I have a laptop and the HD is just about full(I'd rather not say with what).

What brand of external HD is the best?

Also how much do they run?

I personally wouldn't recommend anything but Seagate. External or Not.

As for Price, it really depends on how much space you want, and where you go.

I have a Western Digital and it's been a year and everything is going good with it. The best bet is to go to Best Buy or Circuit City's website and poke around and read customer reviews of some of the externals.

As an aside, does anyone know anything about booting an alternate OS from an external HD?

Honestly....
Hard Drives are a dime a dozen. Each brand has a bad batch every once in awhile.

I would got with either Maxtor, Seagate or Western Digital. Those are the top three.

I have had drives of all types last for YEARS.

As for an external, are you looking for a builtin external drive? or possibly getting a USD External Drive Case, then getting yourself a Hard Drive?

I bought a USB external drive for $20 and a 250GB WD I think for about $100 online.

Works great.
