It took 7 months, a lot of silence from Square Enix and a ton of infuration, but its finally here.

Some people are reportedly already finding it in select locations. Forbidden Planet in NYC and such. Others have found it at Blockbuster.
So let's try to keep all info. pertaining to Advent Children in this thread from here on out guys.
So far I'm liking what I'm hearing from all the English VA's. I think Kadaj and Cloud sound even better in English. Steven Blum is perfect for Vincent.

Yeah. I'm glad they are finally advertising it. For a while I felt they were missing the boat and the advertising was pretty poor or non-existent.
They have to get the word out and show what the release date is after all the crap we've been through.
But wow, the interviews at the premiere, that IGN lady is pretty annoying.

Dude, PSP is a dead format for movies. DVD all the way.
Movie studios are already halting production on PSP. PSP you don't get any of the extras as the DVD set and it costs about the same. You can only watch the PSP version on a crappy 4 inch screen? Umm no.
DVD.

Anyone here ever watch a show called perfect strangers?
Vincent's character design reminds me of Bowki (sp?) :( that kinda ruined my impression of him.
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for the 25. But I can live for a while longer cuz I have the Japanese version to tide me over :D

Uh, if you mean CGI, I'll agree with you, but just plain animated? I say a Studio Ghibli film probably deserves that honor

Same, I've had it since November subtitled with DVD quality..
Though the subtitles are questionable(as in thats may or may not be exactly what they're saying) due to it being fansubbed.

Yay you're from B-More too. I know the subtitles are questionable, they make it seem more serious in dialogue than it should be, but usually I just watch for the action more than the words. If I know what it's about who need subtitles.

don't trust the hype surrounding that one. It's good but the story isn't great, and I found myself somewhat mad at the end [spoliers]at why the war was being fought[/spoilers]
It's good but don't start watching it expecting it to be as great as some of the other Miyazaki movies.

I found an anime shop that sold the movie a week in advance I was a bit suprised to find it.
I have to say....I had alot of doubt before I watched it but many of the characters were voiced quite well.,
Cloud
Aerith
Reno
Tifa
Kadaj
Marlene
Denzel
All were voiced nicley IMO, some of the others just fell a little short but still it was better than I was expecting.

Ok there's something that neither me or anyone I know can figure out. What's with the wolf? Is it Zack or somn?
TheVileOne
04-23-2006, 09:53 PM
There are some different theories.
Some people see it as a symbol of Cloud's doubt and despair that he can't let go of. As well as Cloud trying to act lonely and being a lone-wolf.
Other people see it as the spirit of Zack still watching over Cloud.

For me.....its not horrible but it's not great either, its merely ok. I do wish they would have taken this more seriously and did a better job....Especially Sephiroth...his english voice did not fit his character
Mena Survei did a slightly better job in Advent Children than she did in KH2. At least Cloud and Kadaj were voiced a lot better than the others.

well... that would be when you are talking about FF:AC in general, not the dubbing. I just feel that the American Dubbing sucks in general. They don't have the right voices, they don't have the right feeling. I rather hear the original voices or maybe a better dubbing.

Whew, I just finished watching it. It blew my socks off! The English dub wasn't that bad, even though there were some odd breaks in the dialogue (which is most likely because it's difficult to sync the english language with japanese lip movement). I thought the voices were good enough though, and the movie itself was sweet. It's not the best movie ever, but certainly worthy of ownership by any FFVII and/or animation fan. It makes me wish that Square would hurry up with that FFVII remake for PS3 that they've been teasing about!
Definately a satasfying movie. 4/5 stars.

I was very optimistic about the English dub, but it's like they didn't really try. As entertainment it's ok, but as art it's not ok. I'm just glad i didn't pay a lot for it.
I started getting confused because some of the conversations were changed to allow better understanding of what was going on.............i just got a little more lost.
oh well.............I actually thought that Sephiroth was the most decent dub.

FYI guys, this seems to be selling out wherever I go. I had to drive extra to a more remote Best Buy in order to buy it and another copy for a friend's birthday present.
You know what this proves? That companies cannot cite downloading as a source of sales going down.
If anything, I think the downloading of AC just made people more excited about it and made them want to own it even more. But Square Enix seemed to lazy to provide it for a while.

The dubbing and the lip sync were not the best, in fact both were average or borderline poor and this was distracting. The dubbing seemed fine for the most part to me.
Some of the lip syncing was not absolutely perfect, more due to the fact that they probably used motion capture on a lot of the faces of the VA's for the dialogue.
Newbern's Sephiroth I think sounded awesome. As did Steven Jay Blum's Vincent.
As for the action scenes Jamon, they did extend them a lot. This whole thing started out as just a short, 20 minute series of vignettes that kept getting bigger and bigger, eventually turning into a feature length movie. So they extended a lot of things. Plus the third act is almost nothing but action.
The Sephiroth/Cloud fight went over like 6 minutes from start to finish.

I think the lipsync was very poor throughout, a lot of it was way out, which was distracting.
I wanted the Cloud/Sephiroth fight to last another few mins, but i gues they never had the budget. Still an enjoyable movie though.

Dang, that's a tough question! Final Fantasy VII is really Square's ultimate IP to re-visit, but I guess maybe FF8 would be the next obvious choice (however, it does not even compare to FF7 in terms of cult-status). Square does have other IPs that could potentially be cool to re-visit as movies, as well. If it weren't for the fact that they already made one with traditional animation, it would have been sweet if they did the Fullmetal Alchemist movie in CG ala Advent Children (my inner geek drools lakes at that idea). There's also Chrono Trigger, however I think that that may work better as a hand-animated movie, so I'm not sure.
And, there's also the obvious possibility that Square could make new IPs specifically for film, or purchase film rights for IPs from thrid parties. Now that they've got a sucsess under their belt, the possibilities are crazy. I think that Square is definately shows lots of potential to transform from a game publisher to a multi-media entertainment company, and FFVII:AC was a great start.

I'm actually one of those people. But surprisingly I could live with the dub in AC. The only one I had a problem with was Sephiroth. He just doesn't sound right.
But I'll stick to the sub. I really missed Reno's Zutto! in the Movie.

Nope, not once. Raziel has 3 fingered claws, Vincent one Gauntlet. Raziel doesn't have a cape, those are his wings that have been ripped to shreds. So the only similarity are the collars, and even those are very different. Raziel's collar is his clan banner wrapped tightly around his face, while Vincent's collar is... well, you see the screenshot.

I bought the movie yesterday and I absolutely loved it. It was great seeing these characters in action after so many years. I thought it had a great story, the action was intense, and I really didn't have a problem with the dubbing. I usually don't care much for dubbing, but it really didn't bug me. And Sephiroth was completely badass. It would of probably bugged me more if I saw the sub. version. But overall, I loved Advent Children. Here's hoping for more CGI films directed towards upper teen and adults.

I think they should make FFVII into a major motion picture. Since this movie will obviously be a success, they should capitalize on it. An adaptation of one of the games onto film was what the fans wanted from the beginning when they announced The Spirits Within. Obviously the most popular is VII, so they should make it! I'd love to see this caliber of action on the big screen.

um, dude? "Realistic" is the LAST word you want to use to describe the physics in this movie.
Finally saw it last night, and I did not care that much for the english voices, I'll be watching it in Japanese from now on. Cloud's was alright, but that was pretty much it for me, everyone else just sounded off in one way or another.
As for the movie itself: yeah, lacking in decent plot (why the hell did they kidnap the kids? anyone?) The wacky physics also took me out of it. This isn't Dragonball Z. I could stand for most of the jumping around, but that scene where Cloud rockets up into the air towards Bahamut and the others all leap after him, and give him a boost? THAT MAKES NO FRIKKIN SENSE!!!!!. There was also zero exposition, most people not familiar with the game won't understand a thing.

I was only commenting on one scene for the physics. When Yazoo was shooting at Cloud in the Forgotten City. That's the one detail I liked most because the animators accounted for the recoil of the gun. I'm not speaking for the physics as a whole.

When Vincent tried to intercede, he was deemed a nuisance, and experimented on, which is why he's able to transform into monsters. I've played through the game twice and watched it a third time. I've read thousands of comics, watch hundreds of movies and polayed dozens of games, and weirdly find it's easier to remember events and trivia from all these things than events from my own life. My fiance always says "remember my friend so and so," or "remember when we went here/did this?", and I never do and she always has to remind me. Yet for some reason I can tell you that Wolverine #50 is the first appearence of Shiva, a series of Robots designed by the Weapon X program to hunt down rogue agents, which included Wolverine, Sabretooth, Maverick, Silver Fox, Mastodon, and John Wraith - from the top of my head even though I haven't read the comics these facts were revealed in in over ten years, and I didn't even like them that much :p

TheVileOne

Not sure it entirely works like that. It seems what the "remnants" were lacking were the Jenova cells.
I dunno, Loz and Yazoo didn't seem like types who could transform into Sephiroth :) .

If they were to make FFVII into a trilogy and did it like AV, it would rival LOTR. Each movie would have to be 3 hours long as well, but it could be amazing.

I probably watched DB and DBZ way before you did. DBZ is great. Watched it first in Spanish in mid 90's, then in English and then in Japanese.
I am a fan of FF series, and FFVI is the best one made. It had a better story and it ruled so many amounts of ass, and the first game of FF I played was FFVIII.
I know my stuff, it's just the fans that have tremendous bad taste.
FFVII will never rival LOTR... EVER!

I know he borrowed from his team mates in the Bahamut fight. But in the forgotten city fight he jumps in the air and manages to stay there for a while before being hit back down onto a tree. And in the Sephiroth fight, he jumped from the bottom of the shinra main building to the top at least once. Those constitute flying to me.

Well, we can't be sure to what extend Rufus was hurt. And what he displayed during the movie wasn't really enough to proof whether or not he would be able to go all day without the wheelchair.
After all, all he did was to show that he could stand up for a couple of seconds and to fall down a building.

Watch the Reminiscence feature on Disc 1. It's a synopsis of the entire FF7 game.
Jenova is a meteorite/organism that came to Midgar thousands of years ago.
The cells were injected by a scientist named Hojo into his pregnant wife, Lucrecia. The baby she gave birth to was Sephiroth.
The Silver Haired Men were remnants of Sephiroth. But for whatever reason they didn't have the Jenova cells to complete them into Sephiroth's.
