View Full Version : It's kinda sad that Pee-Wee's Big Adventure has a better chase scene than B89

Everyone knows I love B89, so this isn't a bash thread. I always liked the chase scene in B89 and even the one in Batman Returns. But some people don't because it isn't very exciting and not much is going on. I think Tim Burton isn't really the one to blame and maybe he was just forced to settle with what he had.

If you watch Pee-Wee's Big Adventure you'll notice that Tim Burton did a really good job with the chase scene at the WB studio. Even though that scene was made for laughs it was still pretty good.

So, I think Burton can handle a good chase if he wanted to. What do you guys think?

Pee Wee's Big Adventure allowed Tim Burton the time and freedom to do a long chase scene. Pee Wee is basically a road movie all about Pee Wee and his missing bike. In the Batman movies he had more to fit into two hours. Pressure from Warner Brothers to have a certain amount of action scenes, alot more going on and he wanted to fit more into the batman movies that didn't allow a long chase scene.

I love Burton's films as well, but most of his action to me was pretty stale. I think his films were better with dynamic, static shots.

When your set is heavily confined, you see how good a chase scene you could make...! Pee-wee's Big Adventure takes place in the real world, so they could shoot in a real location, not someplace that was fabricated.

I mean it was a real area someplace, it wasn't shot on the real WB lot, but another studio that is always used in films to be studio lots, but still, it was a real location with plenty of space. It wasn't someplace like Gotham City, which was 100% fake.

I mean that the Gothams that were created were nowhere near as big as an actual location, you smartass. Thus, they were too restrictive to make a really dynamic chase.

Even so, they did.

Not really. To me it felt like a go-cart being let loose in a Costco.

I've never seen Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Yeah, okay, I admit it.

And the B89 car chase rocked.

I'm not saying I didn't like the chases, and I'm not saying that they weren't good. I was just making obvious the point that with more space, the chases could have been better. It would be nice if you didn't jump to conclusions and assume things.

I agree with what you're saying. Pee-Wee had a lot of space that B89 didn't. Although Burton did shoot some stuff on location. Like Wayne Manor and the scene in which Batman is taking Vicki to the batcave. Maybe they could have figured out a way to shoot that scene in the real streets.

The problem is, the cars are going too damn slow.

Now, people have said, that's because Gotham is full of pedestrians.

LOL. Gotham is PART of the movie, the PESTRIANS are part of the movie. If it suits the movie better, get the pedestrians off the streets, as all the other Batman movies do, or have a chase scene where the are no pedestrians.

Burton explained on the DVD commentary that if the cars would have gone 100mph they would have been off the lot in seconds. Thats why they filmed that scene of Batman taking Vicki to the batcave at an outdoor location. So, they could show the speed of the vehicle.

Lol great idea!

Anyone remember the Large Marge scene in Pee Wee's Big Adv? That was my favorite part

Well there's a poor taste joke about one flying he actually did. But for respect to him i won't say it.

Twisted Sister had a cameo on Pee Wee's Big Adventure, that's what was missing from B89.

I went to the Superman board about a week ago and this guy said "Chris Reeve sucked". He was nearly flamed all the way to hell and back.

B89 had Prince. So I say they were pretty equal.

Burton explained on the DVD commentary that if the cars would have gone 100mph they would have been off the lot in seconds.

But that's still a fault of the movie, if they build sets that don't allow for a proper car chase.

I remember seeing Returns in theaters, I wasn't sure at first if the Peguin's father was Pee Wee Herman or not until he stated it in an interview not to long after.

Batman is not a great action movie by any stretch of the imagination, it's a great movie with action (action that is decent).

With the Batmobile chase, I think at the time the audience is so amazed at how cool the Batmobile itself is, they're not actually thinking about the chase.
