He wouldn't do that little 'camp' act if the kid wasn't there. I agree psychotic is closer to it. After watching the trailer a few times, I think Spacey will be one the best thing about this movie. Very imposing when he's in the mood. Hackman was never imposing or projected a sense of power and authority like Spacey does.

I don't think he's psychotic he just likes to do bad things just like superman likes to do good things.

I like what i've seen so far of Spacey. He came off as really evil and psychotic. But really, it's hard to judge from a few lines in the trailer. Most of what I've heard is that Spacey's Luthor is really sadistic and evil, and rather scary. We'll have to see when the movie comes out though, I guess.

Huh, to be honest, in that scene with Lois, I thought he was campier than Hackman... Itīs not even the lines, itīs all the over-the-top mannerisms... Check Luthor in Superman TAS, for instance, heīs a cold and calculated villain, he never goes jumpy like that, THATīS a menacing Lex Luthor.

And if you want to see psychotic, thatīs what you will see. Let me take the example of Hannibal. Anthony Hopkins said his inspiration for playing the character was Hal 9000, the character was so scary and dangerous because he had this calm, smooth and controlled voice behind his murderous acts. Hannibal is so scary because heīs so in control, thereīs so much method in his madness, he always seems two steps ahead of you, like heīs never gonna make a mistake, a jumpy and screamy psycho is the one who loses it, who will be irrational and do stupid things and get caught.

Routh's voice is perfect for supes and clark, couldn't be more happy with the choice to cast him as far as that goes. I'm not liking the line about not being "who I am...keeping secrets". whether it's the dry robotic delivery or the line itself, I haven't dcided yet. I need to see it in context.

exactly...most people don't think about the scene he's in when he's joking around with Lois Lane. he's obviously kidnapped or revealed something terrible to Lois, so he's getting excited that his 'masterplan' is actually being executed. i'm GLAD that Lex has a sense of humor...i wouldn't want Lex to be robotic and serious all the time.
i think it's a great contrast to the calm and inanimate Magneto. i'm glad Singer's allowing his villains to be different from one another...
Spacey's Lex is great. Why would you want the calm collected Lex again? Its already been done on TAS.
This is a totally new interpretation on Lex. Hes criminally insane, which is pretty awesome.
Hes unpredictable and who knows what may happen..

My doctor told me insane's just a legal term to use when you don't want to be responsible for what you do. Lex would neveer declare that, I think. He's proud to be an a$$hole, the greatest crimminal mind or whatever he said in stm.

Remember when hackman walked over to his ho after she complained about one of his missles going to kill her mom, and he just pointed to his watch and shook his head at her. That was ****ing bloody lovey to see lex do. I loved it. I hope spacey watched that and incoporated such understated disregard for anybody in New Jersey. He didn't need to yell "Nope you ho! she's practically dead already and I don't care lol" just the relaxed nother day's work attitude said it all.

I just realised Luthors whole scene with Lois is a jab at the old Superman comics ans serials...
Lois would always get caught up in Luthors plans and Lois would always say 'Superman will never let you get away with this'.
I think the scene is more poking fun at the old comics and tv series than anything else now.

I think you're right. And I think it's comforting to know that while Bryan obviously has a lot of respect for the character and the history, he's not afraid of the occasional joke at the expense of that history. That's the mark of someone who's truly secure as a filmmaker and a fan.

My understand of Lex can best be summed up by a comment from Willem Dafoe. When asked if he prefered playing heroes or villains, he replied:
"Don't make no difference. Everyone thinks they're righteous."
That's how I understand Lex.

There was nothing wrong with Gene Hackman's Lex - left to his own devices he was by turns funny and menacing. It's all in the eyes. The problem was the fact that he was surrounded by too much buffoonery to be a credible threat.

Lowest Point of the Trailer - Kevin Spacey ACTING LIKE GENE HACKMAN acting like Lex Luthor but with a 1970s-cheese-style acting...back before they took villain material like this seriously!

if you guys watch STM closely, take away the cheesy music, otis, the weird clothes, he's actually not a bad lex. it's just too much extra crap they put around great characters.
As anticipated, Spacey is playing this role in the style of a camp "bwooh-hah-hah-hah-hah...!" pantomime villain ("pantomime" being a reference that US readers may not get).
Check out Dustin Hoffman as the eponymous Captain in Steven Spielberg's 1991 Peter Pan film Hook for an idea of what to expect.

In the first couple of scenes he's playing it great, very sinister, very villianous like. I don't really see the campiness of it, just Spacey having fun with the character. I personally think Spacey will be great. And besides, we only saw a few seconds of him.

Heh my Dad viewed it and said "I liked Gene Hackman's Lex better, Kevin Spacey's is a little too dark."
:)
i personally think John sheas Lex luthor from Lois is clark is the best version, but spacey lex seems funny and interesting.

it's a different Luthor altogether. Spacey's Luthor is definitely the craziest Luthor I've ever seen, but I love how he played it. he is a threat because, being bats#!t f***in loco, he's just unpredictable.

I don't want some pre-crisis laughing clownish Super-villain.
I want a truely evil Lex with a icy stare that can crush by the sheer power behind his name. I want the machinating villain and industrialist that is in control of all his human faculties and ultimately hateful of Superman usurping his place as the reciever of glory.
I don't want the Hackman Lex but Singer has delivered just that Ugg.

As I already said, thats not what I wanted to see in him with the trailer.

Gene Hackman while being a good Lex, played him as a very sane villian. Hackman Lex knew exactly what he was doing at all times, and he just didn't care how many people got hurt. He could really care less, and the people dieing really didn't matter to him. All that mattered was if his plan was going to work or not. He didn't care if the people lived or died. It didn't effect him one way or the other.
Kevin Spacey Lex is completely sadistic! The prospect of billions of people dieing actually excites him! His demenor and expressions clearly tell you that this is a man that has gone off the deep end. All the years in prison have just made the man more oblivious to the harm he inflicts. It has gotten to the point that he loves hurting people!
For the first time in any medium, this Lex Luthor actually seems dangerous to me. He actually scares me. He is a psychopathic genius. I love this Lex Luthor!

While I"m not a fan of Hackman's portrayal of Luthor, I'm looking foward to Spacey's take on the character.
I wasn't 'threatened' by Hackman's Lex at all. I hope that Spacey will rule all.

Spacey kinda reminded me of Rosenbaums portrayal of Lex in the episdoe, "Shattered" when he was going nutso...specifically the scene when he confronts Lionel in Luthorcorp with a gun.
Oh and another thing...they're still pronouncing it LuthER in Superman Returns?

I've said it once and I shall say it again-
Spacey (Luthor) is the new Mcdiarmid (Palpatine). Twisted and evil
Go easy on me. I'm new. :O
Ha I like that.
Cuz Palpatine was calm and collected sometimes, but sometimes he would go fricking crazy in Star Wars 3....just like Luthor, sometimes calm but sometimes crazy.
Good comparison

comparing singer's work to geroge's prequel movies? I heart that not.
The emperor lost every ounce of calm and collected evilness he built up once he started all that cartoonish baffoonery during the yoda fight. He became a clown, a power ranger villian. MAKE MY DEATH STAR GRooooooooooOW! oh god don't let that happen to lex.

Well, it seems Singer is really going for a pre-crisis homage, makes sense if he's taking the old movies and also the really old costume and the clownish Lex.
Disappointing however. I guess a cute/shy/clumsy Clark Kent and a crazy and over the top expressive villain (See Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey as Two Face and Riddler urrrrrk!!!!) is more appealing to audiences? I HOPE NOT!

I guess you could use those examples. Or you could also use Joker and Green Goblin crazy type villains. Hell, even Doc Ock was pretty over the top.

Here's what I got from Spacey's portryal in the trailer:
Some of the most sadistic, twisted serial killers in history did not, on first glance, seem very crazy at all. In fact, they were often charming and sophisticated--only when they are set off do you really see the monster within.
In the first scenes, he seems very calm and collected--not exactly "evil," just very driven and cunning. In fact, in the beginning of the Lois and Lex scene, he seemed very good natured--only at the mention of Superman did Lex just snap and yell at her.
He is a very evil man, but he has enough charm to make it seem less aparent, and it's only the mention of Superman where he really goes berserk.
The character could have been plenty 'insane' without Spacey having to hop, skip and almost break into dance...gimme a break.
Lex's insanity, to me anyways, was his singular goal to destroy superman...no matter what he had to do and how many people were slaughtered in the process - screaming at lois and a kid, giggling...this is sheer camp-factor and nothing else.

The point is that the Joker and the Green Goblin are supposed to be over the top borderline insane. So is Doc Ock to a degree (and his presentation in Spider-Man 2 was pretty bad).
This is Lex Luthor - possibly the smartest human in control of all his faculties. He has no need for the whole song and dance routine and giddy maniac behavior. I don't want the Gene Hackman characterization. I'm not decided on the Clark yet, but I suppose people will want the pre-crisis clumsy mild-mannered Clark routine and I can live with that.

Oh great, didn't Luthor learn anything from Superman I???
Why is it the same plot again??? Oh gee, not the stupid going to blow off a part of the land mass of the United States (when it is impossible since it is connected to the earth's crust) evil plot again. Even the original Superman's plot was more realistic because it dealt with the San Andreas Fault.
He just decided to go with the other side of the country this time to create his private real estate instead of dropping California into the ocean to make his land beachfront property.

He's just being a hedonist, and enjoying having the upper hand. It's not camp, and he's not going to be dancing around in every scene. Get over it. It's pretty much right in character, and Spacey's interpretation certainly works in context.
