Demon Batman from BEGINS. Work in Progress Pics [Archive]

Started this yesterday...Chavant Soft oil clay as usual.
It's a work in progress..nothing is definitive at this point..not yet at least.

It's the scene in Batman Begins when Batman says to Dr. Crane..."taste of your own medicine" and gasses him...the scarecrow...and this is how he see's Batman...or at least I'm trying to get it to look like that.
**but you guys here already know the scene. :) ***

It's missing the teeth that once in the wearers mouth 'should' cause the mouth and jaw to protrude forward distorting it somewhat like the movie look...we'll see if it works according to plan.:)

Will be a wearable silicone prosthetic. First for dramatic poses for photos, then retired here on display..:)

Some funky lighting to see if I'm on the right track with the skin texture and stuff....Fun sculpt. :)

Whoa!! How on earth you're able to get much eyes on the detail, dude? Seeing the Demon version, it look so difficult to see much details with how short & not much seeing of it. Man, I need to move to your house asap. :p

It really is still pretty rough...but it's getting there.
Someone took these pics into Photoshop and added some colors and shades...kind of brings the piece to life...or at least an idea of what it'll look like when done...colors are off, but still cool!!

I'm glad you guys are liking the piece so far. With some luck you'll feel good about it when it's finally finished also. :)

Awesome. I wish the actual cowl had been closer in shape to the demon one in some respects.

NOT all the organic details and wrinkles etc, It should still be flat and smooth, but I like that it was less built up around the face, the nose is smaller/flatter etc. In fact the whole fact it's a prosthetic - I think the real cowl could have been a very simple prosthetic.

And the merchandisers were ABSOLUTELY INSANE not to give us any merch of this version of the character. How cool would figures and statues have been?

Making the body...from the crotch up..gloves...and cape....all these elements are in sink with the look of this demon cowl/head.

Just a quick update...

A bit more done. The base of the neck is charred or melted looking, so if you're wondering why the neck on the right side looks weird...it's cause I'm trying to get it to look right..:)

Thanks folks for the kind words!!! This is a real fun costume to be working on..and, being that it's a costume, the only way I can get the black ooz out of my mouth is if I take a swig of motor oil or something like that...so, I figure that part can be left out for now...LOL

Well, maybe I should elaborate on what I'm doing..:)

This will be a wearable prosthetic.
What does that mean?

That the whole thing will be gluded to my head and face, and the mouth will be cut open...and when I talk so will it move...just as we saw in the movie...just like the Freddy Krueger make up for instance...but first we need to do a full sculpture of the character in question...then the sculpture is broken down, molded...cast up in pieces if need be and each piece glued to the body...fun...eh...pain in the arse really but once it's all on it should be pretty cool...so to answer your question...yes, mouth will be open..:)

When the whole thing is done I will post pics of me wearing it and moving my mouth and face...It 'should' be cool...fingers crossed!!!!!!

Ok here's the torso!!

AND I KNOW YOU GUYS HERE ARE ALL PURISTS AND MOVIE ACCURACY RULES BUT....I did a totally custom body for this.

We dont really see the body of the DemonBat, and quite honestly I really wanted something 'dramatic'...something with more umph! than what Bale was wearing but again...we never saw it anyhow so going custom here should be cool....I hope you guys dont hang me for that!!!!!LOL

This will be worn after all so I went a bit crazy on the details.
The entire thing is totally custom. I just kept the same texturing and patterns that started in the head part and now have worked their way into the torso. Particularly the charred neck area.

This is HEAVILY influenced by the SPAWN movie costume. One of the best movie sculpted rubber suits ever...IMO of course.

You can see a vague chest bat design that will be much less noticable when done...and look at where the belt buckle would be...you'll see a bat's head and assuming it's possible to see in the pics the wings look like they're on fire and sourround the cod and side areas of that region. Again, something that the movie SPAWN costume really had going on well.

Water Clay sculpt...5 hours give or take up to this point.

I'll have the gauntlet spikes directly on the forearm. Almost as if they were bone coming out from the arm or even something that's been fused to his skin.

Again, it's totally custom in it's design. The movie costume didnt have spikes or web like veining going on at all...not to mention bats camoflauged into the design.

I 'think' the front area is winding down finally. The cod bat still needs finishing but the rest is more or less how I pictured it in my noggin when I started this guy. I'll start posting side and back shots very soon too.

The arms are nearly done all around but nothing on the back torso yet. I may do that as a separate add on later to make it easier for the wings to be supported....I know I know...the movie Demon didnt have wings...but I dont care...mine will!:woot:

I think it needs a bit more 'body' and a little more 'flow'..kind of like what a good shampoo does....but it's close now.

Just like the head, the bone structure on this isn't really symmetrical either...it's meant to look sort of lopsided or warped..not much mind you but creature/deformed/charred and melted-kinda-like is the effect I'm trying to get with this guy.

I've also got a few people wondering why the chest bat logo is almost non existent. Well, I want to it be enhanced by the paint work more so than as a typical 'seen one you've seen 'em all' type batsuits....besides...I like the idea of using this torso for 'other'characters too so I dont want it terribly customized.
...and, as much as this is from my own noggin....the movie version of this outfit didnt have a chest bat logo anyhow...

That whole scene in BEGINS was absolutely one of the coolest things I had ever seen. My father when he saw, was like: "WOW"... so imaginative. A "bat out of hell" or "demon bat". It was crazy. The legend and mystique Batman has int he film, that is what the villains, thugs, etc. picture Batman as looking like. "Can he really fly?", "I heard he can disappear."... truly a frightening sight. Wish we got to see more of it in the film. Great work, DavidY1.

A little update.
The clay is where I want it. I've been cooking parts of the clay to make it crack and coating the sculpt with latex 'over and over and over again' to give it a sort of skin...lava-like and charred.. kind of like what the movie costume had. For the movie, they took a Begins chest piece..coated it with whipped foam latex by caking it on then blasting it with heat guns to make it pop, crack and tear. I did sort of the same thing with just latex...and am real happy with the results..LOL!

I decided to nix the chest bat logo and the bat on the cod pice..after all that time working on a cool embossed logo I decided to scrap it...but, the movie suit doesnt have one anyhow....and the cod bat was just too out of place in the end..I dug the idea, but not for this guy....:)

I've got a bunch of stuff I'm painting and waiting on to dry. I'm actually working on the Apocalypse suit now...doing too much at once... :ohwell

The head has been molded and I've cast up a few half faces just to do some test paint up's. The Demon Bat isn't all black..but a bunch of washes and tints of colors ranging from greens to violet's...and he needs to look like he's got some kind of molten or metallic-like charred skin...

This is just one of the half faces. It's cast in prosthetic grade silicone and has the appropriate 'deadener' additive to make it more skin like and able to move with facial expressions and lip movements. It's pretty cool...but on this one I yanked on it to see how far it could stretch before tearing...and it was a lot..but I tore it from the corners of the mouth out. Still, works fine for a test paint up.

Just a test paint up, and I photoshopped the back part of some of them...critiques..suggestions...all welcome.

I propped up the headpiece onto the body sculpture to see what I still have to do detail wise to make the neck of the cowl blend into the chest piece. I think a little more of that charred effect around the area where the cowl will rest on the torso and that too can be molded. :)

I threw a cheap nylon cape on him just to see if all the proportions and angles lined up the way I planned them :). The finished cape will have the same charred and molten 'distressed' look of the body but for now...just a look at it with a plain cape....

I just googled Holy Terror. I remember that comic from way back. I thought it was a cool concept because I dig custom takes and spin off's. Unless I grow a 3rd arm I dont see myself doing that one any time soon..LOL

It's really meant to be a wearable mask, but for conventions and display purposes, I made this as a display bust for them instead. I hope those of you heading out to the show have fun...and take lots of pics for us less fortunate that cant make it...

Oh..and before you guys go nuts on me...I know, the eyes are not supposed to be orange..they're supposed to be green, but I didnt have any green eyes and that addition was a last minute thing...literally..
I sculpted open eye sockets, molded and cast them in less than 45 minutes.

It's just my wearable mask adapted to have the eyes in there for display purposes. Even though they're the wrong color I thought they'd still look cool.

Yes, the whole thing has a real skin-like flexibility to it. I cast it from prosthetic grade silicone so it can be worn and move with my face pretty well. I will be updating this once I have the chest ready to show also. I want to show the cowl and chest together.

Just a quick tease...:)
It will be ready by this evening in time for me to catch my flight to Atlanta GA for Dragon Con this weekend...

Keep in mind that we brought the torso 'sculpture' with us this past weekend to the Fan Expo...so in 3 days we molded and cast it up...got it painted and are just finishing the seaming now.
Hands, feet and legs all being finished now..and we didnt have them made up at all until yesterday...cape, well I guess I need to make that too huh??

Dragon Con was a BLAST!!!! I dont recall any past DC's that were as much fun as this one.
It was great seeing the usual faces and just as great to meet the new folks who were there for the first time. Seriously a great weekend!

Nope. The chest piece you saw there was the sculpture and the head was a test pull. After the show we molded and cast the torso up, and cast up a new headpiece...made the legs and modified a pair of hands and feet to fit into the context of the costume. :)
