Okay, from what we know Tobey, Kirsten, and Sam will not likely be returning for any future Spider-Man films. Maybe Raimi will, but whatever. My ideas relies that whoever directs the next movie will be at least moderately competent. Maybe I'm asking for too much.
Honestly, if they just recast everybody and pretend nothing happened in the next film it would probably be easier all around. Maybe make the story happen a few years later as a kind of band-aid. But my idea is for a movie that would be a transition from the first three to the next series.
Continuing the franchise without the people who made it great in the first place will likely be an unpopular decision, so I figure why not make even more unpopular one, to bring in a modified version of Ben Reily. A cameo by Tobey McGuire and Kirsten Dunst would probably help smooth the transition but my idea is really kind of half-a$$ed at this point so here I go.
Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) is an old ruthless man, and like a lot of men near death he doesn't want to die, so he devotes his vast fortune into researching ways to stave off the reaper. His earlier fundings in the Ozcorp super soldier program ended in shambles but he has retained quite a bit of the technology left over from it and wears a harness device to keep him healthy and has been modifying it for some time. (retracting wings, flight/levitation, explains the color and history etc.) Now he is interested in cellular regeneration (effective immortality) and who should he get to develop this technology other than a man who wants to grow his own arm back, Dr. Curt Conners. (Dylan Baker has been excellent, he deserves more screen time)
Now I have a problem in trying to figure out how to take Peter Parker out of the picture, but I'm thinking about him getting his legs blown off/back broken (injoke harhar) saving some kids or something. Either way Peter is out of the super-hero game. (This will probably piss off fans, I reall can't think of anything better, maybe if they spend half of the budget to have him do something like the train sequence in Spider-Man 2)
Anyway, Dr. Conners uses some kind of lizard genetic machine or chemical to grow his arm back, but the process continues uncontrollably until he becomes a Lizard creature. (Keep his appearance in the dark so when he is fully revealed it still has the WOW factor) In the chaos, he knocks over a sample of Peter Parker's blood (maybe a sample taken in SM3?) The blood gets zapped too and a damaged clone emerges. This is where we introduce the actor who will be the new Spider-Man.
Now we get into something new. If a man can be bitten by a spider and "remember" its abilities genetically, could a clone retain the memories of Peter Parker? (maybe bring this in when Conners experiments on himself, the Lizard has a reptile's memories, Ben Reilly has Peter Parker's) The clone remembers living his life as Peter, even though his face looks different, he doesn't know he is a clone.
The Lizard goes on a rampage and Peter Parker/Spider-Man swoops into save the day but is crippled in the fight, Ben swoops in (organic web-shooters hah!) and manages to kill or at least drive off the Lizard. Ben sees Peter and is logically suprised to see a man with his face. Ensue explanation where Ben realizes he is a clone and Peter passes the title of Spider-Man onto Ben, but Ben has a torn identity and now has to figure out what he will do with his life. (Maybe Ben can hook up with Betty Brant as her character was supposed to be Peter's origional girlfriend and this has been ignored in the movies so far)
Ben could wonder around trying to figure out who he is, scare a couple of people at the Daily Bugle by trying to insist that he is Peter Parker. The real Peter could also use the appearance of Ben to prove to the world he isn't Spider-Man and that he was hurt trying to take pictures of Spider-Man like he always does.
Anyway, Toomes figures out what happened to Conners, possibly by torturing a temporarily de-transformed Conners and figures out that if he can absorb Ben, he can gain the returned youth/immortailty he so desires. (Toomes could also figure out that Peter is the real Spider-Man and force Ben to come to his lair or else reveal to the world Peter's identity) Mybe Toomes kidnaps Betty and much like the Green Goblin puts her in danger to flush out Ben.
A fight ensues, maybe Ben gets his vitality partially drained but fights it off, in midfight Conners (much like Doc Ock) redeems himself by attacking Toomes, causing them both to die, Ben walks away.
Ultimately the message for the movie is about a Man's struggle for identity coupled with the responsibilty of being a super-hero and almost a tribute to the previous films.
edit: God, I just realised I've basically written fan-fiction. The shame.
