Converting WMV and AVI to MOV

I was wondering if anyone knew how to convert a WMV/AVI file to a MOV file (basically, I want something that only plays on Windows Media to play on Quicktime.) I have Quicktime Pro, and my friend told me a process. He said I had to open the file in Windows Media, then open Quicktime, go to File--> Export. Select the file, and then export it. I tried that and I didn't work. Does anyone know how to do this?

I believe there is a certain kind of software you need to do it, but I maybe wrong.

I've always used the option of clicking on the file and choosing the vid player that I've wanted to use to operate with.
