Hi!
This is a thread to compare the reboot of the Batman movies with the reboot of the Batman cartoon series.
So, which one do you like the most:
-"Batman Begins" Batman or "The Batman" Batman?
-"Batman Begins" Alfred Pennyworth or "The Batman" Alfred Pennyworth?
-"Batman Begins" James Gordon or "The Batman" James Gordon?

No, it's not even like comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing... apples and that crap i scraped off the bottom of my shoe this morning. The Batman is by far the worst interpretation of the comics I have seen to date. I mean... at least B&R was so bad it was funny.

Batman Begins wins. The Batman is a kids version of the batman for reinvention. lol@ people taking it seriously and thinking it's a bastardization. It's not built to compliment grown and long term comic book readers like Timm/Dini's era. So as a kids show its ok
ChrisBaleBatman
04-10-2006, 05:28 PM
Yeah.......Begins simply owns the toon. BTAS is the overall better of the BATMAN cartoon. everything, from script to use of characters is outweighed by the BTAS.
The only thing that the BATMAN has over BTAS is visuals, the BTAS is rather dated.....but, if you wonder what BTAS might look like if done today, look at JLU.

I liked the original Batman movies better than begins. It just didn't seem like the same Batman from the older comics. Batman is not supposed to be totally serious. And until the recent comics and movies he never was.

Was that harsh? sorry it had to be said, look at what happened with Batman Forever and B&R when went with "lighter" did it work? no.
ToddIsDead
04-10-2006, 05:49 PM
Read the first five or ten years of Batman comics. They were pretty damn serious. Anything after 1968 was all about getting Batman back to his serious roots. The Batman comics that were goofy only lasted about two decades. The only "light" Batman movies were the Adam West stuff, and the Schumacher movies. Many fans, including myself, do not believe this to be the true Batman.
ChrisBaleBatman
04-10-2006, 05:52 PM
Batman Begins had some corny lines....that made it lighter. Not light enough to kill the film or hurt it...but light enough for the film to be fun for....well, outsiders.

I dont think you need to read a single Batman comic to know Begins was more serious/dark and "grown up" than Schumacher/Burton counterpart but whether or not you enjoyed or not depends on what you expect from an adaptation. Sometimes an adaption can work without being faitheful, having fantasy fiction and be charismatic (89-97).But if you want to show the essence of the popularity of the mythology and storyline while showing how realistically a Batman story may work justifying universal appeal Begins wins. It all depends on perspective

I do read the comics, and yes alot of the more recent stuff is dark, but that is not how Batman started out.
Batman started out killing people
then went campy to be more "kid friendly"
during this time he fought space aliens and wore a zebra batman suit
then since those sold badly after a while they went dark again
and more into the detective realm
then it became more violent
and more dark
but of course he doesn't kill
so you need to study before posting

Mister J

The original Batman was meant to be a dark and menacing character. He killed criminals, casually gunning them down or breaking their necks without remorse. Initially he even had problems with the police who viewed him as a nuisance.
Humor was not a major element. The appearance of such can be attributed from today's perspective. What was intended to be menacing in the late 30's/early 40's can easily be construed as campy/humorous today. The decision to include lighter fare later on was made to make the character more relateable to the it's audience of children (good relations with the police, Robin, more comic relief).
Bob Kane and Bill Finger stylized Batman on the old pulp magazines that were grim and lacking in humor. When the became clear that the character was a success, it underwent certain changes to maximize popularity. It's documented that Kane regretted the disappearance of the solitary and sinister Batman of the early days.
No way did Batman start out light-hearted, nor should he be portrayed that way.

Not really fair to compare The Batman to Begins or TAS. The Batman is directed at kids, and as such is a lot better than many shows for the same audience. And it fares well against older cartoon versions of Batman. Scooby-Doo meets Batman abd Robin, Superfriends, etc., all make TB look like Shakespeare by comaprison. Even tho i'm a 52 yr. old Bat-fart, I like it just fine.

Why do people insist on calling the Joker in this show either Rasta Joker or Jamaican Joker? Those aren't dreadlocks he's sporting, folks, it's just really long and unkempt hair. No doubt meant to make him look even more of a maniac along with the red eyes and bare feet. I really don't think this or any of the other character redesigns are all that out of line. They're not much worse than the liberties taken in any of the movies.

That's your opinion. I like it just fine and don't think the shows as bad as some seem to think. Funny thing is, the basic reason given 90% of the time that The Batman "sucks" is because it's not BTAS, by a bunch of fans who would rather live in the past and not judge the show on it's own merits. IS it as good as BTAS? By no means. Is it the worst animated Batman ever? No, And I challenge anyone to watch the old Filmation and Hanna-Barbera versions and tell me that with a straight face

Batman Begins to me is the best movie ever :D I just love it...but The Batman is an awesome TV show, I feel that they've used elements from Begins to fuel it up. The way they've remade the charcters origins(villians mainly) is awesome, the animation style is cool, they even have Batgirl ;) and soon Robin. The only problem is that they've over-exagerrated the Joker's design. Still Batman Begins rules all!

The Batman cartoon is just the symbol of what cartoons have become this day and age. Dumbbed down, inconistent, very flashy with no actual substance....with no real space for adults to enjoy it. That's what it really is. Most cartoons have become that. Add to the fact that the Magna/anime style has had a major influence in animation in the past 5 years.....and you get a rather odd Japanese-copy cat-American type thing. And the visuals are great, no doubt. It's the best thing about the show. The rest though....meh.
