Lol, if we keep this up it'll begin to become a running gag to just bombard the guy with evidence of lenses... If I posted all the evidence to the fact that Batman wears lenses I'd soon have as many posts as CConn.

Armour is good. As long as it is not heavy and akward but the movie magc will make it look good.

They didn't look anything like armor. Except maybe the Returns suit. The '89 suit looked like a rubber muscle suit. As did all the ones after UNTIL Begins.

Ehh... not quite.
As you can see here, the 89 suit was actually not even all rubber. The torso is a harder plastic... thing. The Returns suit was much more like the rest including Begins.

^^^^^^^^That's still pretty nice musculature - always preferred that than the BR slats.
I still get kick out of the '89 suit despite all of it's flaws.
It is fairly accurate as opposed to the Forever musculature which is more stylized.

They appear like magics. :o
My gripes with the 89 suit are as follows: the nasty leather cape, the super useless belt, and the Nikes.
When I first saw Batman 89 and Batman pulled out that double-sided grapple gun to rescue Vikki Vale, I thought: "How the heck did that thing fit into those little capsules on his utility belt?" But it didn't matter, because he's the goddamn Batman.
I still think the chest plate looks really cool.

A lot of people were under the impression they appeared from nowhere, I was as well, before I looked it up.
One feature added to the utility belt in the two Tim Burton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Burton) directed Batman films, Batman (1989 film) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_%281989_film%29) and Batman Returns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Returns), was a small motor which would move items from the back of the belt around to the front allowing Batman easier access to his weaponry and tools. The feature was seen briefly when Batman and Vicki Vale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicki_Vale) were escaping the Joker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_%28comics%29)'s henchmen in the alley and when he rescued Selina Kyle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selina_Kyle) from the Penguin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_%28comics%29)'s clown henchmen at the beginning of Batman Returns.
The grapple gun and all were stored behind his cape on the utility belt, they built a small motor that would run the gun from the back to the front. In Batman '89, at a certain scene, if you put the movie in slow motion or freeze-frame, you can actually see the black motor move the gun to his front side for a split second.
As for the double-sided grapple gun that he used in the museum, no explanation for that one at all...

Yeah, I kind of thought that. The regular grapple gun seemed small, so I thought it just clipped onto the side of his belt or something.
But when I saw the dual-grapple, I was like: "Yeah. . . NO."

Wow flashback :yay: I remember thinking that when I was a kid. My question was how did it know to to move them to the front? Did he have to reach down to push the button? If so does it not defeat the point? I had a lot of free time in math class for these deep thoughts :word:

that batsuit would be a lot better if you used a different helmet/mask.
More along the lines of the DD one. could you imagine the headroom you'd need to get into the batmobile with those huge ears? I've always thought a leather jumpsuit would work. maybe with the black begins symbol outlined in yellow instead of the beyond symbol and the smaller more DD type helm and that suit would be a winner. Still bats not having a cape would be a little weird. maybe have one that pops in and out of the back of the suit when he needs it? he retracts it when he's fighting?

I think the size of the DD one would give less protection. Like a UK police officer helmet they are tall as they have a crumple factor to be resistent to attacks.

I have a question. Why didn't you request for the eyes to be white?
I just didnt think that white lenses would look "realistic" (it worked for spidey cause he had a spandex costume). I wanted the red lenses to keep in tone with the colors of the costume and look more scarier.
I want to redesign the cowl for more of a cooling factor and more streamlined (like a helmet).

Yeah, now THAT would have been good. The new suit has too much clutter. Its like, in a way, the BF suit. It was great, but the chest was too toned. It went too far. B89 and this picture gets it right.

I agree conceptually with this, but the armour under the suit would have to be a different shape. You couldn't put fabric over the TDK suit and have it look good. It'd definitely have to be a bit sleeker and more organic, and specifically designed to look good under a suit.
And while the cowl's definitely better now, it could still be improved a lot, shape-wise, IMO. The new cowl still doesn't capture half of what I love about the way Batman looks.

on another note, with all this lense talk, has nobody noticed that in every pic we've seen of the new cowl, we can't see Bale's eyes at all? i like this look mush more than the lensed look, it looks like soulless emptiness looking back at you.
Ironic...
The usual negative complaint towards Batman wearing lenses always contains; "It wouldn't work because you can't see Bale's powerful, emotional eyes." While the irony is, as you've pointed out, in dark lighting...you still can't Bale's eyes.

Someone suggested Daredevil for an idea for the lenses but after seeing that movie on FX, ya after that... I'm pretty against it
Mr. Socko
09-07-2007, 02:59 PM
Yeah, what better way to base an assumption of something that could work on Batman by comparing it to a Daredevil film in which he wears very big red lenses and a red leather suit. Really smart.
In fact, Daredevil also contained a female who dresses up as a heroine/villainous and knows acrobatics. It wasn't handled very well, so basing my assumption off of that film, I think Selina Kyle/Catwoman should never be introduced in another film, especially in Nolan's world. So after seeing Daredevil, I also think I'm pretty much against Catwoman in Batman.
See how that works?
CaptainClown
09-07-2007, 03:05 PM
Well I'm saying is not that the idea just how it appears on screen. Its a cosmetic detail vs a whole story arc. The only thing going for Affleck is his mouth... to show emotion.. and when he would take off his mask. (which is something I don't like)

I've got no problem with people against the lenses and not wanting them, but looking to Daredevil doesn't help support either side of the debate.

I'm saying it isn't that big a deal if he has lenses or not vs. not adding a character to a whole series. I created an inductive argument just stating Daredevil as an example of a film that used lenses in the manner described for Batman. I mean there really isn't much to go on when its just about looks.

Here is what I have gathered about the new suit:
Batman changes the new suit somewhere around, or before, the middle of the movie. It is not, as Bale has stated, an unjustified change. Somehow, the Joker destroys the old suit (from what I hear, he throws acid on it). Batman then finds himself in water, but starts to sink/drown because of the open/damaged holes the Joker made to the (old) suit. In order to save himself, Batman discards his old suit in the river.

In BB We only saw them ordering in consignments of cowls.
It never said anything about spare suits as bar as I can remember:-
Alfred: [referring to ordering the separate cowl pieces from Asia] "Of course, they'll have to be large orders to avoid suspicion.
Bruce: How Large?
Alfred: Say 10,000.
Bruce: Well, at least we'll have spares..."
then later:-
[Alfred smashes a prototype cowl with a baseball bat]
Alfred: "There's a problem with the graphite, sir. The next 10,000 will be up to specifications.
Bruce: Well, at least they gave us a discount.
Alfred: Quite so, sir. In the meantime, may I suggest you try to avoid landing on your head?"

With the material and decision to go matte-black, maybe. But previous batsuits were much darker, the 89 suit for example.
Plus you can alter any color during the post-production process. So to suggest it was completely out-of-their-hands to make the suit darker, if they wanted, is false.
That's as black as they can get the neoprene. One reason why it sucks.

don't you people understand?! the suit he wore was the BLACKEST IT COULD BE! the costume department for BB said this! there's no way to make the suit any more black...
It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black

You could make it blacker, it just wouldn't show up well on screen and would like S &M gear
No... I'm pretty sure a member of the crew said it couldn't be any blacker during the behind the scenes.

There's nothing wrong with the matte black BB suit. For god's sake people someone who's Ninja trained isn't going to wear a grey suit.

Additionally, it's been established that grey functions well as night camo (obvious to anyone who comprehends that 1) shadows are not black, 2) cities are not black, and 3) grey does not glow in the freaking dark) many times in this very topic. One individual even claimed that, having studied the subject, grey was popular as night camouflage for ninja.

I like the new Batsuit but it fits my goal of the movie. I like the idea of a realistic superhero movie so the style of suit they used is good. There really is no right answer though, I respect where the comic book fans are coming from but being that I never really read the comics myself I can't really relate to wanting a cloth suit :csad:.
I think many people are to concerned over small features of the suit such as the creases when he bends. It's a small imperfection which can't be avoided based on the choice of material. Either way, I doubt it will be noticed when the suit is moving in the film.
Without the use of computers retractable lenses are not possible without looking utterly ridiculous. Where would they retract too without looking out of place? It would have to be about 2 inches out from the eye without bulging over the eye brow and seeming out of place. That's not the best description of what I'm talking about but I hope it is enough for my point to be made.
Also, about shadows. Shadows can range from pitch black to a light gray or can be colored. It's based off the intensity and color of the light being cast on the object. In a city at night the shadows would be almost exclusively black but inside a building that is well lit it could range from black to gray.

Yeah, I agree. The cloth is great looking in comics or in the shows but for a movie it wouldn't look right. I could see a cloth costume working but not for Nolan's style of film. It would need to be more like Batman forever and Batman & Robin where it is very cartoonish. As long as the goal is realism, body armor needs to stay.

Oh, I knew what you ment, I'm just saying it's harder to do than it is to say. For example, Ceasar Ramaro's Joker. I'm sure, in theroy, it worked, but once it translated on screen, his look didn't fare to well.
Batsuits have always been a toucvhy subject. To me, Batman wears all black and armor. Why? It might have something to do with Batman 89 being my first forray into Bativerse, but it seems to makea alittle more since than blue and gray tights. Honestly, who among us would say, "Ya know Lucious, I really do appretiate the armor, what with the bullet stopping and the knife-proof an' all, but I really think I'm gonna take a que from Shakespear and wear tights to go against baddies with swords and automatics."
But that doesn't mean I don't dig the look of the Batsuit...

THAT just screams badass to me. Would I like to see it done? Hell yes I would. Do I think it actually could be done convincingly? Maybe...(That guy from Batman: Dead End nailed the suit part right.) Armor just seems more feasible to me.

criminals wouldn't be as frightened of a guy traipsing around in tights, no matter how muscular he may be. the armor not only protects, but serves the dual purpose of giving people the impression that it will take more than a few punches or bullets to physically overcome him.. i mean, i wouldn't want to get into a fight with someone wearing protective gear like that.

One thing I just thought of. A cloth suit would not match the tumbler at all. Imagine it, you see a huge tank like vehicle rolling up to a crime and out comes a person in a suit like the comics? It seems out of place to me. Cloth suit would also imply a new bat mobile in my opinion.

There's only a handful of things a batsuit can be made out of. Armor, cloth, and chainmail.
Cloth ofers no protection, while any idiot with an arrow can shoot through chainmail. Armor seems the most likely candidate.

I'm talking in the context of real-life, not the movie. I'm more in favor of using the same material used in the Spider-Man suits than I am in the age-old rubber.
As has been mentioned hundreds of times in this thread, liquid armor exists as a military prototype, much in the same way as the glorified "electrical blanket" featured in BB was. Seeing as how no one complained when that was used, I don't see how this case is any different.
Liquid armor applied to thin fabric material (in the context of the movie) provides not only flexibility, but suitable protection.
