View Full Version : What kind of flying shots would you like to see in Returns?

Personally, I've always wanted to see Superman running, taking off, and flying high into space, HOWEVER, all in one single take. It would be amazing and now that the technology exists, it could be done I think. Maybe him flying from the bottom of the ocean to far out into outer space all in one take would be amazing!

I'd also like to see some homages of some of my favorite flying sequences in STM. I don't think we'll see many, but a few will be nice.

What about you guys?

*I didn't see another post like this (and I searched) so I apologize if there is one.

Dude, I'm talking like a few seqeunces, like a total of 15 seconds or something. Not many, just showing how much better they can make a particular sequence.

I'd love to see a sequence I recognize from STM, but done better with better SFX.

I'm with you for the most part. I want this movie to be completely new and original, BUT there has to be material in the film to show that it's part of the Donner continuity, and that will have to be familiar to a lot of us.

Catching things in mid-air, like the Globe shot will be nice. I'm hoping there will be some explosions or something that shoot debris everywhere and we'll see shots of him dodging it while he's flying or knocking it out of his way. Then, of course, I want to see him get thrown around, too. Personally, I thought one of the better shots in Spiderman 2 was where Doc Ock throws him from one building to the next. (This would be where Doc has Aunt May) Of course, since there are no known supervillians, Superman would have to be moved by unexpected explosions. I'm sure there will be a missle or two in this flick.

We'll probably see something similar to that in the sequel. I mean, look at the trailer for the SR video game, where he's fighting that giant ****ing robot thing. Quite similar. I'm excited for it.

One of the very few things I liked about the pilot episode of Lois & Clark was how they showed Clark casually using his powers, like they were second nature. Things like him floating up to fix the lightbulb, walking around on the ceiling, playing with a crumpled piece of paper with his super-breath, and so on.

I would love for these kinds little touches to be in the movie. They are not big gigantic set pieces, or show-stopping "look at me!" scenes. But they add to the depth of this character, to show subtle mannerisms and little touches that incorporate his powers in very believable ways.

I think this is one of the biggest thrills watching Superman. I can't wait to see what they've pulled off with current technology. I would like to see everything above, including homages. But what I would REALLY like to see is Kal-El going supersonic, with the shockwave and boom, and then see him break mach 5 and go hypersonic. How sweet would that be?!

I would love a scene in which supes flies through building at high speeds(but not sonic boom) and we see him in a camera angle like the one seen i nthe aniamted storyboards of the plane scene but instead of just seeng his cape from behind we see his full body like the boots and cape flapping, and then he flies low passing above people, very close to them and them and then going up and banking and the camera following his moves as he swoops up and down.

Lots of good ideas, guys. Everything from the epic to the subtle. I'd like to see Superman doing everything from flying supersonic and creating waves behind him in the ocean (a'la Firefox) to using his powers casually while bored at his desk.

I'm thinking Singer is going to portray a more "realistic" view of flying; i.e. the camera shaking when Superman whizzes by or even having difficulty holding Superman in frame he's moving so fast. Maybe like how Batman Begins handled Batman's hand-to-hand combat.

I like the camera shaking, difficulty keeping Supes in frame idea. Although too much of that and I'd be a little upset--its been too long since seeing Superman on the big screen, and I want to see him using his powers as much as possible, in clear view. I understand the reason behind the way the fight scenes in BB were filmed, and technically it worked, but it did not make a lot of people happy because they were expecting the fight scenes to be like the other movies. Under Singer, it should be different, I think. Batman and Superman being opposites most of the time, I feel that Superman should be shown on camera differently. But I'm not really worried, I trust Singer to deliver.

SolidSnakeMGS
04-25-2006, 04:52 PM
Oh trust me, I want to CLEARLY see Superman flying, and I'm sure we will. I think we may see some of this BB type camerawork when the action calls for it, i.e. lots of chaos and confusion.

We've seen some fast panning already; once in the blogs and then at the end of the teaser when Superman flies by at incredible speeds. It's kind of a jarring effect really, and lends a good feel for Superman's speed. It's like he moves so fast we can barely see it.

I remember a while back reading or seeing that they wanted to try and shoot the flying scenes as if they were trying to film a real life jet flying through the air to give that real life feel of motion and flight as the camera is trying to focus on him. If so, it can be very stunning visual feast. Just think of the movie Stealth (I know it sucked but it had some really good flying sequences). They have the same VFX team on SR.

Once in a while there's this ungrateful task of explaining joeks and ironies to that "especially skilled" kind of posters:

Nolan didn't a exact replica of the bat-suit and yet it worked. The "replica formula" is not for 100% of movies. It also worked for X-Men.

Nolan can do what he likes because Batman's costume is not fixed in stone like Supermans.

Yes it was. Untill Burton came in 1989 and changed it forever by improving the original concept. Before 1989, Batman's suit was grey tights and blue mask and cape. Another example of how non replicas work very good.

You don't mess with Superman's costume.

Thats' why Singer just made little changes.

You think you are clever with your comments, but one look at your avatar shows your taste in characters.

If you don't, then I applaud your honesty since you don't have anything to feel clever about.

Yeah, it seems you like really Camp versions of the Joker with the Cesar "queerio" Romero.

Another ungrateful task due to my commitment with he "especially skilled audience": I don't really like Cesar Romero too much, but since my name is El Payaso I thought a clown would be nice but not anyone. Then, I didn't want it to be the comics Joker because it would have been too 'hey I'm a sicko, beware I feel identified with the Joker' an I didn't want Nicholson because it was too much about a specific movie.

Soyou see, Cesar Romero was ideal since it was a parodic image I am not engaged to (not big fan of the 60's TV series) and that you shouldn't take too seriously, which is something you totaly fail at, amongst many other things.

Guess that means Cesar isn't the only rectum rider in town,

Guess that means Cesar isn't the only rectum rider in town,

Looks like El Payaso joined the rectum riding brigade.

The rectum riding brigade?

...What the Hell is wrong with people on these boards?

I have only seen the GIF above, and IMO, it doesnt surpass the flying in SR. Plus, Iron Man will be a lot easier to render, since he doesnt have a cape or hair that has to flap with the wind does he?

That explains it, that gif is preceded by some scenes involving jet fighters and Iron Man in aerobatic maneuvers that are outstanding, and the gif does not include the sound fx, which are surely an integral part of any effect work.

It's not about capes and hair it's about angles, employing sound fx, editing and clever camera work, which IMO in SR were rather proletariat, repetetive, and mundane.

Well i disagree, i thought the flying in SR was brilliant, and i like that his hair and cape flapped while flying, made it all the more real IMO. Plus, as i said earlier, Iron Man will be easier to do than Superman was.

One of the details of the Iron Man scenes involves the force of the air on his limbs, it's evident in the footage, but less so in the gif, the use of the repulsars in Iron Man's palms, and various machinations in the armor, in order to steer, attentions to CGI details that IMO does not bespeak of the ease of creating the effect, relative to Superman in flight.

The cape, a no brainer, one of the faults I find in STM's flying is the static position of the cape during most flying scenes.

The hair tho, would work for me if Superman's "do" in SR was consistently a loose toussled look, which would fit the flying. However for me the adherence to the spit curl coif in non-action scenes looked very fake and forced. Was he always super-combing his hair into that look? In order for it to be a natural appearance the hair would by and large be un fazed (ala STM) during the flying scenes.

Not a big deal to be sure but it did bother me.:yay:

Well it didnt bother me to much the way his hair was flapping all around one minute and perfectly done the next, there are little moments like this in every movie, and i thought his hair and cape flapping REALLY added realism to it.

BUT, come 2008 i may be agreeing with you about IM, HOWEVER, it does have a 2 year advantage on SR, which is a lot in SFX terms.

True, but those are typically continuity faux pas, in the case of SR it was "part of the plan."

Absolutely, the technology is rapidly advancing in it's abilities, but the technology is only a tool in the director's hand. The sophistication of the technology does not guarantee a "wow" response.

In most of SR' flying scenes, Superman traveled in a prone position in a straight line. Very rarely was I impressed with his manueverability or marveled at his speed and power. This was not the fault of the technology, but it was the fault of unimaginative creative input.

The only flying that impressed me on SR was the plane sequence and the gliding down in the roof of the DP.The rest is just meeeeeh.

Even those scenes lacked some punch for me. No thrilling take off to the rescue, missed oportunity to show us Superman rocketing past the pursuit jets, etc.

I know...I guess we`ll just have to be happy with SII...That take off was amazing...

I thought those scene were amazing to be honest , especially Superman swivelling with the plane as he is trying to catch the nose. That small bit of that whole scene still leaves me breathless every time.
