I have both the Ultimate Avengers movies and enjoy them both. You just have to realize that it's not based entirely on the Ultimates nor is it based entirely on the Avengers... it's kind of a polished mix of the two.

Iron Man was surprisingly good and I look forward to getting the Dr. Strange.

why do you pre-order so much? i've never seen a movie sell out... ever.. and i live in friggin LA, where everything sells out.

Amazon prices are much much lower than any prices you can find in stores, at least when it comes to High-Def discs. Titles that are $25 in stores are available to me on Amazon for $17, for example.

And there have been titles that sell out before all the pre-orders are even sent out. For example, many people who Pre-ordered "Planet Earth" that released this week have gotten emails saying that there's a backorder on the title and that it'll be shipped out "within 30 days". So the earlier you pre-order the title, the better chance you get of being at the top of the list of who gets the titles shipped out first.

Finally, I live in a small town in Ohio, where my local stores don't carry many of the titles I want to buy yet. Both of my buys this week are not available in any store near me at all.

I would agree with you if the only difference between DVD and HD DVD was picture quality. But since HD DVD also offers many new cool features and interactivities not possible on DVD, IMO it's completely worth it. Not to mention that it's really annoying to watch a standard-def show or movie after getting used to HD. The true difference in the two resolutions are not truly noticable until you get used to HD and try to switch back to SD.

In the case of a movie like Liar Liar, that is true, but in the case of a new release, I think it's worth the extra 5-10 bucks. It really depends though on if you want the extra picture and sound quality.

ill agree to that.. Liar Liar would be a waste in Hi-def imo... but stuff with visually stunning scenes, and FX that get you your moneys worth then definately. I just don't see a point in rebuying older movies in Hi-def

I also agree. I wouldn't be buying "Liar Liar" in HD if I already had it on regular DVD, but since I didn't, I figured I might as well now.

How big is the jump in quality from standard DVD to HD-DVD?

HUGE!

It's kinda strange though. You really don't get the full effect of how much of an upgrade it is until you watch a few movies in HD and then try to go back to watching something in SD. THAT'S when you realize how big of a difference the picture quality is!

I look at it a lot like when I first got glasses. It was cool to see how clear things were when I got my glasses, but I kinda thought to myself "it's not THAT big of a help", but then when I got used to them and tried going around without them on, I couldn't believe I ever was able to manage without them for so long! It's the same with HD DVD compared to DVD: The difference is absolutely incredible.


Also, a lot of people don't realize that HD DVD offers more than just a difference in picture quality. It also offers HD Audio and many very very cool interactive special feature possibilities that you could never see on DVD:

- Wanna customize the look of the cars in the racing scenes of "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"? HD DVD allows you do do so!

- Wanna track where each assassin is in relation to the target in "Smokin' Aces" or track where the cars are during the races in "F&F: Tokyo Drift"? HD DVD allows you to pop up a GPS tracker over the movie as you watch the scenes!

- Wanna see how they did the special effects of a particular scene in a PiP box in the corner of the screen while the movie plays? Many HD DVDs allow you to do so with PiP Video Commentary!

And there are so many more cool possibilities that the format is able to do that the studios are just barely beginning to scratch the surface of!


I'm definitely sounding like an advertisement now, but I'm telling you, I don't regret for a moment getting my HD DVD player and all of my titles. I have a HDTV, why keep limiting myself to standard-def movies? And for only about $17-$19 each for most titles, that's really not much more than a regular DVD costs.

My last DVD was The Departed for HD DVD. It was DAMN expensive too because it is one of those that has the HD DVD on one side and the DVD on the other.

So far I have King Kong, The Departed, and Goodfellas on HD DVD. I haven't committed myself too much to the new format yet, although it does look really really nice.

I watched it and fell in love with it. I was blazed, and the film took me on a journey. Then I watched it sober, and I loved it every bit as much.
