I was buying Spidey comics when the Black costume was introduced, and while I didn't hate it, I didn't think it was the right look for Spidey and was glad that he went back to his red'n blues about 6 issues later.
Though when he wore the black suit that the Black Cat made for him, it was a rough 3 years that followed... because Spidey is iconic enough that you should never change his looks, same as Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman. There can be temporary costumes for the sake of a story, but never anything permanent.
Amazing Spider-Man #301 had a sweet, sweet long-awaited cover... in my opinion.

I agree that I don't think it's the right 'look' for Spidey, but the black costume represents something more than what it is: it represents the golden age of Spider-Man, IMO. The stories written in that time are what I consider to be his best.

It's funny... the pre-black costume era was the Roger Stern run, arguably the third best run in ASM history (behind Stan's & Marv Wolfman's), yet the Tom Defalco era, which was basically the black costume time, was pretty decent. I wouldn't say "great", but really decent.
I will admit that Spidey's writers haven't been all that good in nearly 20 years. :(

My god... the creation of the HobGoblin, the epic battle between Spidey & the Juggernaut, the kid who collected Spider-Man, the long-awaited return of Mary Jane (she was absent from the book for about 5 years prior to his writing her back in... she took off after Peter proposed to her the first time), some great insights on the origin of the Vulture, a great story involving the original Tarantula, Will'O the Wisp & that evil corporation, Brand, another one with Cobra & Mr.Hyde...

Weird coincidence, because around the time of the release of the black suit, i was planning to send Marvel some sample pages (I was interested in being a comic artist back then), and I came up with the brainflash of giving Spidey a new costume- a black one with a large white spider- only similar to the Tarantula's and just a costume- no alien life form. So I was pretty stunned to here that they were giving spidey a new suit and was even more shocked to see the cover.
But- about the suit itself. I thought it looked cool, but not revolutionary. And I was happy when the original red & blues returned.

Actually, even though Marv Wolfman wrote that fantastic story, the first appearance of the Burglar since AF #15 was written by Len Wein in ASM #170.
But his next appearance, ASM #193, was written by Wolfman, who arguably has THE BEST run on Amazing since Stan Lee.

I remember the first time I saw Spidey in it. My mom just bought me some Secret Wars action figures, from the 80's, and the black suit Spider-Man was one of them. Being a little kid I always thought for the longest time that they were two different Spider-Men. Heh.

I started buying Amazing Spider-Man monthly around issue #183 (I had bought it here and there between 1975 & 1978), but in 1978, I started "collecting".
Wolfman had started his run in ASM #185, and man, could that guy tell a story. No arcs BS, just good ol' storytelling with sub-plots becoming main stories while other sub-plots develop. He had a great characterization of J.Jonah Jameson going (with his nervous breakdown and all) until Denis O'Neil came on board (as the highly touted "Batman" writer") and wrecked all that development IN ONE ISSUE with a "mean machine"  built by Dr. Jonas Harrow.

I couldn't agree more. Who doesn't crack up when reading "when the commuter cometh" or Spidey being forced by a nursing home resident to sweep up broken glass or... I could go on and on, but the point is the storylines, the humor and even the art where at their pinnacle during that time.
