A shiny Pokémon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon) is an alternately colored variant of a Pokémon. They can be caught in any Pokémon RPG from Gold and Silver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Gold_and_Silver), though the odds of catching or finding one is 1 in 8192. However, there are some Pokemon with no difference from normal and shiny; some examples include the ?????????? glitch Pokemon in Pokemon Ruby, Saphire, and Emerald. There is one major exception to this--in Pokémon Silver, Gold, and Crystal, there is always one shiny, red Gyarados (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyarados) in the Lake of Rage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_of_Rage).
Since first-generation games do not recognize shiny Pokémon, there is no distinction unless the Pokémon is traded to a later version.
Shiny Pokémon are not necessarily better than regular Pokémon but, in the metal generation games, they have an attack gene at the 70th percentile for their species. In the GBA generation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_%28video_games%29#Game_Boy_Advanced_e ra), however, "shininess" had been given their own value and are effectively the same as any other Pokémon in battle. Most shiny Pokémon are considered to be collectors' items in the games since they are so rare.
In the Ruby, Sapphire, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Ruby_and_Sapphire) and Emerald versions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Emerald) you can still catch a shiny Pokémon, with the same odds. (There are Also shiny pokemon in FireRed and Leafgreen Versions.) Shiny Zigzagoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigzagoon) were given out from GameStop and EB Games in July 2004. In the Trainer Memo section of the Pokémon Summary, a message would read "fateful encounter". Other Pokémon traded to Ruby and Sapphire through Nintendo promotions, such as from Pokémon Colosseum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Colosseum), or its pre-order disk bear this description. Also in FireRed and LeafGreen, shiny Pokémon are frequently encountered in the Trainer Tower (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Trainer_Tower&action=edit), under the control of an opponent.
The term "shiny" is in fact a term used by the pokémon fan community, probably because of the flash of stars appearing as the Pokémon enters a battle, which was used so that one could tell a pokémon was shiny even if playing on a monochrome gameboy.

I caught a gold Caterpie.

All of you should trade from yellow to blue or Red. Me and my friend did it and all hell broke loose. We trades like charmander for Squirttle and got other random even stronger pokemon. It was so insane. :confused::up:

My favorite is Blastoise with a close second being Raichu. Those should be selectable characters in the next smash bros. There are more than a couple of pokemon worth more than simply being one hit moves. Blastoise would make a fantastic addition to the heavy weight fighters.... and Raichu... well, just use him instead of Pichu.

my favorite pokemons were the multi types...

Charizard, Victreebell, Psyduck, Gengar, Golem and Dragonite

thanks to misingno;)

I prefered the straight types myself. Blastoise, Raichu, Arcanine, Zapdos, Vileplume and Mewtwo. Ah. Good times, good times.

by Multi and Straight types i'm assuming that;
Multi = 2 types, example Water/Ground.
Straight = 1 type, example Fire.

if so, then isn't Golem just one type? Rock? and isn't Zapdos two types? electric/flying?

anyway, i love the pokemon games, and can't wait to get the DS versions when they come out, my emerald team is;
Swapert
Salamence
Metagross
Tyranitar
Breloom
Flygon

and my Leaf Green team is;
Jolteon
Charizard
Starmie
Tyranitar
Dragonite
Venasaur

i have a shiny Heracross, who is unbelivabley strong. and the Charizard i have is one too, my friend gave me the Charmander egg for a blastoise egg, and out popped a shiny charmander. Shiney Charizard is Black with red wings.
