I don't know what everybody's problem is with Hulme or bettany getting the role. The way I see it, there is no way in hell we will be dissapointed if one of these two get's to play Mr.J.

Brody could make for a great joker - or a horrible Joker. I have never seen him play a truly vilianous or hyper character and it is hard to picture him as one, but he is a fantastic actor no matter what.

I just have never seen Hulme act, and his career (or lack of it) concerns me. Christian Bale had several movies he could point to to show his acting chops, so does Bettany - Hulme...not so much.

Brody as an actor is a really good one, but as the Joker......no thank you!

I can see where you get your concern of the lack of Lachy movies, but look at hugh jackmen before he was casted as wolverine, a total unknown and only tv movies to his credit a few films and look how that turned out.

Yep, the only problem I have with Hulme is that I've never seen anything about him before. He could be a great actor and may be the best candidate for the Joker. I'd just pick Bettany if I had to choose one of the two. But you're right, I'm sure that we won't be dissapointed if either one of them was chosen.

You think Hulme lack of movies is a problem, at least he has few. Brandon Routh, now there is man with quite a load on his back. Unknowns must be the thing in WB right now!!!!

Seriously, how can anyone not be for that guy as the Joker? Look at that... simply amazing. Just get it over with and cast the guy already, Nolan! Gangster No. 1 + that manip = all the auditioning the guy would ever need.

As for Hulme, I guess if like, Bettany was somehow unable to take the role due to, i dont know, a sudden outbreak of the Ebola virus or something crazy like that, I guess I could live with Hulme instead. It's really hard to say though, as he has so few good manips (not enough pictures of him without facial hair and smiling) and I've hardly seen him act. But, Nolan obviously likes something about him, so if he gets cast, I'll assume it's for good reason.

Bettany is an incredible actor and his performance in Gangster No.1 was chilling. As far as both acting and looks are concerned, he is my third favourite for the role of The Joker. My first is Christopher Eccleston (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Op6aXXQkg&search=christopher%20eccleston for an example of his manic acting) and second is Lachy Hulme whose work I'm a huge fan of. Given the actors rumoured for the part, I think we can't lose.

I tried to turn that hood into a jacket collar. We know he isn't gonna be wearing a purple suit in the movie so I figured I'd go with what was there. The idea is it's just some weird jacket.

Because at BOF, it was reported that Joker woudn't have his usual threads in this movie... and while that doesn't make it 100% a guarantee, Jett has a pretty good track record. It sounds like Joker will have a somewhat different look. I'm betting it will still be a very unusual and dramatic look, but not the usual one for him.

Mr. Socko
04-13-2006, 09:09 PM
EVERY medium of The Joker ever created has had him wear some kind of purple. It will suck horribly if The Joker is not flamboyant and is dark and wears a black trenchcoat the entire time with black hair and only pale skin. DAMN DAMN DAMN!

Just went to BOF and it looks like they're leading more towards Hulme for the role of Joker.

Keyser Sushi
04-13-2006, 09:10 PM
Well, we've had this discussion a bunch of times before, and here's my official position on it:

When Joker was created in the 40's, the tailcoat and the spats and the pinstriped trousers were certainly a somewhat outdated look, but they were much more common then than as formal attire than they are now. It was sort of establishing Joker as foppish. The other thing is that, while they were purple, this was in a time when a comic book had literally six colors. So we maybe shouldn't attach any more importance to a purple suit than we do Batman wearing blue and grey.

The main thing about Joker's clothes is that they are unusual enough to make him stand out. They don't have to be purple and orange, and they don't have to be formal attire.

Also, the cartoony color scheme just would not fit the Nolan Batverse. Joker's appearance needs to be realistically flamboyant, not cartoony flamboyant. I think as long as he dresses flamboyantly, it doesn't matter what he's wearing.

EDIT: It should be noted that they did not rule out the possibility that he will wear purple in some form.

The Joker will have Green Hair and what not - however the suit does not make the Joker IMO. Look at Alan Ross - his Joker was perfectly creepy sans Purple Suit.

True. But it will seem strange for the Joker to wear a black tux throughout the entire movie and nothing else. I love Alex Ross' Joker tho. Joker must wear some kind of purple in some form or I'll refuse to accept it, thats right. I said it.

I am not saying have him in the same thing all movie, I want their to be change.

I believe The Question had an idea for the Big Fight Scene with the Joker taking place in the Opera House Bruce went to before his parents where killed - I think Joker fighting in a tux at that Opera House would be very nice.

Ronny Shade
04-13-2006, 09:16 PM
I think it is imperative that the Joker wear some kind of showy and expensive clothing.

For one, it identifies him as more of a showman, a clown which is what he is...an evil clown.

Secondly, of all the Bat-rogues, Joker is the one who does it most for image and for attention. As it goes along he becomes less a straightforward criminal than has a thing for Batman. He's an attention whore. Purple suit says that perfectly.

Don't worry about it - they confirmed he'll have white skin, green hair, the works. He probably won't have a perma-smile - meaning he'll be like Joker in TAS, he'll have a full range of expression... including that horrible smile.

But he won't have the purple suit. That's not a big deal, really. It'll be more realistic. You can see this guy with his white face, green hair, and red lips, wearing any range of clothing and still being freaky.

If they want more of a street thug Joker, he can wear a white suit and a purple shirt, open at the collar. I'd kind of like to see that, actually. Hell, Frank Miller's Joker in DKR wore a white suit.

Or he can chinos and a purple french dress shirt, with the ruffled cuffs and chest, again open at the collar.

Remember, Joker was a PIMPIN' dresser in the 40's. He should be one now.

I've said this elsewhere but Bettany is going to be far too high-profile for The Joker once the Da Vinci Code comes around. Seriously, with over 40 million copies of the book sold and the latest controversy making headline news around the world, this thing is going to do Pirates of the Caribbean (possibly Titanic) type business. Bettany is going to be a huge star. Add the small factor of being typecast as an albino man with a penchant for murder and I really think he is going to be out of the picture.

I actually dont like that second manip up above, no offence to whoever did it though. I think some of the facial manipulations are a bit over the top, too cartoony perhaps. I know Joker's supposed to have a really long chin and nose, but what you have to remember is that we're talking about a drawn character, and features on those are always exaggerated. I think Bettany's natural facial features are just fine for a live-action Joker. It's not like he's got a big, round face. It's long and angular enough that I'll have no complaints if they dont use any prosthetics for him at all. And if they do, I hope they keep it to a minimum and keep him looking human.

Likewise. I'd seen him in Master & Commander, and A Knight's Tale, and not only did I not put it together that they were the same guy, but I really couldn't have picked him out of a lineup. The name meant nothing to me the first time I heard it. I had to Google him and then I realized he was the doctor from M&C... it wasn't until a few months ago I realized he was Chaucer in AKT.

What exactly is wrong with it? :(

Red lips, green hair, white face, long nose, long chin? Those are the only choices as thats all he is :(

But I do agree it reminds me of the comic book/cartoon. But the guy who played the Joker did an amazing acting Job. If you haven't seen Patient J then watch it. It's pretty much a version of The Killing Joke with a twist.

The Joker's eyebrows were the worst. Looked like catapillars in Dead End and he looks like a brother of The Penguin.

The acting was bad too, he tried to sound too much like Mark Hamill.

Katsuro
04-18-2006, 05:13 AM
The Patient J Joker's nose is far too unrealistically big for my taste. Yeah, Joker has a long nose, but it has a limit. That thing looks so obviously fake. Something like that would never work in Nolan's films. If they didn't use a prosthetic chin for Bale (he didn't have Batman's square jaw), then they dont need a fake chin or nose for Joker. All of the top contenders for the role look enough like the Joker without prosthetics, none are really needed at all. And if they are used, make it hardly noticeable. I want most people to not even think prosthetics are used.

My GAWD! I will pretend I didn't just hear that. It will suck more then Batman & Robin if they do that, yeah, I said it!!! Without white skin, red lips, and green hair, it is not, I REPEAT NOT, THE JOKER!!! It's just another Hannibal type killer. Those are the things that define the Joker. Next you won't want Batman to wear a bat-suit. And while we're at it, Scarecrow should have never worn that potato sack at all. Him in the business suit was much more menacing.

I've lost all hope for you people.:down

My hope has less to do with Nolan's vision and more to do with the fact that psychotic people who actually look normal and can blend in are far more terrifying than a clown on X.

This IS Batman and his universe you fool, not the real world. You'd never see anyone dressed as a bat fighting crime either. If it's in the comics and can't fit into the movies because of "realism" then Nolan is doing it entirely wrong, because if it's in the comics then it is apart of the BATMAN UNIVERSE. The movies should not be limited to such stupid ****. And if Nolan doesn't have Joker look like he should because of Realism then it's obvious that he's stuck in a realistic sense because he's not creative enough to think of anything better.

Mr. Socko
04-18-2006, 03:58 PM

Atleast we still have a few good posters here who know what they are talking about. This realism thing is being taken too far. For all we know, when Nolan said that he could have meant "no superpowered villians" Joker MUST have white skin, red lips, and green hair(yeah dark green hair would be better). Or else I will not except this movie and everyone who knows anything about Batman will disown Nolan and the crap if they do that.

As I said in a previous post, White skin, red lips, and green hair IS The Joker. He atleast needs those qualities. Nose and chin are not absolutely needed like for Nicholson. I really don't think Nolan would be stupid enough to take away all of Joker's physical and facial features despite not wanting Crane to wear a mask. But hopefully his brother knows about Batman and is a good writer. Thank God some of you people aren't working on this movie.

I agree that Joker has should definately have the white skin, green hair, and red lips. There was speculation going around that Joker might just have white skin and actually use make-up to give himself the really red lips, and I don't mind that too much either, as long as he has them. The look of the Joker is a very important aspect of the character, it isn't just there to create a cool visual, and I am sure Nolan and Co. know this and will incorporate it into the next film.

No kidding. Morg will delete a thread about the latest Joker news in this forum because someone already started a thread about great NFL quarterbacks of the 1940's in The Spirit forum. Yet somehow this thread lives on.

And even if it wasn't deleted, for whatever reason, it should be in TDK Non-Spoilers.

I still would have prefered Bettanny him and ledger are in A Knights Tale and betanny acts ledger of the screen the cocky intelligent character bettany plays mixed with a little ganster number 1 would have been AWESOME with Nolans script in TDK.

He 'd have played a truly insane Joker:heart: Although I have complete faith in Ledger !

Bettany has a natural cockiness that would have been awesome as joker. Would you have wanted him to keep his english accent???.

MiniBond

Probably not ! Nut he can fake accents very well, like he did in the Da Vinci Code !

It wasn't English so much as he was just into saying words with great enunciation.

I love enunciation. It's my favor part of English because few know how to do it. What's the written equivalent to Enunciation, Grammar? I love that too, it make's me feel smarter when I use it!

Ahh the good old days.
I am so glad that neither Bettany or Hulme got the gig. Hulme especially. I regret ever backing him, he is not much good. I just wanted an Australian in the movie. Still got one, and he is sensational (so far, and no doubt will be).

Bettany would have been an amazing joker....but the Joker I imagined him to be is nothing like the one Ledger is playing.

Bettany would have owned a Dark Knight Returns style Joker.
