Not bad. You traced over a Midnight Nation cover, obviously, but it's a good start.As an artist I can tell you with out a doubt that isn't a trace job. Even IF the poses were the same, which they aren't, the style and proportions are WAY different. As I already pointed out though, and you can tell by comparing, the poses are COMPLETELY different. Your best bet would have been to say it reminded you of the cover, but to accuse an artist of tracing, when that's not the case at all is just...well...rude...comes to mind.

Yup...Intuos 3! i love it to death...

no, actually...what i do is open up a new canvas, add a layer for sketching out how i want the layout and positioning, make that layer 50 to 20% opacity (giving it the gray look) then add a NEW layer for the clean line art. once i'm done with that i'll add layers under the line art so i can color.

What size line(s) are you using?
it depends...if i want a thick line (foreground objects) i'll use a 9, for background objects i'll use a 5, and for detailing i'll use 3.

oh DEFINITELY! haha...this is about my 3rd time tackling a Transformers drawing and the first 2 times were really just sketches. i started planning out Prime's design a while ago when pictures were still coming out and i didn't have a real good idea of how they put him together. the Prime i drew is more of a streamlined Prime while still keeping the mechanical look. as for Mikaela and Sam.....i'm proud so say the only things i needed reference on was their clothing.

i try to tell people to find their own flow, but i'm sure there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of artists out there that have a similar process to mine. the way i do it is pretty effecient....i'm not as fast as i'd like to be but that's a problem with me, personally, and not the process. hope that helps a lil' and good luck!

Wow, the coloring is turning out great! Its amazing, im still having a hard time taking my flat colors and turning into something giving them the proper dimensional type feel. You are truly capturing the mood of the drawing, im just in total envy of the progress of this pic. Maybe I should drop using fireworks and freehand, and concentrate more on photoshop.

I'm just so amazed by the skill of this work, i'm glad that your showing your progression, because I love seeing the evolution of ones work. Thanks for answering my past comments, can't wait to see more!

Great work Dorky! Although i don't know how far in your are on Megan but she doesn't look much like her. She looks real but doesn't resemble Megan. Just pointing that out in case you are trying to get her likeness. Also, im thinking you could make her hair black like she really has and keep some dark brown as lighting effect. Either way you know how to do your stuff so i'll leave it up to you bud. Good luck and great job once again! :)

Thats some great detail there champ, is there any interest in doing Prime? Blackout might be a good choice for a repaint as well.

I considered the possibility of doing an optimus prime repaint. However, the Optimus Prime figures that are out really are good looking toys, so I don't really feel like it's worth the effort (although it might be nice to add some chrome effects to his truck mode, a possibility I'd consider).

Blackout could make for a good repaint project, although my beefs with that figure lie more in it's size, rather than it's paint job. A new paint job isn't really going to change the fact that his robot size is akin to that of a deluxe class figure.

BTW dorky, I like what I'm seeing with that coloring job! :) They should have gotten you to do the cover art for the Transformers tie-in comic. :o

Great work Dorky! Although i don't know how far in your are on Megan but she doesn't look much like her. She looks real but doesn't resemble Megan. Just pointing that out in case you are trying to get her likeness. Also, im thinking you could make her hair black like she really has and keep some dark brown as lighting effect. Either way you know how to do your stuff so i'll leave it up to you bud. Good luck and great job once again! :)

Yup...Intuos 3! i love it to death...

Are you converting your sketch grey to ink over it like that to mimic pencil??
no, actually...what i do is open up a new canvas, add a layer for sketching out how i want the layout and positioning, make that layer 50 to 20% opacity (giving it the gray look) then add a NEW layer for the clean line art. once i'm done with that i'll add layers under the line art so i can color.

What size line(s) are you using?
it depends...if i want a thick line (foreground objects) i'll use a 9, for background objects i'll use a 5, and for detailing i'll use 3.

Did you use any source material to get a basis of what you wanted to approach the drawing at?
oh DEFINITELY! haha...this is about my 3rd time tackling a Transformers drawing and the first 2 times were really just sketches. i started planning out Prime's design a while ago when pictures were still coming out and i didn't have a real good idea of how they put him together. the Prime i drew is more of a streamlined Prime while still keeping the mechanical look. as for Mikaela and Sam.....i'm proud so say the only things i needed reference on was their clothing.


i try to tell people to find their own flow, but i'm sure there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of artists out there that have a similar process to mine. the way i do it is pretty effecient....i'm not as fast as i'd like to be but that's a problem with me, personally, and not the process. hope that helps a lil' and good luck!

For the glow i dont mean place it elsewhere i meant make it less wide (diameter of glow) because it gives him an odd look as if his eyes are over his helmet instead of under the blue forehead piece. I guess im trying to say it needs to be toned down so you know the eyes are deeper within the face and not overlayed on the it. That's what the glow gives off anyway, at least at this size, im sure his eyes are more detailed on the real sized image.

I see it much better now. I noticed it wasn't the glow, but the shape of the eye tha needs to be defined. Remember how in the movie he had a small thin piece of metal always over the top of his optic, acting like and eyebrow of sorts?

i outlined his eyelids there but you're right...they're not very prominent. i just don't want to add too much light to the dark side of his face (his right, our left) because it gives him a sense of wonder and danger imo. i'll see what i can do next time i work on it...

Looks awsome except that he's extremely thin. If he had more weight to his body as a whole he would have been a perfect movie design.

...i'd say i'm probably about 70 to 75% done. i still have to do the rest of the shades and highlights, then i have to add dirt, scratches, and grit, then a background, and finally some explosions. it could honestly take me another month before i'm TOTALLY complete with this illustration.

This looks absolutely fantastic. The only part that bothers me is Prime's eyes. I think you need to cut back on the glow a little bit because he looks to wide eyed right now. I think in the movie they gave him a little bit of an eye lid so he can show a bit of emotion. Right now he looks like a deer in headlights. Everything else though I think is superb and keep up the great work!
