In my honest opinion, even though he was a better character than I expected, he just wasn't ment to be in the movie; they sort of just threw him in because Raimi wanted him in. The main story of the movie should have mainly been about Peter finding the symbiote suit and starting to show his inner demons. With throwing in three villians, the movie seemed to have a hard time balancing three different story lines; the movie could have went more smoothly without SandMan. To me Flint's story was something just tossed into the story and really didn't involve the main premesis of the story. Venom and Harry would have been enough to handle.

Well, to me the main point of bringing up Peter´s inner demons was to bring up the revenge element, cuz the will to get revenge for Ben´s death is arguably the darkest aspect of Peter´s personality. Since Marko´s always been a thug in comics, it was the most natural character to throw in that context. In the sense of the story, Venom was really the character that felt less useful to me. He was just the more extreme version of Peter´s darkness.

BTW, Transformers now is 69% fresh, almost as much as Spidey 3... Looks like the early positive buzz on the movie was a little exaggerated...
