Hey guys. I was glancing at the back of my The Long Halloween Graphic Novel and noticed Batman: Haunted Knight. I never heard of that one before and got a two questions:
- Is it good? Loeb and Sale again...so sounds like it would be.
- Is it in continuity?

Yeah, the continuity on Haunted Knight is hard to tell. It seems like each story takes place on Halloween night, and they all seem like different Halloweens. But they all seem like early stories, that take place within the first few years. And then there are the two halloweens in TLH, so it's confusing. Basically, we know of 6 Halloweens that take place all before Robin is introduced. The beggining of TLH, the end of TLH, one in Dark Victory, and 3 in Haunted Knight. 6 Halloweens that seem to take place in barely over 3 years.

It's a very good read. Don't read it for the continuity, read it for the great stories inside.
It's ok. Nowhere near as good as Loeb's TLH or DV. I don't think it's in continuity.

I recently got it, but haven't read it yet. Gordon's son is still a baby, his wife is still around and Barbara has recently been adopted, and he's also still a captain, if that helps.
Two of the stories are credited to Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens.

I think the stories are pretty good. They're not as great as TLH or DV, though. As for the continuity thing I think they are meant to fit in around Year 1, TLH and DV. Just because there are things that happened in TLH and DV on a Halloween doesn't mean that this story couldn't have happened too.
The Scarecrow story is worth the buy alone.

Quality read. The TPB is real collectible-worthy. Fun stories, and good reades around October:) In fact, you could even dish one out around Christmas time! And Sale illustrates one of my all-time favorite pics of Batman...can't remember which page.

One part I really liked about Haunted Knight was the line that was later used in Batman Begins. "Dr. Crane isn't here right now, but if you'd like to make an appointment..." I was so surprised when I read that, I had no idea that Begins took it from there. Such a great line.

Thanks guys. You all replied as I was hoping you would. Because the fact that it is another Loeb/Sale made it seem worth buying. Continuity did not matter to me all that much in determining to buy it..was just curious. Thanks; hopefully I'll be able to buy it somewhere...guess will have to order online? lol.

Well I searched on eBay and did one of those "Buy It Now" kind of things. I bought it from some bookstore...only $13.78 or something like that including S&H.

The Long Halloween directly follows Batman's origin story Year One so that's first. Dark Victory is the sequel to TLH. Haunted Knight has three stories set at Halloween. I haven't read it in a while but I belive they are set in Year 1-3 (might be 2-4) and fits in around TLH and DV. If I remember correctly you can tell by Gordon's rank in atleast one of the stories.
As long as you read TLH before DV it doesn't really matter when you read Haunted Knight.

I know it does not matter when I read Haunted Knight. I only wanted to know if it was in continuity because I never really heard of it before. Plus on this site I recently found it doesn't list it in continuity...the site includes Year Two and Year Three only because they used to be til DC changed that..but everything else seems to be in right order/spots.

The Long Halloween starts atleast a year AFTER Year One ended, probably more like two or three. The Man Who Laughs follows directly after Year One. I'd say Dark Moon Rising takes place before TLH too.

Ya, my brother says that The Long Halloween is basically what replaced Batman: Year Two because DC did not like having the reaper guy whatever his name was to be the main villain for Bat's second year...or something like that...

Even if Haunted Knight is not in continuity...I bet once I recieve my package and read it I could guess where it could fall on in a timeline. Story is mainly about Scarecrow right? I've read the "Sneak Peak" at the DC Comics site and from the "Sneak Peak" (now I may be completely wrong but) seems like Haunted Knight might be Scarecrow's first appearance?

Dark Moon Rising has become Batman and the Monster Men and another story.

Judging by the way Bats talks about Ol' Scarecrow, it's safe to assume he's faced him before. I doubt it's Scarecrow's first appearance.

Either way, I'm definetly looking forward to it. Not that I have read all the Batman storylines but I have read different writers and Jeph Loeb is my favorite and Tim Sale's art goes nicely with his work.

About the continuity issue:
If you read pt. 2 of "Hush", you'll notice he talks about one halloween in flashback where he's mad at his dad and doesn't want to go out trick-or-treating. I was surprised to see that in Haunted Knight. Loeb refrences a lot of his past work in Hush

Haunted Knight is FANTASTIC. Its extremely well written, and is quintessential batman in my opinion. Batman's character shows an incredible amount of depth, and really well done. Fans of Batman's struggle with duality, and expression of his humanity will enjoy haunted Knight. The themes of dedication, isolation, and sacrfice are all done justice. The art is a little "dated" as Tim Sale became more comfortable with his style later on, but it is still one hell of a read. The passage you reffered to about Bruce being upset is :
BRUCE: I'm ready to go!
MARTHA WAYNE: Your costume looks great.
BRUCE: Thanks. I made it myself. Alfred kind of helped...is dad home yet?
MARTHA WAYNE:Bruce...Your father called and...
BRUCE: Don't tell me...he's gotta work late...! Its not fair...He promised he would take me trick o' treating...He promised
MARTHA WAYNE: I know, but there was an emergency
BRUCE: Theres always some emergency!
I want to discuss this scene more, but I'll wait until people have read the comic. Its great. I hope I haven't over-hyped it.

After re-reading it and such I have come to this conclusion about this book:
- The first story with Scarecrow is good.
- The second story with Mad Hatter is ok.
- The last story called Ghosts is just kind if dumb and a bit wierd...but ok when you look at the story overall.

TLH is probably my favorite Batman story ever.....although I love HUSH, and YEAR ONE.
I'm about to start reading DV........but I'm contemplating re-reading TLH, since it's been a while.

Re-reading TLH to refresh your memory is a good idea but not needed. The first like two-pages of Dark Victory sort of mention what happened in TLH in a few lines but it's cool what you choose to do.
I loved Hush too...but I don't know about Year One...I think that is highly overrated and I did not like it as much as I thought I would. I expected more of it I guess.

Haha. Same thing with me and the War Games saga. I learned more and more about it and then made a thread asking questions about it and now really want to get it. But the bookstore does not have all the acts at the moment. :P

Haunted Knight was good, but i was rather disapointed with the art in this book. It shined in some areas, but in others, it sucked. There's a panel i believe in the Mad Hatter story, where Batman is standing in Leslie Thompkins' office. It's a full page of Batman standing there. his body is really muscular and big....but his head it too small.
There's also the last page of the third story with Bruce greeting the trick or treaters, and he looks more like Mr. Rogers(an old scrawny man), than some extremely fit, rich playboy

At first when I read TLH I thought the same about Sale's work. But I soon began to appreciate it and enjoy it. His art gives a certain mood when reading the story. Now, I really like his art.

Yeah, I just wanted to re-read it and hit up DV. Been a while since I read TLH.

Ya know, I think I just liked how Miller made Batman more into an actual Hero with this one. However, it feels more like a Jim Gordon story....and not a Batman story. That might be my only gripe with it. And, the ending final part was a little anti-climatic for me. The ending owned though.

Yup. Same with me. His art grew on me.

His designs for the villains were much more sadistic which I loved. For his Batman...it was a darker Batman. I loved the picture he drew in TLH when Batman dove onto Maroni's car closing the trunk and just staring at those 2 guys as they stood scared and silent. :)
