According to Jon Favreau Jim Rhodes will appear in the first Iron Man. Who should play him?

Jamie Fox, Micheal Jai White, Tyrese Gibson to name a few.

I'd think Fox name is still too big for this film. I really have no interest in Tyrese doing the role. MJW, as with most black superhero roles...I can see that.

I think we can do better than Tyrese. Sorry, but I can't stand that S.O.B..
Jamie Fox doesn't make a good action hero (see Stealth).

A lot of cast Rhodey has to do with who is cast as Tony. I think they need to be around the same age. That said, I can see a handful of candidates.
Michael Jai White: Look wise, he's Rhodey ripped straight from the comics. But with all due respect, he's not the greatest actor, just a passable one.
Henry Simmons: Though I'd much rather see him get Luke Cage, he could definitely play Rhodey. Great presence, commanding voice.
Shemar Moore: A little lighter than Jim is usually colored, but other than that, has the look. He's a solid actor. Rhodey has at times been written as a bit of a player, and Shemar could definitely highlight that part of the character. I think Jim as a character is 'harder' than most of his roles, I'm not 100% sure if he can deliver that part of the character.
Mehki Phifer: I think he's a very good actor, woefully underrated. I think he can definitely play the role well.
Derek Luke or Omar Epps might work as well.
Jamie's probably not an option. If he was too big to take the lead in Luke Cage, why would he want a supporting part in Iron Man?
Tyrese? Christ, no. I don't want him near any superhero. I'm hoping and praying Cage falls through on him.
Ice Cube, I like, but not for this particular role.

Agreed, plus it opens the door for a spin-off franchise.
I like either Micheal Jai White, or Omar Epps, both would be great Jim Rhodes,IMO.

Terence Howard. Man can act, no questions there, and I'd rather see someone a bit older than Tyrese, Jamie Foxx, Taye Diggs etc...
I vaguely recall he was being mentioned for a role in John Singleton's Luke Cage, opposite Tyrese, is that still going ahead? I'd rather he do Iron Man than Luke Cage!

While I agree that Terrence Howard is quite an actor, I've got to say that at the moment I'm pretty much tired of seeing him. But hey...Ironman is still two years away. Maybe if Howard isn't in every movie between now and then I'll change my mind.

Morris Chestnut would be a damn good choice. I can't believe I didn't think of him!! In fact, he's now my #1, he's got eveything Rhodey needs. He's got the look, he's very talented, and has shown a solid range, doing dramas, comedies and action flicks in his career. As he's an established lead, so that if War Machine became a focal point in a sequel, you know he can carry his part of the film.
http://img335.imageshack.us/img335/5899/morrischestnut23zj.jpg
Terrence Howard as Rhodey seems wrong to me. He's not athletic enough, too light skinned. I'm not saying it's all about look, but if you have several viable candidates, talented actors who look or look close to the way the character is traditionally depicted, I see no need to go with a guy who looks nothing like the character.

That's Luke Cage to me.
Since Tony Stark will probably be a relative unknown (ALA Hugh Jackman pre X-Men), you can't cast Jim Rhodes with a more famous actor (ALA Will Smith).
Two unknowns with presence and huge acting chops work for me. Then, throw the entire budget in to the FX.

Yes, that's true. But the good news is there's been no real news about Cage for months, (IIRC, The last true update was during the premiere of Hustle and Flow, where Singleton said he wnated Terence Howard for Diamondback, the script was being tweaked, and that if he can't do it his way, he won't do it at all). Singleton has admitted there's been no motion on the film from New Line's end, and Marvel's dead quiet, leading me to believe that New Line will let Cage pass and Marvel is simply waiting to get the rights back.

Jim isn't that big of a guy. MCD cuts too large and imposing a profile for Rhodey, IMHO. I mean, just think if he became War Machine, that would have to be some big armor! Rhodey should be around Tony's size so that it's plausible that the armor can fit both of them.
Brian White (The Shield, Mr. 3000) could be another candidate.

http://www.marveldatabase.com/wiki/index.php/James_Rhodeshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_MachineHeight: 6'1" Weight: 210 lbs (95 kg) Eyes: Brown Hair: Brown James Rupert Rhodes was a pilot in the United States Marines stationed in Afganistan during the U.S. military involvement in the War on Terror. Blasted out of the sky by enemy rockets, Rhodes managed to land in one piece and was attempting to get his craft airworthy when inventory Tony Stark, clad in his Iron Man armor, happened by. Stark had just completed his original armor, had avenged his fellow prisoner, and was trying to make his way through the jungle to the American defense perimeter. Attacked by the Taliban, Iron Man proved to Rhodes they were on the same side, and Rhodes allowed him to drain the helicopter's batteries to recharge his armor. The two then trekked through the jungle together, finely discovering a hidden enemy rocket base. Stealing an enemy helicopter, they destroyed the base, and flew to the nearest American encampment. Before leaving Afghanistan for the United States, Stark offered Rhodes a job as a pilot as soon as his military stint was over. After a succession of other jobs, Rhodes finally accepted Stark's offer and became his personal pilot and chief aviation engineer. While working at Stark International, Rhodes aided Iron Man in his battles against such foes as the Roxxon Oil Company, Justin Hammer, the Dreadnoughts, and Obadiah Stane. ***Please note slight update in the war.***See above links for full history for everyoneGet an unknown!!!

By the way, for those of you who don't know...in order to be a pilot in the Marines, you have to be an officer which means you have to have a college degree unless you were a Marine Mustang. This means, that in all liklihood, Rhody was 21 when he graduated college, got commissioned as an officer at age 22 with a six year pilot commitment to the Marines which puts him at 28 when his commitment was up. Bear in mind that Tony is 15 when he graduates Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and inherits Stark at 21. Let's say he goes to Afghanistan after a couple of years at the helm of Stark, that makes him 25, he gets hurt and captured at 26. This means that both Tony and Rhody are about the same age and less than thrity years old, so let's stop picking these freakin' old actors!!Let's do a little analysis first and the movie would be amazing!

No way...No offense to Jai White, but I don't prefer actors that have been superheroes and/or sidekicks in other films to play Jim...I'd prefer a more dramatic actor like Brian White.

I thought about Morris Chestnut, but I didn't think that he could carry the role with the right dramatic charisma.

I thought about Hill Harper, but he's only 5'9".

The good thing about Derek Luke is that he might be the best aged actor for the part, but I don't really "see" him as Rhodes. Not even as much so as Terrence Howard.

Nobody will remember Jai's other hero performance and out of all the candidates he's the only one with experience, plus he looks exactly like rhodes should look, has the voice too. he's perfect.

The other thing about MJW is his age. I think he's a little too old for role...He'll be 40 by the time of production.
I guess it just depends on how old they're looking for in Rhodes...
He's almost 40, and he still stays ripped:

Anybody think of Blair Underwood? Only drawback is he's 42. I know some of us are thinking younger.

I mentioned him earlier. I think he's one of the more solid picks for the role. He's not big-time, yet everyone "knows" him. Good dramatic actor and could carry a film on his own. But, like you said, he might be too old for the part and I agree with you.

Has Derek Luke been suggested yet? I think that might be a good fit. He's the right age(32 I think), he's got talent and has received acting awards, and he's got the look:

If we're going for mid-thirties Rhodey with an early-thirties Tony I'd say he's a great choice if they don't go with Howard.

Well I'd say that he's far closer to the "rugged military man" look that a lot of people want for Rhodes than Howard is. And even though he's a really good actor, he isn't a superstar so he wouldn't cost a boat-load of money. Howard may not cost a lot yet either but I'm sure that oscar nomiation will increase his asking price.

I hope the powers to be look at some of these guys before they might give the part to Terrence Howard. To me he just does not look anything like Jim Rhodes, more like Tony.
