I have read through many reviews and opinions of the film, yet found that no one mentioned the look they gave to Jean. I was utterly disappointed when I saw how they made her look like some sort of demon with a disease. When she was kissing Scott in the beginning it seemed that she had the effect of what Rogue had on people: turning them all veiny and dark. I understand most people will say this is Dark Phoenix but this is not how I envisioned it at all. They could have still made her eyes fiery, just change the shade of her eyes to a dark red, and given her some sort of fiery aura about her which was what we were left with at the end of X-2. Also, they show her as a full phoenix bird under the water, so what happened to that? She all the sudden turns bad out of the water? Comments....

I think what they did was a very good translation to film. The whole firey eyeballs and aura thing would have made it too cartoony IMO.

Thats how they left it in X-2, it really didnt seem too cartoony then.

i loved how dark phoenix was portrayed. if they had gone the 'fire bird/firey eyes' route, phoenix would have came across as cool-looking powerful character. with the route they took, phoenix came off as a dangerous, unstabile, scary, dark, cool-looking powerful character.

And if I was Phoenix I'd rip Wolverine's suit off, she missed a part there.
Eh, okay, anyway... I really liked how Phoenix looked in this movie. At first I expected something like X2, but I wasn't disappointed by X3's Dark Phoenix.
DarknessOfDeath
06-01-2006, 12:41 AM
... JEAN!! I Know your still in there!!! AAAAH
i liked the phoenix effects. It was cool. but the only thing that was lacking in terms of Jean/Phoenix was the Fire stuff... I'd like to see fire surrounding her and then -insert flaming sound- then she rises... and all hell breaks loose. ...
note: when Logan gets closer and closer to her, she moves closer to him... almost looks like she's about to take a bite out of him or something... lol. Oi ... Logan could have head butt her and knock her out cold. LOL :p
I wasn't overly disappointed with Phoenix/Dark Phoenix's visual representation in X3 by any means. I don't think it should have been exactly as it was in X2. It should have been awesome and terrifying at the same time. That being said, I don't think an aura or fire eyes would come off cartoony at all either, and I think it should have been included in the movie (It's the Phoenix afterall--it's her trademark).
I did find it a bit odd that upon her reemergence, it is implied that she is surrounded by light and power all around her (stupid cut away), but then it's never seen from again . . .

Maybe what we saw in X2 wasn't dark enough for Dark Phoenix, but I do agree they could still use some fire stuff surrounding her in X3.
I actually liked her looks. I had some concerns at first when I saw it in the TV spots and my God, she looked even better onscreen.

Who cares about the Phoenix flame? I'm happy with what we've got. Very creepy and eerie. What you saw at the end of X2 was Phoenix. This one ain't Phoenix. More like DARK Phoenix.

i louved it. except as i posted in one other thread, i wish that each time she killed someone, a piece of her clothing would be torn off or burnt off in little bits of shreds. and let the ashes dry off when they blow away. i'm not talking a sleeve but like threads from the hands- upwards. same for the legs, from ankles- upwards. and at least at some of the mirage (u know when its really f u c k in' hot) around her face and hands. i don't know, what do you think. i was hoping they'd given her the long boots w/ the costume but NOOOOOOO! oh well. i still luved it. i wish she killed off another x-men. i don't think she was evil enough. i mean, i know poor prof. x, but she should've killed at least, like colus. or beast. i don't know, what do you think?

do u think...if The phoenix storyline would have been explored deeper into a second movie? I mean instead of Jean dying in x3... have her die in x4. u think it would have worked?
Probably yes, I guess. Anything's possible. I would've preferred them filming X3 and X4 back-to-back with the X3 being Jean returning from her death in X2. She's coping with life and in the end, Dark Phoenix. Which carries on to X4. In X3, we could have the cure and the Sentinels and X4, we could have all of the movie focusing on Dark Phoenix.

That means you have to wait eight to ten years. That means X1, X2 and X3 didn't even exist.
If you're voting for a reboot, it's likely b/c of Cyclops' death mostly. Puh-lease! He can be brought back easily. You just gotta have an imagination, that's all. :o

Didn't the FX house that was working on the Phoenix Fire say that something at or near the end of the movie was going to be a jaw-dropping moment, as far as the Phoenix Fire is concerned?
I have yet to see the movie coz it's been a crazy week, so I plead ignorance on this question.
Nay, there was no Phoenix Fire in the movie at all. She stood near some fire. Does that count?

I think that if they had had more time we might have got those firery effects.

well the fire effect i saw were of the phonix coming out of the water after the wirlpool and after scot is knocked over. she rises into the air and her arms spread out and the fire like in x2 appears all over her body and and is all around her in the vaig shape of a birl, like x2 ending in the water. it then all goes bright like in the film and that is all i say, but the fire i say was whight as my step dad said they were not finnishing with this effect which suks i would have realy liked to have seen it in its fully glory.

In my mind at least, I am separating the two effects. The fire, red firey eyes...even the bird effect, that to me was "good Phoenix" as seen at the end of X2. The dark eyes, the stuff that happens to her face...that to me is the "bad Phoenix". At least that's how I look at it, so the lack of fire didn't bother me all that much.

god i hope they put in the phonix fire effect u have to see them they are mind blowing, the amount of fire she produces and the reflection on the lake wow wow wow fox realy need to look at what they are paying for befor they decide not to pay for it.

Touché! That's what I do, too. The black-eyed, veiny Jean? I just view her as DARK Phoenix. The clean, pure and fiery Phoenix in the end of X2? Just Phoenix.

I wish it would be a part of the deleted scenes & the scenes that you have mentioned, it made sense to me why she was on the ground. My view on Jean might just change to 100% positive. I was one of those people who were upset about not having the Phoenix Effect. Because I have waited for that for three years and I didn't even saw at least one. That sucks, I know. But I love how disturbingly freaky she had become. But I just think that it was disrespect (no offense) for them not to have Phoenix Effect, because it has been her trademark for almost 40 yrs. She's not Phoenix without it.

Oh believe me, you don't have to show me what it could have been. My mind has a pretty good picture of it already. I can write off the firebird to an artistic choice, but the actual lack of a "rising" sequence is a big flaw. Comic books tend to NOT leave a lot of visuals to the imagination, and that should have been in there. Not showing Cyke's death, OK...leaves his fate open-ended. But I can't think of a valid reason not to show Phoenix rising from the lake.

Me either.
TBH I think me and botboy's movie handles the rising sequence much more effectively...The whirlpool might be in our director's cut, NOT the other way around. Priorities!! :D

Both Simon and Zak are huge Xmen and Phoenix fans, so it doesn't make any sense. Simon said that the Phoenix firebird effect looked amazing, so it was indeed in the film. Maybe they didn't have time to complete the effect? Who knows. The Phoenix rising sequence was pathetic. It should have been really dramatic, but it seemed short. It was like Brett was in a hurry to get that scene over with! Why oh why did they do Phoenix without a damn Phoenix? I wish Fox would have waited until Bryan finished Superman. Oh well, there's nothing we can do about that now. It's done and over with :(
Hopefully we'll see the firebird on the DVD...

Guys, The Phoenix firebird was INDEED in the movie. Look what Zak had to say over at thexverse forum:
I will be getting to your questions shortly, as I promised I would. For those of you who like the movie, thank you for your compliments. For those of you who are angry or disappointed, I doubt anything I say will make you feel any different, but so it goes.
Whatever you think, keep in mind that Simon and I came on this site to engage with the fans because we felt that no one else was, and we knew that some of the decisions were going to be controversial. I know that I tried extremely hard not to mislead anyone about anything, and I would urge you to reread my posts before asking me questions. I was extremely careful not to say anything untrue or even to hype things that I knew were going to anger people. The proof is in my posts, check it out.
And yes, of course there were things that turned out differently than we expected. There always are. For example:
_________
EXT. ALCATRAZ ISLAND - NIGHT
THE DARK SKY STARTS TO BRIGHTEN
It looks like a second sun. All eyes rise, looking up into the sky, which twists into strange, unnatural colors.
The sky roils, forming into a ball of fire. The flames curl, like the wings of a bird. We see a single silhouette in the center of the conflagration.
Jean Grey.
---------
Yes, that is from the script. Welcome to moviemaking, not everything gets done the way you want it.
Thanks, talk to you soon,
Zak

There was some fairly effective pheonix iconography near the very end, when she's standing there and there are fires burning behind her. Don't know how you could have missed those shots.

The lack of a Phoenix effect was highly disappointing.
If they didn't have time to do it right, why not delay the release and do it correctly.
Jean just standing there looking zoned out was pathetic compared to what it might have looked like with a Phoenix effect added.

well the fire effect i saw were of the phonix coming out of the water after the wirlpool and after scot is knocked over. she rises into the air and her arms spread out and the fire like in x2 appears all over her body and and is all around her in the vaig shape of a birl, like x2 ending in the water. it then all goes bright like in the film and that is all i say, but the fire i say was whight as my step dad said they were not finnishing with this effect which suks i would have realy liked to have seen it in its fully glory.
i was hoping for a scene like this. if you look at the jean grey toy from burger king, jean is rising out of the water....but where was this scene from the movie?!?!

i hope you are being sarcastic. if that was the phoenix effect...then I am very pissed at Fox. I saw those fires in the trailers and in an MSN clip online showing a brief clip of the filiming of that scene. I didn't pay fox to see the movie with that and nothing more in regards to the phoenix effect.
on a side note, what did people think of the Phoenix "costume"? i thought it was kinda funny and really didn't pay any homage to her costume in the comics...but Famke carried it well.

I loved what they did with her; in my opinion ‘fiery eyes’ would have been too predictable. I never expected her to look like a corpse when she was in full rage mode; it was absolutely fantastic.
I do agree that the kiss effect was a bit too similar to Rogue’s power effect though.

I don't care what anyone says - This movie rocked, but the only real downfall for me was the lack of a proper Phoenix Effect. We got close to one with her hair, but nothing else. In one of the concepts, she looks so evil with firey eyes...
If they wanted to make sure the audience knew she was evil, they should have made her look like this: Her eyes should be bright, firey, but with very dark outlines... her face, when super angry, should be darkened, not veiny. The fire should be an energy which sprouts out, gradually, from within her. Starting about the same amount at the end of X2, but progressively get larger and larger. The energy should a bright red outlining her body, having the middle fade into a sparkly black. It shouldn't look too much like fire, but more energy-ish, waving randomly from within her, having the brightest spots around her head. The energy around her arms would be the longes, shorter around her hair, and should flow out from her legs - symbolizing a bird, but not really looking like one.
But we could have seen something in her risings cene if they wouldn;t have taken the cheap way out and not show her. Argh... Like I said, the Phoenix effect was the only missing thing... Cyclops is a different story.

I'm sort of sick of people whining that the movie universe Jean didn't use fancy pyrotechnics to impress people...
No... she didn't. She just KILLED A FEW THOUSAND PEOPLE.
Frankly, I think her actions spoke more than any fire aura would. She was scary, not hokey. A big cheesy firebird around her would have looked sort of silly in a movie.
This isn't the two-dimenstional, four-color comics. It would have looked wrong on a real woman, in a real background, with CGI fire.
I think they picked the right way to do this. They had Famke ACT like Phoenix, and that was far more intimidating, in my book.

Not that its the FX people's fault or even their intention, but the Phoenix effects simply reminded me of Dark Witch Willow from the final episodes of season 6 of Buffy.
In that respect I was pretty disappointed as I had hoped to see a continuation of the "flame" effects seen in X2.
That said, the Phoenix effect was an improvement over what was done on Buffy and certainly was more impressive, I was just expecting something very different and to see something I already attributed to an existing character was a let down (but I'm sure for non-Buffy fans, the effects would have been unique and pretty powerful).
Cheers.

I noticed phoenixes eyes in x3 got bright red at some parts like x2s phoenix if thats any consolation. I really dont miss x2s effects the slightest. This new effect has made a name for itself instantly, and now x2s effect fits in as the first stages of the phoenix, that has evolved.
I like the subtlety that has become the brief firebird reflection in the pond. Not using it again is a charm of sorts imo.

I noticed a hint of orangy-red in her eyes when her face turned Phoenix for a second as Jean was dry humping logan. Also in the scene with Magneto in the woods... When Magneto yells Enough...theres a hint of fire in her eyes before they revert back to normal.

I actually think it could have looked amazing if they had done it right. Hell, it wouldn't even have to be in the shape fo a bird really, I would've been completely satisfied if fire was involved somehow. Like this manip I did;

I agree that using the Phoenix flame would've been cheesier than Velveeta. IMHO, I think that Jean as the Phoenix looked frightening enough - those pitch-black eyes were an unexpected surprise that worked really well for me.
Likewise, her demeanor throughout gave me an impending sense of uncontrolled, potential menace. Having strutted her stuff by demolecularizing Scott and Xavier, she didn't really have to do much more to show how powerful she was. Seeing her just standing around watching the proceedings on Alcatraz was unsettling, because you just don't know when her destructive rage would kick in.
