View Full Version : Game developer Cliffyb(Gears of War) rips Bay over TRINO!

Some serious ownage in this letter.
And for anyone who doesn't know Cliffyb, he's a very popular pc game designer who's work includes the Unreal Tournament games and the soon to be released "Gears Of War" for the Xbox 360.
He's also a huge Transformers fan.
Here you go:
Dear Michael Bay,
Hey there! I’ve been a long time admirer of your testosterone fueled ten ton testicle spectacles ever since I was a wee lad. I feel like we’ve been running from explosions for years now, hand in hand, jumping out of the window in slow motion at the last possible second. Ah, the memories.
I liked The Island; I was one of the thirteen people in the US who went to the theater to see it. I can appreciate what you were trying to do post Bruckheimer. Do “smart explosions;” see, it’s an action movie with Beautiful People but it’s got a *message.* (Well, I could watch Scarlett read the phone book, so my feelings are a bit cloudy.)
Michael, you need to understand that you’re dealing with an entire generation of 18-35 year old males who were raised on the concept of Badass Transforming Robots. It’s beyond a fad or some Harry Potter ****. This is in our DNA. It is in our blood. Our hearts race whenever we hear that “WWWOOOWWWW WWOWWWWW WRROWW” of a robot turning into a ****ing CAR.
AND BACK!
So, today during my lunch break I happened to notice that there was numerous Transformers buzz hitting my in-box. Allegedly leaked shots of Optimus Prime in truck form.
Now, let me start by saying I’ve seen the Bumblebee ones. I understand that an effeminate Volkswagen bug just won’t translate to screen. Hey, you’ve got to change some stuff when you’re going live action, we all can’t be wearing Yellow Spandex now can we?
I can even appreciate the game that the studio is playing with “leaking” the shots and then “taking them back.” “We’ll put a shot out and then take it back and get them all hot and bothered!” (Some call it viral marketing. I call it a cocktease.)
This is Optimus Prime we’re talking about. He isn’t just the father figure to the entire Autobot community, he’s the daddy to an entire generation of men. When Ironhide was too *****y to get **** done or Perceptor was off sucking cylinder behind the Ark who do you think stepped up and showed everyone how it was done?
Optimus Mother****ing Prime.
So allow me to express my concern when I see my childhood hero “re-envisioned” as the ****ing truck from the Full Throttle Energy Drink commercial. (How much did Coke pay for that one?)
Disclaimer: Yes, I know it was based off of some later lame design that Hasbro released when they were going all plastic and ****ty post Beast Wars. (It still eats a huge bowl of *****.)
So if this is, in fact, the final design that was decided upon for our ultimate hero I have to just ask one small favor…
Please, while you’re raping my childhood in the ass, please use a little bit of lube. I’m not even asking for that silky KY sprayable window cleaner ****. I’m asking for maybe take a second away from burying my childhood’s face in the burlap pillow on the floor of the dusty barn to maybe hock up a tiny little glob of phlegm and adhere it to the tip of your baby raping schlong.
Also, since we’re on this subject, while you’re pounding away and the jets are flying overhead and explosions are going off try to not go too deep. I really don’t need my childhood having a colostomy bag attached as it tries to overcome its emotional scars.
I’m fragile, Michael. I’m terrified to go online or check my email. I have a feeling that tomorrow I’ll wake up and I’ll see Soundwave as a ****ing Ipod or Prowl as a Segway. I’ll then peek back into the barn and find out that you’ve moved on from my childhood’s freshly shredded anus to the newly opened colostomy bag hole.
And that would be wrong.
So please, Michael, don’t **** this up. Because you’re dealing with a very sensitive generation of fanboys. Put the kid gloves on.
And at least have the decency to give us a warning before you donkey punch our childhood in the back of the head.
Sincerely,
Cliff Bleszinski

Yeah I'd hope for something a little less inflammatory at this point since nobody knows for sure what the deal with Optimus is. I don't think a guy like that really has any need to author a letter that sounds more like a high school rant than something a Hollywood director would read an take seriously.
Missed opportunity.

Generation X, man.
I mean, folks even formed a NYC "youth group," which devolved into a notorious gang, in New York City in the late 80's called the "Decepticons." All the top leadership had TF names.
It is possibly the first and only NYC gang that went cross-borrough... which was a huge accomplishment because NYC krews are traditionally block and neighborhood oriented.
TF was (culturally) huge for some of us. Which is why we can't fathom a lot of the changes.

Agreed...
For those that are casual fans or renewed fans (of which MOST are) or even just a GenX'er looking back...the changes will be harder to swallow.
For those that have been adament fans from the start and have been there for every incarnation/re-adaptation or redux, its' very easy to see the changes and accept them as either okay, acceptable, or needed.
And for those that have jumped into TF's within the last 10 years, it's even easier to accept, cause TF's have changed dozens of times over with in the last 8 years...almost every year a new TF main storyline/cartoon/comic comes about..sometimes 2-3 a year actually. Change is just part of the current developments of TF's as a Franchise.
And Hasbro is looking right now to inject new blood into the Transformers Franchise...that's why they've been riding with this new Movie Story and Toyline. Hasbro wnats new stuff...something to carry TF's a bit farther in a new direction, while still appeasing everyone from 8-35...and that is a daunting task and quite hard to accomplish.

I agree.
But it begs the question: if the original Gen X fans are probably harder to please and the newer fans and a-to-z fans are easier, why not cater to the original fans? Seems to me that the latter crop would be happy with ANY "Transformers" movie. I dunno.

The only thing I can think of is that they want to pull elements from everything, so they nod to everyone around the table, trying to cater to every facet of the Multi-Versed TF Franchise:
1.) Such as, give G1'ers the core characteristics/personas for each Autobot and probably a couple Decepticons (Megatron & Starscream).
2.) Update the Alt Modes and use them to bridge as many storylines/universes as possible...Ironhide a truck, Prime still being a Semi, Jazz a cool sportscar, and Starscream still a Fighter Jet.
3.) Make a story that combine elements from multiple storylines; "Energon Cube" being a new form of the Creation Matrix, Megatron being captured by humans, Decepticons looking for multiple things, Autobots trying to hide and yet still protect humanity when possible, and Transformers fighting the military in multiple conflicts.
4.) Give a visual look that is new and unique, yet still could be used as a Transformers look, like a combo of multiple looks. In a lot of ways this new TF look feels like Trans-Tech (the cancelled sequel to Beast Machines in which G1 and BM were going to come together with Optimus Prime, Jazz, Starscream, and Soundwave working with/fighting characters like Cheetor, Silverbolt, and Tankor).

Well said. But I think there's a serious danger that by eliminating a lot of the visual icons, Gen X'ers will lose any semblance of affinity towards the movie. And, they (for the most part) make up the demographic that drives these movies.
The Hulk (which bore abosolutely no resemblance to The Hulk most of us grew up with- The Bill Bixby series- not even a nod) and Godzilla are perfect examples.
On the other hand, iconic respect hasn't helped Superman Returns much (to my surprise). So, I dunno.

All sorts of "krews" sprouted up at different schools. Most affiliated with the main one out of Brooklyn Tech. For instance, the Deceptinettes were out of Graphic Arts and Printing in Hell's Kitchen Manhattan.
The Autobots did exist... I think comprised of kids like in Park West (also in Hell's Kitchen) that were tired of getting robbed by the Decepts.

Iconic visual representation is important, can't argue that.
But I also believe that the film makers aren't straying that far from what people will recognize...
Bumblebee is still Yellow and Black, with his helmet spike and a form of his horns. Prime is still a Semi Truck, long-nose or not. Jazz is still a sportscar (rumored to still be white). Starscream is still a Fighter Jet.
It just all depends on how the characters' personalities themselves, particularly the Autobots, are handled. Supposedly they'll still be the G1-based Autobots we all love, and as long as that stays in place and the characters interact well and feel like their G1 counterparts I believe it'll hold up.

Typical fanboy whimpering at its best.

The Hulk (which bore abosolutely no resemblance to The Hulk most of us grew up with- The Bill Bixby series- not even a nod) and Godzilla are perfect examples.
which was a mistake on the film makers part because they were targeting the hard core Hulk Comics fans and not fans of the tv show. Which is why when making a film like this you have to reach many demographics. Fans of Transformers arent gonna make this movie any real money so lets lay that myth to rest. For Transformers to become a phenomenon it needs to grab as many people as possible. Spider-man didnt ride into the Box Office top ten because only the fan boys were seeing this movie...everyone was seeing Spider-man. You do a G1 Transformers and you leave out the kids who only know Beast Machines or any of the new incarnations. Kids arent stupid. My 6 year old nephew is a very big Godzilla fan. Loves everything Godzilla. Watches the movies and plays with the toys.....but he hates the Tristar movie because to him that wasnt Godzilla.
In the end a compromise had to be reached amongst all the various Transformer incarnations to produce this hybrid movie we are getting. Compromise isnt a happy thing...you have to give to get. Ask your self this....would I rather see a Transformers movie with a Optimus Prime as a long nose truck or no Transformers movie at all.

The Hulk (which bore abosolutely no resemblance to The Hulk most of us grew up with- The Bill Bixby series- not even a nod) and Godzilla are perfect examples.
But the TV series Hulk differed greatly from the comic book source material. It was a different take on a classic character. Where GINO failed for you, TV Hulk seemed to prosper. It's possible to deviate from popular established iconic source material and still come out with a creative, entertaining and noteworthy end product.
That's why I think it's way too soon to write this Transformers movie off. Believe me, if the movie is a pile of **** I'm going to come here and back you up on every one of your complaints about it. I'm keeping an open mind definitely. But there are some concepts of this film that really have me concerned.
That Evens Stevens kid, Tyrese, and Bernie Mac is not my idea of how a Transformers movie should be. I understand Transformers did have humans with Spike and Daniel; but right now at this very moment, they seem to be focusing too much on the humans instead of the machines themselves.
All I can say is that I'll keep an open mind. This film could be great or it could be a big pile of steaming crap.

How can you know how much focus they're putting on the robots? I'll guarantee you that right now, at this very moment, they have a sizable cgi staff working extremely hard on the robots. How do we determine which is getting more focus when by the very nature of this film you're not going to have big robots on set, where humans easily can be?

Hell, I'm not that expecting much. It's freakin' movie about giant robots who can transform. I'm not trying to downplay the 'mythology' of Transformers, but they were toys first then a tv show/comics. I stated that just in case if Batman or whatever.
Anyway, I'm just a tad worried that Bay might change the robots just because he wants to change them. I still think Optimus Prime till this day has one of the best designs out there. Tweak him... yes. Change him to the point where you don't reconize him..no.

Because from what I remember Spielberg and Bay both confirming that this movie will focus more on humanity than the Transformers.
Of course this could've changed with time and different idea concepts, however, my dream Transformers live action movie would be The Transformers: The Movie storyline incorporated into a movie setting.
I'm keeping an open mind, though. We'll see what happens.

That's not the type of thing that changes. Theme and subplots can't entirely switch focus from one character to another without it becoming a notably different movie.
The Autobots are meant to be war machines. Highly intelligent war machines with character, drive and plenty of personality, but not prone to a whole lot of drama or personal character development... a movie needs that, that's why Sam is the star and not Optimus. Optimus has his story, and their stories are interwoven inexorably I'm sure, but like Han and Luke, when it comes down to it, the scrawny and ultimately less cool guy is the one in the middle of the picture...

Uhm...You don't really know a whole lot about Transformers do you?
Nope. I can go and read the Ultimate Transformers guide to find their true origins and purpose if you like, but people are going to the movie to see them fight and blow stuff up, if you have transformers sitting around being deep it will go the way of the Hulk Movie (and in some ways SR), it'll be great, but many will dislike it simply because it isn't action-centric like they expected...

Don't necessarily have to treat it like a "s***ty japanese spinoff". Since G1 has multiple different versions of itself, 8-9 different versions. TF's been redone so many different ways...don't have to look at it as lesser-than.

I didn't know that taking a dump on a piece of paper could be considered a "fine work of art".

Neither could taking a dump on what Transformers should be about.

What should it be about? And what exactly is this film about?
Best part of that read:
"Optimus Mother****ing Prime"

You clearly haven't heard of the 'Turner Prize', a high profile British award for people who can't draw worth a damn.
And by 'high profile' I mean 'totally s**t'. ;)

The Hulk (which bore abosolutely no resemblance to The Hulk most of us grew up with- The Bill Bixby series- not even a nod) and Godzilla are perfect examples.
For starters, yes there was a nod to the series in the movie, pay attention. Two is you count a cameo.
A lot of people nit pick over minor changes. I was a bit surprised by Optimus' paint job, but I won't let it ruin the movie for me. Now had they made him a pink girly bicycle with tassles...then I'd be a little perturbed.
nosebleed.

Three actually...
1)Bruce's father in the comics was named Brian....they named his father David after the main character in the tv series.
2)Lou Feringo(sp) cameo
3)Dont get me angry line at the end
Time to drive Raleigh and give Cliffy a high five.

Because swearing = 12 years old, right?
Have you heard any halfway decent stand-up act in the past, say, 15 years? Obviously not, or else this wouldn't phase you at all.
He's very passionate about it. So what?

because there is a right way and a wrong way to get the point across.
A well thought out letter without the cursing and rape probably would have been read by Bay and taken into consideration. Do we really think anyone attached to the film read past the first few sentances??????????
