View Full Version : What's the last comicbook movie you watched?

And when was it? Any publisher, any format. Must actually be based on a comicbook. TV show episodes don't count. Animated movies like Ultimate Avengers & Mask of the Phantasm, do.

Watched Hulk today. Always impresses me, but it was completely the wrong film for the target audience. The action scenes are not exciting enough, the Hulk never feels in danger.
The only part in the movie that actually feels like the Hulk is the epilogue in South America. It's so perfect, the whole movie should have been that way. Not that I don't like the existing movie, but it's the wrong movie.

I sometimes find myself wondering, had the movie been released another time of year, would the reception have been different?

Yeah. Or if the audience knew they were seeing a sombre, character-driven sci-fi drama.

I don't see a distinction. You release a movie on June 23rd w/the name of a well-known comic book charcter on the marquee, people are by & large gonna expect an action movie.
One funny thing that was pointed out to me, is that even the TV show was, for its time, a sombre, character-driven drama. The show wasn't about the Hulk; it was about David trying to find some semblance of a normal life.

Batman Returns.
Entirely too Gothic for my tastes, but Max Shreck is a hell of a villain. Michelle Pfeiffer's performance as Catwoman = the best Batman villain yet (counting Begins).
It has some great quotes:
"Eat floor. High fiber."
"Bruce Wayne? Why are you dressed as Batman?"
"Bottom line: she tries to blackmail me, I'll throw her out a higher window."
"Security? Who let Vicki Vale into the Batcave? I'm sitting there working; I turn around, there she is. 'Oh hi, Vick - come on in.'"

Yeah, but the Hulk trailers and advertising screamed, "Huge action movie!"

Very, very true. Universal did a horrendous job of marketing the movie; they were selling a product that Ang Lee wasn't making. But I think the marketing & the time frame kind of went hand in hand.

The best and only true superhero comicbook movie: Spiderman 2.
I get giddy just watching the trailer for SPM3.
A movie done by a fanboy, for fanboys.
In a world full of comicbook films driven by director egos, board room and Hollywood politics, thank God for Sam Raimi.

Much as I loved Spider-Man 2, a lot of people would disagree with you. And not just the ones who hate the Spidey films. Mark Steven Johnson is a fanboy, & you'd be hard pressed to find more than 10 people who'll say they liked "Daredevil".

Superman The Movie
Every time I pull that movie back out and watch it, it jumps to the top of my list. I think I may have to leave it there. I still have vivid memories of seeing it in the theater as a little kid. A lot of people my age talk about Star Wars as such a giant event of their youth. For me it was Superman. I was too young to read comics at the time and didn't know much about any Superhero, even Superman (and you know he is the first comic book hero we all learn of). But that moment is so etched into my mind. I remember it being so incredibly packed. In fact, I had to sit on my Dad's shoulders waiting to get into the auditorium, just to stay out of the crowd. And now I can't watch that film without hearing the crowd scream and laugh in the back of my mind.
When I became old enough to read comics, I never got into DC, just Marvel. But I have to acknowledge how great that film was. Sure, it has a few flaws. Turning back time by spinning the Earth in reverse is really hard to swallow...but you have performances from Marlon Brando, Glen Ford, Gene Hackman and a perfectly cast Christopher Reeve, as well as probably one of the best and most memorable film scores in film history. And the film took as much in the way of caution to explain the logic behind everything as Batman Begins did. There has always been a reason why that film is the yardstick by which other Superhero films are measured.
Like John Williams had said, there may be future films of this character but they will never get it quite as right. He sure was right about that.

Daredevil: Director's Cut
Much better than the theatrical cut. I really have to respect Mark Steven Johnson for what he tried to do; it's clear that he has nothing but love and appreciation for Daredevil as a character. FOX really screwed him bigtime.
Still, Kingpin is heavily flawed. Even with the extra scene (brutally killing two of his guards) Michael Clarke Duncan is just not intimidating enough. He's got the size and the voice, but the mannerisms just aren't Kingpin enough to me.
I also can't ignore the little details:
Matt having a tricked-out apartment despite the fact that he makes very little money.
Young Matt's bicycle kick.
The sandbags in Elektra's apartment - who's dropping them?
Crappy digital Daredevil/Bullseye motorcycle kick/flip.... thing.
The flaming DD logo in the subway - as if Daredevil would actually take the time to do that.
Said flaming DD logo not being reflected properly in Ben Urich's glasses.
Daredevil looking at the camera after blocking Bullseye's last shruiken with his billy club.
Okay, maybe I'm nitpicking - fact is, the movie is still heavily flawed. The deleted Lisa Tazio subplot almost makes up for it, but not quite.
I'd give it a B-, but that doesn't seem fair given the fact that all of the performances are more than solid. Ben Affleck was pretty uneven, but overall good. Jennifer Garner was almost perfect as Elektra. Duncan wasn't awful as the Kingpin. Colin Farrel was a fantastic Bullseye. Jon Favreau stole every scene he was in. Coolio killed as Daunte Jackson. David Keith gave one of the best supporting performances in a comic book film as Jack 'The Devil' Murdock. Scott Terra impressed as young Matt Murdock.
Only person I didn't really like was Joe Pantoliano as Ben Urich. The earring, the hat, the slight swagger.... just not Urich to me.

Batman Forever last week-end. I hadn't seen it for several years, and have not seen the last one yet, but I did buy the Batman anthology set for all the great extras.
Schumacher obviously treads the line between dark & serious (Burton / Nolan) and flashy & corny (TV series). The flashy colors make for some great shots, but also weird ideas (machine guns with neons and a fluo-faced Two-Face).
His version is not quite totally parodic (TV), and has some good moments, but it is too over-the-top.
Obviously, I prefer Burton & Nolan's visions, but, taken on its own, Batman Forever is fun enough to be enjoyed, with one big flaw, though: the constant exaggeration, overdoing, overacting, ... Jim Carey and even Tommy Lee Jones (!) do get on your nerves at times; it's just too much. Pity.
One thing I really liked: the way Robin is handled.
I don't particularly like the idea of Batman having a sidekick, especially a young one. Granted, there's this parallel between them, but still, I can't imagine Bruce Wayne / Batman training a young boy / teenager and letting him fight crime with him, risking his life and leading such a life.
That's what I liked in Batman Forever: he empathizes with Dick, but doesn't willfully make him his "partner" in crime-fighting. I like the idea that Dick (an adult, too) forces himself on Batman, pries into his secrets, discovers his identity, insists on being his partner and so forth, till the point Batman feels resisting the idea is pointless and that there might be some good potential there.
