He is currently in the movie...
BUT...
He is a 4.5 foot tall robot that turns into a stereo/cd player. He is also fragile and he gets his head kicked off by a valley girl (the main female character).

In regards to that, Robert Orci recently revisited the Don Murphy boards, and answered some questions about the film, though giving vague answers. When asked about Soundwave, he said that if the character appeared in the film, that he would be more faithful to the original than what has been rumored in recent months.

Yeah so I read...
But how faithful is faithful? They could technically change just like one thing and it could be more faithful.
I still stand by that the Decepticon Helicopter will end up being Soundwave before it's over.

We'll just have to wait and see. And I agree with you on Soundwave becoming the helicopter. Just have to change the name and maybe write his personaility into that role. Besides, the whole infiltration of the military base and ejecting a minion scene with Vortex sounds very Sounwave-esque, along with the MH-53 helicopter that was mentioned in that scipt.

His voice was definitely the coolest part about him, with that minor echo effect. Also the fact that he could eject out a robotic panther, vulture(?) and two little robots made him tops on my list.

Ok First Off...
You're pissing me off with the growing hostility to me.
Secondly, I've NEVER said that 4ft. Soundwave was a good idea, NEVER, not once. In fact the first couple of postings I made on the subject were against the idea of comic relief Soundwave. And I still think it's a bad idea!
Thirdly, I've protested against many things about this movie:
Megatron not appearing until the 3rd Act.
Megatron not having an Earth-based alt. mode.
Bumblebee being mute.
Decepticons not talking, just being there to fight and get blown up.
Soundwave getting his head knocked off by a valley girl.
Grimlock originally being the Decepticon Helicopter.
Starscream only having two lines of dialogue.
The Matrix being named "The Energon Cube".All of those things I've been against since they were announced.

I only posted ONCE that I don't think you'd like the movie overall...just now in this thread. Almost all of the the points WalkingDead cite come straight from the leaked drafts reviewed by several reputable folks in the business of reviewing drafts. However, according to the folks at Bay's and Don Murphy's sites, the drafts are "outdated" and have been changed since. There's no way to know what is and what isn't in the movie.
However, an important part of the story in the draft IS that Megatron only makes an appearance towards the end (makes it more dramatic I guess) and he hasn't assumed an Earth vehicle mode (presumably because he's been experimented on by the military for many years now).
His sudden appearance and this entire premise is very reminiscent of SHOCKWAVE in the comics.
According to the leaked scripts the Decepts are more like silent killing machines (think War of the Worlds). If you think about it, it does make a bit of sense.... they're giant computers... they probably communicate by non-verbal means. On the other hand, the Autobots talk to humans verbally because they choose to.
I'm not defending this plot.... just beating Walking Dead to the "apologetic-this movie will rock" punch. ;-)

Hmmm… you know what? I kinda... like this. I mean, I'm a fan of the old cartoon (and specially of the animated movie, where they killed the old toys to bring up the new ones but it was kinda awkward because the kids really liked these old toys so a lot of little children cried and stuff) and of the comic (until it got boring and all they did was create new versions of the Devastator archetype in each issue and also Optimus Prime had his head separated from his body for like 20 issues and then he died, what was all that about), but, you know, something like that just wouldn't work on current movie standards.
I mean, come on. "The Decepticons"? Suppose you are en evil robot from another planet, and you come to earth to **** mankind in the ***. Would you be announcing your little club of killer robots with a catchy descriptive name? Or would you be ****ing mankind in the ***? What about a giant robot turning into a boom box? That was cool, wasn't it? It was also an abysmal stretch. Can you really see today’s audiences, with their ridiculous degree of suspension of disbelief, accepting that?
It worked perfectly in the cartoon (that was for kids), and it worked sometimes in the comics (but about 80% of it blows, frankly), but it wouldn’t work in a major Hollywood movie.
You know what, they can make Soundwave an iPod if they want, I don’t care. But it would be cool if they somewhat managed to have him be a giant robot with the face and the voice and the shooting smaller robots from his chest and whatnot. He doesn’t have to transform into any form of sound equipment (btw most vehicles have sound equipments). And the robots that shoot out of his chest don’t have to be cassette tapes. They don’t have to be nothing. They just have to shoot out of his chest.
Right?

I believe the movie is going to be fun. It's the perfect thing for Michael Bay. I mean, it's the next step, really. When I was watching that chase scene in THE ISLAND (which is a movie I first saw on DVD and will probably never see again), I got the sense Bay wanted it to go further, but didn't know how. Now he knows. Having the cars and $#!% transforming into giant robots in mid-chase.

Yeah. I kinda like the idea of the Decepticons being a silent malevolent force. That's an "adaption" that I think is inspired. They can choose to speak when they want to... but, really they don't have to. In fact, it's creepier if they don't.
I would like to hear Megatron utter or hiss "Primmmme" in absolute hatred when catches a glimpse of Optimus. But, that's all I need.
Getting back to Soundwave tho....
I truly lament the passing of "Soundwave." I think the whole size-changing thing would have been one of the COOLER sci-fi things in the movie. Its ommission is almost as bad (and cowardly!!!) as Godzilla not having nuke breath in American Godzilla 98.

I think the plot of the movie will be very hit and miss.
I think the GCI Transformers, action, chases, and explosions will rock and be great.
I think that Soundwave will turn out to be the Decepticon Helicopter before it's over.
I can forgive and accept a lot of changes in this Transformers movie...since this is just like almost every other Transformers product, a New Interpretation/Adaptation. BUT, I will ONLY be happy with the movie if the Transformers are handled like real characters with individual traits, characteristics, ideals, and goals. If the TF's end up being nothing more than transforming robots blowning **** up and fighting, I'll honestly hate the movie, no matter how cool the effects and action are.

Soundwave must speak, even if he is a pesky little audio device (which would be sad, bring on the copter). As far as silent but deadly Decpticons we are forgeting one thing, the Decpticons in the cartoon are power hungry, grandious, attention grabbing dictator types. The would love to speak just to hear themselves talk, and if they wanted humans to bow down to them, they would like nothing better than to tell them to do so with their own voices. Do you really think Starscream ( in front of some Decpticon cohorts) could resist a "That's right you pathetic flesh bags, bow before your lord and master!" (the humans obey scared out of their minds) "At least some lifeforms can show me the respect I deserve." (shoots a glance at the other Decepticons)

For me, personally, the only things that I think they need to be adressed are the issue of a mute Bumblebee and a midget Soundwave. The way I see it, Bumblebee can initially attempt to communicate with Spike/Sam using the radio, and make Soundwave the helicopter and call the boombox Frenzy.

It could go either way. It all depends on the "Placeholder" status.
So far the Decepticon Helicopter has been called:
Grimlock - The original name for the Helicopter in the first script, was changed very quickly.
Soundwave - The Second name and the character the Copter's abilities are modeled after.
Vortex - The Current Name, but supposedly a Placeholder.
Incinerator - A Rumored name that Micheal Bay supposedly came up with.

Oh and the reason why Soundwave was dropped as the Helicopter's name (at least as it appears, even though all of Soundwave's abilities stayed), was because people complained to Don Murphy (movie producer) and the writers that they wanted a more G1 Soundwave, a musical device Soundwave.
So, since the idea of mass-shifting and matter-reconfiguration was thrown out EARLY-ON (by the studio execs and the producers), they made a 4.5 ft super G1-Homage Soundwave. Sure he couldn't grown into a 30 ft. robot, but he had the musical device alt. mode, the same overall design feel (rumored to look a LOT like the Soundwave G1 toy), and was still used to infiltrate and spy.
Then what happens? People ****** AGAIN. So now they are in the process of dropping Soundwave completely (since they can't make anyone happy) or stuck trying to figure out what the f*** they are going to do to squeeze him in.
EDIT -- And before someone says anything...more people complained about Soundwave's 4 foot height than they did about Soundwave becoming comic relief (a.k.a. getting his head kicked off by a valley girl). Just shows you were the people's priorities are...more concerned with getting a purist G1-Soundwave in look and design, than if he gets his head knocked off and he stumbles around like an idiot.

Both would have been horrendous ideas. I would have prefered Soundwave be an AWAC radar/communications plane. Makes more sense. But at this point, who cares? All these characters are whacked (Soundwave is Frenzy.... Megatron is Shockwave... Bumblebee is Windcharger, .... I could go on).

I'm not entirely sold that the reason why Soundwave is no longer the helicopter is because of fan reaction. Granted, there were some people who didn't like the idea when it was announced last year, but there wasn't universal opposition to the idea like there was with the inclusion of Arcee and some of the recent rumors.
WalkingDead

Both would have been horrendous ideas.
I have to disagree with that. A 4.5 ft Soundwave who was still tough, strong, and could infiltrate and spy while still having the G1-Soundwave look and voice, would have been fine with me.
The problem for me was the idea that they decided to kick of his head and make his exo-structure very fragile. He could have still been a tough 'bot.
Think about a fight where an Autobot thinks he can handle Soundwave because of his size...then Soundwave rips into him with a sonic attack and then tackles the Autobot like Rumble and Frenzy used to, taking the Autobot right down. Soundwave could have still been a badass, had they taken the right measures.
EDIT -- And before you say it CFlash, I'm not that easy to please...
It's just not Soundwave's height that makes him cool or a badass, it's his personality, his voice, and his abilities overall. If we had to loose Soundwave's height but kept his overall vibe, look, and voice...I could accept that.

I'm sorry but 4ft. Soundwave with all the looks, voice, overall vibe and abilities and not used for comic relief has great potential. I'm still not so sure. Even the people that didn't like it still didn't start thread after thread call for it to be changed. I remember Don saying that Hasbro wanted Soundwave to be a music playing device of some sort and be able to mass-shift. My theory is that when the writers decided to expand the number of Decepticons they decided to put that in there, while leaving out mass-shifting, thinking they were being G1-friendly by making Soundwave a boombox and adding Vortex to the line-up as the helicopter.

I mean that could totally be it...but the fact that "Vortex" still has all of Soundwave's abilities just screams that they still are maybe thinking of keeping him Soundwave. Of course, it could just be that they were too lazy to re-adjust the abilities of each character. If that's the actual truth, then...just *sigh*.

I'm guessing they kept the identity of the Decepticon Helicopter open-ended considering there wasn't any gurantee that there would be X amount of Decepticons, so if they decided to make it Soundwave again, it would be an easy change and not require an extensive rewrite.

That is the only bad part of 4ft. Soundwave.
I mean alone, it's possible to make a 4 ft. Soundwave cool, but when you just try to have him have the tape minions, it doesn't work so well.
I still don't believe that the stereo Decepticon will be Soundwave. I think the Helicopter has a much better shot at being SW.

Although it's entirely possible there were two helicopters and Soundwave wasn't involved in the Middle East scenes, just like early test footage.

He didn't have minions. That's one of the reasons people complained about his size.
E: Great name BTW. ;)

Well, that would be freakin awesome and would redeem Don Murphy in my eyes. In my opinion he is a basketcase who has taken the TF fan community for an utter ride.

Maybe Soundwave will turn into a pimped out car with hydraulics and really HUGE speakers that bust out raps.
Seriously thought...they better not screw over our beloved Soundwave too much. He better talk the same and at least have something musically related or at least SONIC related.

Which is why the 'Con Helicopter makes much a lto of sense as Soundwave...it has all of SW's abilties:
It uses a sonic attack, unleashes a minion, and hacks into the military computers.

Oh, well if that's the case. I'm all for it. As long as he looks close to the G1 version in robot form and talks the same.
The Decepticons are really seeming threatening in this movie from everything i've read...I like that. I like the fear factor they are giving off.

Indeed. I like how they are sounding.
Soundwave and Shockwave (G1) were my two favorite Decepticons as a kid.
