The Question

Former GCPD cop. Got beat up by Killer Moth and Firefly, left the force on disability, and became a private detective.

Bard originally appeared in Detective Comics #392, of 1969. During the new "One Year Later" process he's shown in Gotham with no idea of the return of Batman. In Detective Comics #818, Batman frequently mentions how he's only a creature of the night, and how Gotham should be protected during the day.

Later in the issue, we see him visiting Bard's apartment late at night with a job offer in mind. He offers to pay him weekly to work during the daylight hours with different cases that come up, even saying that Bard himself is a decent detective. Bard's first task was to investigate the whereabouts of Orca. During his investigation, he runs into the Tally Man who then shoots Jason in the arm.

Bard was at one time a love interest for Barbara Gordon (around the late 70s). Pick up the Batgirl: Year One tpb for some "early" appearances of him.

I like Bard.....he's a cool cat. Plus, it makes sense....Batman needs another pair of hands to work by day.

He's been around for that long? I thought he was just a guy Robinson created for the back-ups for his arc.

His first ever appearence was in issue #392 of Detective Comics. And then was shown again in other stories throughout both the 70's and 80's of the same book.

I have to go soon, but hey Bats, I got a question for you. Was Bard ever romantically linked to anyone I'd know? Cause he seemed to be one hell of a pimp by sleeping with a woman who had murdered her own husbad. :o

Thanks for the help again!

When Bard was with the GCPD at some point he worked along Commissioner Gordon, and met Barbara who he had begun seeing. The two later developed a strong relationship and he asked her to marry him. After "The Killing Joke" though, she felt that she wasn't safe when surrounded by him and broke off their engagement.

I think on the issue before the latest one in OYL there is a story about him at the end. Sort of like a backstory I guess you could say so that us fans learn about who he is.

Yeah, he does seem like a cool cat and plus it looks like he's a bit of womanizer so mabye him and bats could go out picking up some ladies.

bard was in some early issues of birds of prey where he was with black canary while they were being held as hostages/slaves on some tropical island by a crime boss. i remember him losing his eyesight when either a gun or explosion went off near his face. i'm not sure how he got his vision back, but aside from his past relationship with barbara, there seemed to be a bit of sexual tension between he and dinah during that arc. anyone else remember this?

He's pretty cool.....his witty, and ballsy. That thing with the widow, where he gets offered the job from Batman......priceless. He just pwned that chick....in more ways than one.

Yes. That's when the two began seeing one another, and became very close.
