This game is going to be awesome. It's really a step in the right direction for video games.
Could this be the spiritual succesor to Thief?
WhatsHisFace
05-03-2006, 12:47 AM
I only doubt it because
A: It has zero people from Ion Storm/Looking Glass working on it
B: They probably aren't trying to make it play like Thief.
I'm sure it's possible that there will be things in this game that remind us of Thief, as most games have some form of a nod to another game in some way, but for a true spiritual successor to Thief, we may have to look for a while.

Good enough and then some. I've heard from people who have seen this in action, and it's an amazing game. A lot of the character control is generated on-the-fly in the game, so it's very fresh and it's very open to exploration.
For example, any wall that has something protruding out three inches or more every so often can be climbed. You hit one button for your left arm, another for your right, and same for your legs.
It's like what Will Wright was talking about with Spore.
So yeah, this game will be flippin' amazing. :D

This intriguing Ubisoft Montreal-lead GDC session, discussing the company's next-gen title, started just a few minutes later than its scheduled time with the somewhat unexpected announcement from conference staff that no picture or video footage may be taken during the conference.
It was only somewhat unexpected since it is possible to merely talk about company projects and processes without showing a single image of internal tools and builds; many lectures choose to go that route. This was not one of them, and the announcement helped raise the expectations of the audience.
Project Assassin is Ubisoft Montreal's working name for their game set on redefining the action genre for next-generation consoles; with such ambition comes a healthy mix of strong, disruptive design philosophies and a stiff shot of new technology, as was presented. Representing Project Assassin were Creative Director Patrice Desilets, whose previous work was on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Producer Jade Raymond.
The next-generation of consoles will afford developers more possibilities than ever before; with that in mind, Patrice's vision for next-generation games consists of organic design. Patrice looked at what was possible in reality and wondered, "Why do we create rules for our characters instead of using the ones we have in the real world?" From this, he states that the more game rules can mirror real-life rules, the better players are able to suspend their disbelief and be immersed in the game. He also states that with a foundation in real world rules, games can be made even more accessible to the non-gaming public because of their familiarity with those rules.
Patrice showed the audience a reference video montage they used for the actions and scenarios that they would like to see in this game. Among the clips were scenes from Raiders of the Lost Art, Braveheart, the French film Banlieue 13 featuring noted traceur David Belle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Belle), Japanese anime action scenes, and American football game video game clips. All the scenes featured different types of interactions, from people using the architecture and environment in sophisticated ways to motion through crowds to various methods of combat. "In order to be accessible and immersive in a rich and complex world, interactivity must be interactive," he said.
New Tools
He then moved to the theory and practice component of the session's title, using existing videos to show the current state of video games before switching to the tools they developed to create a different type of mechanic.
Patrice began by talking about the game cliché of the double jump. It exists only in video game parlance and is not only inorganic, it is not understood by anyone except video game players. Instead, Patrice uses human possibilities for jumping. "Just like in real life a jump shouldn't be hard to do… you shouldn't have to think about it." The team designed a system of targetable jumping, using dynamic blending of start and end positions based on all human possibilities, and in this system, a jump cannot be modified once it is started, unlike the video game convention. Jade then presented the jumping tool they developed, which featured numerous beams which the game avatar could jump onto or hang from; designers could use this tool to see the full range of possibilities of the avatar and system.
Afterward, Patrice presented the climbing cliché; a different texture on a wall signaled to the player that it was climbable; instead of this, Patrice set a rule that any thing that juts out 10 centimeters can be used as a handhold or step. This gives the player horizontal and vertical possibilities and, like real life, make climbing about targeting the right place rather than being able to or not. Again, Jade presented the climb tool, which shows a 3D object and an avatar, and presents the possibilities of motion with that object. It featured all the different possible poses for climbing and animates between each one using blending and inverse kinematics.
In the larger realm of level design, again Patrice stated that they take a cue from real life, making it a totally free path rather than the linear rhythm sequence of previous games. This provides different relationship between level designers and art designers. Typically, level designers flag the path of interactivity within an environment; now, the tools can create these flags based on the 3D art assets. This means that level designers have to work much more closely with art because the visuals actually create the gameplay. Jade showed a video tech demo of what results from these design decisions; it featured a very fleshed-out environment, which the avatar had no problem traversing through running, climbing, and jumping on top of and around buildings. She noted that in this video, all the player is doing is moving with the directional pad and pressing a single button.
Beyond Fighting
The next cliché Patrice presented was in fighting among NPCs. Rather than the room to room "sausage link" design he presented in previous games, fights should follow reality, with swords being as lethal as they normally are and fights being as escapable as the world surrounding would permit. Another tech demo showed a character working within this system and surviving through an auto-block system Patrice developed for this idea.
But "…interaction with NPCs should be more diverse than killing," Patrice said. Just like in real life, people should be obstacles; pushing and unbalancing should also happen. He showed video clips of Madden and FIFA to demonstrate how sports games are already doing this. Jade then presented a series of videos showing how an avatar would automatically move his hands to push or twist his body to accommodate the people that were in his way while he moved. Sometimes he would unbalance or push someone down; eventually, the guard characters began to push him down. They would even pin him by the arms and keep him from moving after enough time.
Patrice then talked about the AI in the controller interface that's necessary for making this happen. Over 700 contextual interactions are in place and there is still more to come. Each button is mapped to a body part, and intensity dictates the type of action that happens; five buttons and the directional are responsible for all the controls in the game.
Future Vision
The final video showed a full gameplay sequence that featured all of these elements. The avatar walked through a crowded street and jumped from rooftop to rooftop before descending to street level to assassinate a character, then had to escape from a large group of guards intent on either arresting or killing him. The video ends with him about to ride the horse to escape, and the two note that there is a lot more that they haven't revealed in gameplay elements.
At the session's conclusion, Patrice noted the importance of intuitive and organic controls in games, especially for the non-gamers of today. Jade ran another movie montage of the target possibilities that game developers have yet to hit. It will be an interesting future as developers try many different paths to expand video games' reach with both gamers and non-gamers."

Well...in true history the Hashashin or as we call them today: The Assassins, were hated by both the Muslims and the Crusaders. Saladin in particular was the target of two assassination attempts, the second one coming very close to killing him (RE: Warriors of God by James Reston Jr.). Their apparent calling card was a dagger and some pancakes(?) left on the pillow or table of a target, a sort of warning or mind game. The Assassins were primarily Persian, and hence, most of them were Shi'ites by religion. They had as much love for Sunnis as they did for the Christians, which is none. Their primary enemy in the Third Crusade were the Knights Templar, under the command of one Gerard de Ridefort, the vicious Master of the Temple who was feared and hated even amongst his own fellow Christians. The Hospitallers for example hated him to the core. The Assassins were excellent at playing both sides of the fence but they undoubtedly remained loyal to their Islamic counterparts, even if they had their reservations. The Dai of that era should be Rashid Al-Din Sinan, better known as the Old Man of the Mountain.

Actually, Ubisoft seems friendly with all three big gaming companies as seen by their releases of franchise favorites like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia. I have no doubt that there will probably be an Assassin's Creed (personally I prefer calling it Assassin) on the Wii. Chances are, it will once again be the best version graphics wise since nintendo seems on the up and up in terms of graphics. This is my opinion anyway

Well since the game isn't out yet, why don't we discuss what Ubi should or shouldn't do with this game based on their past masterpieces and muck-ups from the Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell series, namely POP since it is, like Assassin's Creed, a Middle-Eastern themed game. I'm a huge fan of Warrior Within (I know...I know), so most of what I suggest is probably based on it. Things Ubi should avoid with Assassin's Creed:
- Chariot racing/chasing sequences, ala POP:T2T. I thought they were okay but I preferred the Dahaka chase sequences in Warrior Within. Maybe they could replace them with horse riding, where the main character can just get on a horse a vamoose the hell outta fight.
-Over-rocking the soundtrack. A lot of POP purists who loved the Arabian/Middle-Eastern themed music in SOT hated the metal that took over in WW. Actually, being a metal fan, I loved the music since WW was my first POP, however my opinion changed after hearing the beautiful...beautiful middle-eastern music in T2T. It just fits. But a little Godsmack or Roadrunner in the fight sequences couldn't hurt much....right?
- Cheerful voice acting. I particularly disliked the voice of the Prince in T2T. Yuri Lowenthal I believe his name is. Once again, my judgement is based on the fact that I started POP with WW and hence, I believe that it was "The Game" of the POP series. Since this is a cold-blooded Assassin, they should get Robin Atkins-Downes to perform the role of the main character. I loved his Clint Eastwood-esque voice
-Love interests. Between sticking a knife between the ribs of a Templar and making pancakes of impending death, I don't see our Assassin friend finding time to squeeze love into his life, despite the numerous lovely ladies of either European or Arabic descent that are probably present in that era, I don't see our shadowy blade wielder playing an Arabic Romeo to some Juliet

From www.ign.com
Ubisoft Montreal revealed its next incredible project, Assassins: Creed, exclusively for PlayStation 3 at E3 this year, much to the delight of Sony console fans and to the dismay of Microsoft consoles fans. Ubisoft officially would not comment on a possible Xbox 360 version.
According to sources close to the company, however, there are potential plans for an Xbox 360 version at Assassins: Creed sometime in 2007. Additionally, Microsoft sources who asked not to be mentioned by name, claimed the demo, hidden behind closed doors at E3, was running on an Xbox 360 using a third-party USB PlayStation controller. The game system was hidden in a stand covered by a sheet. Again, Ubisoft officials would not comment.
Why have they stopped talking about it being on X360? The friggin game was first announced at X05 :o
I think they are just trying to keep sony happy fro some reason.
Anyway, OWNED if it was indeed running on X360 hardware at E3. The only good looking PS3 game and it was on Xbox hardware :D

PROBABLY.........THERE'S BEEN SO MUCH SPECULATION ABOUT IT, AND EVERYTIME IT'S BEEN ASKED, THEY BASICALLY DODGED THE QUESTION. THERE'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING IN THE WORKS. 'FARCRY' DOESN'T COUNT, BECAUSE THE 'PS2' COULDN'T HAVE RUN THE GAME ANYWAY (THEY TRIED, AND HAD TO DROP IT, BECAUSE IT LOOKED AND PLAYED LIKE CRAP) , AND IT'S NOT THE TYPE OF GAME 'NINTENDO' TYPICALLY WANTED FOR THE 'GC'.

while i'd really like it to be true, i really take that with a grain of salt. It's off some random website... i can find a website that says the holocaust never happened but that doesn't make it true.
i really hope it's true though because this is badass x67.

Again, Ubisoft officials would not comment
Just want to point out, it's has since been confirmed that the only thing AC was runing on at E3 was the PS3 PC Devkit. It's Ubisoft so a 360 version will probably happen, but the Xbox 360 thing is false.
STUFF FROM OPMUK
"He's like a bird of prey. We took that as a reference for all his moves, looks and attitudes."
"Game set between July and September of 1191... Three major cities will all be completely open to the player, each with it's own distinctive missions and atmosphere."
All the screens are from one of the cities called Acre, it's a oceanside city. There is a pic of the entire city in the magazine and it's awsome looking.
"In between each of the major cities lay two sprawling countrysides - A playground for horseback chases, fights with brigands, and even some of the primary assassinations."
"To preserve the idea of true multiple days of travel between diffferent cities, every major area will be separated by a fade out that takes you to the next area."
"Joining cravans will allow players to traverse distance between two places instantaniously, rather than making the trip manually."
"Beyond the major enviroments players will also visit both the cold and mountainous Assassin fortress of Masyaf, as well as the forested region that is the site for the climactic historical conflict that was the Battle of Arsuf."
Main characters name is Altair (pronounced al-tie-ear),an apprentice Assasin at the historic castle of Masyaf.
Altair translates as "eagle" from Arabic.
"thanks to the bank of over 4,000 animations that will govern his interaction with the world. Prince of Persia had 800 animations in comparison"
They discuss how the team wants people to have a different idea of what an Assasin is compared to modern day belief, they want to set the record straight.
"Even the way he kills is strange, each of his victims he treats with the utmost respect."
"Decades of religious war have left whole cities as melting pots of different peoples and faiths. Under the tutelage of the Assassin chief Sinan, Altair is tasked with helping to bring an end to the Crusade with as little loss of innocent life as possible."
"You're not just out killing people. You're solving a mystery."
"While every assassination will be unique in place, style, and challenge ther are three steps to each mission that will remain the same. First, players must locate the target in one of the sprawling cities or wilderness areas of the open game world... getting close will often necessitate carefully navigationg through hordes of city populace, or alternatley scaling buildings and slipping from roof to roof to reach the enemy."
"The second step is the leathal attack, players will reconnoiter the area around a target and discover any number of paths to get close, neutralize any protection, and finally kill the enemy in person."
"The moment of the kill is being meticulously designed to offer a wealth of emotional experiences for players in the brief seconds that it will lasts. Time will slow, and the action will zoom close, Excitement mixes with the gravity and horror of taking a human life, as you'll often bear witness to the fear and pain etched on the victims face."
"Finally every major assassination will have the dying man relay a piece of information to Altair about the larger conspiracy that is at the true heart of the game, pushing the story foward with the last words of the dying man."
"Altair will always try to make a point of offering respect and honor to him (as the enemy dies)"
"our reference (for the above ^) was when the German kill the American in Saving Private Ryan with the knife and he say's "shhh.. shhh" There is a moment between two human beings."
"When the deed is done the third act of a misssion is the escape, which can involve any combination of combat with guards, acrobatic roof running, or finding a way to hide or blend in with the surroundings and slip away, depending on the players preference"
"The full arc of once assassination can take anywhere from 10 minutes to a full hour, entirely based on players choices and decisions"
"The Scimitar game engine allowed us to have over 60 NPCs onscreen, each with individual AI and behaviours"
"Every NPC has a wealth of needs, each with a relative value. High social need might send a person to find someone to talk with. NPCs can develop thirst or hunger, and be drawn to a market fruit stand or fountain. Those that desire rest might look for a bench. Those who want entertainment might seek out a streetside piper, a juggler, or even an afternoon hangout at the town square"
"Finally some NPCs will be driven by a certain duty like a patrol, the protection of another NPC, or other set tasks."
"As you move among the tightly packed clusters of people, a pushing and balancing feature dictates both physics and the need for civil conduct with others. In other words, every NPC carries weight and force. Just as you wouldn't be able to run to the front of the stage at a musical concert, in the game the crowd will block your way. Run full tilt into a very large fellow, and you might knock him off his balance, but you will almost certainly be thrown to the ground as well."
"Beyond physical reaction from such a man as you might in real life, he may very well be angry or even violent. Meanwhile other passerby will stop and react, some will point and stare at your socially abnormal behaviour, others might join in the fight."
"Every character in the world will have multiple layers of tolerance for the actions of a player. Climb onto a roof in broad daylight on the main street and just like real life, people will pause and stare. Guards will act more forcefully and climb up after you in pursuit."
"NPC tollerence acts as a totally organic solution to the "wanted stars" dilemma of open world games."
"The only way to return tolerance to normal is to find a place to hide, enter a place of worship, assassin hideout, etc"
"Dynamic camera that alters based on player action. It will zoom in when moving slow, and out when moving fast, every behavior has a related camera, from horseback riding to climbing"
"Enviroments will also be filled with "NPC traps" as the designers called it, These are groups of like minded individuals who will act as a force to either impede you or your enemies, depending on their opinion of you."
"Beggars, prostitutes, monks and gossiping women, groups like these will all start out generally hostile to a person like the player who disrupts the natural order of the city"
"Beyond dozens of assassination missions that the players will undertake, they can also chose to attempt helping missions for the struggling populace."
"Aid the monks and the next time your being pursued they will help you hide amid their white robes, rather than breaking apart and pinpointing your location."
"Burly men might block your way to a side street if they don't know you, but split open if you aided them."
"Beggars may trip guards, citizens may even through rocks at the guards instead of you"
"There are no spinning blades or spouting flames to hinder progress in a realistic setting like this, that role is now reserved for the crowd which now doubles as camoflague."
"Assassin's creed seeks to offer the actuality of freedom, for that reason, every inch of the game world and enviromental geometry has been set up as part of a massive grid."
"Any object on this grid that sticks out more than five centimeters from its surroundings has been made interactive."
"Any ledge, rock, pole, box, window or countless other objects can all be leaped over, climbed into, or in many cases knocked over."
"levels designed so that any direction you go there will be excitement movement, also a plan that every 10 meters should offer at least once chance to interact meaningfully with the enviroment."
"The ground may demand quick dodges and blind turns into dark alleys, Players might jump between interconnected rooftops along a patchwork of thick planks. Countless paths are open to you at any step"
Some more, all typed up by Nodieza @ PS3 e-mpire:
"Even a simple low wall offers at least two options, run forward and press the legs button and you'll hurdle (jump) the wall. Press your arms button and Altair will throw down his hands on the wall and vault (Push himself up and over) the wall."
"The head button has Altair use his mind, in some cases it'll simply let you see in first person view.
"Sometimes it'll show you where the enemy is, but it also can give you a cinimatic view of an event unfolding in front of you."
"The head button also translates what the passerby is speaking, for authantisity the people will be speaking in their native tounge like Arabic, press the head button and it'll translate to english"
"Fights with guards will mostly leave you outnumbered, observation and timing will be primary tool for victory."
"Timed guardings will leave enemy momentarily open giving you enough time to finish him off."
"Sticking to realism means that neither you nor your opponent can take massive damage before collapsing"
"An auto block feature for Altair helps to simulate the idea that when the player fails to halt an attack, he is still able to ward off the blade, but will be exausted by the clumsy manuever."
"Only those final fatal blows against Altair will actually register as full on wounds leading to a game over."
"Most enemies will fall into one of three categories. Straight up fighters will face of head to head with you. Flankers will atempt to encircle you, or suprise you by leaping from a building interior at your back."
"This AI extends beyond the traditional trigger mechanism we so often see in action game enemies."
They go on to describe that in most games enemies will just attack to either they or their enemy dies.
"While some opponents in AC might adopt this attitude, others most certainly will not, reinforcing the concept that NOT every conflict must end in death."
"If you start a fight and you kill the toughest guy in the fight and two of his friends, the others will not just stand there as if they don't know what's going on. One may drop to his knees and beg for mercy. Another may run for help around the corner and bring reinforcements back. Still another may make a break for it, scaling a nearby ladder and platforming away across the roofs."
"Yes, while most the NPCs arent as acrobatic as Altair they can still use the enviromental grid just like you."
"Progression plays out as a mild degree of leveling, which finds him ranking up through the many tiers of the Assassins clan, A process which will change both his physical appearance and his weapons."
"The entire story of Altair will be framed by a character far in the future who will be looking back on his ancestor's exploits."
"This strange process of genetic memory will play out in an important way within gameplay. As the player moves through the world of the game, new situations and places are a mystery. Confidence in the memory will be low, and thus Altair's ability to survive injuries and death will be lower. With further exploration confidence in memory will grow and so will the plausability of survival"
".. an epic story that stretches from before human history to our prestent day in a way that has us spinning with anticipation."

WELL, FOR STARTERS, THE 'E3' FOOTAGE WAS 100% CG, SO IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER.......JUST MORE OF 'SONY'S "SMOKE AND MIRRORS" BULLS**T. THE ABOVE SCREENS LOOK EXACTLY LIKE.....IF NOT WORSE THAN......EVERY 'UE3' GAME WE'VE SEEN TO DATE. IN FACT, IT MIGHT BE USING A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE 'SPLINTER CELL 3-4' ENGINE, BECAUSE IT LOOKS IDENTICAL.
You never turn off, so somehow AC is now Sony smoke and mirrors Bull**** when you're simultaniously building the campaign for how the game isn't a SOny Exclusive, furthermore it was Ubi who made that, not Sony.
IN FACT, EVERYTHING THEY SHOWED AT 'E3', THAT WAS FIRST PARTY CONTENT OR SUPPOSEDLY EXCLUSIVE, HAD THE SAME FEEL AS LAST 'E3': LOOK AT HOW PRETTY OUR MOVIES ARE.......WE CAN'T SHOW YOU GAMEPLAY, BECAUSE OUR DEVELOPERS ARE STILL WAITING ON FINAL SPECS AND DEV KITS. :down:rolleyes:
Except not. They didn't havea ton, but you';d have to have a lame brain to think that their showing this E3 was anythign like last years in terms of gmaeplay shown off.

I'm curious as to the game system. Realism is the key factor of the game and they are using Parkour and other real-life styles to accomplish a sense of realism. Is it safe to assume that the game will be a third person adventurer along the lines of Prince of Persia? Also, in one interview, Jade Raymond (who is pretty hot) mentioned that in the game, the player to go into FP view ala Splinter Cell. Does this mean that the game will be blend of the two titles? As seen from the trailers, sneaking and running away seems to be a major part of the game. I'd love to see more from-game images that display the concept of the game

It was as official as you can get when all signs are pointing to them trying to fabricate a timed exclusivity deal. I'd say the plan will fall through as it did with Prince of Persia (though that was still active for Europe as I remember) and I don't even think they bothered with SplinterCell: Chaos Theory.
Anyways, when was the last time Ubisoft made a console exclusive? Farcry: Instincts and Ape Escape don't count. Farcry just couldn't work on the PS2, and I bet it will be on the PS3 (complete with the same Xbox graphics) before too long, probably with another three hours of gameplay and an even longer game title to make that apparent.
Going by their E3 showing I would think Sony would take a timed exclusivity deal for whatever price, especially now that GTA is releasing simultaneously for the PS3 and the 360, I don't think the Prince of Persia games sold well enough for them to put that financial weight into. I believe each one sold around 500,000 copies for each platform, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube.
It's up in the air, as far as timed exclusives go, but it will definitely be on the 360. It's 99.9% guaranteed.

I want this game too. I really like when Ubi gets a new IP going (or their own rendition of an existing one, a la PoP or Farcry), they just do them so well.
I only wish they'd drop the "Clancy" brand name, as Clancy doesn't make contributions any longer. I think his last contribution was telling them there's no "night vision/infrared" combo headset. That was three games ago and they used one anyways.
WHF you should go to gamefaqs.

Now I'm like an old man who can't fight the fight. I'm the rock that has been softened and smoothed by the waters of the Hype.

But one very nice thing said that we should be like water, because it has no form.
It adapts itself to any recipient, like a cup or a glass.
The waves crash on the rocks and it forms around them, eventually wearing them down.
The way I see it, he tried to say that we should be able to adapt ourselves to any problem we might encounter, and if we have a free mind, we'll be able to overcome it.

The Price I have no problem with at first I did but then I got over it but the fact is with the PS3 Launch Games coming out with 360 Versions & the fact that I am not into HD or MGS & KH I see no reaosn on getting a PS3 right now & my opinion will stay this way. I buy Systems for THE GAMES I WANT TO PLAY not just to have the System.

Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven.
It's a movie about the Crusades, and Jerusalem and stuff.
Now I'm going to expect Balian (the main character) to be all stealthy and acrobatic like Tristan, when all he does is strategize to defend a city and kill people with a sword.

Tycho from Penny arcade wrote this, and I dunno I kinda agree with him.
Just for trivia's sake, I should mention that despite the "middle ages" motif, Assassin's Creed is clearly set in a science fiction context. This is something I've been trying to make sense of every since I saw it, the June 2006 Game Informer helps make some sense of it. There's hints of it in the trailer I mentioned, futuristic scan-line effects, but I had written them off to teaser reel flash and didn't absorb what they were trying to communicate. I could be mistaken, I don't think I am, but when the character takes a tremendous amount of damage very pronounced video distortions are present. And when you die - get this - when you die, a pristine white interface takes over the screen, and you are looking up into a woman's face. I did not expect that in my sneaky Crusades game.

Is he suggesting that the game is basically the Matrix? I don't remember the video camera effects he talks about, but is it really that strange to see white light after dying? And the woman is probably a healer or nun-type character.

I remember that, yeah, but not the distortion. I think it's just a cool effect. Similar to how Battlestar Galactica or Arrested Development are filmed in a cinema verite style, but there isn't actually an in-story camera following everyone around.
CONFIRMED FOR XBOX360 AND PC.

Translation
During the IDEF 2006, Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin' s Creed was currently under development for Xbox 360 and PC, in more than one version besides the PlayStation 3 one already announced. The owners of Microsoft's console will be able them to thus step into the shoes of Altair at the height of the Third Crusade. More information soon, especially concerning a possible temporary exclusiveness for Sony's future machine.
