For me, thatīs not even a question...Batman, easily...extremely easy.
Not to bash the Man of Steel, but Batman is, tied with Spider-Man, my favorite comic book character.
The 2nd (being that Spidey and Bats are tied in the #1) is the X-Men.

One can make a strong argument for either. Personally, I prefer Superman, but that's not taking anything away from Batman. He's awesome as well.
Actually, every hero stands on their own, and illustrates their own sense of greatness and their approach or style with the way they deal with things is probably what attracts one to a particular hero.

I have to go with Batman, not just because he is a darker, more metally developed character, but also because he was one of the first superheroes I ever saw.
Superman is about tied with Spidey for number 2, in my opinion.

Because of the differing qualities of both characters...I'm torn.
Batman represents the dark city he dwells in and the crime that runs rampant within it. He's a human being that made the conscious decision to go out and make sure what happened to him, happens to no one else. And nothing can top his rogues gallery (except for the rogues in the Flash)
Superman represents all that is good about mankind despite being an alien. He's THE hero, all that power, and raised in Kansas to understand right and wrong. Some would say he's the most "human" superhero out there.
I enjoy reading both characters for entirely different reasons, so I'm going to have to claim: TIE!

I like Batman much more, however in good faith I cannot vote against Superman, he is the first and the best. Without there is not comic industry and many more people know him worldwide...in fact "Superman" has become part of how we identify men of great strength and ability, it has become a word in it's own right and most importantly the word "superhero" is a derivative of his name.

The Batman

I cant choose, really.
Batman, Is a great hero because, instead of becoming some rich idiot, or becoming a messed up psycho after his parents death, he decides to honor his parents and stand up for the city they loved most. He makes goals and tries to accomplish them. He spent over a decade of his life to shape himself for this difficult mission. He's intelligent, Dark, complex, obsessive, and focused. But for all that, he still has compassion, and deep beneath his darkness lies the hero. Not to mention, he has great vehicles and gadgets, an excellent rogues gallery, the greatest collection of femme fetales, and is pretty much the most accessible hero other than spider-man.
Superman, however, is THE superhero. Period. He is the Ultimate representation of superheroes. He represents the potential that mankind can one day achieve. Supes and Clark Kent represent the idea that, theres a hero in alll of us, hidden behing our "Everyday" selves. He has the greatest comic book origin ever. How many characters can say their backstories can be compared to moses and jesus? How many characters can say they've touched peoples lives like Superman? Superman simply trancsends comics. He's an ICON.
And thats why I like both. People concern themselves with liking "Relatable" characters. Me, i like characters who can...i dunno....INSPIRE. Batman teaches us, IMO, that no matter how ****ed up you are, you can become someone who achieves great things, and Superman teaches us you can change the world if you use your abilities for good.

This shouldn't even be close, it's Superman by far. Anyone else thinking otherwise doesn't know what the hell they are talking about.
If you don't believe me do some damn research, Superman has had countless cartoon series, tv series, comics, movies, plays, hell even musicals made about him.
Superman is a worldwide icon, the only cartoon character that is more poplar than him would be Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny. That's it. Period.

Me too...but on the plus side, it means I'm not bandwagoning...I usually like being in a minority and not flocking to the same thing everyone else is. Addendum
07-12-2006, 04:58 PM
Who is more popular? I don't know nor care.
Who do I like more? Batman.
For me, Batman represents the regular guy (even though he was in a wealthy family) who experienced one of the greatest traumas a child could encounter: watching his parents being killed before his eyes. He then does what he can to ensure that no one else should experience that. Depending on the pen of the writer, Batman stories rise above that simple premise to question the ethics/validity/value of vigilantism, and also a warning that shaping the world and/or society into one's view of order could lead to fascism. And with the pen of the artist, Batman can scare the **** out of you.
Superman represents the "ideal human" some strive for, although not being human. I've not read enough Superman to have a good discussion about him. Perhaps if I wasn't a cynic, I could enjoy him more.

Batman became more popular than Supes in the public's eye when the first film was released in 1989. In Superman The Movie you believed a man could fly. But in Batman (1989) we know who the bad@ss was. The third and fourth Superman movies truly killed the franchise.
