Well if you are just getting into Spider-man, I suggest the Marvel Knights line. It isn't that hard of a title to understand if you haven't been following comics for awhile. Ultimate Spider-man is a great title that if you are kinda confused with the regular Marvel universe then you can read Ultimate to get a break. Amazing is the core Spider-man title out there and revolves around the Civil war. Keep in mind that if you read Civil War, there are alot of other titles that tie in to the book. The Civil War core title is very bare bones and if you don't read other titles then you might not understant. Any back issues of Amazing Spider-man you can find from the 100's-200's-300's at your local comic store are a good place to start. You'll get alot of info from these area's and are usually very cheap and common.

Crap, I almost forgot. Unless you really collect the books for value or personal pleasure, go for some trades. They save you a buttload of money.

Essential Spider-Man Volumes 1 to 7 are out. They have lots of issues proabnly 30 or so I think in them for 10 -15 US dollars.
The problem is that they are in Black and White, but I still suggest u get it if u want to read up on all the stories that have happenedin the past for a good price.

You can get them in color with the Marvel Masterworks collection. They were released in the early 90's I think but in the past couple of years they re-released them. I think they have the first 50-60 Spidey issues out now. They come in sets of 10 issues and one annual per collection.

I strongly suggest that u get the Spider-Man essentials . In the first seven volums it has every amazing spider-man issue from #1-#160 with annuals and other issues that fit in.
which is like the Golden Age of Spidey! :)
There is also Peter Parker: The amazing Spider-Man collected in the essentials in seperate volumes!!!

Those should do you fine. Once you start reading more and more you will discover what you like or don't like and it will become easier to find other trades and books to tie into the stories that you like.

Ultimate Spider-man is good starter read too just to kick you off. And once you've become a connoisseur, then pickup the true classics by Stan Lee .

^^ Kraven's Last Hunt is a great read. Also, anything you can find from the Lee/Romita era is golden. Issues 30-60's is my favorite. Also you like ^^ you might want to pick up the volume #1 of Ultimate Spider-man. It's got a more modern twist on Spider-man.
