Superman Returns: Casting the Man from Krypton
Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh tell it...
April 12, 2006 - Psyched to see Superman Returns? We're right there with you. (In case you need another dose of coolness, the trailer works wonders, so hit it). From the look of things, director Bryan Singer captures the essence of Superman; and it isn't merely John William's music, or Guy Dyas' production design. The key element that says They Did It! They Got Superman! is the man who plays him, Brandon Routh. Just how did Singer find the unknown actor who would be the center of this summer's most anticipated movie?
"The role of Superman, to me, was always to be an unknown," says Singer from the set in Sydney, Australia. The process "was a lot of going through tapes and materials that had been collected previously, along with new material, and combining all those." Amid these videotapes, Singer noticed Routh's audition, and proceeded to set up a meeting, as soon as possible, with the unknown actor.
"It was a Friday," says Routh. "My agent called, and I didn't want to answer the phone because I had a headache. But she kept calling and calling." Finally answering the phone, his agent told him Bryan Singer wanted an immediate meeting. "I was shocked and thinking finally, because I'd done several things in the process and kept thinking it was never gonna happen." Routh asked if Signer could post-pone it for an hour or two due to his headache, but the answer was: "No, he's leaving for Australia to do a scout."
The first meeting was late last year in West Hollywood, "at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Sunset," says Singer. Walking into the coffee shop, Singer admits thinking, he's "going to be the guy or not going to be the guy. I'll know in twenty seconds if it's a 'no go.'"
"I was there early," says Routh. "I think I was reading Atlas Shrugged. He got there, we ordered coffee. He was a little bit nervous and I was a little bit nervous. We just talked for a good hour and a half about the film and so forth."
"It was very funny," says Singer. "I walked in and twenty seconds later I'm thinking, it's still working for me." At the end of the meeting, Singer asked, "Would you mind coming in and reading and doing some more stuff?"
"I was like, Yeah, of course," says Routh. "He went off to Australia. I had a really good feeling from that; a really, really good feeling. He was pretty much sure from that meeting, too. Before I actually got the 'go ahead,' I'd had a lot of time to think about it, to be prepared for it." During this time Routh went through "several stages of, 'Am I gonna get this? Am I really gonna get this? Wow! I think I'm gonna get this! Am I gonna get this?' So, I had a while to become okay with it. To think about it a lot."
Two months later, a representative from Warner Brothers called Routh to officially inform him. "I'm not even sure who it was," says Routh. They said, "Well, congratulations you're, you know... And I said, 'Great! Thank you!' It was more of a big relief to finally have it happen."
Singer says he doesn't know if Routh knew this, but "I knew when I got on the plane."

OMG, what a pu$$y. "Can we postpone an hour or two because I have a headache?"... lol, get out of here with that sissy ****. Seriously, that is ridiculous, lol. I do hard work with headache's, this man wants to postpone meetings for a multi-millionaire jobs because he has a headache. Give me a break... In real life, Brandon Routh would be the "Man of Tissue Paper".

Maybe he's afraid his headache could affect his attitude and put himself in an undesirable light. He doesn't want to blow a very important meeting. It's very rational.

STFU.
He was going for an important first meeting with the Director... He wanted time to compose himself.LOL, seriously... come on, that is a definition of a pu$$y right there. Literally asking the man whom might give you a job as Superman in a movie, for millions of dollars, to postpone for an hour or two b/c he has a headache. LMAO, that is some seriously sissy ****. Who does that? Compose myself my ass, what does he have to compose himself about? He WANTS the job, and the boss WANTS a meeting with him for the job. That means he is interested, lol. It's not like he is then going to an interview for the job, he already went through the interview process (screen test). Imagine if your future employer called and asked you to come in because they wint to hire you, and you said "uhh can you give me and hour or two...I have a headache." BWAHAHAHA, let his baby a$$ take some chewable tylenol, cause I'm sure he doesn't take regular aspirin because it is too difficult. I know people who bust their a$$ at REAL jobs with actual migraine headaches, let alone regular little headaches. Brandon Routh aka The Last Son of Sissy.

Haha, nice. Good job. I can remember many times when I've had horrible headaches and I've not felt like being around anyone. So just because a guy thats human has a headache means he can't feel like a human and still want to meet with Singer for the opportunity for a lifetime? Like someone else said, he wanted time to compose himself so he didn't make a mistake or be off center while talking to Singer.

You're calling a guy who has the balls to postpone a multimillion dollar deal a pussy? For a headache? Without a shadow of a doubt.
You're calling an actor who cares enough abt making a good first impression to the director instead of just putting on a fake smile and doing the movie for the sake of money, a pussy?Of course. He already made the impression, that's why Singer wanted to meet with him. He was crying because of a poor headache.
Look at yourself, 'Whack Arnolds'..with your Batman avatar and some obscure Batman quote that only a fanboy knows as your sig and here you are on an internet messageboard that caters to superhero geeks, complaining about an actor's reaction to a headacheAnd... ? lol. Are you not here as well? Do people here not critisize things that have no real significant meaning? I come here for pure entertainment purposes. And I found it quite amusing, albeit a bit pathetic that a grown man would delay a meeting with a potential boss because of a headache. HAHA. He's a softy.
...I swear to God, we can all feel your machismo eminating from your whiny posts.I'm the one whining? lol. You sure you got that one straight, sparky? What was mashismo about any of that? I know women who bust their ass even when they have "headaches" :( , or even worse, PMS pains. So it had nothing to do with gender at all, or gender roles. I didn't say Routh was a girl, even though he might bat for their team, I just said he was a sissy and a pu$$y. And by pu$$y I mean someone who is extremely soft. And obviously, Routh is that.
You're an internet badass.Uhh, ok. If making fun of someone b/c they can't function during a headache makes me am internet badass, then alrighty then...
Usually an internet badass is someone who acts like a hard ass and challenges people physically over a computer, is it not?
Congratulations. Now try being a REAL one in REAL life, you pissant.LOL, uhhh ok? It's obvious you share from the same affliction as my buddy Brandon Routh here. I take it you're probably just having a really bad day, possibly that time of the month for you? Because you don't know me from atom, or what I am like in 'real life'.

Yay for stupid posts :o . He felt like crap when he was contacted for an immediate interview with an employer for possibly the biggest job of his life. He is an actor, he needed to be on top of things because like singer said the the interview 'I would know if he was the one in the first 20 seconds'.
Kind of hard to make a good impression when your head is pounding and you cant think straight.
This makes him a 'pre-moddana type of person'... Hardly.

I am chill, it just comes across as extremely funny that this guy would need and hour or two for a headache, and would actually delay a meeting with his employer. I'm not pissed, it's just funny. He's a weak kind of guy, and that's fine. I mean if he had a migraine, he would of said it. There is a good difference between a mirgraine and a normal headache. Yet still people can function with migraines. It's not like he was going to be doing anything extensive or mentally or phsyically exaushting with it. Get over yourself, take an aspirin and go meet the man. This doesn't make me not like Routh, but its obvious he is a pre-moddana type of person. The Last Son of Sissy aka Brandon Routh, lol.
Superman: "Uhh Lex, can you wait an hour or two before launching that nuke?...I have a headache."

SUPERHEROES ON PARADE: Fighters for truth, justice and the rights of Mutant-Americans are back, led by "X-Men: The Last Stand," the third installment in the franchise about the gang of super freaks, and "Superman Returns," with the Man of Steel suiting up for his first big-screen adventure in almost 20 years.
Bryan Singer (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1800020313), who made the first two "X-Men (http://search.movies.yahoo.com/search/movies/title?p=%22X-Men%22&string=%22X-Men%22&search=title)" movies, directed "Superman Returns," which introduces Brandon Routh as Krypton's favorite flyboy.
Co-starring Kevin Spacey (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1800018626) as villain Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1803242658) as Lois Lane, the movie has Superman back on Earth after a prolonged absence. Though not a sequel to the Christopher Reeve (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1800027829) "Superman" flicks, the film borrows from the look and mythology created in that series.
Routh said he fashioned his performance to match, injecting his own personality into the character while trying to stay true to Reeve's Superman.
"Chris did such an amazing job. You can change things, but if you do it could be horrible," Routh said. "When somebody does something so great, there's certain things you can tweak, but to change it just to change it sometimes is dangerous."

Come on Showtime, I thought you were more literate than that. Brandon is a puss for attempting to postpone the meeting due to a headache, not just for having one.
Some of you think it isn't a cowardly thing to do, while others do. It's all just people's opinions, there is no right or wrong. It's just Whack Arnolds expressing himself, you know just like when you or any of your "GAMers" go on and on ad infinitum about how great this still looks or that, how fantastic BR is and how perfect he is for the role.
Just because Whacked, ReperterKent, myself or any career woman with PMS thinks superlad is a wimp for succumbing to his headache, doesn't mean he is a wimp, anymore than this being a "good" picture...
http://www.kal-el.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_SupermanReturnsGotMilk_IVAN%7E0.jpg
simply because a select group of internet fans are so eager to see a new Superman movie that they are willing to overlook fat asses, scrawny arms, and the foam padding necessary to bridge the gap in between.
Whacked, I would be all for BR myself, if he was built like a superhero, and if he actually looked like Superman, but as we can clearly see from the milk add, that just isn't the case.

I mean, some people can see Superman in people, while others think differently. Like Dean Cain for example, I mean, some people have him listed as the definitive Superman, while I think it's a load of tosh. Jesus, I've turned posh.
Opinions are only as valid as the facts they are based upon.
GR was the definitive Superman of his era because he captured the essence of patriarch that is Superman. He's not Jesus, BTW, he's your Dad. Don't let the christians fool you, they try to take credit for everything, like christmas and easter, both peagan holidays origionally, celebrating winter and spring solstice respectively. That and it was a pioneering new show on TV in its infancy.
CR was the definitive Superman of his era because of his uncanny resemblance, and his exceptional performance in the dual role of Superman/CK. He convinced us a man could fly while acting in his flying rig, and Donner, and crew pioneered new flying effects that were so remarkable in '78 that they created a new Oscar catagory to honour them.
Dean Cain was the definitive Superman of his era because...he was the star of the show on TV? Was it because he wore the costume and the WB said he was Superman? Was it because it was what was on TV at the time?
See where I'm going with this line of thought? Although opinions are not entirely right or wrong, they are certainly not equal. Some have more merit than others.

If it's GAM that bothers you then that's fine and if you want to come at me because you think I am some kind of leader thats fine too. I don't see any "GAM MEMBERS" jumping to my defense? Where are they? Where are these posters you are calling comformists?
If you think back for a moment, and stop trying to only look at my posts that half-heartedly back your argument, you will remember we have discussed the movie before.
If you can remember, we discussed the following:
1) I agreed on your origin theory, or re-origin, and alot of it was being
rehashed.
2) I was aggrevated with aspects of the suit; belt, no logo on cape...
3) I emphasized that I didn't like some of the choices that were being

Now you are arguing with me about differing views on what should one do when faced with a headache? Come on man.

skruloos, you must really let me have a go at your alternate reality time machine. Seems like a lot more fun than reality, I guess that's why you spend so much time there.
Don't be absurd. You don't need a machine to understand that people have differing opinions about things. There are things that different people simply will not accept changes for. If Singer had done a complete reboot, there'd be people complaining that it was trying to be "better" than the Reeve's films by redoing the origin. If Singer had chosen to not use the Williams' theme at all, people would have complained that such a distinct tune was not used. The same thing happened when it was announced that Nolan wouldn't use Elfman's Batman theme. There WERE people who didn't accept Reeve's Superman because he didn't act like George Reeves' Superman and they complained about it.
You simply can't function under the assumption that everyone would accept an entirely new characterization by Routh universally. There will always be complainers.

Yay, you are eager to hire people who buckle under some personal discomfort. I bet your accountant is exstatic about that.
My wifey thinks Routh is a wimp after reading this article. She also thinks Routh looks ok, as Superboy. She doean't see a Man. Is she entitled to her opinion, or does she just like to complain?
Ya he went to the interview, after his agent told him to cowboy the **** up and go.

For Singer only or in the total Ratner/Mcg/Singer 3 year span?
Thanks for trying to help me switch the subject around. I've posted 3 or 4 things to try to get this topic away from the arguments, but anyways...
I guess in total. Singer/Ratner/McG I know they tried for Brendan Frasier, Josh Hartnett, and theres a few others I can't really remember right now, but who were some of the main, sort of unknowns that actually got to go in a read a few lines of the script.

You're welcome. As far as I remember these auditioned:
Brendan Fraser, Josh Hartnett, Paul Walker, Matthew Bomer, Victor Webster, Ashton Kutcher, Henry Cavill, Jason Behr, Brandon Routh (Brandon and Cavill were the only ones to get a second audition), Jake Gyllenhaal, Jared Padalecki and Mike Vogel. Hayden Christensen was scheduled to audition but dropped.
I'm sure there are many more though.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Kutcher and I didn't even know about Hayden Christensen being up for the role. And yeah, there probably were tons more that tried out. I remember being pretty shocked about Kutcher going for it, nothing against him, but I didn't picture him as Superman in anyway.

...You simply can't function under the assumption that everyone would accept an entirely new characterization by Routh universally. There will always be complainers.
Thats not the point, big surprise you missed it. Yes, you can't please all of the people all of the time,(see how easy I simplify the words you fail to conyey? silly skruloos, one day you'll learn simplification, not complication is the way.)
What you so pathetically attempt to infer, with your comment People just like to complain. is that all complaints (about BR as Superman) are invalid. Nice tactic, especially the part where you support your theory with your (patent-pending) alternate-verse omniscientonicron, telling us what would have happened because you just know it to be true. Too bad I'm not 15 years old, or it might have worked.
Man I've been gone all these months and I can still make you look stupid. Nice to see somethings havent changed.
There WERE people who didn't accept Reeve's Superman because he didn't act like George Reeves' Superman and they complained about it.
Prove it. Link some proof that there was any discernable division between fans over CR's portralyal of Superman in '78.

Call me crazy, but given the case I don't think he would've been bad at all in the role. The guy at least has the height to pull it off. Some of the others were also good choices, especially Bomer and Cavill.

No. I was merely using an example of a flipside and using a universal truth. People will complain. A lot of times, people like to complain simply because they like to vent.

Like what? Personal recollections of people who prefer George Reeves' character over Reeve? I supposse you could ask Robocop. He's quite open about his preference.
Or can you provide proof that Reeve won every George Reeves fan over and prefer his Superman to GR's? Are you really implying that 100% of audience members were accepting of Reeve? That's a bit hard to swallow.

Do I really need to link the definition of discernable to you? I would think that my request for proof also outlined my position on the % of fans fans who were pleased with CR, seeing as how I earlier acknowledged the old addage, you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't all of the people all of the time.

Who cares if Routh had a headache or not? That wasn't even remotely close tot he point of the article. The relevance involves the fact that Singer knew Routh was Superman almost on the spot.

I dismiss the rest of your PMS fest because it's silly personal crap that I have nor want any part of, but the above quote is just plain silly and unjustified.
You certainly do not know that the film is a "mediocre rehash" since it isn't even made yet, unless your angry, trollish grasp of the world magically extends to the future.
It's funny how you're calling out the 'lovers' for their blind acceptance when you yourself are exhibiting the common characterisitcs of the 'haters', which is to unrelentingly hate and criticize when you aren't even in possession of the complete facts about the very thing you're hating.

Here ya go oooxxx\\\\\SolidSnakeMGS/////xxxooo, drag your fingers along the words if it helps.
People that liked Routh right off the bat, because he was lean, graceful like a swimmer have a valid opinion because there's a reason why they have their opinion. People that dislike Routh's appearance, because Superman is a pugilist and strongman, have a valid opinion because it has a reason behind it.
People that like Routh because he's the lead in the new movie from WB, or the people who didn't like Routh, but have learned to assimilate to what is inevitable don't have valid opinions. They are just doing as they are told. The only way they can feel remorseless about their assimilation, is by silencing dissention. It's quite a nasty bit of sociology, isn't it?
Which brings us to you and your compusion to silence me, when it would be so much easer to just ignore me and let my posts fade away. But you can't have that can you? You feel the need to confront, and dismiss my comments.

See, now here's the move you are faced with, Metropolis Man: He's set a nice little trap there. You can engage him on this, and try to directly answer his question, thus admitting guilt and putting yourself on a level comparable to his, thus debasing yourself and deflating your opinion. You can pretend to ignore him, as he does me, and hope he goes away. Or you can actually hold to your initial assertion and continue hammering at that point, as even he is inable to defend his action. Note that his response was to say "BUT YOU DID IT TOO, HA HAHAHA I TRAPPED YOU" and not "I didn't do that."
He's not denying he's an asshead about this, he's reveling in it. You can try to wrestle with him on it, you can ignore, or you can maintain your stance.

oooh. poorly played, Met Man. You sorta ruined whatever pleasure he could take in the "victory" over you by committing messageboard hara-kiri (I'm stupid and I suck, haha) but he's still gonna go for the stab. Sorta like a starving vampire: They don't LIKE eating rats and pigs, but they'll take em. Zombies will still eat a suicide if it's fresh enough. You essentially agreed with his characterization of you, regardless of whether it's true or not. That's a key part to his style--he creates a personality for you out of thin air (usually his own projections) and tries to trick you into accepting it. Like, for example, at the top of this page, where HE calls ME his "stalker," even though he PM's me, he quotes my lines in his sig and he is so threatened by my appearance in the thread he immediately and ham-handedly goes back into the old schtick he ran on me poorly the FIRST time we tangled. Whats' funny is that I was actually giving him props, he just reacted poorly to it and here you go.
It's a clinic here, people. Take notes.

well, I can say that self-deprecation isn't going to work with this dude, so constantly cutting yourself off at the knees isn't going to help. Dude's happy with carrion, he doesn't need a fresh kill. It's all meat to him.
If you've got your opinion, you think it's solid and you can articulate your backup coherently, I'd just stick to that and point out the subtle jabs and personal undermining he tries to sneak in whenever you can. Keep the playing field even. He does have an interesting perspective, but he likes flipping you over on your back and digging for fresh meat if he can. The opinion is a means to doing that, is all. It's almost secondary. The discussion exists to establish online e-dominance over others, with him. It's why fights constantly erupt around him.
If you can appeal to his sense of elitism, you've got him. Then you two can talk, and the ideas exchanged end up being pretty interesting, differing opinion or no. :)

I have to say I agree with these points completely, 125%.
Opinions are formed by comparing a new stimulus to your previous experience and bias and formulating a judgement. The previous experience and bias does not necessarily have to be connected directly to the new stimulus. For instance, some people may like Routh's look because his appearance reminds them of a father or other role model they admire. This opinion would not be based on their prior experience or knowledge of Superman, but it would be a valid opinion. Others may have a preference for body type displayed by Routh, as not being comically over-muscled or what have you.
Still others may form their opinion based on a strict representation of their favorite version of Superman in the comics, television, or film, or any combination thereof, overriding any other experience or bias. This is also a valid opinion.
Conformity is not an opinion. It is a psychological act of acceptance for its own sake, and some of the many reasons for conformity are to either placate external egos or satisfy a lack of ego in the conformist. While conformity cannot be qualified as "good" or "bad" (patriotism is an act of conformity, and can go either way), it is not the formulation of an opinion.

Umm you are not talking about opinions here nice try, trying to spin it that way though to bad you are just plain wrong....
Opinion are not based on anything nor do they have to be and you trying to say that some have more merit is BS you are talking facts vs opinions and they are not even in the same ballpark.
See Dean Cain was never really Superman in my opinion and you trying to shove facts into my opinion LMAO; Yeh nice try with that just because he was on a TV show for several years playing Superman my opinion must just be wrong huh....
Oh wait now I get it you are saying this so you can add credit to your opinions right because your OPINIONS have merit right....while those who disagree with you do not right.

Opinions do not need to be based on facts. They do have to based on something. There is a difference between opinion and conformity. One is a judgement, the other is lack of judgement.

And exactly why does an opinion have to be based off anything? alot of people base opinions off feelings, there personal likes or dislikes etc etc etc.... unless you are agreeing with me you lost me here.

 Explain to me how "feelings, personal likes and dislikes" are nothing. They are something. They are also previous opinions formulated prior to the current opinion. So now we have opinions based on opinions. Valid. All opinions arise from some external stimulus. An opinion is simply our reaction to this stimulus based on our previous experience and bias. This can include our knowledge of factual information or not.
For instance: Saying, "I like what I've seen so far of SR" is an opinion. It is a reaction to an outside stimulus based on your own personality.
Saying, "I know SR is going to be the best movie EVAR!" is not an opinion. There is no stimulus (the film) on which to form a judgement. That statement is a belief, not an opinion.
See above the second post you quoted me on and my opinion on Dean Cain as Superman its based merely off my feelings on the show its not conformity or a lack of judgement.
You misunderstand me when I say conformity is a lack of judgement. I am not qualifying it as "good" or "bad". I am saying that true conformity means ignoring your personal bias and adopting the bias of an external source. In other words, you give up the ability to judge, and follow the judgement of the entity to which you are conforming.

Although opinions are not entirely right or wrong, they are certainly not equal. Some have more merit than others.
Since opinions are not facts, they cannot be factually "true" or "false". It is impossible for them to be.
Oldguy was making qualitative statements based on his personal viewpoint. The value of an opinion, obviously and necessarily, varies from person to person, as each formulates a judgement of that opinion based on their own personality. Oldguy requires opinions to be based on factual information for them to have any worth to him.
Now, this concept of "merit" is also a qualitative statement, and is from Oldguy's personal perspective. Saying an opinion has "merit" is itself an opinion - about the opinion. So Oldguy was speaking only of his personal viewpoint. Which is different from yours. I don't see what the conflict is.
Neither of which I agree with.

I was not disagreeing with his viewpoint I was disagreeing that opinions have to be based off facts (he posted it why you are trying to spin a defense for it I have no idea)
Or that some have more merit than others those are not opinions, He is talking facts or opinions based on facts hence my not even in the same ballpark statment.
Anyways I am done here this thread just sadly needs to die since its so far off track now its pointless to even try to get it back on track and its more about a debate on what is a valid opinion than the interview.:down

OMFGAM, READ MY ORIGIONAL POST.
See that second paragraph? I'm no longer specifically addressing Showtimes.
But Showtimes didn't think so, he thought I was addressing him specifically.
So he responded...
You're amazing. You've chosen to come at me with your Brandon Routh sucks agenda, you've got the wrong guy.
Which amused me to no end. To think that he would act so defensive, when I wasn't even talking to him, so I accused him of defending Routh, and do you know what, he started to. He could have immediately clarified that he was just joking around, but he didn't. Instead, he started cheerleading people that insulted me.
And the ball started rolling.
A day later and a dollar short, here's Robo with his chest puffed out ready to mediate and evaluate a dead horse. So with self-righteous indignation, you condemn my actions and take my respect away, all the while suspecting you will become my next "target."
Well if you don't want to be my next victim, why the hell do you confront me?
You were at one time an amusing mascot, Robo, but now your just an annoying self appointed mod with a napoleon complex, you god amoung men you.
You and your evaluations are irrelevant to me. Run along now, go moderate your palm some more.

I did miss it until just right now, but it throws away alot of your comments in regards to you "not addressing" me personally and validates alot of my comments in regards to you attacking me directly. I also was a bit off my game.
