View Full Version : More on the return of Rachel Dawes
Lone Wolf

In other Bat-Sequel news, I'm starting to hear a few rumblings that Katie Holmes may not return to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes and there could be a new female lead -- more on this in a second (All you Katie fans don't need to send me hate email as I'm on the record saying that she should return)...
BOF has also been told by a couple of insiders that the new film will include a few "classic Bat-Rouges," which would seem to give the rumor of The Penguin's appearance some substance. Now back to the Katie Holmes scuttlebutt... With rumors of her not returning making the rounds and talk that a few Bat-baddies may be included (in cameos for the most part I presume), I wonder if one Ms. Kyle could possibly in the mix? Perhaps THE LONG HALLOWEEN-style (That's just my suggestion dear readers). We shall see...

Also, there's a new enlarged picture of Hulme which was posted in the other thread. I'm sure some of you saw it, here it is but slightly bigger.

Honestly? I hope to hell she comes back. If nothing else than to get killed off, but I really hate it when characters are skipped over in sequels. I wouldn't mind her taking second to a new female lead, and become a supporting female, even. Just as long as she came back.

I agree completely. I hate when they leave out the female lead and not even say why or give a reason, like Vicki Vale just missing for no apparent reason in Batman Returns. I think they should keep Katie Holmes as Rachel and kill the character off or have her leave Gotham. If Katie Holmes can't return then just give a good reason why she's gone although that won't be as good.

I want to see a slimmed down Hulme as the Joker. His face just looks too pudgy in the pic and I imagine his body is the same or bulky, which I could do without either.

I wholeheartedly agree with both of you . . . bring the beeyitch back and kill her in the first scene!! How bad-@$$ of an opening would that be!!?? The Joker just kills dat @$$ as an opener!! It's not like she has any real roles lined up, as far as I know . . . only thing is, with her new high-profile lifestyle, she probably wouldn't be open to a cameo that just kills her off

If Rachel is not going to be in the sequel, it should be explained why not, on the other hand I like the news of the possiblity of Selina.

If Holmes finally decides not to reprise the role, what do you think of a possible recast? Just because she may not return doesn't mean the character can't show up again in the franchise. Not to mention alot of people didn't like the choice of Holmes when she was cast in BB.

Eh. Not a fan of it. While Holmes wasn't liked by alot of people, I personally thought she did good with what she had. Though, I guess... if they can get someone who looks enough like her and is a good actress at the same time, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Just an option, since I too think it's a bad idea to completely get rid of the character without a proper explanation why or where she went off to. If memory serves, when the Holmes rumor first came about back in November, Jett named a potential replacement. Jennifer Connelly was his pick.
Katie Holmes to quit acting?
Author: Jett (http://batman-on-film.com/bio_jett.html)
Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 6:00 AM CENTRAL TIME: According to online reports (I found this story in THE DIGITAL SPY (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds26191.html)), Katie Holmes will stop acting now that she is to be a mom. Stay at home, etc. Hey, as a parent, I can certainly understand that. (I will say if this is indeed the case - this story did originate in a UK gossip newspaper - I would hope they would re-cast the role, and not dismiss the character from the sequel. I actually like the character of Rachel Dawes and hope that she is in the next film. Jennifer Connelly (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000124/) anyone? Anyway, enough of this editorial.)...
Though I'm not a huge fan of it, I'll accept it if she looks alot like Holmes, but I'll still have her killed off early on.

Jennifer Connely would've been absolutely perfect for the role. If they had used her in the first place, with Begins. But since Holmes' image and youth was already established in the role, her replacement should represent both of those, at the very least. (If she's to be replaced at all, anyway...)
Seriously, though, Connely would've eliminated most of the complaints towards Begins, I feel, had she taken the role of Rachel.

This news is both good news and bad news - IMO. I like continuity - so the thought of Rachel not in BB2 is a little sad. The good news is that one of my favorite back characters could get into the action faster than I though, and there will be no more Katie Holmes.
That being said:
Natalie Portman IS Selina Kyle....

I want Katie Holmes to return. At least the character. a lot of people are against this but i think her situation can lead to good plot points.
1.) She has no Batman history and serves no purpose to continuity that means she's expendable and should die. Its good for a hero to have some sense of loss. I feel they dont tackle the death of the Waynes good enough. They use it as a starting point of batman, but on emotional level they dont use it enough. Only when Liam Neeson was involved was their any real emotional level. Plus the court case in hindsight.
2.) She knows Batman and Bruce are the same person which puts her in danger and makes her valuable to villains. She would prolly have obvious ties to bats since she works in the DA office and quite possibly the new DA.

You know... this doesn't bother me. The end of Begins made it clear that Bruce and Rachel weren't going to be together. So she won't be in the movie. Works for me. Maybe she split town because it was too difficult seeing Bruce's face in the newspaper every day.
Maybe she ran out west and joined a cult with an insane midget twice her age.
Or... maybe that's too close to reality.

Holmes' 'Passive' Behavior Stuns Interviewer
Pregnant actress Katie Holmes stunned a magazine journalist when she accompanied fiance Tom Cruise on a recent interview, by acting in a "dazed, passive and vacant" manner. The former Dawson's Creek beauty, 27, sat quietly beside Cruise as he opened up about his abusive father Thomas Mapother III to Parade reporter Dotson Rader. In the Parade interview, Rader writes, "Holmes wore a large diamond engagement ring. She seemed dazed, passive and vacant. She never stopped smiling." Rader was stunned to notice Holmes kept smiling, even as the Top Gun star recalled the beatings he suffered as a child.

Infact heres the transript
Jay Leno: ...one of Hollywood's most talented young actresses, she's currently starring in the film Beautiful Girls, please welcome Natalie Portman.
[Natalie walks out and shakes hands with first guest Troy Aikman and then sits down.]
JL: Did you meet Troy?
Natalie Portman: Not before the show.
JL: Ahh, not before the show.
NP: Umm, this seat is really uncomfortable.
JL: It is?
NP: Could I sit in your seat?
JL: Sure.
NP: Could I?
JL: Uhh... all right. You can sit in my seat.
NP: Thank you.
JL: All right, sit in my seat.
[They switch chairs: Natalie sits behind the desk and Leno sits next to Aikman. Jay doesn't look very happy about it.]
NP: Whoo! [She spins in her seat and then starts awkwardly pretending that she's the host interviewing Leno.] Umm, what's it like being a talk show host?
JL: Uhh, pretty slow.
NP: I'm having fun though.
JL: Oh, you're having fun?
NP: That's cuz you're not being very responsive.
JL: Now you know how hard my job is exactly.
NP: I'm sorry... I'm sorry.
JL: Now where do you live? You grew up where?
NP: Umm, I grew up... I grew up all over the place. I was born in Israel and then I moved...
JL: Oh, you were born in Israel?
NP: Yeah. And then I moved to Maryland and Connecticut, and now I live in New York.
JL: So, so, you're in, are you, are you cutting school to be here now?
NP: No, this is President's Week!
JL: You get the...
NP: Who's your favorite president?
JL: Oh, that would have to be Polk.
NP: Okay.
JL: Now let me ask you, you get the whole week off? When I was in school, we got the day off. You get the whole week for President's...
NP: Yeah, we get the whole week.
JL: Really??
NP: Yeah, our teachers don't like us.
JL: Where do you go to school?
NP: [Hesitates before answering, then turns to the audience] No stalkers please! [laughs]
JL: Do you go to private school or regular school?
NP: I go to regular school. I go to public school.
JL: Oh, uh, that's kinda fun.
NP: You went to public school, right?
JL: Yes I did. Yes I did. There were some mix-ups with my grades, but yes I did go to...
NP: [laughs]
JL: It was a slight problem... Do you have pets?
NP: Yeah, I have a dog. Noodles. But she always like... she's kinda tough because like... she has all these operations, she's had all these weird operations.
JL: What, cosmetic surgery?
NP: No, well... when we first got her, you know we had to get her spayed, and then she went outside and she was playing and she sat down on the grass and she got a thorn in her butt so we had to get that removed.
JL: Oh, believe me, I've had that in mine before and, man... I have had one for...
NP: And then she... y'know, on rainy days she likes to eat slugs.
JL: She eats slugs?
NP: Yeah, and so she went out and ate slugs and her mouth got glued shut! And so we had to get it, like, opened.
JL: Is this animal still ALIVE?
NP: Yeah. And then she got her anal glands removed. [The audience reacts and Natalie laughs and makes a face.] Because... Okay, see she marks... she's part schnauzer and schnauzers mark their territory.
JL: Mark their territory...
NP: And so she started marking US, because she thought, y'know, WE were her territory, and it's this really bad smell. So umm, we had to get the anal glands removed.
JL: And what did you do with them?
NP: Well, they still have them in the little glass jar in the animal hospital.
JL: Oh... [sarcastically] That's a fascinating story.
NP: Do you have a pet?
JL: Uhh, I have a... I have some anal glands from some animals... but yes I have a cat, actually my wife has a cat.
NP: Really.
JL: It's a lovely cat. Now how do you do in school? Do you do well?
NP: Yes, I do very well.
JL: Do you do good in school? Really?
NP: Are you surprised?
JL: No no, it's just when you get weeks off...
NP: Do I strike you as a stupid person?
JL: NO NO! Not at all. You strike me as a very bright, intelligent woman.
NP: Thank you!
JL: How 'bout your folks? What does your dad do?
NP: My dad's an infertility specialist.
JL: Oh, is that right?
NP: Yeah.
JL: Well, he couldn't be that good, you're here.
NP: [Pretends to laugh at his "joke".]
JL: Well that's kind of fun, that's kind of a neat job, I mean so, like, when you would go to school and people say what do your parents do, I guess you would say he's an infertility specialist.
NP: Yeah, I say he gets people pregnant. What do your kids say when they go to school? Do you have kids?
JL: Uhh I don't have any kids.
NP: You don't?
JL: I am an infertility specialist myself. In fact, I'm doing pretty good.
NP: So umm, so Troy...
JL: I like being a guest. Now, are you a football fan?
NP: Umm I aah... I can't say that I am. I'm sorry.
JL: Did you know who he was before he got here?
NP: [Cringes, embarrassed] I'm sorry! [The audience starts to boo her. Aikman stares off into space.]
JL: Don't like the job so much now, huh? Oh, when the audience turns on ya, oh boy. So, are you a big sports fan? Do you like... are there sports that you like? [Natalie says something negative] Not much of a sports fan? Well, that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. Any boyfriends?
NP: Umm... you? [laughs]
JL: Now I AM going to jail. Are there other actors, like what actors do you like? Who do you like? What, uhh, any young actors? Not necessarily boyfriends, but uh what young actors? Who would you like to work with? Like a young actor.
NP: Wow... Umm, I'd love to work with John Turturro.
JL: John Turturro? Yeah he's...
NP: He's great. And Ben Kingsley.
JL: Ben Kingsley?
NP: Yeah. And I don't know who else.
JL: Any younger guys like, uhh, DiCaprio? What's his name?
NP: Leonardo DiCaprio?
JL: Yeah, Leonardo DiCaprio.
NP: He's good.
JL: He's good. Well, how did you get discovered exactly? I mean, you were going to school, did you...
NP: Umm, I was on the Jerry Springer show and it was like kids with weird talents.
JL: Oh that's right, people who have their animals' anal glands removed.
NP: And there was an agent in the audience and she just saw me.
JL: You were on the Jerry Springer show?
NP: NO! You're so gullible!
JL: Well, this is how old guys get in trouble with young girls. Isn't it just terrible but any... d'you... [to camera] We'll be back... [to Natalie] Do you like Green Day?
NP: [By this point Natalie is writing something on a piece of paper, and barely looks up to respond.] Yeah, they're great.

More Katie Kraziness,
KATIE Holmes has been banned from speaking to her baby for a week after it is born, it has been reported in Closer magazine. The pregnant actress has agreed not to talk to her new arrival, believed to be a girl, for at least seven days after she has entered the world, in accordance with fiance Tom Cruise's Scientology beliefs. Katie, who is due to give birth any day, has already promised Tom she will deliver the child in complete silence, and she will also have very little contact afterwards.

That's not true. That can't be true... That's just too insane to be true. I hear all this crap about Scientology, and it's just so insane and unbelievable, and I usually believe it anyways, but this is too much. That's the most insane, ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and I'm seriously having trouble believing that it's true.

Trust me. It's true.
The real question is, when Katie screams her lungs out during delivery, due to the mind-bending, blinding pain, will Tom Cruise disown her and the child?
Or will she rip Tom's head off his tiny body and yell, "YOU DID THIS TO ME, YOU F#&!NG GREMLIN!!!" thus making Tom's opinion a moot issue, on account of his sudden and comical demise?

Well, her character had enough closure in BB so she could be skipped without causing a hole in the overall story. Itīs not like the Vicky Vale situation where she ends the movie being fine with Bruceīs dual identity and then sheīs written off in the sequel with a couple lines.
I think itīd be cool to see some villains have cameos in the sequel to then get a larger role in the third movie, kinda like the Joker card thing in BB.

I'm indifferent either way. I thought Katie Holmes to her credit did a good job (primarily cause I had low expectations, her delivery on some lines was kinda weak but still). In terms of contiuity, yeah bring her back (if she wants) but if not at least give some sort of explination that is legible.
If she's out of the picture then I think having Selina Kyle in would be interesting (not as catwoman just as Selina Kyle).

If Holmes does not want to return then i say NO to Dawes coming back. This is because, she cannot have a big part in the sequel, so casting another girl is so pointless.
However, at most i just want her mentioned. Infact i dont care if no-one ever mentions her again. But hopefully she will have left Gotham for some reason and Dent is the DA for the sequel.

Maybe it'd be cool to have Rachel's exit be an homage to one of the most remembered events in Bat-lore:
The Killing Joke.
Movie starts out:
You wouldn't even need to show the face of Rachel. Just have a woman reading by the lamp, her face poorly lit. doorbell rings or there's a knock at the door. She gets up, goes to the door, peers through the spyhole. Can't make out the shadowy figure on the other side. Opens door, there stands the evil grin of the Joker... BLAM. She's dead.
Next scene, Bruce hears the news and finds out it was the same elusive maniac he's been trying to get for the last few weeks/months.
Awesome way to inject instant tension/action/emotion and pure hatred for the Joker in a very very quick scene. Also sets the scene for the arrival of Dent.

If Holmes doesn't return, I'd hope atleast that another actress replaces her. I don't want to see the character for forgotten about, without a proper explanation as to why she isn't in Gotham anymore. Jennifer Connelly was brought up as a possible replacement, which I wouldn't mind.

Recasting by itself is a bad idea, but recasting a minor role? It would just seem wierd recasting Rachel when she's not that important, and was given a decent farewell at the end of Begins. It's not like B'89 or BF, where the end makes you think they'll live happily ever after. They pretty much broke off any hope of a relationship at the end of Begins, so I dont see a reason for her to stick around unless it's for her to die.

Rachel Dawes was probably the worst part of "Batman Begins" and now that Katie Holmes is the slave to Tom Cruise don't expect her to be going back to work ever again under his tight leash. :spidey:

I don't like re-casting......for two reasons
1. It will cause an unecessary distraction to the film
2. Why re-cast for a character that is of no real significance in the big picture?
The way to make the Rachel Dawes character significant however, is to have her be killed or hurt seriously at the hands of the Joker.

But then he decides that it would be better if Joker goes to Arkham.
And then Joker comes back in third film.

I could very well see Joker coming back for that sord of thing. But in my opinion if they don't end up going with it, I see him making an appearence again for being responsible for throwing the acid into Harvey's face as Goyer once mentioned. After is when he wants his revenge as Two-Face, and the two face off.

Come on, n00b. Pamela Isley isn't even a love interest for Batman.
Actually I wouldn't mind a Batman movie that didn't have a romance in it. I prefer Bruce to have a constant flow of bimbos on his arm at all the big social functions.
AS for Rachel Dawes, she may have been the worst part about "Begins" but in a movie that good, that isn't saying a lot. She was the weakest actor but her character was likeable and she was nice to look at.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Rachel's storyline seems to be pretty well wrapped up at the end of BB. She doesn't need to come back. And it isn't worth re-casting the role.

Katie Holmes career at this point is that of Tom Cruise's something or other. Couch victim? She has been brainwashed by Tom Cruise, not exactly the most articulate person. What a bizarre spectacle for the world to witness. In the meantime, if they must bring back the role of Rachel Dawes (seems unlikely, the wind kind of sweeps her away at the end of BB) then a recast is definitely in order, I could live with that.

I had always liked the idea of Rachael being Joker's victim, making it a personal matter for Bruce to kick his Effin A. Then Selina would be good because Bruce would be in a state of extreme anger while Selina's all flirty. She comes on to him and he tries to ignore it for as long as he can. By the way, Master Bruce, I loved that icon of Bats you had with the Killing Joke Joker flickering in the back. It was awesome.

I don't want the movie to be another "oh, they wrote out the female lead and replaced her" type film. I think a film and or film franchise is much more respectable to have a real continuity in them, especially when Rachel was such a big part of his childhood.
The most desirable outcome would be a death at the hands of the Joker which will please both Katie lovers AND Katie (And Tom) haters. Joker will beat her to death like Robin while exclaiming something like: "The Joker did it with a lead pipe in the Billiard Room!" as one of his sick jokes.

I quote Miss Rawes, "Maybe someday when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see (Bruce) again"... what other explanation do you need... are audiences so dumb that they need an explanation to every little detail in a movie trilogy... producers do this to raise speculation... leave it open for possibilities... now that it looks like Katie won't be back... why go through recasting to further confuse a movie with another unecessary plot distractions that will just eat up valuable screen time... why complicate the Joker/Batman conflict (not that it wouldn't work but if it doesn't...) by Joker killing Rachael... just move on already... I'd much rather see Selina (KATE BECKINSALE GOD DAMMIT) or Talia (Keira Knightley) than the same boring actress Katie Holmes...

Just like in the comics, its not necessary at all. Don't even bring her back. Just write her out and don't even pay for her cameo. It's that simple.

Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever was a lot like that, she was torn between both Batman and Bruce Wayne during most of the entire film. When she was with him as Bruce Wayne, she'd say she was in love with someone else. And then when she didn't know he was secretly Batman, she'd say she met someone who of course was Bruce Wayne. He was happy with the second decision.
