View Full Version : 'Retcon Bombs' FNSM#9 Discuss-

I'm quite digging this book right now, its a bit wacky and not what some people expect from a Spidey book, but I like all the parallel universe + time travelling stuff.
At least FNSM is unique to the other two core titles.
Ringo is on great form, despite his strange tendency to draw Spidey barrel bodied and w/ short legs.
So anyway, Hobby 2211's new weapons!
I can't help but assume these have been designed to clean up major recent bad ideas in Spidey continuity. What do you reckon the chances are of the Stacy twins rocking up in this arc and then tasting some retcon bombs?
How sweet would that be?
As dumb and implausible as the whole Gwen/Osborn thing was, a 'retcon bomb' would be the perfect antidote to the whole mess.
It's as if the powers that be would be acknowledging how stupid SP was and rather than devise a way of writing the twins out of status quo they could just off them in this way to kinda let you know that they know they screwed up.
Maybe the twins won't show up in this arc, (though it would be awesome if they did and got zapped as it would fix the whole SP problem) but you gotta admit Hobby's new weapon has obviously been designed by PAD to wipe some character/s out in this arc.
Fingers crossed.

i've heard mixed things about this title.
i'm giving it this arc to see if it's a keeper of not.
the whole future, time travelling thing isn't usually my thing though :(
Yeah, everyone is pissing all over this- but it's great to see stuff from the 2099 and 2219 universes again!! And the retcon bombs are such a good idea. Just drop them everywhere!

Can you say "convenient plot device"? FNSM has been a disappointment ever since it was started.

They should just blame it all on Superboy's punches. Not only would it be hilarious, but 90% of Spider-Man fans wouldn't have a clue what was going on. :o

bwa ha ha ha ha...yes, Superboy could just punch the universe and get rid of everything fanboys have hated, it worked for DC :o

No kidding. I wish he'd throw some punches into the Marvel univers or drop a retcon bomb on the last 6 years of Amazing Spider-man. I like FNSM and Sensational though.

Maybe Ben Reilly will get the Jason Todd treatment and reappear because of his punches as well. ;)
As far as this story, it has the potential to retcon whatever it wants really but if it's not used for that reason, there will be no point to this story.

If its not used to bring bk Ben Reilly there is no point to this arc?
Are u kidding, what w/ all the crap that has happened over the last 2 plus years in the SM books, there is plenty good that can be retcon'd in this arc.
It's all up to how much Quesada/JMS have been willing to admit their stuff sucks and tell PAD he can scrap some, and how much.
For me the top of the ret con to do list would be the Sins Past arc.

That's what I meant, that I hope this story was created by PAD just for that reason, to retcon crap like Sins past. If this story doesn't retcon anything, I will be severely disappointed. :(
The Ben Reilly comment was a little Infinite Crisis joke. :p I guess I could've written that post a bit clearer.

Ok I'm w/ ya now.
I'm sure this story has been created by PAD for the sole reason of doing some serious retconing, and I think the reveal of Hobby's new weapons in FNSM#9 is definatley something to be happy about.

It's the last shining bit of hope in Spider-man comice. Getting rid of Sin's Past is like a dream come true.

Surprisingly it's not a horrible book. Ultimate and Sensational are better in my opinion but I like the way FNSP is going.

It completely wipes whatever it hits out of existance. If it hits a person, they never existed, and slowly fade they from everyone's memories.

Whoah! I've gotta say...I'm liking the sound of these 'retcon bombs'. They could really have some fun with this idea. Although it does seem like a cheap trick to pull. But I'm not complaining! :venom::up:

But remeber, so far it hasn't even been used like Dangerous is theorizing; it's purely a plot point in the arc, not a universe-changing thing. Yet, at least.

I havnt hada chance to read the ish yet, so i wana ask-- are you sure it wasn't all said kinda tongue in cheek? if not then maybe its just going to be used to send uncle ben away again. it would erase his reappearance from aunt may and peters' memories and so make the fact he CAN'T come back to life in the 616 universe easier to take for pete and may. Oh and let May continue dating Jarvis :) i like that idea.

It wouldn't surprise me with the way the books are being done now. I actually have this soft spot for Friendly Neighborhood. It's not bad. May and Jarvis is kinds cool too.

I find this current arc kind of boring, I'm so sick of these stories that deal with old characters, whether it's bring them back temporarly or ruining their memory it just gets old. Now Sensational, that's a good spidey title.

Y'know, this story isn't like JMS and ASM where they're trying to change anything or whatever. It seems like PAD's just trying to write an enjoyable story, not change the mythos. We won't know for sure until the arc's over, obviously, but that's what it seems like. I would expect at the end of it for things to be pretty much back to normal.

These retcon bombs were mentioned over 10 years ago when this Goblin was introduced. He used them in the comic Spider-man meets Spider-man 2099. They were not created to clean up stories, but its interesting how he brought this character back. Maybe they are planning to retcon stuff. :)

But if Ben were to jump in front of one of these bombs or get hit, would that not mean that Ben had never existed?
Or would it only mean that version of Ben never existed?
Hmm, that would mean PP and May could move on since they would forget their visitor. I do believe that by the end of the arc Ben will be gone again,
I just hope that is not all that happens.

Hopefully ben sacrifices himself cos how else could marvel justify why may and pete wouldnt keep him (aww, he's like a puppy). plus it reinforces the whole ben-was-made-to-be-dead thing in the 616 universe. it seems obvious only that version would be disappeared, but im only speculating. i for one, would love for this to be all that happens. i want an arc with no lasting effects whatsoever! like the good old days, before x-men's success forced marvel's hand in regards to creating the clone saga etc
Gawwwwd i hate what the x-men have done to comics -- lack of imaginative ideas for origins, alternate futures, waaaay too powerful marvel characters and overcomplicated arcs. not to mention ppl returning to the dead-- x-men blatantly set the precedent for marvel in this regard. anyway, im ranting...

Read this book last night. Wow. What a really enjoyable read.
Seemed kinda too DC comics for me for a few seconds there with all the talk of multiverses and everything. I was expecting to see Spider-Man of Earth 2 pop up in the regular universe or something because of it.
But the retcon bomb....hmmm...wasn't this retcon bomb done before in a Spider-Man story? Possibly in Spider-Man 2099? I swear to God this is not the first time I've heard of this. So, Wolverine25th, it's not a plot device, heh...Mr. Grumpy Guts.
And Spidey's new suit coming back to bite him in the ass, haha. Didn't see him thanking Stark then.
I really like this story and I am sort of relishing in the fact that people REALLY THOUGHT that the actual Uncle Ben was back and dropped this title, ha!
I've gotta dip into my Spidey 2099 back issues! STAND ASIDE!

I liked the futuristic Spider-Man from 2211, he was pretty kick ass. And the comment his daughter, or should I say "Hobby", made to him, "Peter Parker would be ashamed of you!"
Definitely an interesting story. And you could DEFINITELY use some of those retcon bombs for some things in current continuity.
Spidey: Hey, Norman, check out these pumpkin bombs! They're supposed to make middle aged horny men into young men again!
Norman: GIVE ME THAT, FOOL!!
*poof*
Spidey: SUCKER!!!

I don't read much regular superhero DC, save the odd Superman trade here and some Batman DK2 there.
So I can't draw comparisons to their multiverse style hi-jinks, but Il take your word for it.
Peeps here did think that it was the 616 Ben returning originally, but I don't think they still believe it’s him. Most don't read FNSM because the whole parallel universe's/ time travelling thing is a bit too FF or non-Spidey esque for them.
I dig it though, unusual is good, especially if some stuff gets retcon'd.

this bodes well aaaand not so well. if its notable that peter is against government work then he might actually lead the anti-civil war movement when cap is captured. he could break him out or something! thatd be so cool
BUT not boding well... "peter parker" is obviously a famous name. so maybe his unmasking sticks... :down Although i am tempted to see how its all dealt with.

Remember this is a parallel universe not the 616. So whatever happens in the 616 universe in Civil War may not have any affect on the parrallel universe. They are completely different

I like the idea of parallel universes as a way of retconning away the poor stories. I've explained my theory on a number of threads, but I'll go through them again, and before anyone moans about parallel universes being not "street-level" enough for Spidey or too cosmic - surely it would be worth having one if it rids us of the debacle of sins past?
Anyway, It seems the alternate future universe hobgoblin has found a way to transend different universes and is killing off each version of Spider-man he(she?) comes across. Hobgoblin implies as much at the end of FNSM #8. Maybe a combination of this parallel universe hopping and universes 'merging' as indicated by 'Hobby' in FNSM #9 has allowed certain aspects of other universes to creep into the 616 universe. A direct result of which has changed some past events, which in turn has altered the memories of some 616 characters.
With this information in mind, what if in a parallel world, gwen stacy wasn't Peter's girlfriend and did have a fling with Norman resulting in twins, a fling that that universe's MJ knew about. At one of these universe merging moments the parallel universe twins appeared in the 616 universe.
This would preserve the memory/reputation of the 616 Gwen and MJ, as she would only have retropective memories created once the twins had appeared. This would also help explain away the twins actions and memories, how they were born, their DNA and why Norman hadn't mentioned them before - he had retropective memories added when they arrived.

so ur basically saying sins past wasnt only a retcon, but a in-marvel retcon with a in-marvel way of explaining it through hobgoblin. that wont happen but itd be nice. however, how would this then stop it? its now part of 616. anyway its too specific for the insane hobgoblin of 2211 surely?
UK_Stu

Heh. Molested. What's even more funny is that I wouldn't be surprised if Quesada announced a new storyline where Pete remembers repressed memories of Uncle Ben touching his "no-no" place.
Then I could understand Spider-Man fans reacting venomously and threatening to drop all of Marvel's books a heck of a lot better. Heh.
But that word isn't molested, however, and if you've read Civil War # 2 then you know what it is...and it's the coolest thing I've ever seen!
