Of course it is, too much anticipation.
It is the "Phantom Menace" situation.
Whether it is worth it though, is another thing.
I hope it is.
hardly a spoiler, moving!

That said, Time Warner does own EW.
I see it making more in the 250-275 million US BO range.
I think a lot of people will have overestimated it like Batman Begins.

Hi, I was going through supermanhomepage.com and on the main page they have listed the predictions made by Entertainment Weekly for the 10 highest grossing movies for 2006. The good news for all Superman fans is that they have put SR at the top with $300 million. X-MEN is ranked third at 240 million and POTC 2 at 6th with 200 million. Ironically, in the poll conducted by them it is POTC2 which is heading the chart. Well, I guess that's the way predictions work, if they were the same for all, they won't really be fun, but atleast that's some positive news, based on who you would trust more, the magazine's predictions or the voters.
I hope this thread is worthwhile and would make for some excitement. If it doesn't please close it.

Can't say I agree with EW. I think the top spot will go to either X3 and POTC 2.

hmmmm EW.... Of course they are going to make this kind of predction they are owned by the WB.
Um anyone that think SR comes in at 300 Million while Pirates only get 200 Million...is seriously smoking crack!
I think they also predicited MI3 will be number 2, not to mention they pretty much ignored sure fire hits like cars and Over the Hedge

I think PotC 2 will make the most money at the box office. The first one was so great and more and more have seen it on DVD afterwards and are looking forward to the sequel.
X-Men 3 and MI3 will probably make alot of money too, but I'm not sure if they're gonna take more than Superman Returns. If Singer gets the trailer right and may through june will be plastered with Superman news then it will have a good chance of taking the second place.
Or it will make a decent amount like BB and then come back stronger with the sequel. It's hard to tell if the general public will flock to it like Spider-Man or if they will be cautious like they were with Begins.

In general the winnner at the box office for the summer has a movie that comes out before or on Memorial Day.
4rth of July is big but in general... Memorial day is bigger.

I have a strange feeling that no movie will cross 300M this summer. Probably MI3 just because of Cruise. Because my local newspapers had as a headline today in the entertainment section "Cruise, X-Men and Superman lead Hollywood". Why would they put Cruise and not the movie MI3?

MI3 will not cross $175 million
I expect $58 million/$160 million.
Public is tired of Cruise and his BS stuff.

People put too much bank inot Cruise..... Look at Cruise and Spielberg...last year, talk about yer under achiver in the Box office.... Just an opinion.... but I expected more.
Depp may be more of a one man atraction at this point for Summer box Office power
MI3 may do well.... but I think some underestimate that bad taste left by .. MI2 and J Woo...

I would have to agree, it seems like Cruise doesn't draw the crowds like he used to. I dont know if thats to do with the whole Katie Holmes thing or if people are just not as interested. I think MI 3 will do well, but maybe not the numbers they are looking for. I'll probably go see all of those movies. Except for maybe Cars.

97: july 4th men in black > memorial day lost world
96: july 4th independence day > memorial day mission impossible
but in those case you have to look at the quality of the films too
96 - its freaking independence day, kicked off the disaster films
97 - will smith in the summer
98 - godzilla sucked and people knew it
99 - will smith in the summer 3.0
00 - perfect storm isn't as big as cruise
01 - so much hype around pearl harbor, then it had the massive drop off cuz it sucked (and cuba needed a bigger part ;) )
02 - will smith in the summer 4.0 (see a pattern here :p)
03 - jim carrey + not as much hype on T3 w/out cameron ( i still thought it was good)
04 - by now the independence day team's schtick has worn it's welcome (plus spidey proved to be a juggernaut after the first one)
05 - el spiebergo + cruise > wannabe pixar toons, and even then you forgot that both were CRUSHED by episode III
this is the first summer in a while where you have 2 decent films competing from their respective weekends, not to mention that it'll be a competitive summer to begin with....x3, potc2, cars and especially the davinci code will be wild cards
the EW article is hooey, b/c its owned by the WB anyways

War of the Worlds:
"Paramount debuted one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer, War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise from a screenplay by Josh Friedman and David Koepp. Americans focused their holiday plans around the movie as it set new records; Cruise and Paramount both set new marks for biggest opening day, biggest single day, and biggest opening weekend, and by August, the film had become the biggest hit in Cruise's extraordinary career. To date, the film has taken in $232,606,871."
Final BO take: over half a billion dollars.
His 'bad' PR stunt didn't exactly scare people away from the BO.
As for M:I:III, I think it'll be pretty big due to the birth of his daughter and what-not, coupled by extremely good advance reviews and inevitable positive word-of-mouth.

And the same is going to happen for MI3 and people don't want to admit it. People are saying Cruise isn't big and people don't care to see any movie with him in it again. WRONG! MI3 could be the highest grossing film of the summer that is. I think people are underestimating the power of that overrated actor who is Cruise.

cruise isn't overrated, he's just overexposed...all his crazy antics/religion aside, he's quite the box office draw

04-23-2006, 07:57 PM
Overexposure: Blame the media. Being the biggest movie star in the world tends to lend itself to a ****load of attention being fixated on you. The media would just not stop reporting about him, mainly because he's never been as open as he is nowadays. And now with his daughter... watch out.
No matter what, he's still got that star power, that intensity that seems to draw people to his films. It helps that he's a physical actor, doing all of his own stunts which adds to the film experience.

I think MI3 and POTC2 will be the top BO winners this year. Beacuase people go in the cinema especially to see these famous actors do their thing. Bloom, Depp and Cruise is going to take it all way. Believe me. People are just fed up of all these superhero movies.

^ i almost want to agree with you, but i think that X3 can still be a factor. especially since it'll have more action than the first 2, that'll help via word of mouth
as for superman, i think it depends on the cheese/"kid" factor/revelation to see if it has the long-term legs. no doubt it'll crush opening weekend, but when the teen queens come flooding in for some depp/bloom action it'll be interesting to see how far supes can really go
