The video is allegedly two minutes long, although its contents weren't divulged. We're guessing a wild breathtaking battle on Earth. Knowing Microsoft, the publisher will want to show all real, in-game engine footage to counter Sony's fantastical CG videos from E3 2005. When Microsoft was contacted, the company issued its standard reply, "We don't comment on speculation and rumors."

It's the ultimate n00b combo. ULTIMATE. I take pleasure in watching them fumble around when they miss and the thing overheats and they're all squirming, mwahha. And Clint will swing snipe and end up even shooting himself... that's how crazy he is. Unless he's slipped up. Which I doubt. Since he's like, a level 30 again. :marv:

I've never been really big into Halo (mainly cause I don't own an xbox) so I have a quick question. Didn't the original videos of Halo 2 shown at E3 a couple of years ago have a bunch of stuff that never even made it to the game at all? I remember hearing something about that. If it's true, then hopefully they learned from that mistake and will only include real footage of the game this time.

YEP........THE ENTIRE 9 MINUTE VIDEO, WITH GAMEPLAY, WAS COMPOSED OF STUFF THAT WAS LEFT OUT OF THE GAME. IN FACT, THE GAME ENDED PRETTY MUCH WHERE THAT VIDEO WOULD'VE TAKEN PLACE. I'D SAY THEY MADE SOME LAST MINUTE DECISIONS TO "HOLD BACK" ON SOME OF THE MATERIAL, SO THEY'D HAVE A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR THE NEXT GAME ON THE '360'. IT PISSED ME OFF AT THE TIME, BUT IF 'HALO 3' MAKES UP FOR IT, I'LL GET OVER IT.

After enjoying Halo 1 I was pretty excited for Halo 2 when I picked up my Xbox, but it turned out to be letdown total. Even what was there for the Campaign was pretty shoddy and while I enjoyed the multiplayer, it's not something I found very addictive.
If Halo 3 is just Halo in the same vein as Halo 2 was, than I won't be very excited at all, but if they're using the systems new power for new interesting gameplay mechanics and stuff, I'll probably pay attention.
When I say new and interesting game mechanics, I don't mean like Perfect Dark Zero (integrating a single player fully into working as an online co-op game is stupid for one) but having the power of the system actually effect the game in a meaningful way besides just the usual higher res textures etc.

I'd would laugh my ass of Cartman style if this game turns out to be a big flopper like no offense to the Halo Fanboys I'm just saying the 1st one was amazing 2nd kind of crap tied together and packaged just so they could make money. They pulled the idea out of their assess for crying out loud and sort of took the story in a werid direction. So Bungie better be thinking hard this time and make wise decisions or else they are going to loose even more fans.

Actually, if Bungie had pulled off Halo 2 the way they wanted to in the first place, it would have been hands down the best console shooter for years to come. Some of their ideas in the earliest previews were cool as hell, and the first announcement trailer was the real indication of what they wanted to achieve with Halo 2 to begin with. They just got overly ambitious, not realizing their technological limitations until it was too late, that the Xbox simply couldn't handle it. They had to hit the reset button on the game's development halfway through - hence they butchered the campaign mode by making the story do a complete 360 (no pun intended) towards the end and instead, concentrating squarely on multiplayer.
With the latest hardware now at their disposal, I'm fairly confident they'll be able deliver a game that will have jaws dropping on the floor like raindrops.

I remember some stuff (I was DYING to use some cool new vehicals such as a quad bike that looked really cool) b ut I cant remember what else. I am also pretty sure I saw one trailer that made out it was gonna be all out war on earth. I do hate when companies get TOO wrapped up in multiplayer. Sure it's a lot of fun playing with friends (for those of us who don't have live yet), but I don't want to pay £40 just so I can have great multiplayer I don't use too often (due to conflicting work schedules and what not) and a single player that is more or less Halo rehashed (I was gob smacked when I saw 'oh look it's another Halo!' The sheer nerve....). I hope they realise that a lot of people love Halo for the story and universe and spend time on that aspect as well as making a kick ass multiplayer.BTW anyone hear about the deal between Marvel and Bungie to publish a novel based on the Halo world? (including how Sgt Johnson escaped the flood, though that has been covered in the novel). The great thing about Halo's sucess is it came out of nowhere, and from the desire of one team to make a great game. That's what 'forced franchises' forget, and try to plan for sucess (ie Advent Rising...as soon as I read about the plans for it to be a trilogy, and have books, etc, I knew it was doomed. You really can't plan this type of sucess.).I hope the movie comes out decent too, at least better than that P.O.S silent hill (thats a whole 'nother topic.)

Can people explain to me what was missing from Halo 2 though?
Here's a post of mine some time ago from the E3 thread:
You might have read the huge cover story EGM did on Halo 2 around a year before the game's release, perhaps even before the first announcement trailer. There was tons of planned stuff that didn't make it into the game.
To start with, the infamous E3 in-game footage of New Moombasa was completely changed.
The game originally was slated to have a lot more vehicles - as far as I recall, there were at least four different versions of the Warthog (one designed for use in snow, one for troop transport etc.) and a new weaponless but ultra fast ATV-type vehicle. I also believe they cut a Covenant vehicle or two as well.
The designers said that they also had a whole mission take place on a moon, complete with less gravity etc.
The levels were planned to be more along the lines of the first game's Silent Cartographer level, in that you'll be fighting alongside friendly A.I soldiers quite often right in the middle of huge warzones ala Saving Private Ryan.
And last but not least, Jason Jones highlighted that a big part of Halo 2's gameplay and story was about "taking the fight to the Covenant" in full-scale war.
Judging from that last one, I can't help but come to the conclusion that Bungie hit the reset button on Halo 2's development halfway through when they realised that the simply can't pull it off (this is very much apparent in the Bonus DVD features) and instead, concentrated squarely on multiplayer features.
The ending of Halo 2 also screams of the "back to square one" syndrome in that it is quite obvious that the third game will also start like the second one, with the Covenant launching a full-scale assault on Earth and the Master Chief diving in with guns blazing once again, and so, in Halo 3, we'd see what Halo 2 really would have been.

More Earth levels, please!! I think in HALO 3 there should be more epic battles. Like Halo Style COD:2, with tons of allies running around getting shot, just to make it more immersive.
4 player co-op that doesn't make the game too easy, vehicles rule, put in more of them. Better story.

That would be WHF, not me. I was actually hoping for Halo 3 to show up at this year's E3. I believe a short announcement trailer like that for Halo 2 is what we'll be getting this month. And in my estimation, it's a smart move on part of Microsoft because:
(a) There's no better place than E3 to get the hype meter running for your heavyweight titles.
(b) Strategically speaking, the unveiling of Halo 3 would provide a lot more legitimacy to the 360's lineup, and would help the console in maintaining it's thunder at E3 by preventing Sony and Nintendo from stealing the show with their latest console promos which generally tend to get the most spotlight.

Exactly! That's why it's so important to give the limelight to Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Shadowrun and the new games from Rare and Lionhead.

A Halo announcement is like a "Hail Mary". It works, but it only works once. If Microsoft held off on the Halo 3 announcement until X06, they would be announcing the game literally weeks ahead of the two console launches, which would turn a ton of heads away from the PS3 and Wii's (lol) line-ups of ports and rushed games.

But neither of those games is a well known brand like Halo. Bungie's prime project is the poster child for selling 360's and which is why it is smarter to let the cat out of the bag sooner rather than later.

From my perspective, the 2 minute Halo 3 trailer is nothing but Microsoft's trump card for putting a dent in Sony and Nintendo's showing at E3 and getting a lot more limelight for the 360 itself. As for X06, I do recall reading that Bungie has gotten as far as to making their most recent builds quite playable, so a full blown demonstration at X06 is not entirely out of question.
I think it's a wise plan indeed - announce Halo 3 at E3 and take some away from the PS3 and Wii's thunder. Then showing the game up and running in all it's glory at X06 getting everyone pumped up enough to lay down the green for a 360 instead of rival consoles in the coming holiday shopping season - killing two birds with one stone. And I do believe that a next-generation Halo can turn just as many heads twice in a row. After all that is exactly what happened with Halo 2, what with the New Moombasa level presentation at E3 2003 packing just as much punch as the announcement teaser, if not more.

In the sense that Microsoft would want to get Halo 3 exposed to the people in order to generate hysteria, it's a good idea.
However, if Microsoft wants to get attention to their "smaller" titles/properties, they should hold just a few months more. They can't expect those games to get the coverage they could have if they're competing with Halo 3.

I guess that also works. Get people buying 360s for Halo 3 when the PS3 and Wii come out. The games releasing at that time for the 360 are, oddly enough, Mass Effect, Too Human and Gears of War (subject to change).
It depends on what Microsoft knows, and what I don't. But personally, I think it's wiser for Microsoft to show that they have confidence in their new properties by making them the games of the show, instead of riding the success of Halo. It will avoid making them look like Nintendo with Mario.

Dude no offense but I don't think Halo is that amazing of a game to turn heads away from consoles and it was a smart move on Microsoft to not release halo when the PS3 came out. I know that it was just Bill Gates speaking however if they did is what i'm saying Halo would get owned.
Once everyone sees the power of the PS3 at E3 there probable won't be anyone paying attention to Halo 3 if the PS3 is as powerful as what people are saying. Also theres a demo of Resistance at E3 and so many people are looking forward to that game. Maybe not you guys because you guys love Halo and think its the best FPS out there and will always be.
I'm not indicating that this is a bad thing because you have you opinions and I have mine, and i'm not trying to get you guys mad because all of you guys are fun to talk to and I don't want to offend anyone with that statment. I just think there should be room for possible competition and I think Resistance might be it.

Let me help you.
Halo 1, 2 and 3> Resistance.
'It's like that, cuz that's da way it is! huh!'
Here is an update in Insomnaic's newsletter that was mailed today.
"At Insomniac, it's also an exciting time. While it's true we've been working very hard to polish our gameplay for E3, we've been enthusiastic about doing so knowing that Resistance: Fall of Man is about to make its public debut after much anticipation. We can't wait to turn people loose and experience Resistance: Fall of Man for themselves, but with the waiting comes the inevitable feeling of having butterflies in one's stomach. While the expectation levels are high, we think we're well on our way to creating a truly next-gen FPS that blends high quality gameplay, incredibly detailed environments, rich sound and a unique, immersive universe."
So far I think this game is sounding better than Halo 1 and 2. Its sounding like Insomnaic is actually trying to create a unique story rather than Halo's Unoriginal Alien type story. All I'm really saying is that this is next generation and Halo is going to have to do something amazing to keep its legacy or it possibly might be known as the generation Halo falls.

Zenien man its cool I don't care if they flame me and call me a fan boy it doesn't really bother me. Throw your rudest remarks at me just for having an opinion and not seeing what is so great about Halo. Its cool I will admit to that but its not going to stay number one for all of gaming. They really need to realize that its PoS3sible it might fall very soon.

Sounds like an uber bland press release to me.
And isn't this about aliens too? And cyber men? Not the most original plot....
THE LIZARD#1
04-29-2006, 04:44 PM
Actually no its not about Aliens, they came up with some new idea I guess for these creatures? Someone on Gamespot said that Insomnaic was tired of doing Alien story lines because thats what they were doing in Ratchet and Clank a lot which those games are some of the most successful games out for the PS2 and possibly might counter some games sales on Xbox and 360.
They were made by Insomnaic and this team is like Monolith they come up with some amazing ideas that you wouldn't find anywhere else and the weapons are always tight as hell and you can bet that will be the same in Resistance Fall of Man. So just keep you minds open is all I'm saying.

Halo is the game that singlehandedly turned the odds in favor of the Xbox and gave the console some much-needed legitmacy in the market. It's a system-seller without a question and despite the disappointment of Halo 2, the franchise is still very much larger than life.
No matter what Sony pulls out of it's ass at E3, there's no way they can just steamroll over Halo. The same can be said of Sony's own heavyweight, MGS4. I predict both MGS4 and Halo 3 will be hitting stores during Fall 2007, which should be a "battle of the titans (and fanboys)" all over again. If you don't remember, Halo's release dates have clashed with MGS's twice and Halo has managed to more than hold it's own both times. Sony's biggest 800 lbs gorilla has been unable to silence Halo, which is why nothing will.
Once everyone sees the power of the PS3 at E3 there probable won't be anyone paying attention to Halo 3 if the PS3 is as powerful as what people are saying.
I believe it's common knowledge that the PS3 is only marginally more powerful than the 360, and that too only in a few aspects. The difference is nowhere near the level of PS2/Xbox here. Most developers have commented that the two consoles are pretty much equal, some even favoring the 360 because of the console being relatively developer-friendly, even moreso than the PS3. I don't see any validity in your talk of this so-called "power" of the PS3.

Well, good luck to them trying to outdo previous gen games that will be more than 3 years old by the time their title hits the stores.
Its sounding like Insomnaic is actually trying to create a unique story rather than Halo's Unoriginal Alien type story.
From what I've read, it very much looks like another Halo wannabe.
Super-powered soldiers going trigger-happy on what look like mutants and aliens in a futuristic world trying to save mankind from extinction. Sound familiar?
The gameplay is also supposedly described as "Halo meets Black" (not exactly something that would have me feeling enthusiastic about it, considering Black was such a bland shooter), focusing purely on action. Heck, they even ripped off the idea of the Covenant Needler from Halo.
I don't see how there's anything "original" or "unique" about all that.
All I'm really saying is that this is next generation and Halo is going to have to do something amazing to keep its legacy or it possibly might be known as the generation Halo falls.
Haha, Sony fanboys have been desperately praying for a "Halo-killer" for years now. Best give up all hope now, young one. :D

Bungie is a FPS veteran that is responsible for what is arguably the definitive console shooter franchise. Insomniac is an FPS-newbie coming fresh off kiddie platform titles like Ratchet & Clank and Spyro, neither of which were as well-recieved by either the press or gamers as Halo.
Can't see how it can get anymore one-sided than that.

honestly, lizard, some of the things you have said made my jaw drop.
Comparing Insomniac to Bungie? Wow. Just wow. That's beyond David and Goliath, that's more like Galactus and Ant man.
It seems like a really sub par fps. Oh btw Phaser thank god someone other than me didnt like Black. It got rave reviews and when I got it, it was the most generic fps I have played in a long, long time. Just super bland, which this resistance reminds me of more than anything else.
Also the PS3's marginal power superiority won't mean jack seeing as it would take much more time, effort and money to maximise it anyway.
I also said uber generic press release, ie exactly the same as every other fps press release since, well, forever.

It will be at least two more years for God of War to show up for the PS3. Besides, if Too Human is even half as good as everyone is expecting it to be, then it will most likely negate any advantage Sony is likely to derive from God of War.

But I think I figured out MGS' story. Here goes:
from the prohpets on the hills of high charity, the muscular density of the proven sins of the people descended down onto the eternal battle field of good and evil. the virtuosity of the good was never in doubt and the malevolence of pure evil opposed this, and thus the two cosmic powers were forever intwained into a ying and yang symbolic relationship; thus defining the couragous struggle of all man kind

I wouldn't say so, the plotline of Halo 2 was VERY shoddy and hashed out. The execution of the story just jumped from concept to concept with no proper exposition to back it up. Halo 1 was MUCH better put together in reguards to the flow and evolution of the story. The strife in the Covanant, is a good example of how poorly executed the concepts of Halo 2 became.

Like what? Many of the plot points in Halo 2 are pretty coherent and concise (save for a few exceptions towards the end) and the story moves at a comfortable pace and is very easy to follow. Sure, the game suddenly comes to a screeching halt near the end leaving numerous unanswered questions, but then, that's exactly what cliffhanger endings do to a story.
Halo 1 was MUCH better put together in reguards to the flow and evolution of the story.
Obviously. But then again, the campaign mode of the first Halo didn't had to be started all the way from scratch halfway through it's development cycle. Halo 2 had all the right ideas and had Bungie been able to make the game they wanted to in the first place, it would have become an instant classic.
The strife in the Covanant, is a good example of how poorly executed the concepts of Halo 2 became.
If anything, the concepts of Halo 2 were incomplete rather than "poorly executed". As for the internal conflicts between the Covenant, I didn't see anything particularly wrong with it. Sure it was cliched and perhaps even a bit generic in some ways, but then again so are most plot points in videogames.
