View Full Version : Who's Your Favorite Rock Guitarist?
Green Lantern
07-13-2006, 12:42 AM
Rather than debate the best (which will have Jimi Hendrix more than likely running away) I ask who is your favorite? Choose from the poll or tell us your other choices since you can only fit 25 on there :(
My top five:
Eddie Van Halen - this guy got me to pick up a guitar. It was a dream to see him live.
Eric Clapton - There's a reason he's called GOD
John Petrucci - Amazingly technical, brilliant musician
Hughie Thomasson - The Outlaws/Lynyrd Skynyrd so underrated it hurts.
Allen Collins - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Guy writes one of the most praised solos of all time but never gets the recognition...
And yes, I know the threads been done before, but I don't want just another "Lol of curs Jimi he cAn plAy wit t33th loz" thread.

He's up there because he is generally regarded as the best. Hendrix is worlds above Kravitz, that's for sure.
It's not a race matter, it's about who out of rock's most prominent guitarists is the best. Hendrix is simply the only African American guitarist who has scored a highly prominent place in the rock elite. That's why he was on the poll.
Kravitz has his own little niche, but not as a guitarist.

Yeah, he's always been a very gifted guitarist. He's known to do some really impressive **** with his talent in a live setting, but a lot of his music focuses on the songwriting elements and kind of downplays his abilities on that instrument for some reason.

ROCK guitarist. ROCK not BLUES. If it were who is the best BLUES guitarist, the poll would be littered with African American guitarists: Muddy, Robert, Howlin, Skip, Son, and B.B. to name but a few. All of those men were/are immensely talented musicians, but they don't fit in a poll about ROCK guitarists. Did they influence rock? Absolutely. Are they rock? No. They are the blues.

He's a decent player, but I wouldn't call him amazing. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, in honor of George's posthumous induction. :) It was an odd choice, as you've got two of the three remaining Traveling Wilburys... and Prince, which is a very divergent group there, but it really worked out.

I've heard some of *****es Brew as well as Kind Of Blue, and they were both ****ing awesome. Once I'm able to drag myself out of my classic rock phase (which probably will eventually happen soon), I'll pick up some of his stuff.
Oh, while I like Miles a lot, Louis Armstrong was even better.
I believe that should buy MIles IN the Sky before *****es Brew, it's not as experimental.
and Ornette Coleman's "friends and Neighbours"is also a good Jazz Record for Rock fans.

My favorite Rock guitarist is Kevin Shields.
He is not on that list, hence , that list os of the devil.
see I never get these threads, they have all these guys from the 60's and 70's and every once in a while they'll throw in slash from guns and roses?
WTF? people  and Neil Young? I use to cinfuse him with neil diamond when I was little and ALways wondered why he was so much better when he sang that coming to America song.
I closing
LIST= Devil
that is all.First off "why are all these guys from the 60s and 70s?" John Petrucci - Dream Theater mainly 90s-00s; Jasin Todd - Shinedown 00s; Kirk Hammett 80s-00s; Dimebag 90s-00s (:(); Randy Rhodes 80s; Zakk Wylde 90s-00s; Jerry Cantrell 90s. If you're gonna criticize a list for being too inclusive of one era be sure that you're right in your accusation. Also for the most part, in the nineties thanks to rap metal and bubble gum punk, the guitar solo went the way of the dinosaurs. It's just now starting to return to songs. The solo is what makes a good guitarist great, which is why most lists of the greats ARE specific to 60s-80s.
Second: You're just plain and simple naive if you think that Neil Young is not a great guitarist. Cortez the Killer and Cinnamon Girl are great songs with blazing solos.
Gotcha!
How about Santana?
Or Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Yngwie Malmstein? As I said before, you can only put 25 options in a poll; so sadly some greats are left out. I put in some of my favorites; mainly to get people to give their music a try. Everyone's heard of Santana; how many people know Hughie Thomasson?:(

But I would hardly call him anything great. Just my opinion though.

When Ynwgwie first hit the scene, he was something special because he brought a style and approach to playing that no one else was really doing. Consequently, he got copied and emulated nearly to death by so many other players that he almost seems passe' today. Plus, the guys' a huge a-hole, so it's difficult to feel sorry for him and the marginalization of his career due to so many other players picking up what he started and taking it to the next level.

To me, Yngwie and other guys like him seem incredibly self indulgent, not only in their style, but in their attitude. I still won't take away anything from Malmsteen as a guitar player, as his technical skill and influence is undeniable.
I just can't bear to listen to his music.

You won't get much argument from me. There's a certain lack of soul in that kind of technically oriented playing to my ears, but I'm a blues guy and like to feel the music deep down. But, being a musician, I also can appreciate the discipline and ability it takes to play that way. I like some of his earlier stuff because it had a lot of classical elements woven into what he was doing. And he's done some work with Joe Lynn Turner on the "Odyssey" album that is still one of my favorite rock albums to this day. Turner brought a more soulful sensibility to the songwriting process and managed to make Yngwie's masturbatory playing be more relevant by forcing him to use it in a more appropriate way that complimented Turner's singing rather than ran over the top of it like Yngwie has a tendency to do to most singers.

Blackmore - 70s
Cantrell - 90s
Clapton - 70s - 00s
Collins -70s
Dimebag - 90s
Gilmour - 70s
Hammett - 80s -00s
Harrison - 60s-80s
Hendrix - 60s
May - 70s and his biggest stuff came in the 80s
Page - 70s
Perry - 70s - 00s
Petrucci - 90s - 00s
Rhodes - 80s
Richards - 60s - 00s
Satriani - 80s - 00s
Slash - 80s - 00s
Thomasson - 70s - 00s
Todd - 00s
Van Halen - mainly 80s and 90s
Vaughan - 80s
Wylde - 90s -00s
A. Young - biggest came in the 80s
N. Young - 60s-00s
Out of the artists on my lists only nine don't still perform and record on a regular basis. Out of those nine. SEVEN are DEAD. They may have been bigggest in one era, but they still transcend eras and still make music that the majority enjoy. Call me humorless if you will, but YOU were the one that came in here just to start arguments. When I made valid points YOU were the one that threw something back at me that was also invalid (Lol no Satriani or Vai list sux proves my point lol) and then when I pointed out that Satch was up there you still got on me about the lack of Vai. So what? Vai never did much for me. His mentor is much better and more talented than he ever will be, and I could (I'll say this again) only fit TWENTY FIVE options on the poll. I'm sorry, I couldn't put the hundreds of people to ever get good on the instrument on the poll, so yes I picked and chose personal favorites.

Axl Rose is the biggest has-been walking the face of the earth. He also has one of the most annoying voices in modern rock history, to be honest.
jagHis voice used to be apart of what made him and the band great and unique, but if you hear his new songs you realise that its tired and that he's no longer relevant.

I wouldn't say he's no longer relevant. GNR still has a pretty large fanbase today with many teenagers, mostly thanks to Grand Theft Auto.

Bowie not innovative? Wow. I know this is for another thread, but he was doing *everything* before anyone else was. You name it, he did it first.
Except that little fad in the late 80s where every song had a little rap interlude in it. He can't be blamed for that :oAnd even then it was one of his and Freddie's songs that started one of the biggest controversies of early rap, when Vanilla Ice ripped off Under Pressure :o

Of course, this is all personal preference. There's no need to argue about anything.I know, that's why I said it was an "absurd" thing to say instead of "What a f***ing retarded, ignorant thing to say. I wish you'd get hit by a flippin' CAR, devil-spawn!!" :)
first of all, there are many "musical geniuses" (a silly term anyway, how can you test for that, to quantify how many pounds of musical skill and inspiration they're toting around in their heads? Does Prince have 10, or 15% more "genius" than Brian Eno or Frank Zappa? or maybe he has 32% more! again, absurd) who don't ever even pursue fame. I know several musical geniuses and I'm a musical genius, but you've never heard my stuff.
Also the term "musical", is too broad. You seemed to imply that one of the factors in his genius is that he's multi-talented, can play all the instruments and is a production wizard. But I've heard, say, a violinist, that can't play any other instruments and doesn't compose a lot of his own stuff, but I still think his prowess in that one, narrow field of self-expression (the violin) qualifies him as a "musical genius".
And, as you said, it's all subjective. Some think Sonic Youth are geniuses. They don't. Some would call Depeche Mode geniuses.
I am here to tell the world, Jimmy Page is a musical Genius. So is Paul McCartney, Adrian Belew, Steve Morse...Prince too. There are many.

I am here to tell the world, Jimmy Page is a musical Genius.
I'm one of Page's biggest fans. Seriously - I have an 8 cd box set of his early session work (pre-Yardbirds) and several hundred Zeppelin bootlegs.
He's not a genius. My definition of genius hinges on originality, and many of Page's "writings" were rips (or variations) of earlier artists' work, be they bluesmen, folk players, or avant-garde / psychadelic Londoners.
Later on, as I mentioned Presence, he became more original. The last ten years, however, he's been in various Led Zeppelin cover bands - touring with Plant or the Black Crowes, they've played mostly Zeppelin tunes.
Genius is ever-changing originality. Trend setting. Did Page's guitar work set trends? Yes. It created an entire musical genre and defined a generation of people (and several generations of musicians). Was it original? Not so much. He took was was already in place and moved it several steps forward.

and this is really bizarre, how Jimmy played Blues oriented Rock, and then Robert Plant stuck pre-existing Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Willie Dixon, Ben E. King, etc. LYRICS over the music, and now people think JIMMY wasn't original.
Anyway, I disagree with your emphasis on "originality" (especially because almost nothing is original).
Nonetheless, listen to Over the Hills and Far Away in it's entirety, then Walter's Walk, then Four Sticks, then the bizarre harmonies in Misty Mountain Hop, the Rain Song, the psycho part in Whole Lotta Love.....

He may be somewhat of an ******* and bitter, but you can't deny his talent and that he's created some of the most memorable riffs in heavy metal.
He definitely doesn't get enough credit. I mean, seriously, the opening riffs for In My Darkest Hour, Holy Wars, Hangar 18, Five Magics, Ashes In Your Mouth, and etc, etc... are classic riffs and classic songs at that too.

I'm not saying he wasn't original - I'm saying he got away with stealing quite a bit of stuff early on. As the band progressed, so did it's originality - driven by Page.
Dazed and Confused was out-right stolen from Jake Holmes. Black Mountainside was outright stolen from Bert Jansch. It wasn't just the lyrics of some of the older songs that were lifted. The sound - though altered - is the same on quite a few.
If you're interested, PM me with your address. I'll send you some of the "original" material LZ used.
