Hey, BoBByJoMo here. I would just like to ask all the administrators a simple, yet troublesome question.
Why are the members of this forum restricted to small avatars until they reach 3,000 posts?
I mean, I have 500-some posts and it will take me ages to get to 3,000 (I've been a member since November, 2005). I know plenty of other members have easily surpassed that amount in about a month or so, a fact which still baffles me, yet I manage. Still, though, maybe you should consider other requirements for avatars and who gets what.
Maybe another idea is that you have to have been a member for however much time you think is required. Or maybe just allow those who do not have 3000 posts to have slightly larger avatars. Then, of course, you could also allow the veterans and those with a large quantity of posts to have larger avatars too.
I know this might not seem like an important topic, with about 16,000 posts yourself, but for others in similar scenarios as to my own, it can be a hassle and bother to have such tiny avatars with blurry images that no one can even see. It's so difficult to request a small avatar in the Official Avatar Thread, most of the times, people are simply ignored, so that bigger ones can be made.
I don't mean to be a bother for you, I'm just bringing up a topic. Please consider my request and please reply. Thank you for your time.

Why is it a "hassle"? You can still post, can't you?
In any case, it has to do with bandwidth. The amount of traffic this site gets, it's not very cost efficient to let every one of the 25,000 or so registered users have a large avatar which will take up bandwidth, especially when some are only here for a brief period of time

Go to your UCP and then click on 'Edit Avatar' (on the left). You can upload an avy there. However, you may have to wait around 30 minutes or so for the scripts to update before doing so.

Is it still a bandwidth problem if the avatar is linked to an off-site host?

Yes, because the server takes it and converts it to host the picture on it's own.
Like the 'load from URL' option in photobucket. ;)

Spidey in your Avatar is uglier then Iron Spidey.

Could we not just ... not have them host it?
Seriously, why does SHH need to host them?

Instead of doing the post count thing (however many posts it takes to get an avatar) why not just make it according to registration date? That way it'll cut back on spamming, and also allow people who post slowly but have been here faithfully to have their bigger avatars. I can understand the thought of not wanting everyone to have huge avatars if they're not regulars and just using up bandwidth space, but I can't see how this will be much of a problem as far as that's concerned. Also, it'll add more punishment for banned users.
Enough Kipobe wisdom for one day.
Edit - oh, and you can merge this with this (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229795) thread... didn't realize.

I've been with that idea since day one.

Any chance of getting bigger avatars like if someone gets 10,000 posts they can get a 150x150 avatar,30,000 posts to get a 175x175 avatar, and 50,000 posts for a 200x200 avatar?

Haha, that's just friggin' ridiculous. I miss when everyone was restricted to 50x50 and Guyverjay was king. :(

Guyverjay was the official avatar king. He had the best avatars, and made them for fellow SHH users. His avatars were immensely popular, and everyone wanted one. Then he eventually stopped making them. Then there was a while when Joseph_Freefall and BigRicky were making them, too. They were immensly popular as well, Mine never really took off, however.

Often the best technical avatars aren't the most eye-catching, especially since they become so widespread. My favorite ones are usually the ones that are a bit simplistic, but more iconic in nature, or something having a unique dynamic to it. I won't admit it, but Toven really has one of the better avatars out there.

click User CP
click Edit Avatar
then choose where you want to upload your avvy from ... either from your CP or from some web hosting site.
Then click Save changes
