Yeah too bad The Question has to die for Montoya to complete her unnecessary character cycle.
he's not dead yet. i'd rather have him live and remain the question, but if he does die, i'd rather have renee take over for him that some new schmuck character they just arbitrarily created.

Eh. I'm sure he'll live, and just pass the torch. Or there will be two Questions.

They were referred to as "The Questions" once by Manhiem. I would have no prob with renee being a question if Vic was still alive and questioning.

I hope they don't kill him. I'd rather have him retire for a while... But the way DC has been going lately, then can't seem to just retire characters, they have to kill them off.

He's not dead yet...I kind of wonder if he will now...maybe that is the hook of that story, that he fakes his own cancer to use Montoya. Certainly wouldn't be a first for Vic Sage, manipulating people into helping him.

You're not alone.
This is one of the few recent character-switches that I can actually get behind. This isn't some out-of-the-blue "oh my god, a new Blue Beetle!!!1one" thing, or bringing Batwoman back out of nowhere. We've been watching the entire build-up of Question teaching Renee to think like him for months, now.
People wouldn't be so b****-moany about Renee as the new Question if we didn't just get new minority versions of Atom, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, and Batwoman.
Personally, I'm happy to see more diversity in the DCU. The "pasty white guy-to everybody else" ratio in the DCU is really out of whack. This shouldn't be much of a suprise--many of the DCU heroes and villians were created in the 40s, where diversity was unheard of.

I don't really see it happening anytime soon, or at all even. But with the way that DC has been killing characters off it wouldn't surprise me if it happened. But do you honestly think that anyone could have made a 36 issue series out of just Rorschach?
Yeah Alan Moore or Frank Miller. Rorschach wasn't a one dimensional psycho.
[QUOTE]
[QUOTE]Ditko's version wasn't that fleshed out as a character. And doubt may very well become a driving force in someone's life if they go through the **** Vic went through in O'Neil's series. Besides, he got over his doubt. That was a low period in his life that he is now past.
I'm sure Ditko could put him through the ringer & still keep his ideals intact. In fact Rand's novel the Fountainhead is about that exactly.
Vic wasn't even religious. The most buddhist thing he ever did was meditate. And you can be a complete athiest and still meditate.
Maybe I see things differently but having him educated by Richard Dragon was Oneil trying to cut the character's cord from his rationalistic roots. An Objectivist wouldn't meditate or entertain any form of mysticism.
Here's the deal: No one is infalible. You say that Ditko's Question would never quit. But Ditko's Question never went through a fraction of the **** that he did under O'Neil's pen. Yes, he quit. That was a low point in his life where he had lost hope and confidence. But he regained that hope and confidence. He came back. He's not a completely different character if he had doubts and fears that he no longer has.
Do you think Rorshach would have quit?
And Ditko's Question may have been arrogant but he was sure of his purpose he did the right thing (in his eyes no matter what)
The change was nowhere near that drastic.
Wasn't that the Question living in South America. It was something Ditko's Question would never have done.
And I honsetly don't see that huge a difference. Vic became alot more laid back and slightly more forgiving. That's it. O'Neil didn't contradict the character. He built upon him.
I think they're very different characters. All you need to do is se how they would react to situations.
Ditko's Questions could give a crap about a murderer and wouldn't feel unsure about murdering him.
We know Oneil's would go about it in a different manner.
Maybe. But it's equally likely that they would have liked and respected each other and simply not bring up polotics when they were together. People can be good friends and disagree strongly on issues like that. And Vic and Ollie weren't good friends to begin with. They teamed up three times to deal with things that they were both morally opposed to and their veiws on polotics and society never came up.
The political differences would be if Ayn Rand wrote a movie for Michael Moore to direct. There should have been at least some conflict.
I really don't see how he was so fundamentally different. He changed. He grew. But he was still the same basic person. The biggest difference is that he tended to replace long winded speaches about morality with bad jokes. And that's more writing style than anything else.
I think the character was explored in different ways. And Oneil & Ditko used him for different ends.
I think Oneil & Ditko have drastically different views & the Question reflected that in some way.
They were interesting but while Oneil's was written better. Ditko's was a more primal character and imho very unique.
Well at least Oneil didn't make him a magical city Shaman...
Oh wait ;)

The Question
01-14-2007, 06:17 PM
Yeah Alan Moore or Frank Miller. Rorschach wasn't a one dimensional psycho.
I didn't say he was. But I really can't see a 36 issue series that's solely about Rorschach working.
I'm sure Ditko could put him through the ringer & still keep his ideals intact. In fact Rand's novel the Fountainhead is about that exactly.
And I could put him through the ringer and have him become a militant islamist political activist. A writer can take any character in pretty much any direction. But the point is that while Vic did faulter in his convistions, he didn't stay faltered (if that makes any grammatical sense.)
Maybe I see things differently but having him educated by Richard Dragon was Oneil trying to cut the character's cord from his rationalistic roots. An Objectivist wouldn't meditate or entertain any form of mysticism.
Meditation is not mysticism. Meditation can be used in spiritual and metaphysical experiences. But it can also be used for solely personal and psychological ones. There is nothing inherently mystical about it. One can be an athiest and meditate. One can be a Christian and meditate. One can hold any religious philosophy on the planet and still meditate.
Do you think Rorshach would have quit?
No. But Rorschach was The Question 20 years later and much crazier.
And Ditko's Question may have been arrogant but he was sure of his purpose he did the right thing (in his eyes no matter what)
I'm not saying otherwise.
Wasn't that the Question living in South America. It was something Ditko's Question would never have done.
That was a low point in his life. But he came back. And you can't say that the character is completely different if he corrected his mistakes and out-of-character descisions.
I think they're very different characters. All you need to do is se how they would react to situations.
Ditko's Questions could give a crap about a murderer and wouldn't feel unsure about murdering him.
We know Oneil's would go about it in a different manner.
O'Neil had Vic not enjoy killing things based solely on the fact that a majority of people wouldn't enjoy killing if they did it. And it's funny you mention "giving a crap" about the bad guys. The one time Vic really did that, trying to save the life of someone who tried to kill him, it came back to bite him in the ass.
The political differences would be if Ayn Rand wrote a movie for Michael Moore to direct. There should have been at least some conflict.
Why? Why should polotics even come up at all?
I think the character was explored in different ways. And Oneil & Ditko used him for different ends.
Yes, that is very true. But then all writers explore characters in different ways and use them for different purposes.
I think Oneil & Ditko have drastically different views & the Question reflected that in some way.
But I don't think it was in as big a way as you do.
They were interesting but while Oneil's was written better. Ditko's was a more primal character and imho very unique.
I just don't see it how you do. It's the came character. He just went through some things and came out slightly changed on the other end.

Probably a goof. Luke was Plastic Man's son in The Kingdom, Ernie seems to be the name of his son in the current DCU, however Johns refers to the Offspring that showed up in TT as Luke. So confuzzled.
Johns problem is he needed to be more original with the "One year gap" Titans characters.

I don't think Offspring was ever named in the Kingdom.
Apparently, Geoff Johns' script for TT #whateverthecck says that the character is indeed "Luke." So how they managed to come up with "Ernie," a name that has never appeared anywhere before, is beyond me. Especially considering that Johns himself is a 52 writer.

No, Luke was Plas' son's name in the current DCU as introduced by Kelly in his JLA run. If you didn't read it, you are a giant monkey fart.
Sweet Lords of Kobol. These people making a completely avoidable mistake like this totally validates my lack of faith in their sexual competency.

I think it was Johns that said that. But still.
I don't see it as lying I see it as them realising what a cop-out it would be having Supernova as a main mystery in 52 then not even bothering to reveal his ID in the same series.
Or we won't know who it is next week.

The New Year begins with the deadliest day Metropolis has ever seen — and by the end of the month a villain will stand revealed, a hero will fall in the outer reaches of the galaxy…and the reveal of Supernova will deepen his mysteries even further.
I'm not expecting to be any closer to knowing who Supernova is after this week. I'd love to learn who it is, but it seems like Supernova is going to say or do something that's going to **** up everything even further.

And that's what makes it so brilliant. It's like watching an episode of Scooby Doo. The creepy, scary old man is the obvious choice, but the old man's friendly-looking nephew is always the real culprit. You just come to expect that the least obvious man is the one behind the mask. They turned that around on us, and gave us the obvious choice.

See, mix really intelligent and inspiring, counter with my own, then see as he adapts well, and THAT'S the key critical feature.

If you wanna solve it for yourself, don't highlight the below blackouted text.
The secret of Fifty-Two is that the multiverse still exists.
Hnn. Not very much of a spoiler, seeing as how a lot of other titles have already touched on it.

Well, let's look at it this way:
So far, Animal Man, Booster, and Question have been feared dead.
Do you think that keeps them safe?
Let's see who's absent in OYL
Renee, Steel, Natasha, Black Adam, Adam Strange, Starfire,Isis, Ralph. So about anyone who the 52 website has a section devoted to.

I was so eager to get to the Supernova reveal this week, that I didn't even notice the cover before I opened the book. Upon seeing the reveal, I let out a nice, muted, yet meaningful F-bomb right in the middle of my LCS. The obvious move that had been kicked around since Booster's 'death'. I did like the turn of events for Buddy (even if it all seems very hasty), especially the WTF moment at the end.

I chuckled in the comic book shop. It's like "The secret's out, b****!" One of the biggest secrets in 52, and the answer was splashed all over the cover. Awesome.
