Jon Favreau to direct 'Iron Man'

By LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun

HOLLYWOOD -- Jon Favreau finally has an iron-clad directing project. For the past few years, Favreau has been trying to green light a film version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars.

Paramount Pictures recently put that project, inspired by the writings of the man who also created Tarzan, on the back burner. Fortunately for Favreau, the film wing of Marvel Comics asked him to direct a movie based on its vintage comic book series Iron Man.

THE SUN: Why is Marvel Comics producing this film basically on their own?

FAVREAU: They wanted more control. This is a superhero dear to their hearts. Iron Man is the biggest superhero left who doesn't have a film franchise yet.

THE SUN: How sincere is their commitment to the film?

FAVREAU: They've set a summer 2008 release, which means we'll start shooting in January. You can't get more committed than that.

THE SUN: Both Tom Cruise and Nicolas Cage have indicated they're interested in portraying Iron Man. Have you talked to either of them?

FAVREAU: Stark will be played by a relative unknown. We don't need a marquee name to sell the film. The character is the star.

THE SUN: Wouldn't it be considered a coup if you could get someone like Cruise at a budget price?

FAVREAU: Stars bring too much baggage with them. I don't think Daredevil benefited by casting Ben Affleck at the height of his popularity, even if he did desperately want to play the character. Tobey Maguire was a relative unknown when he was cast in Spider-Man. That's the kind of actor I'm looking for. Someone with experience but a low profile.

THE SUN: Aren't you afraid special effects will eat up most of your budget? Special effects for Superman Returns are rumoured to have pushed that budget up to $250-million US.

FAVREAU: There's a way to be scrappy with special effects. You have to make them work for your film and not the opposite. I think I proved that with Zathura.

THE SUN: Why do you think Zathura was such a box-office disappointment?

FAVREAU: No one could pronounce the title, and that was just the beginning of the problems the studio (Columbia Pictures) had trying to release it.

THE SUN: You have a cameo in your friend Vince Vaughn's comedy The Break-Up. Weren't you disappointed he didn't ask you to direct?

FAVREAU: Absolutely not. That was the whole appeal for me. Vince phoned and said I could just be an actor. It was so great not having to worry about directing or writing, or both.

I dont think so really. He ran over budget and Spider-Man 3 has a similar budget and X3 had a $210 million budget so $260 million doesnt sound absurd to me. WB is just trying to cover its ass.

X3 had $210 Million???

In that case I am apalled by how rudimentery some of the visual effects were. :down

That is very true.

I guess it was the direction, but I saw fakeness/shortcuts in the following areas:
-Magneto smashing the cars to free Mystique and Juggernaut
-Pheonix-induced deaths
-Juggernaut
-Multiple Man

Yeah, the cars Magneto crushed looked odd.

Once again, the budget of X-men 3 being that high was because they had to get it released before Superman Returns.

To get something released and produced that quickly, it costs MORE money.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Helfant said, "We're very excited to lock down the release date for Iron Man, Marvel's first independently produced feature film. We couldn't have asked for a better partner than Paramount to work with on this very powerful character franchise."

Mr. Feige added, "We're thrilled to be launching the summer 2008 movie season with Iron Man. Marvel has had great success with the first Friday in May -- 'Spider-Man' broke records on that first Friday and 'X2' debuted at the top of the box office charts as well. We're looking forward to extending that track record with Iron Man and are extremely pleased with the progress of the script, the production team we are forming and the initial production designs."

We're 2 years off. It's important to claim your box office real estate early and start making a big deal early so nobody else snags it.

...Oh and who says they're not in talks with the future cast right now? Favreau has made one post in 2 weeks maybe 2 or 3. He's busy doing something. :) He used to post every day.

"Iron Man" Can in 2008

by Joal Ryan
Jun 23, 2006, 4:45 PM PT

Batman last summer. Superman this summer. Spider-Man next summer. And coming in summer 2008: A superhero in a can.

A big-screen, live-action movie about the armor-encased Marvel Comics' character known as Iron Man will break into theaters on May 2, 2008, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment announced Friday.

The moves positions Iron Man as the first popcorn picture of summer 2008, as well as the first one with a definitive release date. Other high-profile projects circling the territory include additions to the Chronicles of Narnia and Indiana Jones franchises.

As previously announced, Iron Man will be directed by Jon Favreau. The Swingers star turned Elf helmer recently told the Calgary Sun that shooting will start in January.

No cast has been announced; no Iron Man man has been confirmed. Favreau said he wants "someone with experience but a low profile."

"Stars bring too much baggage with them," Favreau said in the Calgary Sun. "I don't think Daredevil benefited by casting Ben Affleck at the height of his popularity, even if he did desperately want to play the character."

Favreau costarred with Affleck in Daredevil.

In the past, Tom Cruise and would-be Superman/incumbent Ghost Rider Nicolas Cage have been linked to Iron Man, a factoid that helps illustrate how far back Iron Man's past runs. For years, the hero toiled in development hell. His luck seemed to change in late 2004 when New Line Cinema announced Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) would direct.

But Iron Man's close-up didn't happen. Marvel reclaimed its pile of tin last year. Around the same time, the comics giant announced plans for 10 self-financed superhero movies to be released by Paramount. Iron Man will be the first to emerge from that deal, beating the likes of Captain America and Ant-Man to the multiplex. According to Variety, Captain America will be next on the soundstage after Iron Man, the shield-baring hero's foe in Marvel Comics' much-hyped new Civil Wars series.

Captain America is being primed for a 2009 release, the trade paper said. Scripts are also in the works for Thor, Nick Fury and the aforementioned Ant-Man.

The Marvel/Paramount pact looks to safeguard against any disruptions in the superhero pipeline. Last summer, Batman Begins and Fantastic Four fed the fanboy need. This summer, X-Men: The Last Stand and Superman Returns, opening Wednesday, will do their part. Next summer, it'll be up to the likes of Spider-Man 3.

Though not an icon like Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, Iron Man is no newcomer--he made his comic-book debut in 1963.

According to his official Marvel biography, Iron Man was born Anthony Edward Stark in Long Island, New York, where presumably he led a happy life until in superhero tradition his parents were killed, and all sorts of bad/weird stuff started happening, including a bad ticker that led him to suit up in Hormel-approved duds. Known as Tony to friends, Stark heads Stark Enterprises. In his spare time, he fights evildoers with the Avengers.
