After being gone from the game for 6 months I am making my return to Paragon City today.
I might stay until Tabula Rasa comes and if I like that game I will swtich over to that because after that game comes Age of Conan and I can only keep two.

I logged on a few days ago, after going a while without logging on at all. There was a Rikti invasion happening all across Paragon. Not matter which borough I ran to, there they were! I kept getting shot down by these space ships! It was insane!
Thank god they turned off all debt that day.

no i was teliing it as i understood it
the original rikti war storyline occurred after 9/11 so it was a COH reflection of it. the new invasion as i mentioned earlier is a reflection of the war on terror without putting heroes at other heroes throats

Issue 11 just came out. They released two new power sets:
Willpower is a set available to Scrappers & Tankers that both resists harm, AND self-heals.
Dual Blades. That's right. Two swords.
And now, all weapon-carrying sets can customize what you want the weapons to look like. That means new swords (one of which looks like something Cloud from FF7 would use... expect clones), guns, maces (one of them is a freaking sweet warhammer), claws, and axes.

*obligatory "I didn't like it" post*
I tried it (twice) and couldn't get into it. I'm sure it's not bad if you actually have friends to play with, but for a game that was praised before release as being easily soloable and extremely casual friendly it sure did start getting pretty damn difficult pretty damn fast.

I was having a hard time finding a team around that needed a 15 empathy healer, for some reason. On Freedom, I get a ton of team invites while I'm trying to auction off my salvage.

I played CoH for about two weeks a couple years back. The character customization was amazing, that kept me busy for a while. Playing with friends was fun and I remember spending hours doing the ridiculous jumps when I get my transportation ability. However, the PVE aspect was just so awful, how you just walked into enemies and such. Perhaps it's changed now, but back when I played the actual gameplay didn't offer much.

yeah I think thats pretty much everyone's experience with COH. It's awesome for the first few months or weeks and then the repetition sets in and it becomes a chore. The only thing keeping me going is the auction/invention system. Ever since I found a rare piece of salvage and auctioned it off for over 6,000,000 influ, I've been hooked. Although the whole thing makes a few things too damn easy for me. Now that one of my toons is filthy rich, I can just buy recipes for invention-enhancements that never wear off, bid on all the appropriate salvage needed to make them, and never have to worry about replacing certain enhancements slots ever again.

Do you have a supergroup base? If you have no need for Base Salvage, check to see what you've got, and how much it's going for at the Wentworth auction houses. I made 6,000,000 off of one rare piece of base salvage.

I've been thinking about jumping back on Coh. But I never got CoV. Do I need it?? Is it fun playing as the villians? Or do most people just buy it for the bases?? And most of the time I've heard people talk about their bases, they say they don't really use them much and that the "rent" isnt' worth it... but that's just what I've heard here and there and wanted your guys opinons on it.
Are the servers still pretty active? How many people are starting over with new characters?

The Freedom and Virtue (or was it Victory?) servers are pretty much the only active ones. They added the ability to move your characters from server to server ($5 per move), so pretty much everyone is on those servers. Last time we had a Double XP Weekend, those two servers actually found their upward limits on how many users they can carry.

By some weird coincidence, back when we were all scattered across the servers (I was mainly on Justice and Guardian), those two servers were always just a little bit busier. When the developers added the paid server switch, I think a bunch of us just jumped ship. I know I got tired of logging onto Justice and writing "LFT" for hours on end while I solo patrolled the streets of Talos Island with a freaking Defender. Freedom was busy. I moved a couple characters to Freedom.
Double XP Weekends are a rarity, and they only seem to get announced about a week in advance. Just check the news on the front page of CityofHeroes.com every now and then.

Playing a villain is very similar to playing a hero except for the description of missions.
Such as instead of saving a hostage you kidnap someone and they do not follow as easily as in Heroes. Plus other small nuances.
The archetypes are quite different and can be amusing to play.

Some time in 2009, the people who did COH will release another Superhero mmorpg. It's called Champions Online. Then it'll be all fresh and new again, then you can form a SHH SG.

I'm not even totally sure if I can run that. It looks cell shaded so I might be ok. I have 3 months of city of heroes coming to me tomorrow, I got 2 friends to do the refer a friend program. So any current players should speak up if your out there, I'm on Virtue.

Champions Online just got some pretty tough competition. Have you already seen the DC Online vids or read some of the previews? It's going to be a full on action game, no dice rolling or anything. If you hit something, you hit it. Supposedly it'll allow the same freedom as Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Spider-Man games.
No classes, free power selection and you have even an "Inspired by" option, so you can for example choose "Inspired by Superman" and you'll get all of his basic abilities on your character sheet. And no grinding up to lvl 14 to get flight. If you say your character can fly, he can fly. But you'll learn moves like dive bomb as your lvl progresses.

Has this game improved at all in the past 6-7 months? I played this thing religuously for the first year and a half it was out, then right after PvP launched I basically just gave up as the repitition just killed me. I've logged back in during a few of the free weekends, but really didnt see much of interest even with the CoV stuff.

Infinity damn, I'm on freedom. I'd do a character transfer, but making a newb on Inf sounds a lot cheaper. I just need to know what lvl you are and stuff. I'm also an Admin on a large Ventrilo server, and I'm trying to get my CoH/CoV channel rippin'. So if you and your RL friends or maybe a SG need a vent server, you should help me get this started.

To take a pic like I did. Just pull up the character select screen then press the "Print Screen" on your keyboard (it's right about "Insert"). Then got to MS Paint and press CTRL+V. There it is! :)

I've always wanted to get a game like this, but I need a few answers first:
-How much to open an account, and how much do you pay monthly to play?
-What's the level regarding customization options? I write my own comics, and the hero I want to create is pretty complex in design, so I want to know if I have enough options to make my in-game model look remotely close to his design.
-Regarding power selection, is there any way I could possibly get energy blast, super strength and flight in one hero, or is there only a limited set of combinations?
-Is there a required server I have to play on when I start out? Or can I choose whichever server I want?
-What's the deal with Supergroup/team assembly? How would I go about doing that in the future?
-Going with the customization/creation question, can I make my character look like a teenager? Or are all PCs adults? Because as I stated before, complax design I have in mind.
-Do weapons count as powers, or can you havde weapons AND powers?
-Regarding powers, I do plan on selecting the Blaster archetype, with Energy blast as my primary power if I purchase this game, but my last question is if there is a set color for the energy my character blasts? Or can I change it to a different color? Say... black maybe?
I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan on getting Champions Online and DCU Online, but I just want to know if I should get those over CoH or get all three, so any answers to the questions I posted above would help me immensely. Thank you. :yay::up:

It costs $20 to get the City of Heroes/Villains double-pack. The first month of gameplay is free/included with purchase of the game. After that, it's $15 monthly.
-What's the level regarding customization options? I write my own comics, and the hero I want to create is pretty complex in design, so I want to know if I have enough options to make my in-game model look remotely close to his design.
The level of costume design is so elaborate, it's downright ridiculous. In fact, I think City of Heroes has the most detailed customization of any MMORPG.
-Regarding power selection, is there any way I could possibly get energy blast, super strength and flight in one hero, or is there only a limited set of combinations?
There's a limited set of combinations. You start off with a primary power set, then get a secondary power set to go with it. Allow me to explain...
There's the Blasters set, which includes every kind of shooting power the game has. Psychic powers, fire starting, guns, bow/arrow, electricity. All of it. After choosing to be a Blaster, you get a secondary power set that compliments it, let the ability to set traps, low range energy attacks, ect.
Another power set is Tanker, which is the invulnerability set. These are your bullet proof or armored powers. You can take a ton of damage, and people often want you on their teams to attract all of the bad guys' attention. All of your secondary powers involve either hand-to-hand attacks, or melee weapons. Sadly, Tankers can't deal much damage.
Then you've got Scrappers, who deal all of the major short-range damage. These are the martial artists, sword swingers, and strong guys. All of their secondary powers are defensive, but not as powerful as Tankers.
Controllers have all of the illusion powers, summoning, mind control (Blasters only do psychic attacks. Controllers are the guys that make bad guys attack one another), and buff/debuff powers to make people stronger and weaker. All of their secondary powers are Defender powers, which I'll get to in a second.
Defenders are your healers, force field makers, and power boosters. Defenders have the easiest time finding a team, which is great because they suck at fighting alone. Their secondary powers are Blaster powers, only weaker.
I should note that everybody has the option of getting a "Travel power" like flight, teleportation, or superspeed once you reach level 14.
-Is there a required server I have to play on when I start out? Or can I choose whichever server I want?
You can play on whatever server you want. There is a Training Zone you have the option of start out at, which I really recommend for first-timers. It walks you through the basics of the game until you complete your first mission. Then you're let loose into the rest of the world, already at level 2.
-What's the deal with Supergroup/team assembly? How would I go about doing that in the future?
Well, Supergroups and Teams are two different things. Teams are temporary groupings of up to 7 (or was it 8?) people. This is usually a diverse team of players who assemble for the sake of completing a single mission, or a series of missions. You're allowed to form Teams after a few levels of gameplay, usually by searching for people with a "Looking for Team" status turned on.
Supergroups are full-on alliances you join with countless other players. You get your own supergroup base, and a shared chat room. This makes it easier to find other players to form a Team. Once you've been invited to a Supergroup, there are usually conditions for staying in the group. You usually have to turn on "Supergroup Mode" so that all of the money you make off missions goes to the group, and they sometimes kick you out of the group if you don't log on at least once every few weeks.
-Going with the customization/creation question, can I make my character look like a teenager? Or are all PCs adults? Because as I stated before, complax design I have in mind.
There's a scale at which you can set your character's height, and a series of faces to choose from that are young-looking, old-looking, and alien/demonic. I think I once ran across a Supergroup consisting entirely of teenage-looking characters with "Kid" or "Teen" in their name.
-Do weapons count as powers, or can you havde weapons AND powers?
Weapons count as powers. In fact, they all fall under the Scrapper and Tanker power sets (except for guns and bow/arrows, which are Blaster powers). There are a couple of temporary power/weapons you can pick up that usually have a time limit or # of uses before they fade away. The game also offers something called "Veteran Rewards" to players who've been signed up for a long time-- each reward is given every 3 months, and one of those rewards is a permanent Ghost-Slaying Axe you can use, no matter what your other powers are.
-Regarding powers, I do plan on selecting the Blaster archetype, with Energy blast as my primary power if I purchase this game, but my last question is if there is a set color for the energy my character blasts? Or can I change it to a different color? Say... black maybe?
All the same color. Blue, I think. The only people who shoot black energy are Defenders with dark powers (and those are usually powers like sapping strength from enemies).
I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan on getting Champions Online and DCU Online, but I just want to know if I should get those over CoH or get all three, so any answers to the questions I posted above would help me immensely. Thank you. :yay::up:

If weapons are part of a power set, then would you happen to know which archtype and powerset contains any attacks using a bo-staff? Kinda like Robin's?
Also, I read somewhere that when you pick your powerset, you have to decide the nature of your character's powers, for example: Natural, Science, Magic, Mutation, etc... What do these mean?
Also, this may sound kinda off, but can your character wear sneakers and have a hood? And is there a sorta baggy jeans/pants option when making your character in the character creator? Because I want my character to basically end up looking like or end up looking closely like this if possible:
http://www.freewebs.com/blacklight521/blacklight2.7.bmp
Is there also a part where we can write our own character's origins? Can we even create our own archenemy?

Actually, I don't think there are any bo-staffs. Even if there was one, it'd likely be a Scrapper type of power, and you said you wanted to make a Blaster.
Also, I read somewhere that when you pick your powerset, you have to decide the nature of your character's powers, for example: Natural, Science, Magic, Mutation, etc... What do these mean?
When you start playing, you begin with one or two powers (based on what you chose from your power set), the Brawl attack (which is a simple punch), and one attack based on your origin.
Natural receives a throwing knife attack
Science gets a tranquilizer dart
Magic gets a charm that lowers opponents' defense
Mutants get a power that lowers opponents' attack
Technology gets a taser gun.
These attacks are mainly meant to help you out toward the beginning of the game. The damage they do is very little, and you can't enhance them in any way.
Your origin also determines what kind of Enhancements you can use. Basically, all powers and abilities have "slots" that you can put Enhancements on. The game starts off only letting you buy "training" enhancements, but later allows you to buy more powerful enhancements based on your origin. There are stores scattered throughout the city dedicated to any one particular origin.
Also, this may sound kinda off, but can your character wear sneakers and have a hood? And is there a sorta baggy jeans/pants option when making your character in the character creator? Because I want my character to basically end up looking like or end up looking closely like this if possible:

Sneakers and baggy pants are no problem. The lists of Boots and Pants are pretty long, but they're in there.
You can have a hood, but it'll be on at all times. If you want a character with black hair and sunglasses on his forehead (which I think is possible, since I have a character with goggles on his forehead), you'll have to go hood-less.
Is there also a part where we can write our own character's origins? Can we even create our own archenemy?
Yes! When you're setting up your character, the last things you do are choose a name (good luck with that one) and write an origin (which is optional). Whenever other players click on your character for his info, they'll be able to read the origin. You can also edit your origin at any time.
Oh, and you can enter a battle-cry for your character to shout (through text). I can never remember which key makes him shout, though.
On that note, I'm going to recommend to you the Paragon Wiki: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/

Thank you very much again, Manic! I really appreciate the information. I just have one last question, in regards to a chest symbol. Does it have to be in the sternum area, or can it be moved around and made small enough to fit on one side of the chest? Can we also upload our own custom symbol, or do we have to pick from the options they have?
Manic
01-02-2009, 03:14 AM
It has to be on the sternum. If you're wearing a coat, it can be moved to the upper left chest. You can only select from numbers 0-9, letters A-Z, and a series of symbols that range from comets to crosses to fists to birds. Later on, you can earn the ability to use Greek letters.
If you're trying to go for something like Robin's chest symbol, you're out of luck unless you put a jacket on him. Even then, none of the game designers ever thought to allow you to put circles around your chest symbol letters. Other than a healer I have with a faded cross on his coat, I normally avoid chest symbols.

There is ONE way to have have the option to switch between hood-up and hood-down mode, though (unless this has changed in the last year or two since I've played) you can't do it at first: Alternate Costumes! :)
Once you reach level....15, is it?...you can get your first of two Alternate Costumes, which can be anything from a simple modification of your character's costume, to a completely different costume. My character Captain Cricket, for example, had 2 Alternate costumes. The first was just a white T-shirt and jeans, which I used as his civilian "costume". I'd have my character run around in this "costume" whenever he wasn't fighting and then once it was time to fight, I'd run back into an alley or somewhere more out-of-sight and toggle his actual costume costume. Not necessary at all, but was fun for me and made it feel just that little bit more superhero-y. His second Alternate Costume was a black version of his suit, much like Spidey's black costume. I'd switch to that costume whenever the fights would get really tough, again just to get a little more into the whole role-playing fun of the game, even though the Alternate Costumes have absolutely no effect on your actual powers or anything (unless that has changed in the last 2 years).
So anyway, a person could create their character hoodless, and then once they get their first Alternate Costume, they could use that to have the costume look identical to their Primary one...but with a hood! So then he could toggle at any time between having that hood or not. :)
...crap...now I'm getting the urge to start playing the game again...

Can you tell us if we will have secret identities in the game? (Ahalls25)
Secret Identities are going to be a growing part of the game, starting with special costume pieces and associated effects.
After reading that piece of the article on the website, (in my opinion anyways) it already has CoH beat. I've always wanted a secret identity feature.

I am just waiting for the DC game to come out later this year. I don't see the need to spend $50 on a game that will be just tying me over till the DC Game comes out. The only PC games I will play is Age Of Conan and this DC game.

-necro's thread-
Champions looks -amazing-. Sadly, I'm still stuck on CoH because with the port over to Mac I can actually play it on my macbook pro, which is what I drag along with me every where (i.e. school). I am seriously thinking about investing in a PC desktop though just for Champions. Looks freakin' amazing.
Bought a renewal for CoH three months back and haven't stopped playing since then >.>
Global handle is @Twylight, based on Guardian mainly.

Far be it from me that I should endorse sticking with a Mac, but can't you just buy Windows and some VMWare Fusion (or Parallels) instead of getting a whole PC?

I bought this game back in '07. My computer was terrible at the time and the game lagged a lot. I think I still have it somewhere not sure. Oh well, I'm looking forward to DC Universe Online. I came here to find a thread on it and can't. Guess it's too early to start one up?
Think I'll have to check out "Champions" though.

I'm still unsure if I'll be making the switch to Champions. It's likely, since one of my best friends will most definitely get it due to it's 360 availability, however it all comes down to the game play and the powersets, and the ability to make my trademark character.
COH/COV is a dam great game, just through the almost limitless customization of both the look and the powers of your superhero. And the lvl 14+ skills are fun as hell, super jump, super speed, flight, teleportation.
You need to play this game, at least play the 14-day trial.

I think its actually called retroscope... i could be completely wrong with the name of the art style. Easily confused with cel shading. But are different. And i know that CO has stated it IS cell shaded... the screen shots and videos indicate otherwise.
But the reason they went with that direction is because it looks more like a comic book. Which i'm happy with.
SuperFerret, go to the website and educate yourself. You can learn powersets and travel powers... theres videos there to check out. Game appears to be amazing.

Yeah but I do think it gives the game a level of personality...my only issue with COH is that after attaining level 50 my heroes should be treated at least like a 2 tier hero instead of like Black Lightning or Speedball

Cool. How many people are playing this game anyway, is it still as crowded as say, a year ago? And I wonder how they plan to keep their subs when DC Universe Online is released...
SuperFerret
11-27-2010, 11:11 AM
It's actually more crowded than it was a year ago. Going Rogue has rejuvenated all but the smallest servers. I personally don't think DCUO will impact it in any significant way. There may be a slight dip for a while like when Champions came out, but honestly, DCUO doesn't look like it has strong legs (though if the PS3 version doesn't fall through the way that Champions for the 360 did, it might have a better chance).
