Just starting to learn shading, any advice is much appreciated.
i have had trouble with that as well. best advice let yourself go don't worry if you go dark. was always one of my problems, so my shading was generally only on the light side so it always looked a lil flat. my best drawingd i think are the ones that had a lot of range of shading from very light to very dark.

when shading, the most important thing is to know where your light source is. depending on where its coming from, different features will cast different shadows.

Actually, that's one of my biggest problems right now. I sort of get where the shading should be, but how it fits different parts of the body, the form of the shadows, I'm still working on that kind of stuff. Haven't gotten into much of that yet in art class.
And thanks ghost.

08-17-2006, 07:26 PM
mee, how old are you? i think you should start trying to develop your own style, you seem to have a good command of the human form, but it looks generic. (not trying to be mean)
It is all free hand, (well, rulers for some lines) and yeah I guess he is missing an ear, heh.
15, I am slowly developing a style, (at least I'd like to think so:woot: ) I realize it is somewhat generic, but I'm starting to try things my own way.
Kaboom
08-17-2006, 09:27 PM
youre good for 15. start experimenting and dont be afraid to mess up. right around your age i started changing how i did things, i like to refer to my style as a mix between charest and ramos. but you gotta do what you like. keep at it!
My style's like a melting pot. Jim Lee, Dell' Otto, Cassaday, Ross, Timm, you may not see it, but it's there. But I'm trying to mold it into my own, no one likes a copycat.
blksuperman2
08-18-2006, 06:33 PM
You're 15 huh. I'm even more impressed by your style now. I had you pegged for a much older dude. Keep drawing man, and keep up the good work.
As for the comments of your style looking generic. I would only suggest looking at different drawing guides. It might help in developing more volume and depth to your characters.
I am looking to get more books. I heard Drawing the Marvel Way is a good one, and Dynamic Figure Drawing (I think that's the title) is tops on my "to buy" list.

I like how simplistic your work is, the line art that is. I can't draw a picture without instintively trying to give it depth, I guess i overcrowd my stuff. your work screams to be colored, imo.
ghost113
08-19-2006, 07:11 AM
you should try and make your pics darker.

If you want to download that, just be aware that there is a second seperate program you have to download to get the blasted thing to even open.
I've tried to use gimp but it's a strange program that uses a couple different windows at the same time. I can't quite figure out all the commands, and if I can't figure out all the ins and outs of a program within five minutes I leave it, which doesn't happen often

Since you asked for commentary good or bad, I'm going to try and give you somce constructive critism. One of the things I've noticed on your work is that you need to work on your proportions. First I want you to bend over, when you get all the way down your nose will hit a bit above your knees. Making the legs to short is the most common mistake any starting artist makes. The second thing you need to work on is placement of the eyes. This is most prominent in your Superman face, but shows up elsewhere. The eyes should be in the middle of the head. Chin and top of the forehead should be equal distance away. Your eyes tend to be closer to the top of the head than they should be. Now lets take a quick look at arms. Your elbow is about halfway down the arm and if you make a first, and drop your arm it will end up about halfway between your knee and thigh. I hope these breif rules of thumb help you improve your artwork. Other than that, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback. Here's a slightly tweaked/less bulky :) version with my attempt at shading. (which I'm still very new to, I know it's not spot-on)

Nice. You're Daredevil is really well done, Mee. Perfectly dark based, and the rain is a great touch. Have you ever drawn Nightwing?

Thanks, and as for Nightwing, not alot. He's one that I'd like to get around to doing.
Finally got around to finishing batboy's request, don't think all of the shadows are quite right, but "practice makes blah blah blah" I guess.

Good work Mee. Now try to position them differently. It would better practice to try other poses, since both poses are the same here :p.
And it looks like you could use more practice on the hands too. I've never been good at hands either :)

It's not exactly the same pose...heh. Anyway, I did have a different one for Ivy, but couldn't get it to come out right. And hands are definately one of the hardest things to master, I think.
Thanks for the critique.;)
