There's a bunch of trailers for superman and 5 tv spots already. I don't remember Begins getting this much promotion. Does anyone know?

This is Superman's first movie in like 20 years. They're trying to make it a big deal.

but my theory with promotion is that if a movie has a ridiculas amount a promotion, the movie sucks. of course, this isnt the case for all movies. Spiderman had loads of hype and it was a pretty good film. Same with all of the Batman films except B@R of course...

But then theres the films with overloaded promotion that suck. The Hulk blowed, worst superhero film ever. Batman and Robin, I wont even go there.
X3, from the looks of it, wasnt very good. (maybe im wrong though, as i havent seen it)

Im not saying superman returns is going to suck, im just stating history.

Begins was awesome, and to tell to truth, i think supes is getting about the same amount of promotion as Batman Begins.

No , Warner Bros. is promoting Superman Returns, the same way they did for BATMAN BEGINS .

Personally, I haven't seen any TV spots or trailers yet, it seemed about the same just before Begins came out.

I read in a Superman Returns board people complaining about the exact opposite thing.

I've only seen two tv spots and no trailers (in the theater). Beats Batman Begins though, I only saw ONE tv spot for that movie and no trailers (in the theater). Maybe I just don't watch alot of television?

perhaps, I saw lots of Begins spots on TV and quite a few trailers in the movies. Begins had a suttle marketing approach though, they relied on word of mouth (which was needed to erase Batman and Robin memories) and I'd say it worked

It is getting more promotion......Batman Begins didn't have any tv spots air until about 2 weeks before it's release. It was very under the radar, remember how much people were complaining saying about the lack of promotion? And we kept hearing that they were going with the "word of mouth" thing....and it worked, so there ya go.

Superman Returns is a much more marketable film.....add to the fact that the previous Batman films had been promoted like crazy, Begins needed to go under the radar and not be a total "in your face" attempt b/c people have seen so much of him.

It's Superman's return....and he's like the Spider-Man of the Marvel Films. Kids, Families, Adults can all dig it....and he can be marketed with Fast Food and all that other crap....and it works. Batman's more like the X-MEN franchise. Dark, and not as easy to market simply b/c of most of the themes.

So....yeah, it looks like it's being marketd more than Begins.......but for very very good reason.

I dunno why this is even a point of discussion really. Did any of us wonder if Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Harry Potter, or any other WB film was marketed better than BB when it came out? Every movie is different, every situation is different, and they're marketed as such.

Me? I'd like the new Batflicks to do big numbers and be the movies everyone likes to watch. I'd like to hear a Batflick make 50 mill on the first day, rather than for the whole weekend like BB did.

But most fans dont want that. And WB is taking that to heart. Supes, on the other hand, is getting bigger promotion because it can reach a bigger audience

Batman was different. WB was still reeling from Batman & Robin and really wanted to underplay this movie or save money on the marketing.

Exactly. Man, I wanna be proud enough as a Batfan to say that my hero's flicks make killings at the box office.

A movie for the masses dosent mean camp. If fans expand their minds a bit they'd realize.

There's NO reason Batman cant do numbers like Spider-Man. Especially since it was THE superhero franchise in the late 80's and 90's

But the sequel's gonna be darker and for fans only.

Not that i'm worried about the darker part

It was no secret that Begins was subtly marketed - WB was dealing with a lot of baggage from the previous 2 films which left a bad taste in everyones mouths. Like someone said, Superman is the most recognized comic book character, hasn't been around in 20 years so of course WB is gonna go all out and blow their load on it.

The BB marketing and SR marketing feel very similar to me.

The only thing I'm missing is the big long sneak peak at the end of an episode of Smallville.

Yeah it is also being horribly promoted the same way Batman Begins was.I fail to understand why Batman Begins was not the same kind of all out promotions that Batman 89 or the spiderman movies got. That just shows that a not so good comicbook movie can do great at the box office with clever promotions.Batman 89 had like 1 year promotions going for it with posters in the theaters a year before its release and you could not go anywhere in public without seeing batman commercial tie ins everywhere you went, same with spiderman.Bot so with Begins and not so with Superman Returns either. For those reasons I think it will suffer the same fate as Batman Begins did and just barely do over 200 mill.

Suffer?

Batman Begins was a huge success.....the only thing it suffered from was the crap that came before it 6 years earlier.

Batman is a tough character to market, especiallly a film like Begins. I mean....how do you market a film that is a mix between action/drama/suspense/thriller with a character that stupid ass parents THINK is just for kids??

It's impossible to market a film like that on the level of SR without some kind of backlash.....especially thse parental groups that think any little thing will screw they're kid up for life.

Superman Returns is like the Spider-Man franchise.......it's really a family film.

Batman Begins is more like X-MEN or X-2 (Last Stand....no..) where it's darker, grittier and much more somber......it's not easy to just stick that on ceral boxes, soda cans, and everything else b/c it could seem a little heavy.

Plus.....Batman is a franchise that nearly died......it's best to sneak back into the films biz and be a surprise.....instead of crash landing into it.

Hey, it worked.

You gotta consider that Begins was more riskier because of Batman & Robin and clearly from the outset when developing the project they were more concerened about credibilty (Casting Bale, getting vetran actors, having Goyer look at Batman titles for inspriation). Plus the Box Office had that slump so they were treading waters carefully. They succeeded and now its more about creating a credible franchise that's stands the test of time rather than hoping for a Spider-man or a Batman 89 craze. Besides WB didnt need to put all there money in one franchise to bank (Harry Potter, other DC titles etc) so that one was for the fans and showed they could make good comic titles (which was a problem early on)

With Superman it's easier for accessiablity because of lightness but even when it was in development hell there was always an intention to make it a bigger more promoted blockbuster. They can also thank Begins and Marvel titles like Spidey and X-Men for making the greenlight more available and sponsors help promote it.
