With all of the hooplah surrounding events such as DC's OYL, let's say you had to take a break from everything comics for a year!

But there is a small catch to the deal. Say your wife/parents/income/personal dignity/etc limits you to only 5 comic book subscriptions for an entire year; what books do you choose and why?

Not counting minis...

Fables - One of the, if not the, best book out there now.
Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes - Probably my favorite superhero team book. That and I'm a fan of the Legion.
Runaways - It's still a superhero-ish book, but in a different style than the mainstream ones. Plus, BKV is teh roxxorz!!1
Conan - Gotta have some Conan...though we will see if Mignola can keep it as good as Busiek's, though I have faith he can.
JLA - Since I would be unable to read about Supes, Flash, Batman, etc in their solo titles...this would be the next best thing.

Amazing Spider-Man (I have issue 1 to current... no sense ending an over 500 issue run)
HellBlazer (I just love John Constantine)
Rex Mundi (arguably the BEST comic you're NOT reading :( )
Invincible (this book has had me hooked since issue #1)

That's about it... :)

Only five books huh?...that's kinda hard. But I'll try...

(excluding limited series, because once a series ends, you're left with another slot to fill, and then it gets confusing...so even though I love "52" to death and "Civil War" is cool, I'll stick with the more ongoing titles.)

1. Action Comics
2. Superman
- Because Superman's my favorite...so I'll have to have his books.
3. Astonishing X-Men - The flagship X-title?...that goes without saying...
4. Green Lantern - One of early favorites when I was a kid...and I'm still excited that Hal is back...
5. The Amazing Spider-Man - my second favorite Marvel title...just behind the X-Men

It's not perfect, but for the moment, this is my five.

It puts me in a tight situation but I'd have to go w/both Batman titles as of right now. Grant Morrison on Batman & Rags drawing TEC, I just can't pass on either.

Superman's REALLY good right now, but I would bet it'd drop off a little at some point. Not into new Flash enough, so both it & WW aren't important must-reads.

Marvel's stuff is all over the map, personally. I couldn't begin to choose a title there. Vertigo's go so much great stuff going on but I prefer buying those titles in Trade form, i.e., Fables, Y:The Last Man, ...

I do like the new Conan, but I can wait for trades w/that too.

Which brings me back to DC b/c I LOVE what they're doing w/the OYL stories!! I'd have to chose b/w Catwoman, Green Arrow, Firestorm, & Nightwing. DC has been consistent in releasing TPB's of Green Arrow & Nightwing, so maybe I'll go with Firestorm since it's been so consistently good as of late. Maybe the new Justice League as well.

So that pins me in a corner with:
-Batman
-TEC
-Firestorm
-Justice League
and I need more variety with the last one...too tough!
-I don't know, I should have made it 10 (but then where would the fun be:)

Captain America, maybe?

Wow this is insanelt difficult :p

Y: The Last Man - A refreshing change of pace from everything else I read. Brian K. Vaughn is an excellent writer, and the entire concept/execution of Y: The Last Man really breathes new life into Vertigo for me.

JLA (starting with Meltzer's relaunch I suppose) - This way I can get all the major DC heroes in one title!

The Ultimates - Just a great book. I get my Avengers fix, as well as some great political content.

Astonishing X-Men - Whedon is just effin' amazing. 'Nuff said.

Ex Machina - Just a great title.

Damn! I can't believe I had to cut out All-Star Superman. Man, that would be hard. It's bad enough cutting out everything else, but I really wanted to put in All-Star Supes, and Ultimate Spider-Man someplace :(

JLA - Once it restarts Ultimates - But it ends soon, is there a gap between volume three and four? Astonishing X-Men - Lovin' it All Star Superman - best book out there Flash - Cos i always liked reading wheres wally Also if the thing was still around id probaly bump flash for that.

The reason I omitted All-Star Superman is b/c you only get one issue every two months, and if I have to sacrifice that much, I might as well get my year's worth where i can.

1. Runaways
2. Daredevil
3. Action Comic
4. Batman
5. Sensational Spider-Man

And I've just realized I could not stand buying only five comics.

I'd go with:

Conan
Fell
Fables
Astonishing X-Men
And fourth would have The Thing, but since it's cancelled, I'll go with Captain America

Star Wars Legacy: I have to know what happens next!
Young Avengers: The only good thing Marvel has going for it now
Legion of Superheroes: I don't really like the new title. It's like supergirl is better than the other Legionnaires. ANYWAY... Still one the best.
Batman: So psyched for the Son of the Bat.
Green Lantern: Favorite hero.

The Leaguer

If Jordan is your favorite hero, you must be disappointed with his new series.

Oh, who am I kidding, he's always been written that poorly!

2. Invincible
3. Teen Titans
4. Astonishing X-Men

5th would either be Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man or Fell. Both are consistent "Pick of the Week" books, and just keep getting better.

I would include Fables and Y: The Last Man, but I get them in trades. We're allowed to buy trades, right?

The Leaguer

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man? Lame.

SouLeSS

It would change with the week.

Every week I'de only buy 5 comics, the top 5 I would be getting as is.

Considering it's a stretch to get more than 5 comics that I can't wait for (the rest are just kind of "well I'm here, I got the money, so why not"), 5 a week wouldn't be that hard.

Now if you're saying stick with only 5 titles and nothing else...

Nightwing
Robin
Detective Comics
Batman
And AMS(assuming 52 doesn't count)

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man? Lame.

I wanted a Spider-Man book, and it's got the best artist and best writer as far as Spidey books go. Sensational is interesting but the art is spastic, Amazing is so wrapped up in this The Other/Civil War crap that it's a burden to get through an issue, and Ultimate, while a good read, is predictable a lot of the time. I've never read a Marvel Adventures Spider-Man and never will, and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane is fun, but not really about Peter.

'Ringo and David can have my money as long as they put out quality, and so far they haven't let me down.
