View Full Version : Batman BEGINS chest sculpt. Some Pics..

I guess when you get the BEGINS bug it doesnt easily go away. :)

These are pretty old. Much has changed so I dont mind posting them now. Total is about 5 days work to this point.

Based on the information publicly known about Bale, we sourced someone who 'more or less' fit his size, weight and body form. Full life casts were taken of this guy and when complete, pics will follow of him wearing it too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/UniversalDesigns2/croppedone.jpg

The details on the Begins suit are deceptive at best. Not an easy form to decipher, but a straight forward sculpt once things look clear from all angles.
It's getting there...but I dont expect to finish it for a long time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/UniversalDesigns2/croppedtwo.jpg

Feedback welcome.
Stay tuned....more to come....

Enjoy.

Actually this is the 3rd one now.
How time flies. I remember the collaborating efforts by many here to help me get it right the first time...and this now my the 3rd attempt. We had some fun back then.

Third attempt? Very cool. Yes it was a lot of fun, especially when we had no real clue as to what the suit actually looked like, I enjoyed all the different speculative sketches, (some of which were eerily accurate) of the costume.
BTW David, I was wondering, did you ever come up with your own original design for a Bat-costume?

Oh yea....Some of the speculative sketches and simple remarks turned out to be pretty darn close. Fun times. Looking forward to it all over again with the next movie.
I've been so busy that any custom work I've been wanting to do for myself has all be shelved. This one I want to finish up and get out of the way asap but other custom suits and stuff are going to have to wait until we get a whole bunch of current contracts dealt with and out the door.
With some luck I'll have more progress pics here to show. Got a lot done this weekend on it so more to come...:)

All you need is a bit of drive and patience. Give sculpting a try. You never know what you'll be able to do unless you give it a shot. It's not like I woke up one day and was able to do things like this, none of us were. Trust me, if you want to learn....and you have passion....it will come. It's only as complicated as you make it. Heck, I still run into all sorts of problems on a daily basis.
In any case, I appreciate the vote of confidence. :) Hopefully you'll dig the final piece when complete.
Sure feels good to be seeing some of the familiar faces around here.
I think we're going to have a lot of fun as the hype builds up for BatsII.

I'd love to be able to try something like this, it's just that I'd have no idea where to start. Would you ever consider creating some kind of tutorial for people with practically no experience in this type of thing? Perhaps a video of you creating one or something? That would be amazingly helpful.

what clay do you use?

DAVIDYR1
06-14-2006, 10:03 AM
what clay do you use?

I use 2 different types of clays when sculpting. Tuckers Water Based clay...water based meaning it needs to stay moist or it will dry up and crack into pieces...

OR as in this case, I use Chavant NSP Soft Clay. I exclusively use Chavant oil clays. They are by far the best, with more options and types of clays to suit anyones needs or use. Not to mention they are a great company to deal with.

This is the back of their cataloge. I was extremely pleased (and even more greateful:up:) to see that they added a pic of my Predator head sculpt on their catalogue...right under the Batmobile no less....:)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/catalogue.jpg

If you guys are scuplting...or wanting to give this stuff a try I suggest contacting Chavant for a distributer near you....their clay practically sculpts itself.

I use soft clays because I started over 20 years ago with water clay and that is really soft stuff, so the transition to oil clays for me meant the softest possible.

I dont know how well a softer clay would work for an action figure and fine details like that. You may want to try Y2Klay from Chavant for that. However, try contacting them and see if they can send off some samples to you. You then could decide what clay is best to start with.

Good luck!!!

Well..he's Done!

The back needed a little more tweaking so at the time of the pics I hadnt primed it yet. This is the sculpture, as I've started spraying it.

Spraying the sculpture...found a good dark primer.

Finish with primer...clear coat...flat black spray for the entire torso...gloss black for the chest bat then mold time.

I hope you like it.

This is the finished clay sculpture. I've begun to prime it but the back wasnt 100% done yet...it is now.
Once the sculpture is ready, I take molds of it and run off wearable rubber armor parts.
Glad you like it. New updates shortly.

The chest is finally ready to mold, so I thought I'd give this a quick update.:)

Been tweaking and adjusting it for a while. This is still the clay sculpture but sprayed black. The last shot of color is high gloss black because it allows me to see any remaining imperfections in the sculpt and to tool them out before I start molding it. No clear coat at this stage either.

I threw my cowl and toy belt on it to see how it would all look....
I'll also try a few more pics with the gauntlets too.

I'll have a few more up by today. Going under the silicone this afternoon...FINALLY.

Here are the last pics I took of it before getting it under silicone. The gauntlets you see on the sculpt are just quick slush casts and by no means perfect but I did use them regularly to help with proportions. Below you'll see a few pics of what they look like cast up properly.

Cool Spawn suit.

Sure...no problem.
The Begins suit is also supposed to look like armor but we all know it was rubber.
Azbat's could be done the same. In the end as long as it 'looks' like armor or the drawings, that's all that really matters.
I'm also working on an Iron Man suit and that's certainly 'supposed' to be all armor but it wont be in the end for what I'm doing.
Should be cool!

Differnt forms of rubber give you different results. Sure, Iron Man needs to look like some kind of crisp metal alloy but there are ways of communicating that look without going the route of the Stormtrooper armor or things similar to that.
Robocop is a great example for instance...and sure, there were vac formed hard plastic parts to that but there were also plenty of cast rubber elements to that suit.
Remember...it's how it looks and how it functions above all else...how you make it is secondary...make it look like metal....without it having to be that way is the trick to our industry. :)

David

Cobblepot
09-19-2006, 10:36 AM
Robocop, yes that was a great costume. The black was "rubber" right and the armour was the hard plastic.

Finally got around to finishing and demolding the sculpt.

The mold picked up everything just as it should have...glossy bat chest logo and flat, matt finished for the rest of the torso.
Here's a quick pic of what the finished chest logo looked like...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/Universaldesigns3/2006_0912chdneblk40005.jpg

And now the inside of the silicone mold..just dont mind my finger print....LOL...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/UDesigns1/bw2p.jpg

The entire costume is black, but the batshop had a cool idea to give the suit 2 different finishes so that light would reflect off of it differently.
The torso casting is nearly ready to be shown...with some luck I get that exact same effect in the final casting too. :)

Hello,

I have a few questions for the OP.

1) Do you plan on building all the pieces required for a full and complete suit except boots (I am guessing you are but I want to make sure).

2) Do you plan on making these suits available for purchase by the public i.e. me?

I realize you probably have no idea of what the price would be as the suit is not complete but I would be interested in knowing these few small details as I have been searching for a high-quality batsuit for two years now!

Thank you,

I will have photo updates very soon.

The suit will be complete including the boots, gloves, undersuit, cape, all rubber armor and possibly the belt. I will make the belt also but am far to busy to dedicate time to that currently so that just might get done in the future.
I'm in no hurry because this is not going to be for sale or trade or anything like that. As much as I appreciate your interest here unfortunately I just dont sell any of my Bat related items.

David, if I decide to become a superhero some day, would I be able to get you to make me a costume?

Just as long as you get your superpowers from somewhere else...my rubber suits arn't really bullet proof...LOL

OK...got my first 'test pull' from the mold.
Why a test pull? Well the material is injected into the mold, there are no open areas to view inside of it so to be able to have weight ratio for future castings I have to go through a test process to determine that. That was a little 'wordier' than it should have but I think you get the idea...

It's NOT mounted. You'll also see some fingerprints because I demolded it...trimmed it a bit, not even all of it..LOL and wanted to see how it all looked.
Also, the belt is the Toys R Us kids belt. It's small so it's going to look weird because it just doesnt cover as much of that area as it needs to but eh, it's all I have for now.

It fits like a glove!! It forms to the body and flex's beautifully. The whole thing has a sandy mat finish to it while the bat logo is glass smooth. I guess I should have polished it before taking the pics but eh...sue me for being excited..LOL!

The cowl and chest are cast from 2 different rubbers so they do look different in color. The cowl and gauntlets are just quick reject casts I used throughout the sculpting of the torso for proportions and positioning of different details.

What I'm thrilled at is how the relationship of the base of the cowl and the torso bat logo is properly spaced.

I cant wait to attach this to an undersuit, punch the collar clip holes and mount the whole thing up with cape away I go.

Is it wrong to be happy? I hope not..LOL...My 3rd Begins Chest sculpt...a few years later and finally I'm as happy as I was the first time I made a rubber batsuit back in 89.

The belt is a good size and pretty accurate. It seems to go well with the torso piece.

More to come...ohh, much more. :)

I made undersuit patterns for a third party, so yes, in a sense I am 'working' on one. I'm in no rush to mount it though so I really dont know when that will happen. All in good time I guess. :)

Oh and here's a cool pic showing the comfort and flexibility of the armor I made.
