefore doesn't have a technical 'mother' but some fans believe that Yui's soul was split between Unit 00 and Unit 01. This theory coincides with Rei and Shinji's ability to synchronize with each other's Evas.) The Evas also appear to behave under the influence of the soul inside it. One example is when Unit 01 goes "berserk," acts without control of its pilot or NERV and refuses to shut down (or in one instance, to start without Shinji). Unit 00 goes berserk and lashes out at the tormentors of Ritsuko Akagi's mother, apparently attempting to kill Rei. Though unit 02 does not ever go truly berserk, Asuka says in "The End of Evangelion" that she feels the presence of her mother protecting her in the Eva. The term "berserk" really only befits the actions of Unit 00; Unit 01's actions were focused, restrained, and beneficial to Nerv's missions.
Each Eva has its own designated pilot, due to the bond between the pilot's soul and the soul of the Eva; otherwise, any other person who tries to synchronize (simply put, to technically work as one mind) with the Eva is more likely to be refused. That is not to say that it is impossible to synchronize in such a situation, as is shown in an experiment in Episode 14, in which Rei and Shinji synchronize with each others' Evas. It is later apparent that the Evas are not really "robots" but rather living, biomechanical organisms, in contrary to the popular belief of the general public. While Ritsuko does mention at the beginning of the series that the Evas do have some biological components to them, the extent to which the Evas are biological is not immediately apparent; it is finally revealed, towards the end of the series, that Evas are essentially Angels (made from Adam, the first Angel, except unit 01 which is almost certainly made from Lilith, the second Angel) onto which mechanical components are incorporated during its creation — part of the reason being to restrain and control them.
The secret second task, the Human Instrumentality Project, intends to start an artificial evolution of mankind. Considering the religious implications of the term evangelion this event was said to bring about the salvation of mankind in the context of a newly created Earth and humanity's becoming one with God. SEELE is the main driving force behind this project, for reasons unknown, but they mention that humanity must evolve or it will die, thus the need for a forced evolution. This artificial evolution strives to merge all human souls into one by disposing the individuals of their AT Fields that separate egos from each other. This causes their bodies to revert to .LCL When everyone comes to this state, they will no longer feel the pain or loneliness that would typically precipitate from interaction between humans; it is comparable, but not equal, to death.
You'll understand if you watch.
Also,Hellsing is a must see.I'll just give you a link to this one.

man, I shoulda been the one to start this thread...
based on what you said you liked, I agree that you need to see Evanglion
I also recently watched and thoroughly enjoyed Gantz. Gantz is a hyperviolent series that begins with two highschools students being run over by a train while helping someone who fell on the tracks. After their bodies are torn apart, they suddenly appear in a small apartment over looking Tokyo. The room is barren, except for several other people, who all relate that they each just died as well, and a large black sphere. The people are confused, and do not know what's going on. The Black Sphere begins to sing, then text appears on it instructing them to go assassinate what appear to be aliens. the balls sides pop open to reveal a rack of guns. The people in the room are then trasported to a location near their targets. Those that survive the night are healed of their wounds, given "points" and released, until the sphere holds another game and brings them back to the room.
That's the basic set up, but there's several fascinating aspects to the series. One is that it goes very slowly and indepth. Across 24 episodes, the main characters only engage in 4 missions. The sphere, called Gantz, never tells them anything about why they're there, what it is, or what the aliens they're hunting really are. Much time is spent concentrating on the characters in their day-to-day, usually miserable lives outside of playing the game. In fact, I've never seen anything that goes to such spectacular lengths to establish the main character as a complete scumbag.
The violence is intense, and the nudity is frequent, but the extremism of the content seems to make the underlying messages of what's going with these people all the more vibrant. Visually, the series and its animation are top notch.
There's a slim case box set collection that has, I think, the first 12 episodes and I've seen for only $45 at Best Buy or Wal-Mart, that would be a pretty good bargain for you. Here's some pics from the series:

and here's the opening credits, which're pretty badass

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one ive considered over and over again, im not a big fan of mech anime but ive heard so many good things about it I figured I should at least give it a shot. From what I remember though I may have got confused on the order of it.
The rest i'll look up on an anime site and if I like the sound I'll get around to getting those aswell.

Duz anyone know where Yamiko picked up that English accent for the series. She didn't have it for the movie.
Oh and you gotta watch Galaxy Angel :D Halarious!! 5 females (ages varry) who are halarious. They're sposd to be looking for lost technology which no one knows anything about. It's in the future but they always get off track, and often take other jobs since they don't hve much to do. Funny stuff and great animation

NGE is NOT a mech series. Yes it has mechs in it, but it is nothing like Gundam, Robotech, Big O, Voltron, or other series like that. It is on a completely different level.
actually, it's probably on seven completely different levels

Oh, and I forgot Samurai Champloo.
I keep meaning to watch more of Champloo, but I've only gotten through the first disc.
To tell the curious a little more about it, Samurai Champloo takes place in fuedal japan, and is from the creators of Cowboy Bebop. The main characters are two Samurai, one a wild rogue and the other a disciplined Ronin, and a young waitress they become indebted to. I haven't watched enough of the series to know if there's any over acring plot, as the early stories seem self contained as the group journeys. The fighting and action scenes are grogeous to behold, beautifully animated, and often set to a hip-hop soundtrack, for a very intense effect.

The only Anime I can think of reccomending right now that no-one has probably mentioned already is Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. The name doesn't make a lick of sense, but basically all you need to know is that it's in the future and there are semi-organic robots called "Boomers" which are meant to fill the jobs that no-one wants, and occasionally they turn evil and ugly, so these hot chicks in cool mechanical armor show up to beat the crap out of them. If that doesn't pique your interst, then the show probably isn't for you. ^_^
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the entire show (I never got around to the last volume or two). My brother had the entire series on DVD but he ended up selling it. He apparently had mixed feelings towards the ending, but his overall opinion of the show was fairly high, and I liked the first few volumes I watched quite a bit.

For the OVA, Geneon went with what they felt was right. For the series, they decided to take the opinion of the creator of R.O.D. He said he always pictured that Yomiko would have a brits' accent. So they went with that. And besides, the Voice Actors from the OVA were no longer availible because of some union labor mumbo jumbo that kicked in a year or 2 later.

As for recommendations, you've already seen some good series'. If you liked Street Fighter V, you might want to check out Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie. It's the best anime based on a fighting game, IMO. Although, the Fatal Fury Motion Picture was pretty damn enjoyable as well.
Blood: The Last Vampire is a great little film with a really high production value, and some of the greatest atmospheric lighting I've ever seen in an anime.
Teropterids are evil beasts which pose as humans and live only to drink human blood. Fortunately for the human world there are groups dedicated to destroying them. A brooding and mysterious girl named Saya is the best teropterid slayer there is, and now, in 1960's Japan, she is sent to a U. S. army base which may be infested...

Duz anyone know where Yamiko picked up that English accent for the series. She didn't have it for the movie.
It's my understanding that Yomiko is half-brit.
Ok the absolute BEST anime series ever:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Samurai Champloo
Naruto
Bleach
Lupin The Third
Full Metal Panic
New stuff to watch out for:
Eureka Seven
GunXSword
Basilisk
Trinity Blood
Kage Kara Mamoru
Shuffle
Soul Link
Avoid Inuyasha at all costs. It's absolute GARBAGE.
Blue Seed also has 3 OVA's as well in addition to the 26 episodes. With the Momiji/Kusanagi relationship it's more like Inuyasha than Eva.

What's Love Hina about?
TheVileOne
04-09-2006, 10:25 PM
Love Hina is about a struggling student, Keitaro Urashima. He's unwittingly charged with the task of becoming the manager of the Hinata Hot Springs Inn by his grandmother.
It's girls only, and Keitaro is a bit of a clumsy pervert and that gets him into trouble with pretty much all of the girls. However, for some reason or another, pretty much all the girls end up either falling in love with him or become attracted to him in some way. The main romance of the series is between Keitaro and Naru. There's a big mystery because when Keitaro was a little boy he made a promise with a girl to go to Tokyo University with her. That's the girl he wants to be with supposedly.

I also love Overman King Gainer. One of the only Mecha shows I can stand.
I only have the first two though, because it's becoming hard to find (I'm assuming not very popular) and super expensive (30 bucks a disc and I have 4 more to collect. The first two I have I already spent 25 a piece on...)...

Here's a few recommendations:
Princess Nine - Just recently watched and really enjoyed it. It's about the start of an all girls highschool baseball team and their struggles to prove they're just as good as the boys.
Abenobashi - This show I really recommend watching subbed. I just couldn't get past the dubs take on the Osaka accent.
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Currently watching and finding it to be a cute show. It's about season fairys in training.
Happy Lesson - Like Love Hina it's a sort of "harem anime" where five teachers move in with a student to act as a new mom for him.
Gantz - Very cool show. Very graphic and vulgar.
Chobits - Angsty male lead finds hot robot babe in trash pile...
Fruits Basket - Reverse "harem anime" with female girl surrounded by a bunch of guys who change into zodiac animals when touched by opposite sex.
Outlaw Star - Couple guys turned space outlaws who get possession of a very advanced spaceship with a secret.
Naruto - I made fun of this show and "Narutards" so much, but after watching it I freackin' love it. >.<
Ai Yori Aoshi - Another type of "harem anime" involving one guy living with a group of girls.
L/R Licensed by Royal - Cool secret agent spy type show.
Full Metal Panic - Pretty awesome show involving military specialist turned highschool boy. Bonta-kun in the second series just kicks a$$.

This site can do a better job of describing the series than I can:
As mankind moves into the second half of the 21st century and expands its travel and business in space, debris orbiting the Earth has become a serious safety hazard. Even a single bolt, when propelled around the Earth at speeds of as much as 8 km/sec, can do catastrophic damage. Thus have companies doing business in space established Debris Sections to deal with the problem of collecting and disposing of space trash. This is the story of “Half Section,” the Debris Section of one particular company, and the staff of misfits whose thankless job it is to keep orbital paths free of defunct satellites and other dangerous junk.

This is the story of “Half Section,” the Debris Section of one particular company, and the staff of misfits whose thankless job it is to keep orbital paths free of defunct satellites and other dangerous junk.

...I must be a horrible anime watcher...
All the over rated shows (aside from Naruto, and Sailor Moon, and Inuyasha) I hate with a passion.
Paranoia Agent sucked in my opinion, Evangelion, I hate it, Cowboy Bebop... wish I had that time in my life back.
There are plenty others... but I'm more inclined to stick with my series that never got screen time in the US,

Rurouni Kenshin is a must
Definetly. Rurouni Kenshin is great. Also as others have said. Samurai Champloo is excellent. You already said you liked Cowboy Bebop (which I also am a fan of). Samurai Champloo is created by the same people so if you liked that style you should check it out. I really enjoyed it. Most of the shows other people have named are really good shows to check out.

I would recommend "Hajime No Ippo", or as it is called in America, "Fighting Spirit." It is a boxing anime centered around the journey of a timid High School student, Ippo Makunouchi, who enrolls in a boxing gym after a boxer saves him from some bullies.
The DVD releases are over halfway done(they are on episode 55 of 70 something). However, the dub isn't all that great and the subs get some of the termonolgy and references wrong. At one point they mention Sugar Ray Leonard, but the subs say Raynard and there is another point where some of the boxers are demonstating a boxing technique and the subs incorrectly lable it.
This is probably my favorite manga right now. Even though it is over 70 volumes long and still going it has GREAT pacing. The only downside to the anime is it stops RIGHT before the best fight of the series takes place. But unfortunatly it was up against Final Fantasy Unlimited at the time and couldn't compete.

Visually he looks more like a lankier version of Spike Spigel. Not sure whether he can be compared to Vash in terms of visuals or characteristics. I wish I knew how to post images, that way you'd know what I'm talking about. He's more like Spike because he seems pretty laid-back but not as happy. Also he has this vengeance thing going. Latest I've seen is this show I dled from the net called....Uta....urm....Utawarerumon(?). Typical fantasy styled Harem affair with fluffy tailed girls, elven girls, winged girls, assortment of other girls I've yet to see but probably exist. I'm told it was based on a Strategic RPG with some H elements. The series is that, I suppose, sans the H like Tsukihme and Fate/Stay Night though I'm a fan of neither

Sounds like it might be Utawarerumono.
Hakuoro has lost his memory after succumbing to serious injuries; but thanks to a elderly woman and her granddaughter Eruruu, he is nursed back to health. His face is covered by a strange irremovable mask and he occasionally sees beastly visions. Eruruu now cares for him as he becomes accustomed to the village and its inhabitants who all bear strange ears (the women have tails too). Though these people venerate the forces of nature, desecration of an alter forces them to take drastic measures to preserve their lives from the wrath of Mutikapa-sama, guardian of the forest.

You should give Planetes a try. It's more of a drama than an action oriented series, but it has enough humor and action-based tense dramatic sequences to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Zatch Bell has it's own frikin card game. It's a Pokemon rip off.
Mamodo get sent to the human world to find human partners who can read their special books so the human can read the spells and make the mamodo do something. In short the mamodo can't do a blasted thing on their and need a human to tell them what to do so they can beat up other mamodo doing the same thing.
Tries to be all serious but is more annoying than Bobobo IMO. I'm pretty sure it's Gray Delisle doing the voice of Mamodo Z in the English dub, but she does the exact same voice she does for Wooya (sp?) on Xiaolin Showdown. When I her those parts, I forgot that Zatch was on and kept wondering where the heck all the Xiaolin apprentices were.

Just finished the entire run of Hanaukyo Maid Tai, OAV and all. I've been getting back into anime a series at a time thanks to YouTube, and it was one of the first that popped up in a search.
Lots of throwaway fanservice, and while some of the maids seem like caricatures of other characters from Read or Die, Love Hina, Tenchi, and Ah! Megami-Sama!, it's to be expected. Originality isn't in high demand as far as anime is concerned. Not bad, really, and it's only 15 episodes at 15 minutes each, so you can knock it out in around 4 hours.
