it usually takes a lot to startle me, but I was visibly surprised when i read that batwoman was to return as a "lipstick lesbian socialite".
Any body have similar views?

I have no problem with it, the only thing I'm surprised is that DC had the guts to do it. Let's just hope it doesn't turn the comics into a soapbox. It should be just a part of the character, and not a primary focus.
I like the costume, too.

I'm fine with it, I don't judge people (or fictional characters for that matter) on their sexual orientation.
A) Batwoman; Batgirl; Bathound, etc. = LAME
B) Lesbian Batwoman = UBER-LAME AND UNNECESSARILY CONTROVERSIAL
Oughta sell a few hundred copies.....

These responses furnish evidence for my own pet theory: that a lesbian heroine is just an extension of the male fantasy mentality that dominates comics. It wasn't enough that virtually every last female character in comicdom is unrealistically buxom and beautiful; now we have to indulge another male fantasy: buxom and beautiful lesbians.

Typical for comicbook babes.
. . . I'm surprised is that DC had the guts to do it
I honestly don't think it takes much in the way of "guts." The predominant readership for comicbooks are pre-30 males, and most of them aren't going to be offended by a lesbian heroine. Now male homosexual heroes (e.g., the Midnighter) require more guts on the part of the publisher.
If DC wants to have a legitimate character here, instead of just a politically correct gimmick, they'll have Batwoman explore her psychological problems with men, because that's what gives rise to lesbianism.

no character, or person, can exist in a vaccum.
Batman needs supporting characters to work off of. why do you think they invented Alfred, Gordon, Montoya, Bullock, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, etc for?
god...have you tried to not be a troll?

there's a controversy with talking about!
what is the root of homosexuality?
i think it's somewhere between psychological discourse and genetics.

Current thought in the medical community is that homosexuality is entirely physiological.

actually...there's about three theories going around currently.
that's one of them, another is that it is the way in which the mother proccess a certain chromosome while pregnant - but that is just for homosexual males.
i forget the third...

True, but that's still a physiological cause. Not a lifestyle choice like the religious fanatics and homophobes would like to believe.

Interestingly enough, I think Batman himself would also believe that homosexuality is a choice. The notion of choice is a bit of a mantra in the Batman mythos. He doesn't believe in pre-determination. We are who we choose to be. To quote Amanda Wahler from the JLU episode, an episode which expolores the psyche of Batman:
We choose our own fate, for good or ill.
I think those are some of the words he lives by.
I happen to believe that homosexuality is a choice, just in case you were wondering. And as for Batwoman being a lesbian, I think it is unnecessary controversy. It's stuff like this that make me appreciate animated continuity even more.
